I don't know if I'm paranoid but I believe this is a real problem. Do you notice that if you put the phone on a desk, the screen becomes very unresponsive.
Only when you hold it in your hand that the screen is great again. I think it's the digital compass that senses your hand (It's possible because there's the MetalDetector app on the market.)
What do you think? It's really annoying for me because I can't just throw it on bed and play with it, always have to hold it in my sweaty hand.

Don't take offense to this but hand eye coordination may not be that great when its on a surface and not directly looking at you or not enough pressure maybe?
On a side note, why is your hand always sweaty..

Do you have the white G1 with the glossy faceplate/backplate?
I know some people with the HTC Magic is having the same problem on some surfaces, such as fleece. Seems the shell of the HTC Magic is slightly conductive and on some surfaces that becomes a problem for the capacitive touchscreen (which as we all know uses the static electricity in your fingertips).
The reason I'm asking if you have the white G1 is because the shell of the white G1 resembles the glossy shell of the HTC Magic.
You're right, I have a white G1 with the weird back cover (something soft, cannot be scratch.) So is that the problem? I try to hold the phone in my hand and scroll a list, I don't have to push my finger too hard on the screen, just make a slight contact between my finger and the screen and that's enough. But with the phone on a desk, I have to push my finger to create a larger area of contact between my finger and the screen

Yeah, that sounds exactly lite the issue a bunch of HTC Magic users are reporting. I don't think there is a solution to the problem though, other than to use a thin silicone case for it, something that ought to disable the conductive properties of the regular shell/casing.
There are some really slim silicone cases on the market, that won't make the phone much bulkier than it already is, you might want to try that.

So there are different kinds of white G1, ones without the weird back cover like mine? Wow, guess I just had bad luck getting this one lol
it happens to my black g1 too but its only noticable when i pulling the notification or apps trays
Woah, same thing happens on my black G1. If I put the phone on the sofa or carpet and use the tip of my finger it is completely unresponsive, but works fine in my palm or the palm rest of my laptop. Must be to do with conductivity
Yeah, pretty annoying huh? I really hate it, especially when I'm lying on my bed or couch.
So this is a hardware, not software problem? I was hoping adev can fix this
Weird, I don't have any issues with this at all with my ADP1. Does the black G1 have a "rubbery" matte backplate like the ADP1?

ya its a rubbery matte lol
it works when i use the flesh of the finger but not the tip
Hey guys, the problem is solved if you:
1/ Plug your phone to the wall charger/USB cord (you don't even need to plug it to the computer or wall plug, just the cord)
2/ Plug in the headphones (not even the whole headphones, just the miniUSB-3.5mm adapter is enough)
This makes me wonder maybe this is not a hardware problem. What do you think? I think Google is trying to prevent contacts by accident, so the screen is "on" only when you hold it in your hand.

they both are wires that conduct electricity lol
So do you think buy another backplate will solve the problem? There are G1s out there that don't have the rubbery matte or whatever backplate like mine?

Thanks for tip Would be great if someone could make a dummy plug for the mini usb connector which would have the same effect.
my phone does this too. It is a conductivity problem. To prove it, make sure when you lay your phone flat, make sure at least two fingers or another part of your hand is firmly touching the phone. Responsiveness should come back.
This bothers me too...when I'm on the crapper I like to rest my g1 on the clothes hamper and browse. But it seldom registers a touch unless I have at least two parts of my hand touching the phone.
and spare me the comments please

I have a black ADP1. Mine does this too. Its quite annoying.
Same issue here, but it has nothing to do with the surface for me, but rather the flatness level. As long as the phone is lying down flat, be it a wooden table, bed sheet, or bathroom sink counter, if it's flat, it's less responsive (it's not completely unusable, just less).
A little tilt solves it for me, so i'd find something else to sit the top of the phone over.

For the people who didn't know this already.
You can remove the provider logo from the phone with a cube of sugar. Because the cube of suger is softer then the metal you wont scrats the metal surface but it will remove the paint of the logo.

Make sure you only move the cube the way the metal is brushed. So up and down, not from left to right.
After it you can clean it with a soft cloth with a little alcohol on it.
And away is the Ulgy T-mobile logo!
Only thing to do now is remove the w-n-w logo from the button.
Wow, good find!
but the w-n-w is on plastic so how will you remove that?
Don't know yet, but I will look into that soon.
the WnW is cut out of the button so even if you take the pink off you are left with the shape so might as well leave it (unless you buy a replacement panel from HTC).
Russ
Sweet!!!!!!
My Tilt appears to have some kind of coating on the metal that makes it darker. Anyone done this to their Tilt? My Dopod C730 has the same type coating and it looks like it's a coating and not an anodizing so I'm leary of trying it.
Well I think the Tilts do have a coating cause I just tried this on mine and nothing happened. No scratches and no paint taken off, it's all still there.
How hard should we push down on the cube and how long should this take?
apparently pocket friction will wear away at the painted-on HTC logo on the tytn ii. and the rubberized back and the logo stamped there holds up well exposed to motor oil and brake fluid.
Strange, huh?
Well, when you push the cube on the paint the cube starts to crumble. I noticed thats not really good. Try to search a harder erge of the cube and push so hard that the edge of the cube donesn't break. Now move the edge over the paint a few times and it will come off.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. I work at my fathers shop and I was impressed with how well my Dash withstood the oil and daily grind around here. Now that I got my hands on my Kaiser I noticed the little HTC on the front is rubbing a little thin but all the oil and grease doesn't affect the rubber HTC, lol

Okay, here is some evidence of my failure. I used the same sugar cube, which isn't even a cube anymore. On the same phone lol. For 2 days for about 5 minutes each day. I didn't even make a dent, oh and that thing between the "a" and the "t" is not a scratch just a piece of lint that I didn't get when I whipped around the logo.

Those AT&T bastards. I tried a small arsenal of solvents I have including paint thinner, acetone and MEK (methyl ethyl ketone - nasty stuff!) and my darn logo looks exactly the same as yours - FULLY INTACT. Thats cool I totally agree with you, I personally have no problems with the t-mobile branding on the outside of the case as its very minimal, its inside the OS that bugs me as they fill it full of useless **** most people don't use. But that's why we hack them about and take it out

slide mechanism
Go to www.cnn.cn. They have a good selection of spare parts. the entire slide mechanism is $39.95 USD. Whole new case is $79.99 USD. They are based in Hong Kong and ship all over the world. Parts show to be in stock on their website.

that pic gives you a bit of an idea - looks worse in real life, the metal front plate is buckled at the bottom of the screen and the buttons are all scraped - the side plastic housing has the silver paint ripped off it and the sliding mechanism is really loose now - i can push one side of it and itll move about 2-3mm up without the other side moving at all - i recall this being rather tight before i dropped it
im so kicking myself :'(
Yeah!! The TyTnII (and it is one you can tell by the front cam position) side thumbnail shows a COMM Manager button
It would mean the power button was in the wrong place?
It looks like pre-production parts? Kaiser's rear was glossy up to production release. Power button looks OK, but that's a different 2nd button for sure.
Not that this helps, but I had my big camera case on my shoulder and it somehow spun and unclipped my Kaiser in it's PDair flip case, off my hip and onto asphalt! I hear the mind-bending clatter of a $850 plastic toy bouncing.... magnet catch released..... front flap opened.... came to rest, face down..... Not a freaking mark!!!
I went to church.

tbh im quite amased the damage tomine literally is only the casing - i did properly step on it with all my weight and it did slide along the tarmac *CRINGE* under my full weight (bit like a skateboard - it was really rough oldy knobly tarmac too)- lord knows how i missed cracking or scratching the screen - i reckon there was some divine intervention going on somewhere - god works in mysterious ways etc - maybe this phone is blessed

Is a bit of play in the keyboard slider normal?
I recently dropped my MDA Vario III from a height of the seat of a chair onto a wooden floor. Everything works fine and there are no scratches or anything but I'm not sure if the keyboard is now a bit looser than it was. If I press on the top or bottom right hand corners of the screen it slides in a little. Is this normal or is it fairly tight unless you push both top and bottom at once? There's about a 1mm gap on the left hand side between screen and base and if I press the X button on the screen to close an app, the screen moves down under the pressure a bit. Can anyone with a pristine Tytn II tell me if that's normal or not? I have an accidental damage policy on the phone.
Cheers,
Ashley Emery

Nothing to worry about, this is normal. If you try to slide it by pushing at the very top or bottom (one corner only) it slides in a little. You can slide it out that way, but it feels less smooth than normal. To slide it properly you'll need to push a bit closer to the centre, like you'd normally do with your thumb. This way you get a nice smooth sliding action.

I think 1mm is a bit too much. Your screen may have been dislocated because of the drop... If you look closely at the surface of the touch screen you'll notice that every time you push on it with the stylus the screen surface "bends" slightly. This is normal. But if the entire screen assembly/frame moves and goes in as you push it, then it may have been damaged and become loose. Perhaps you can try another Kaiser in a local shop and compare.
I'm gutted. Somehow my Diamond has got this oily liquid underneath the screen in the centre of the screen. It's come from nowhere?? I haven't got it wet, have always used a screen protector, etc but now it's as if it has escaped from somewhere inside the phone and is now sitting between the digitizer and the glass underneath. Where on earth does this come from? Has anyone known this to happen to other HTC's? I guess it has come from the LCD. God only knows how this happened, I treat my Diamond with a lot of care. I tried to take some photos for you guys to show you what I mean but it was pointless, you can only see this oil slick when the light reflects off the screen so it's hard to actually capture that in a photo. Just imagine an oil slick underneath the screen that moves around when you touch it with your finger. Oh yeah, and now my digitizer is inaccurate all the time. Actually I made a little picture to at least try and illustrate (sorry I suck at paintbrush)
I'm a bit worried that I'm going to end up with one of those ****ty yellow-tint replacement LCD's. My friend bought a touch pro the other day and he ended up with one of these screens, and believe me, they are A JOKE. The look *pitiful*. If this happens it's byebye Diamond and byebye HTC. Just on 6 months old this thing and been treated with nothing but absolute care. I might even do the unthinkable and get an iphone now I hear that TomTom is on it's way over there.. Wow I guess I must be really pissed off, lol..

Have same problem
I used hair dryer but it is there still.
all i can say is that not always and only looking from a certain angle i have the same square stain you describe. i thought i am the only one....
the strange thing is that looking now at the screen everything looks OK (the stain is not there) but i remember seeing the stain in many occasions in the past. maybe is temperature related and right now is morning here and i didn't start using my device yet.
i'll keep an eye on this thread.
i also take good care of my device and use a screen protector.
Finaly some out there with the same problem as me
I have the idea that it could be the result of presure to the screen!
...you get the same "oilish" look when you press a finger on the screen!

Yes, exactly, staring at the screen normally, I cannot see it. But, when the light hits it, I can see it very much.
And, now when tapping the screen instead of feeling that cushioned kind of effect, it's now really hard and the taps with the stylus are much louder than what they were before. It's like the previously trapped 'oil' actually gave a softening effect, but now it has escaped or whatever, and it feels like I am tapping glass, or something equally as hard. But we all know the glass is a couple layers deep, and there is the soft digitizer and also the screen protector between that glass and the stylus. Now it feels like those extra layers are not even there. I can barely use the horizontal scrollbars now as the stylus is inaccurate in a lot of areas on the screen, but not all, and not all the time. (?) Even after a re-calibration the problem is not going away. Dialling a number takes several attempts due to missed numbers, and other niggly annoying things you can imagine. Hmmm. I wonder how many people have this but have not noticed yet?
Please post here is you have this problem, guys! Remember to look at your screen with an overhead light directly bouncing off your screen and into your eyes. Then you will see the oil slick effect. And when in the position you can touch the screen with your finger and see the oily liquid move around. Please let us know if you have this problem, thanks.
probably from heat/humidity. happens with my atom exec
Hi guys,
i don't have Diamond but sometimes check Diamond forum.
I thin that the problem you are referring to, also occured on some of the HTC Touches(Elfs).
Check this thread(post #106 has some ample pics):

P.S. I don't know if they managed to solve the screen smudge issue.

I think its related to what the screen reflects, because sometimes i see it to and sometimes i don't, now i have a LCD Computer Screen from samsung and if i use the phone at home i don't see the 'oil', if i place my phone in the right direction so that it reflects the screen i will see the screen reflected part with the 'oil' ,so if i hold it so that my LCD screen appears for 50% on my screen(y-ax) and the other 50 percent of the diamond reflects a wall or something, i only see the 'oil' at that part that reflects my LCD screen...
Now this isn't only with my LCD screen, the roof @ my school does the same thing, some kind of walls, etc.
whoa, that's really weird, I just noticed that on my Diamond while sat at my desk...! I'm sure I would have seen it before now, but who knows... It's only visible under certain light though (flourescent seems to be the worst). Its presence doesn't appear to affect the digitizer and can't actually see it when the backlight's on...
I had exactly the same problem. Called HTC logged as a fault .. New screen replaced under warranty . Very impressed !
Its the touch screen touching the LCD ... A known probelm to HTC so give them a call
Thanks for all your replies everyone
My touch screen is really hard to use now so shouldn't be a problem getting it replaced, I hope!
I will call our HTC repairer Monday then let you know how it goes, thanks!
oil in the center of screen
ahhh I just noticed the same oily substance on my diamond too!! so whats the deal ?!
Wow I have the same problem too...don't see it directly but when I tilt it at certain angle I can see it. I will give HTC a call and hopefully they will help me replace the screen.
Mines the same
Just sent off for repair with t mobile
Nice to know I can direct them here if they decide to say it's not a common problem so I must have done it
Got it here too!
screen went really bad touching one area say opens different links in opera or anyother app.

the same problem but who to call
hi guys
just wanted to ask
i am from israel and bought the diamond on ebay from a store in the states
who can i call?
htc will probably want me to ship it to them
and then i will be without a phone for a month
what should i do?
Me too!! Ditto!
I got the same problem too!!!! And OMG....soo many ppl have it too!! This is crazy.....its like some mass defective shipment or something! I have the same oily patch on my elfin. And my digitizer is new....its barely been 2 months!! I had it replaced coz I accidentally cracked the last one. Though it doesn't seem to be affecting the screen calibration or any of the screen accuracy. I hope its not like a problem that aggravates into something else altogether (fingers crossed).
Have the same problem with my diamond. Will send it to HTC repair center in austria a few days past christmas.

Same problem on my Touch HD (Blackstone)
Got my Touch HD less than 4 weeks ago and noticed a small oliy patch (size a 5p coin) in the bottom after a few days. Sometimes the patch was visible and sometimes not. It has now progressed to a rectangle of about 1 inch by 3 inch. I noticed it can hardly be seen with normal light bulbs or outside, but under certain light conditions like our special lighting in the office (some natural, blue light bulbs) AND energy saving light bulbs it is very obvious and annoying.
I have no idea how it happened as I had 3 other HTC touch screen devices in the past without this problem. I am carrying my phone in my trouser back pocket, but I think it does not bend it enough to cause this. Another suspicion (guess of mine) is the screen protector itself. I am wondering that maybe the temp difference between protector and screen was too large and when it contracted it pulled away the upper layer of the touch screen?
I am attaching a bmp that shows the patch on the phone.
I have now contacted BuyMobilePhones.net where I bought the phone and after being wrongly asked to contact Orange for a fault code, I have sent it to them for repair/replacement. I hope I will get it back next week. Until then I will use my Artemis / O2 XDA Orbit 2.
I received my phone this Monday. It has worked perfectly since , and I am very happy with the device overall.
However, a couple of hours ago I noticed that the protective layer (outer layer), the one that protects the whole front surface (no, not the screen protector), has loosened from the layer below which is probably the touch layer.
The gap is very noticeable when using the stylus as I reach two pressure points before the phone reacts to the touch.
The air between the layers also creates a rainbow effect when the light passes through screen -> air -> protective plastic -> grease\fingerprint.
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar. As I said it is very easy to notice if you press slowly down on the screen with the stylus. I can make the outer layer wobble without touching the resistive layer below.
Thanks
Nope ... no signs of any gap here.
I'd suggest returning it to your hardware store and demand a new one.
I'm sure i can feel 2 layers too, but no problems as such.
I have been in contact with HTC and they claim that this is an unknown problem, however serious.
I am returning the device as it is DOA.
The gap is easy to notice if you press lightly with the stylus on the middle of the screen.
When I first started using the device the outer layer felt like glass because there was no supression. Now it feels like a sheet of plastic on top of a lowered piece of glass with a tiny gap of air in between.

I bet you've never used a capacitive touch screen before What you are describling is simply called "digitizer" and it's meant to be exactly like this. If you want to press a glass-like hard surface, the only chance is going for a resistive dislay (iPhone, Samsung Omnia HD, HTC Dream...)

You got it twisted here. Replace capacitve by resistive in your post.
hehe... I see what you mean, but I know how the screen is designed. However, when my screen goes from feeling like glass (which just means that the layers are without any airpockets between them) to feeling like a baloon, I am very certain that it can be classified as a faulty unit.

I realise that this may happen as the device gets old, but 3 days is pretty fast. They should have shipped with the airpocket to begin with if this is to expect from a few days use.

hmmm... I had MANY pdas (tytn II, diamond, touch hd, xperia X1, diamond 2) and ALL of them could make you feel the upper layer slighlty "going down" and touching the under layer, when pressed with stylus. Diamond 2 is no exception. Speaking about your drawings, there is no resistive screen made as shown in the top picture. A resistive screen has to ba made as shown in the bottom one, with a microscopic space between the hard screen and the flexible digitizer. My Diamond 2 behaviour is the same as yours and so is the behaviour of every PDAs I had in the past.
ps sorry for my bad English
Well, my microscopic space must have gotten bigger. I noticed a difference from wednesday to thursday, and even the sales dept at the website where i bought it couldn't feel any compression of the outer layer when using the stylus. This might be a common issue with the D2 which you didn't notice because you're obviously used to it.
It would be great if someone else could check to see if their device acts the same.
The gap is very noticable. Probably 0.3-0.5 mm.

1:So, Iphone, Omnia HD and HTC Dream have a better display than the diamond2?
2:Can they be more durable than the TD2?
3:What conclusions can i take for this?
4o you know if all the new htc devices except the htc dream have the same display?
I'm making a few questions because since my diamond is gone I'm planning to buy the TD2 on the middle of the year.As I live outside the US and in my country this news devices take so long time to come in the market, if I brick a device like this I'm gonna have a huge problem!HTC Internacional warranty. WOW I don even want to think about that!

1: not better, just different (see the difference between capacitive and resistive screens)
2: yes if we speak about iPhone (it has GLASS screen, while every other PDAs has plastic screen)
3: ...
4: EVERY PDA with Windows Mobile has resistive screen

Thanks!
I found a good article about resistive and capacitive screens, if someone want to see, just take a look here
It is hard to believe, the display is real **** of the D2.
I was super careful, did not drop the phone or anything. Already after the 2nd day of owning it, the display is broken.
I had it in the leather pouch in my pocket and when I pull it out to use it, I see some liquid under the display. Now the display does not react anymore.
No idea what to do...
has this happened to you before?
Hi
Sorry to hear the screen is broken, if you mean you had it in your trouser pocket this is very likely the reason. They should never ever be put in a trouser pocket, a mobile phone might be built to withstand it, but not a mobile PDA such as these. The problem is they are all screen, and any pressure bending the chassis, or keys or coins pressing against the screen are going to cause problems.
Depending on where you bought it you might be able to send it back to the place of purchase, or try a warranty repair with HTC, however other people have reported that problems such as this with the screen are excluded from warranty.
Regards
Phil
This screen issue does worry me; it does seem to have afflicted quite a few users. I regard myself a a very careful user, my "gadgets" are rarely scratched or marked.
But, I keep the D2 in a soft pouch in my jacket pocket. Evertime I get it out there's an irrational urge to worry if the screen's still OK. This will probably subside with time, I admit.
What worries me is if the pouch gets "poked" on the screen side whilst in my jacket. I would expect a portable device to be at least a bit resistant to this treatment. The D2 does appear to have a "delicate" screen, which would benefit from being stored in a pouch with a hard protective panel on the screen side. If only for peace of mind.
Thanks for the kind words. I just left the phone alone for about 3 hours and the liquid behind the display has disappeared. It seems like it fixed itself, which I do not understand.
I will monitor it and treat it carefully, however it looks like this could be a common problem, as I really did not drop it nor knock it.
If anyone else has had a similar experience, I would be interested to know about. I actually may call XDA and ask them how this happens...it's looking good so far...

My TD2 is always in my trousers pocket, just like my previous pda, the HTC Touch, without any screenprotectors or such. Both screens are not damaged at all and works still just fine

You are lucky. Maybe you never carry anything else, like keys or money, in your trouser pocket. Perhaps you're rich and don't care

@cencored: Perhaps it was just moisture which has dried out? I've read before this can happen if the screen gets damp (although the symptom for actual physical screen damage sounds very similar).
I remember my Diamond2 coming with an extra message in the package stating you should never keep it in the pockets of your trousers.
i have had my D2 for 1month and a half. i havn't had any problems with it except some dust getting under the screen which i fixed it.
I misplaced the slip case that came with my TD2, ordered a new one of the interweb but in the 2 days it too k to arrive my screen got scratched. Given the real beauty of this device is the screen and it;'s resoloution I am gutted to the point that even though it is still 100% functional and the scratches are really very small I may look at the cost of a new screen.
Why don't they make phone screens out of the same glass they make watch glass with? I don't feel the need to put a watch protector on the glass of my watch, and it seems to need a lot of abuse before it gets scratched or chipped.

If I'm correct the statement said to take the phone out of your pocket when sitting down.

This is a little difficult for "touch"-screen, because it will not respond
I always have my phone in the trouserpocket, but because I know I'm not very carefull with al lot of things, I have a leather case with hard top.
I friend of mine had complaints about damp in his diplay.
They said never to keep your phone in your trouserpocket and never use it in the bathroom
well the touchscreen means that the protection foil must me sensitive to touch. I carry my TD 2 in my backpack. ALWAYS. I know that there are problems with the screen. Yes, there was a message that came with the TD 2 pack: something like don't sit when your phone is in your pocket. Still, better safe than sorry
