New To Push Email - Please Help

Hello all,
I need to have instant notification of my emails and thought the only way was Blackberry until I heard of Push Email.
I have a K-Jam with the latest imate os. I've read that this version has push email with it but cant see it in the programs or anything.
What do I need to install etc to recieve emails from my ISP. What backend setup do I need? I have a pop 3 account that is web based too and i am on the O2 network in the UK

Hi,
Push Email (or "DirectPush" as Microsoft seem to call it) only works in conjuction with an Exchange server I'm afraid. It doesn't work with POP3 boxes.
There are probably some companies offering POP3-->Exchange services for people like yourself wanting push email who don't have Exchange (or there will likely be some) but I don't personally know of any at the moment.
DirectPush works by connecting to an HTTP server (Exchange) and keeping the connection open/idle until something changes then a ActiveSync is performed. The POP3 protocol simply doesn't have anything to allow you to keep it open without sending something constant to keep it alive which would seriously add up on the traffic.

I'm actually gonna have an Exchange Server 2003 soon. I read that I need SP2 installed aswell
Where do I go from there then? ie configuring my k-jam.

Configuring the mobile devices themselves isn't particularly hard. When you set up the sync instead of syncing with Outlook you specify with an Exchange server and just follow the prompts. It seems to connect/realise DirectPush (SP2) is available and that's it. You configure the schedule... and away it goes.
I found setting up the server was the hardest part. Well not hard, just more time consuming. You'll want/need to create you own SSL certificate (which will need installing on the device) unless you're purchasing a commercial one and configure the IIS timeout value (I'm still experimenting with this one) and then finally actually turn on DirectPush from System Manager. I think that was pretty much it though. Configuring Exchange etc in the first place takes more time than setting up push.

I am trying out a commercial hosted exchange service (www.utica.nl) now.
This works very wel, but it has a price too: 5.95 euro per month for the lite package/
Push Email works very good.
As an alternative I am thinking about setting up my own exchange server and having my company-email and calendar forwarded to that one.
What do you advise to run exchange 2003 SP2:
- Windows version / SP?
- Hardware
(I am on a 20Mb down / 2Mb up broadband connection wich allows me to run servers, so there is no issue)

Well you'll need Windows 2000 or 2003 standard server or higher (won't run on a non-server platform), but see this link for full requirements:

I am curious though, how will you forward Calendar events (and contacts?) from one system to another please? I'm not sure I'll ever want to do that, but certainly sounds like something worth knowing!

What would the GPRS cost be to have this open/idle connection active all day and night. Would it send check data every few minutes?
I only ask as my contract talk plan gives me 100KB of data a month for free but after that I pay in chunks.

Here's a paper you cna read...

Mines seems to use between 6kb and 9kb an hour when idle. I wouldn't take that as a rule, just my personal experience. Obviously it goes up a lot more when the actual emails come in!

Well it could just be down to me having flakey service or something and it reconnecting a lot (I haven't noticed that though), but the 6 to 9 kbytes was from running GPRS Monitor and running a report and looking at the overnight hours where I know I didn't get any emails for hours on end.

Router settings
The other thing that is going to make a difference would be the setting on the server. The longer the session can be kept open between the router and the phone the least amount of data that will need to be transfered. For example 15 minutes seems a common amount of time to keep the line openm, at the end of those 15 minutes your phone will initiated a new connection i.e. traffic. Obviously the more often it does this the more traffic generated and the more power needed.

Can i push task or agenda items which are located on the public folders?

The reason you want push is to receive an e-mail sent to you IMMEDIATELY The problem I see with push mail is you can't really use forwarding between services because it adds delays that defeat the point of it. It is not essential to have Exchange but most current systems employ it
So you need to implement push using your current e-mail address and provider for best performance
For example if you use a specific e-mail address for all your mail that is what you need to access if you don't want to change your e-mail address
If your e-mail provider uses IMAP there is a solution. It started off fairly shakey but has got quite reliable - it's vgsmail (www.vgsmail.com\ppc)
It uses IMAP idle to connect to your current e-mail (assuming IMAP support) and WORKS
As said using this is the best way of avoiding changing e-mail address and low cost (just data costs) - uses 3or4MB a month just to work - but if you're using your pda for mail you need to be on a good tarriff --- say T-Mobile web'n'walk - soon to become ulimited.
It takes about 10-30 seconds from an e-mail being sent to my PDA notifying me --- all for a one off cost of $21

My hosted exchange trial gave e my answer: not gonna work the way I want it. The trouble is with the forwarding of calendar events (that what i want it for).
So setting up my own server will not bring any relief either.
Waiting for my company to support push or me getting a business Blackberry subscription.
Good to try anyway.

does anybody has any experience with this vgsmail stuff?
my e-mail provider supports imap and I could live with a delay of 30sec....

(1) We can set an MS Exchange Server 2003 then do some setting in both Exchange server side and the XDA unit, I wonder if the XDA unit can get the email thru GPRS once after the email is sent, how long will it be delayed, how much it costs, it seems it is a way that the XDA unit checks the Exchange server periodically while not a true push, right?
(2) To get a blackberry subscription. Is it a true push? Can a XDAII unit get a blackberry subscription from O2 network?

HTC Tytn II + Blackberry Connect + AT&T = It works!

I had BBC 4.0.0.67 working on my 8525, and a couple of days ago bought the HTC Tytn II (Kaiser). On initial startup, using the SIM from my 8525, the Tytn II set up my AT&T data connection. Phone calls and 3G internet surfing worked fine. The Tytn set my data connection to use isp.cingular and I added the wap.cingular connection. I use the wap.cingular connection.
I first tried Blackberry connect 4.0.0.90 which would not connect to the BB server even though I had a good 3G internet connection. I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T who finally said it was a Blackberry problem and they transferred me to Blackberry. I spent an hour on the phone with them, and they concluded it was AT&T. Blackberry support transferred me back to AT&T. The AT&T manager basically said: we don't support a non AT&T phone on Blackberry...and we don't support blackberry connect. I will point out everyone was very nice throughout this over 2 hour ordeal.
So I removed BBC .90, cleaned out all traces, and reloaded the 4(1).0.0.84 AT&T Tilt version from the HTC America site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327695
and surprise, everything works perfectly on 3G and Edge. Blackberry BES for my work exchange email (synching email, calendar, contacts, and notes) and BIS for my personal email accounts. The Blackberry web browser also works fine.

At my firm I have the option to install BBC or Good. I have Good running but I'm wondering about BBC. Does it work like Good in that there is a separate application running that you need to open for mail/calendar/contacts, and it's not integrated into the native apps? Or is it like using a blackberry where everything is integrated. Thanks!

It's fully integrated into the native apps. BBC creates WM6 mail accounts for my exchange email and personal email accounts, the contacts are in the WM6 standard contacts database, and the appointments are in the standard calendar. All of these (except personal email) are bi-directionally syncronized with my exchange server.

Just one more question - for the corporate email, can you add an attachment to an email that is stored on the mobile unit?

I read this in an article which is what prompted me to ask. What the article is describing sounds like Good, where it's a separate application.... "The new BlackBerry application suite will complement existing Windows Mobile 6 functionality and will appear as an icon on the screen, in the same manner as other third-party applications. Clicking the icon will prompt a suite of BlackBerry applications, including push e-mail functionality, calendar, address book and others, to load. "

Can one run both the Outlook and the Blackberry connect in the same device (Kaiser) at the same time?
Also, I attempted to install BB connect and I was prompted to first disable my password. I could not find a way to do that without first eliminating the Outlook connection to the Exchange server. Is there another way?

My guess is the author was not familiar with the WM6 environment. There is a BB icon in settings and on the bottom of the today screen, but it brings up the bbc configuraton utility. The apps are fully integrated in the native wm6 apps.

If you use BBC to synch contacts, appointments, notes, and tasks, you cannot also synch them via activesynch/WMDC or exchange sync. It's one method or the other. I have not set up a POP account on my Tytn because I have all my personal POP email go through the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS).
I'm not sure if you can exchange sync email and use BBC for email too.

Yes, but it seems like you are limited to 32K or smaller.

So, here's the deal. I also got this to work on my second day of having my TyTN II. I called AT&T and tricked them into thinking I had purchased an unlocked BB from a dealer and they switched me over to the BB Unlimited plan so I could use BES to connect to my corp email. I installed the PC software, and the handheld SW. And got everything working. It started downloading all my emails, inbox and sent. I chose not to sync my calendar until I confirmed it worked.
BUT...
Something very strange happened. Basically, it went thru my calendar, saw all my meetings that were on my calendar for the last week and in the future and started to RESEND ALL THE MEETING INVITES AS IF THEY WERE FROM ME.
So, if I had a meeting that I was invited to next week, along with 3 others. It sent out a meeting invitation through my email to the other 3 participants (excluding the original meeting organizer) and sent it as if I was the meeting organizer. So I ended up with duplicate meetings on my calendar, and it duplicated everyone else's calendar. So people had 2 meeting ivntes, one from me, and one from the original organizer.
Needless to say, this was a big problem. Fortunately, i cuaght it before it went thru my entire calendar, but ti still managed to send out about 40 meetings invites, some to large groups of people!
I immediately removed the BBC software and switched my plan back.
I don't know why it happened. I can't explain it. Has anyone else who gets the new Kaiser-compatible BBC installed had this issue? Or did it work as expected?
I would prefer to get BBC working, but I can't risk having that happen again!

That is very strange. BBC works great on mine and setup without issue.

GREAT news!!! since AT&T has not oficially released the "tilt" I'm assuming that you're using and HTC branded Kaiser, are you using the original ROM or did you Flash witht he AT&T ROM?

I am using the original rom that came on the device. It took less than 5 minutes to set up.

Ditto. OEM ROM.

Has anyone used this on Tmobile? I know BB connect works on the Dash, but not on the Wing and I would hate to drop that much money to find out that it doesn't work with Tmobile.

Thanks for responding, I hope this holds true with other carrier than AT&T, I expect to have my kaiser within the next week or so, I'm in Mexico and my carrier is Telcel, I will report back as soon as I try this.

That's great that it was so easy to set up and use.
One question though....I have been using BbConnect on my 8525 for a while now, and always have difficulty accessing things such as Cellular Video or XM Radio or MobiTV through the Bb unlimited data plan. Usually aI have to disconnect the BB Connect service to access those.
Do you know if these services/apps work with the unlocked Tytn II and Blackberry Connect?

I have gotten BBC to work and I am generally pleased with it except the 32k limit sucks.
I have a couple questions that I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out.
First, my work email shows up in a folder called "Desktop" which is different that the general "Outlook Email" folder. Why is there a difference?
Also, when sending meeting invitations, I don't have the option to use the work (i.e., "Desktop") account, only the Outlook Email account which is not connected. Any ideas how to remedy this?

Check Yahoo email on AT&T tilt.

So I want to check my yahoo email from my AT&T tilt, however according to AT&T there is NO way to do it unless I pay Yahoo $20/year for something. I had it all set up when I first got the Tilt a few days ago and it worked intermitt for a while, but quit last night. After calling tech support they wanted me use xpress mail, but that does not get all the folder info from yahoo.
So, per tech I deleted the accounts, hard reset (I soft reset at the bloatware load) and now I need to install a new email account to check yahoo. After doing so, I get an error that says to check my user name and password...but I know they are correct. I did not get this error before, just got intermit email retrieval.
Is there a chance that when talking to tech they notified yahoo or flipped a switch or something so that there is no way I can do this now.
OR is there a way to check my Yahoo email without using xpress mail...OR by using xpress mail and being able to see all the folders I have in yahoo?

outlook on your device should auto detect settings for yahoo, mine works fine and i'm not payin yahoo a cent for access

It does auto detect the pop stuff when I am setting up the email account, however I still get the "check password and user name" error.

Yahoo used to have a great add on app similar to windows live for hotmail but they put out a new one that blows and didn't allow you to sync your mail with outlook. Thats why I switched to hotmail. Plus i love being able to sync my contacts with my hotmail account.

there's another alternative,one of these threads shows how to direct all mail to a server and just set outlook to that to get everything you need from it

Well...to make me even more mad...I leave the house, go for a drive with the same "bad user name and password" and all of a sudden...BLING...I have mail! So I guess I have the right user name and password. WTF man? I just do not get it...and of course the knuckleheads at AT&T don't get it either. At least I have a non-bloatware phone now...stock ROM though.

stock rom shouldnt have to do with it but then again anything is possible these days.i never came across that issue with my old tornado,my 8125,hermes or my kaiser

At this point it still working, but I have little faith that it will continue as such.
Still reloading all my cabs after the reset...forgot I already put that much in this thing...might need to rethink it some. I will flash this sucker sometime soon...still have 20 days to return it if I am not happy.

Well...that did not last long...it is back at it. Again with the "check your login and password" error. So, could there be a connection issue... ie. do I have to be in 3G to get email? I am on the edge of 3G coverage here.
I just do not get it.

since you get service on and off like that, it may be a different issue. being on 3g or not doesnt affect it, only affect the speed of your transfers.
at this point i dont get it either, maybe it's somethign wrong on Yahoo's end. could be blocking access to their yahoo mail service, making you sign up for their paid service or using thier new app yahoo 2.0 soon to be 3.0

I can't believe someone still uses Yahoo mail when there's Gmail.. It just boggles my mind.

yea i use gmail and comcast mail and have everything forwarded thats important to my gmail.i tend to use yahoo mail only for spam

Well, I see you all don't like Yahoo...but that is what I use and I really like it...been using it for years. EVERYONE knows that email address and I I can't risk not having it for now.
But, this morning as I am talking AT&T about this thing...I explain that I have friends that get Yahoo mail...she says "it won't work, there is no way to do it"...then I tell her there is a forum where I posted this question and she says "look sir I do this for a living and I can assure you it will NOT work"...right then I get Yahoo mail on my phone. I tell her, "you might want to think about your line of work a little, or even switch careers and be a coffee jockey somewhere...cuz I JUST GOT YAHOO MAIL ON MY PHONE!!!".
Needless to say she was speechless for like 2 minutes. Then I concluded the call.
For most of today...while not in a 3G area...I got emails. I still don't get it.
I will look into the Gmail thing, however I just can't afford to not have my Yahoo account right now. Years ago I looked at Gmail and it was a joke...this was like 8 years ago or something...so I am sure it is greatly improved.

I get the same issue listed above, was there ever a fix for this. I've tried everything listed in the thread. I can't drop my Yahoo because I have way to many personal and business contacts linked to this e-mail. I just can't figure out why it is giving me password errors, any advice?

Was using yahoo and hotmail for the longest time too so I understand your reluctance to switch, AFAIK you can set most these web mail services to forward mail to another address and also have a "reply to:" feature this will make it easier for you to migrate to a new address if ever you do decide to do so. I migrated to Gmail a few years back because they had free POP forwarding. Now that I don't have a PC at home I use my device for all my email. Currently I have 5 email accounts on my tytn2.
3 Gmail = 1 for personal , 1 for forums i join, 1 for mobile , 1 Live Hotmail = the occasional straggler emails, and 1 Yahoo = the occasional straggler emails.
Oh and I don't use POP anymore all of the above are IMAP [Gmail also has free IMAP forwarding]

Yahoo does not provide POP3 email forwarding unless you pay $20 a year for "MAIL PLUS"

I got yahoo mail though the AT&T application XpressMail, it worked all the time and you can schedule it to check your email at an interval, its free i havent been charged whatsoever unless its because i use it through wifi. the great thing is it integrates with mobile outlook, i would advise installing that at least so your yahoo problems are solved

I used this one and it worked out well, Yahoo Go 2.0. I can't find the download link as i'm in a rush out the door. But this manages your yahoo mail rather well and has other nice features. When I get the my study spot I'll try to find the link and post it.

Exchange Mail Issue

I have two ActiveSync exchange accounts I need to set up...one sets up fine (no domain) but the other continues to error out. They are the same settings I used on my Droid Charge for the two weeks I had it, the same settings I used on my G2 for the year I had it, and even works in Touchdown on the D3, but not on the standard software on the phone...
Anybody else successfully setup an exchange account with domain?

I set mine up with domain, as I did a thousand times on Tbolt. Piece of cake. Immediately go into manual of course and go from there. I have not set up two accounts however.

Are you using a self signed SSL certificate? I'm waiting back for official word from Motorola, but I think the Droid 3 doesn't support it, which makes no sense since every other droid has (and Android in general).
I fear for what Blur is going to do to this phone.

lol, the blur on this phone is better than any android skin or aosp... by far.... and i'm coming from a DX and hate blur.

I've had a droid since day one, I can't wait to get asop or cyanogen running on this. I love the hardware and speed of the phone, but after running cyanogen the last 1+ years, its hard to live with the stock moto blur

I agree, cant wait to get CM on this. The bloatware sucks, and although the phone is fast I know it would be a lot faster on CM....
for now though, I'm actually not annoyed with blur (yet)

I'm not sure, I just know that SSL is needed for the account settings to work, and that my account works fine in Touchdown, but when I set it up in the stock "email" app, it errors out. And yes, I'm connecting manually and inputting the correct server address...

Im getting the same issue, trying to load up my regular email account.
I manually put all the right values in, as I have in the desktop email program, thunderbird, to no avail.
Anyone got a clue what is wrong?

I was able to sync my work exchange account no problem, went pretty easy.
What are you guys trying to connect to?
Exchange Server ? Do you know what version?

Just my regular ISP's email account.

UPDATE: Went to my ISP's site for instructions. Seems on the android, Mediacom wants secure authentication to retrieve emails.
Thunderbird doesn't require that to log in, for some reason.

Touchdown, which works with this account on the D3 btw, says this:
Connection Mode: ActiveSync ONLY
"Uses SSL" and "Fetch and trust certificate (not recommended)" are both checked.
When I go to Refresh ActiveSync Settings in Touchdown it says:
Versions:Microsoft-IIS/7.0,1.0,2.0,2.1,2.5,12.0,12.1
Policies:SET

Again, this email account has been properly setup on:
Droid Charge running 2.2
T-Mobile G2 running CM7 and CM6
T-Mobile MyTouch Slide running CM7
Yet, when I put in the settings into EMAIL on the Droid 3 it comes back with "Error: Count not connect to server."

Ive noticed one thing with exchange emails the last couple days and wanted to see if others were having it.
Has anyone had emails cut off, like its only loading some of the message. I get daily email updates on some xda threads, and it seems if they are very long it cuts it off and you can't read the whole message. Didn't have this problem on my old droid so must be something in motorolas new setup.

I've seen it, but I'm not seeing it right now when I check my email. Perhaps I changed a setting but I do remember having to select something to see the rest of the email.

Should i contact motorola?? Why should i have to pay $20 for touchdown because they put a defective email client on the phone?

Motorola's software isn't defective and works as intended. The corporate sync doesn't trust self signed certificates. But there are ways to work around this and later set the account to not verify it's certificates. First you need to either setup the account while on wifi on the same network or setup activesync to answer http requests. Meaning allow insecure connections. Once you do this you can setup the account insecurely, then goto settings -> accounts -> the email account in question and deselect the verify certificates option. Yes I agree that motorola is a pain for doing this, but the device is actually more secure disallowing self signed certificates.

I have to use K-9 Mail for my corporate, since Motorola doesn't support self-signed certificates.

I cannot setup the account while on the same wifi network, as there is no wifi allowed on that network. How do I "setup activesync to answer http requests?" Thanks for the above info and your help in the future with this.

If its any conciliation I cannot get my work mail to sync regardless of allowing or disallowing the self signed certificate. I will have to try it over WiFi to see if that helps, and I wasn't trying to use exchange either.
I do however consider the mail client defective as I did not have this issue on previous Moto Android 2.2 devices.

[Q] Gmail Exchange Setup

Hey all,
just upgraded from a Note2 to the Xperia Z.
I've been trying to setup my Exchange email for over an hour without success,
I've got it setup on the note2 working fine and notifying when mails are coming in. So settings seem right, but it won't budge on the Xperia Z, I know google talked about ending support for Exchange, but surely if it's working on my current phone, why not work on my new phone?

i've tried everything i can think of, while my other phone is quite happily notifying me of emails coming in, i really don't understand what i'm doing wrong here, surely Google aren't stopping my new phone, but allowing my old phone? If so thats a bit rubbish.

Same here. I have switched to android 2 weeks ago from iphone. On iphone i was getting e-mail notifications from google instantly when message was received on google server for few last years. Now it is not so good. I have checked now set up instructions for google sync and it says that it is for Google apps for business, education and government users. It was free for all before. It is free for all old users though but it seems that when you switch phones while using same gmail account, it does not transfer. Notifications on my ipad are still instant.

One reason especially on my old Samsung was that it displayed emails in a better format, as gmail used to have a stupid limit to the zoom meaning i had to scroll left to right on emails and it was bloody annoying. Also i find Exchange is near instant on arrival, while gmail is anywhere from instant to 5 minutes late.
If this is the scheme of new phones no longer working on exchange i'm pretty pissed off with google.
