Just about to try a new ROM and it occurred to me?
I've never done a ROM update before - read a lot about it but never actually done one.
I have done the hard spl and that was easy.
I understand the ROM upgrade kills all of your exisiting data and programs and this needs to be backed up and restored.
I use Exchange/Activesync Windows XP etc in a Corporate environment and I was wondering about this process.
I've upgraded phones before which is also easy, just reinstall the apps and sync and away we go.
Being as a ROM update isn't really a new phone, how does Activesync react to the fact that it is the same phone with no data? Will it "sync" the no data back to Exchange and delete everything?
Is there something built in to Actiovesync that recognises that this is the same phone and just "resets" everything back to where it left off?
Or do you just treat a new ROM like a new phone and create a new activesync partnership?
How does everyone else do this??

Exactly this scenario. After reflashing of a ROM it's like it's a new phone and Windows Mobile Device Center / Activesync must be setup again
/Smirge
I am using corporate server for mails, contacts, calendar as well.
After flashing ROM, setup ActiveSync and you have your data back.
Interestingly, if you flash one of the new ROMs with the Manilla 2.5 layout that icludes the new "grid style" contacts layout (as opposed to the rolodex style) once you have synced your contacts via exchange, your favourite contacts appear to be "remembered" i.e. you do not have to set them up again, they just appear in the grid as if by magic!!!
I have no idea whether this is a feature of the new manilla, windows mdc (I am running windows 7 btw) or ms exchange - whatever it is, it's useful!!
Thanks everyone.
I'll give it a go - wish me luck.

Oh, I would love this
But my company uses Google and its not supporting this, so i have to reenter my favorites after every ROM flash

I am using goodlink on my TILT and when i go to send an sms it doesnt pull my goodlink contacts only my sim contacts.. any clue how to access goodlink contacts for sms?
The Windows Mobile OS will only pull up the native contact list. If you are using ver 5 of GoodLink you can get the GoodLink server IT admin guys to be sure that the one way (that is from GoodLink to your native contacts) is enabled on your phone.
According to GoodLink literature the reason for this functionality is just for this reason and for things like Voice Command (or other voice dialers) that also use the native contact list. In this case the OS uses the native contact list for SMS msgs

Quick question .. how did you get goodlink on your tilt...my restore from backup method did not seem to work. Did you do an OTA install?
EDIT: See my solution posted below
What version of Goodlink are you running?
Do you know if your admin guys have upgraded to ver 5?

Just figured it out ... problem was I had goodlink on my 8525 too (which as of about 20 mins ago, when the fedex guy got here, is being retired), and I could only have it on one device at a time. Once I figured that out, just got a new PIN for the Tilt and it seems to be running the OTA provisioning without a problem.

Mine pushed out 4.9.3.21 and it's working just fine...
I got our admin guys to upgrade to 5.0 then upgraded (it automatically loaded it). It looks a little different to 4.93. its not that much of a big deal except you get a nice RSS and the ability to make a calendar appointment private (finally). BUT admin gets to see all the apps you have on your Kaiser and they can lock anything out! you can also get your admin ppl to allow good contacts to be used for native lookup (phone, sms etc.) but it didnt seem to function as well as activesyncing contacts (it doesnt show company name - in fact it doesnt sync company name and you end up with lots of UNNAMED contacts).
I also had a couple of issues on the install becuase Activesync forces you to add a password and Good doesnt like this when it installs. tyherefore in the end i did it via ahard reset.
All in all, its a luittle better. im testing it for stability before they roll it out to thers where I work.
Please report back on the experience - It would be great to know how things work before I try an push for the upgrade as well.
How well does that RSS work, and is it only set up on the phone, or does it sync with your Outlook acct? (ie - is it a box in your exchange account like the native rss support in Outlook 2007)
Good vs. BBC
I have used goodlink for years starting on my treo 650 then my trusty (kind of) 8525. The whole separate contacts thing really annoyed me so when I got my tilt I switched to, dare I say, blackberry connect. As opposed to using separate software to manage the calendar and contacts, it uses the built in wm apps so the contacts issue goes away. Just something to think about if you have the option to use either one...
Does anyone know if there is an alternate to ActiveSync?
I have been using WinMo for about a year and am disappointed that the sync software from M$ doesn't actually sync. That is to say, it doesn't look at a file - say Contacts - and use the more recently updated one to overwrite the other one, regardless of whether the newer one is on the PC or the phone.
For example, if I enter a new contact into my phone, while I am in the field, the concact does not show up on my PC after a sync. Still on the phone, but not actually synchronized to the PC.
Is there software that actually synchronizes or do they all just follow the "overwrite phone/ overwrite computer" rules?
I should mention that I sync between 2 PCs.
The best there is.

Wow!
Thanks!
Can't wait to give this a try!
Mmm it looks like it doesn't sync outlook stuff (calendar, contacts, tasks, email).. is that the case?
sounds like you have a configuration issue w/ activesync - mine will take whichever is newer, even when syncing between 2 machine. in fact, i've used my phone to sync my work and home machines by using my phone as the go-between. I think the "overwrite phone/etc" settings only kick in if a record is changed on both the phone as well as the desktop?
it sounds like he wants to Sync on 2 PC's and get all stuff on both
you can sync on 2 pcs and get everything on both. the only thing you can't sync to two machines is email...
Task Sync Error
Hi all,
I had a look but couldn't find any help on this issue, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a Tytn II running WM6, it syncs all my contacts and everything, however i have created a couple of tasks that occur on a weekly basis. I created them in Outlook and then synced them to my phone. The problem i have is when i complete the task and mark it off on my phone, the next time i sync, the task in outlook is not complete and has made a duplicate, is there any way to change this.
Thanks
hey guys, i just spent the last 1.5 hrs "fixing" my contacts (merged a bunch into one contact, fixed the last name, first name crap, etc) anyways, now that its perfect, i'm scared that if i sync it with my computer, which still has the contacts the old way, they'll just sync over to the phone and i'll be back where i started... does it default to use whats on the phone first? is there something i should change on activesync to make sure that it uses the info on the phone, and not the computer? thanks
omar
ActiveStink is suppose to default to "new change" first. So in theory, AS should change the contacts on your desktop. If there is a change on the desktop AND mobile, it is suppose to ask which change you want.
One way to make sure, is to delete the partnership that is set up in Activestink, then start a new sync. In the new partnership set up process it "should" ask if you want to replace items on desktop with the one on your mobile, or vise versa.
For good measure, having a third party app to back up your contacts my be a wise thing if all goes wrong.
If you're that worried then use a back-up program first to save the modified contacts.
When Syncing the last modified version is distributed. The only time it would overwrite from PC to phone is if you edited them on your PC or if your deleted the partnership and then established a new one with it set to always overwrite PPC Data.
ok, thanks guys, just gonna go ahead and sync it and see what happens
synced with no problems, thanks guys
Hi -- I'm running Vista Business' WMDC on my PC and WM 6.1's (ATT's unreleased, official WM6.1 ROM) ActiveSync on my Tilt. I have the sync set to replace the data on the device, but find that on occasion (mainly calendar items, but contacts, too) are being updated on my PC. Do I have the capability to fully control the direction of the sync? I want to sync only from the PC to the phone, not the phone to the PC, as any changes I make will be done at the PC.
With your phone connected via WMDC go to Mobile Device Settings>Manage a Partnership>PC Settings>choose the "If there is a conflict" dropdown menu and choose replace items on device, save.

That's exactly how I have it set, Alemaker. I've oftentimes dismissed a reminder (I set reminders days or weeks in advance and then change the reminder date as the time/date gets closer) on my Tilt, only to find it also dismissed on my PC, not reminding me at all. Until I find a definite solution, I've gotten into the habit of not dismissing the reminders on the phone. I just want to prevent the phone from doing any updating to the PC.
o.k.
This forum is a great place for issues and you may want to try posting this in the MSFT PPC newsgroups also. they can be found at microsoft.public.pocketpc. I'm sure between here and there, someone has seen this or can offer a solution.
The above setting does just what it says, uses the action you choose in case of conflict i.e same item has been changed on both devices. ActiveSync doesn't have an option to act like you want, so unless there's a hack somewhere there's no way.
Recently I've used the recovery dvd to reset my PC. I also have to install Active Sync. Strangely enough I couldn't install the disk that HTC puts into the boxes where you buy your phones in. The program says that you must install flash 8.0 or higher with a link that link you up to Adobe's website. I already did install the latest flash player. I uninstall it, reset the computer, put in the disk, hit the link, install the flash player again, restart again. Still the same message. After that I downloaded ActiveSync 4.5 at the website of Microsoft. It works okay.
When I put a new contact in the phone it won't set the contact into Word Office Outlook 2003. Otherwise it works.
I've tried to delete the device into ActiveSync and loaded up in it again but that won't work unfortunately. Please help!
Is everything else you selected to sync sychronising properly? It's not just simply that you didn't select the options when you re-installed?
Does ActiveSync come up with any error messages? It could be that you need to delete partnerships and re-establish them - in my experience ActiveSync is a bit 'fussy' when uninstalled and re-installed.
Whatever, make sure you do full backup(s) before trying anything - I lost all my data one time when an engineer 'tried' to re-establish my ActiveSync partnership!
My pc was completly turned up side down so I used the recovery dvd and that deleted the whole C disk, also ActiveSync. I do had to download ActiveSync from the website because the disk wouldn't run. And yes I do change some options.
It can not synchronised some contacts that I install on my Topaz. Installing contacts in Outlook 2003 to the device works, otherwise not.
It gives the warning code 1.
Sorry, not sure what to suggest here.
If NOTHING from the phone is syncing with Outlook (i.e. no Appointments, Tasks or whatever) it sounds to me as though it could be a problem with the firewall - if you have one set up. Try disabling that and syncing.
If it's only Contacts that aren't syncing, but it works the other way, I'm at a loss.
Worth looking at the Microsoft Support pages - but ActiveSync often seems to have a mind of its own!
Sorry I can't help.

It does Sync tasks, appointments, etc. Just a couple of contacts strangely enough :S
...and it won't sync NEW Contacts at all? I've had the problem previously where existing Contacts didn't get changed - ActiveSync seemed to have got 'confused' as to which was the most up-to-date version and I had to go through entire Contacts list making small changes, waiting for them to be replicated, and if they were not then deleting that Contact on both devices and adding them back in.
That's simpler than it reads - but if you can't add NEW Contacts from the phone I'm not sure that's the problem.
Sorry.
Thnx for your input
ive tried to synce my gmail contacts all goes well with the setup then it wont even sync i keep hitting the synce button and NOTTA. so i said fuc* it and did it all manually. must be a microsoft thing.
