Is it possible??? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to install fruityloops or protools on the g1?

Only reason i askd cuz this 1 guy had protools on his phone

Are you talking about the sound mixing software, I highly doubt it, it would ask too much of the processor for it to work

Nope. Fruityloops is a huge program that requires to much space and ram.

I swear this guy had protools on his phone. Idk if it waz an iphone or g1, i think g1 but anyway it waz on there.

prob an extremely lite version of it that was useless(just to show off)

G1 hardware UPGRADE

Alright after reading that the G1 is basically outdated and old.. and won't really get any more updates.. (read it here http://home.leakdroid.com/2009/08/17/t-mobile-g1-wont-see-any-android-updates-beyond-1-5-faked/ )
I was wondering if it's worth me keeping it.. I mean I know it's a phone it'll get old eventually.. but it's happening to quick..
so my question is there a way to physically make more internal space? Hardware upgrade or something? Causing us to use upgraded roms in the future?
From what I understand....obviously you probably cant make hardware changes easily or effectively...but...
as for them "claiming" their will be no more updates for the G1...From what I understand as long as we have rooted G1s and apps2sd we should be able to run updates from other Android devices from ROMs here at XDA...
^ is that true? I mean, if we have a hard time getting a full Hero to work... I'm no Negative Nancy, I want it all, but it does seem the G1 is limited.
sell it buy and mytouch and then purchase the sense upgrade when it comes out.

yea because that's what we want to do! My touch sucks!!!!!
Lol to each his own. I will have a hard time giving my baby up so easily. And u can't get the sense upgrade on the my touch as it is a google branded magic. Its hard for me to get excited about new android phones I dnt know why. Maybe I'm just hopelessly in love with my g1 lol
Through official channels I do not see updates past Cupcake coming. We might get a version of Donut but that would be the last. There likely will be some updates and security fixes but not a major release.
If Cyanogen keeps up his stellar work though I can not say that I particularly care. With apps2sd I think we can extend the life of the G1 for a while. I am still waiting for a better android handset with hardware keyboard before I abandon the G1.
True G1 has small amount of flash, but there aren't any other great alternative for Android fans either. Hero is a new approach on ui, but hardware is hardly an upgrade.
My g1 will keep on truckin until there is a major change in hardware being pushed out. Most likely until 3rd Q of 2010 until some snaps or tegra based phones come out to play. I hoping earlier tho.

I agree its gonna be hard to live with out a keyboard. The moto androids have keyboards but its 3 rows I think so u know what that means ladies and gents tiny crowded keyboards
I also agree, Keeping the G1 untell another TM android phone comes out with a hard keyboard
I'm thinking about the g1 as well, so I thought I'd just post in here before making a new thread .
I am a bit late to the party i guess, also looking for a new (and first..) smartphone. This far the G1 looks most appealing - capacitive touchscreen, nice keyboard and Android.. Also the price is appealing, as I can get it for around 250euros in Germany. For comparison, an iphone 3gs 16gigs will cost me like 750euros (omfg), a touchpro2 around 530.. Hero is around 420, and no keyboard.. The G1 has seemingly everything i need at a low price.
However all these rumours and claims that the RAM is too little do make me think twice.. I'm rather new to the whole idea of android and flashing roms, but I do think the memory should be ok, as I dont really want 100 apps.. If I flash the latest Cyanogen rom, how much free flash memory will I have left?
The only things I do need on the phone is the browser, gmail, googlemaps (not a hard need tho) and some VNC client so that I can hopefully access my home PC over it.
Do I need to look into another phone, or will the g1 have enough memory (and speed) to make me happy? Are there any other qwerty android phones coming out soon (even tho I dont cherish the idea of a 500eur phone..)?
Soz for the lenghty post ;D
Take care!

Right now... G1 is the best deal out there. Depending on how long you're planning to keep your phone of course. If you want it for more then couple of years... wait to see what comes out... you'll want something with more ram (256+). If you plan on swapping phones in a year or so - get the G1, it has everything what other phones have out there, just less ram.
personaly, if i were to be jumping on board, id realy look hard at picking up a used G1 on ebay or some thing, prob pick it up about the same or less than a new contract phone. that way you can have what is currently the best, but not be locked into contract yet. then when the latest/greatest snapdragon powerd monster finaly hits, you can jump on it at a subsidised price.
currently, with the " danger" spl i have 89megs avail internal... but i run a2sd so i still have 100+ apps + with the latest recovery, i have 20+ roms on the sd, and a ton of themes etc...
the only thing that go's on internal memory now is just misc data.... a couple megs at most...

According to a thread on the tmobile forum and reference to cyan's tweet....G1 will be getting future updates...so dont give up tht easy...KEYBOARD FTW !!!!!
i have a STRONG GUT FEELEING that by oficial updates all we will see out of tmoble is security patches, and updates to oficial apps etc...
its tmobles way of trying to hush a volitile issue by vaguely stating that they will publish upgrades and continue to suport the phone. if they didnt they'd be looking at a million + upset customers, many of wich are recent subscribers to a soon to be out of date phone..
hell, dont they still sell the dash? it came out like 4 years ago, and was a base model " smart phone" they still " suport" it... security patches... lol..
so, my take...
major updates will require root, and updates from here!
might as well get on the danger spl bandwagon, give the developers a little more breathing room to add stuff, and who cares if they pull apps off the rom like amazon mp3 etc... kill the fluff that we can ad back on ourselves..

Danger SPL and More Internal Storage
First of all, G! FOREVER. I'l just keep letting Cyan and other stuff on more code. My question, though, is does the Danger SPL upgrade internal storage somehow? I just updated to the Danger SPL and noticed that I have more internal storage. Is this reading correct or is the Danger SPL causing an incorrect reading? I don't really care much because I use A2SD but I was just curious.

thats correct the whole point of it is that is smaller to allow for Hero
To elaborate, the /cache partition is shrunk (since it is mostly unused outside OTA updates) and the extra shared between /data (internal storage, where your apps go) and /system (more space for the OS).
type df at terminal to see partition sizes.

Is it worth

Is it worth me taking a new dream from Tmobile UK and rooting it to get a Hero ROM so I can have the new UI ??
Are there any problems with the ROM ?? that would stop it being used day to day ? also is it worth trading googlemail push for Microsoft Active Sync for Exchange which I used before on my WM device. ??
Hero is a port from a device with higher specs so to run on a g1, there will be a noticeble inherit slowness. I believe you will still have gmail on a hero rom though. For day to day use I would use a cyanogen rom. If you do want to run hero, you will need to partion your sd card into 3 partions, hero also has problems missing text, no bluetooth and no led notiifacations
Thankyou
Sounds pretty much like its not worth it then shame cause i love the dream QWERTy keyboard trying to type emails with on screen keyboard is a nightmare.
are there any screen shots of this ROM you mentioned ? What is good about this ROM ?
I just got the Dream yesterday it was supposed to be a Hero but they sent the wrong phone and offered me line rental discount if i kept it.
I just not sure if I should send it back and get hero.

it depends on how much you want the physical keyboard. personally i wouldn't be able to give it up. the cyanogen rom he mention looks like a stock rom unless you theme. sorry don't know where i can get stock screen shot right now. you can probably google it though.
Go over the devolpment sub-forum and go into cyanogenmod thread, you can see screnshots there, go witht the stable version which is 4.04, basiclly the feel and look of a stock rom but optimize for performance, it is the top rom for speed and stabilty at the moment. You can also download the cm updater from the market to stay on top of updates and a easy way to flash for now on. But make sure you make a nandroid backup for a just in case cause every once in a while you can get a bad download. Highly suggest also flashing cyanogen's pimped out recovery 1.4
Thanks for the info I might just hold off for a while and see how I go with stock ROM although I suspect I need to do something cause i am struggling to find any widgets that I want to use on the phone as standard

im pretty sure you could find a g1/dream on ebay or somewhere fairly cheap so if you can i would get the hero and have the g1 i mean i am buying a practically brand new g1 from a friend that is rooted with the 1.33.2005 spl for $100 maybe i just got really lucky.
You got lucky, I just got mine from t-mobile for 150 with a new 2 year contract, so hopefully my g1 won't be extremely out of date and unsupported by then. At least by then there should be a new android phone with a snapdragon or tegra processor with 500mb ram and a pyshical keyboard which will blow away the g1 and even hero. Who knows by then we might have full graphic support with some cool ass games. Just hope we can get some better battery life by then

actually gridlock is pretty much wrong.
bluetooth doesnt work but i dont need it so i can live without it. LEDs dont fully work. it shines green whenever i get something new,but it doesnt blink.
missing text only exist is some hero roms... in JACs 1.6r2a , sms works fine. there is a slowness when compared to other cupcake builds, but hero runs pretty fast in my opinion. just cyanogens cupcake builds run faster.
i really like the sense ui and included widgets. multitouch is nice. and watching youtube in High quality over a 3g network is wonderful.
i love using the twitter widget. its soo useful. i only use twitter to follow devs, android news, tmonews, and new ROM news. so its easy to keep track of what the devs are doing and releasing
also i enjoy using my phone as a wifi access point, so i can use my laptop anywhere i go.
there is lag at times, but its not like SUPER SLOW. and you cant open the keyboard while at the homescreen. u just cant yet. but in apps u can.
isn't there hero free from tmobile uk with a contract? or was that only for a while back? i remember seeing it when it was released. i would definitely get the hero then just buy a g1 off ebay or something. then just alternate between the 2. also it would take a large discount for me to keep the g1.
don't get me wrong i love my g1 but it would be easier to buy a g1 that it would be to buy a hero, just my opinion.
Ok so how do you figure I am wrong, you just backed up what I said, ok so you get your led to shine but it is still not correctly working, you backed up what I said about it being slower, I was saying hardware wise, and you backed up saying that some hero roms miss texts. Can you run your hero without swap or compchace without having a significant difference, I don't think so. Yes hero roms are getting better but in all reality how was I pretty much wrong when you said the same thing in nicer terms. Just out of curiosity. I think it just comes down to a matter of opinion

"hero also has problems missing text, no bluetooth and no led notiifacations"
jacs hero 1.6r2a has no sms issues. the ones that have sms issues are the one thats older and outdated, or the new hero roms that hasnt been optimized.
LED notifications exist. just not as good as cupcake, but they are there.
its late and i dont feel like arguing with u. hero does have lag compared to cupcakes builds, but its not major
i say get the hero and than get a g1 i got one from craigslist practically new without contract for 130=D
Just been looking down the specs
The Dream and Hero are pratically the same apart from the memory and camera.
Not really to bothered by the camera anyways I got a 12mp camera if i want a photo. The video on the Hero is poor anyways. The only thing id be paying for is widgets at the expense of a full keyboard of the dream.
I suspect the increase in ROM and RAM is only to allow the Hero to run the Sense UI interface.
I think im going to stick with the dream.....

Is 192 RAM a not enough?

I am planning on buying a HTC G1, but after I read that there is only 192mb RAM I decided to wait.
I have a few questions:
1. Can you make a swapfile on the G1?
2. Would there be a big speed/stability difference with 192 and 256 RAM?
3. How does 2.0/2.1 run compared to 1.6?
I will be using this as a PDA, not a phone and will be doing lots of gaming and web browsing on it.
Thank you,

save up for one. Don't get a g1, it's already too outdated. save up and buy a good phone that'll last a while. By the time you have the money tucked away I'm sure you'll see phones even better than the nexus one.
Yes, I already have a high-end winmo PDA, so I am looking for a lower end Android phone.
I agree with others that say to get a different phone. I love my G1 to death, but there's no way I'd buy one today if I were in the market. It's just too limited.
That said, I'll try and answer your questions.
1. Yes, running swap is possible using a rooted phone and custom ROM. It's debated whether this actually helps any.
2. The 192 vs. 256 MB difference helps a great deal. There's just not a lot of memory left to run many apps and do much task switching on the newer iterations of the OS with only 192MB. The number of apps you can install is also limited by this number (unless you're running a rooted phone and installing apps to your SD card.)
3. On a G1, 2.0/2.1 is pretty slow. At this point I wouldn't use it as a daily use ROM.
The two functions you listed as your primary activities are the two things that the G1 does the worst. It's underpowered for a lot of games (not to mention the horrible battery life when you start playing games) and browsing the web can be a chore given the limited memory and CPU. It works great for basic things like email, maps/navigation, music, productivity apps, but it's pretty slow for other stuff.
OK, thank you. That is the kind of answer I was looking for. I will look into some other phones.
The G1 is ideal for what your looking for. Man people love to drift off don't they
Yeah they do...
Has anyone else tried Android 2.1 on their G1?
If you root it, in addition to the debatable swapping to the SD for more ram and cache, you can overclock the things. Probably a bit hard on your battery and might generate unacceptable heat, don't know. You might just get it up to 2/3's to 3/4th's the speed of a Nexus for the cost of a bigger battery. Maybe then you could run 2.1 effectively. Who knows.
I'd buy it used. They go for about $175 on ebay unlocked. If you screw it up you've not lost that much. You can resell your broken one on ebay for about $75

Overall the G1 for me has just been fun to root and flash multiple roms. =P Some roms are moderately fast, but are limited to games as we have no video drivers
Thanks for the good answers. So the Open GL drivers are not available on the G1? And how easy is it to brick a G1. Ive flashed many roms on winmo with no problem.
EDIT: Yes I will overclock. Are the Vid drivers available on the Magic?

Yeah they are
Personally
I preordered a G1... rooted it early in the beginnings of Haykuro and JF... and 16 months later I still say there isnt a replacement... I got a full upgrade and I still havent taken advantage... The N1 is nice, if you can live wo the hard keyboard... If you want a low end android, the G1 is a good starter phone...
I run both 2.1 and 1.6 roms.. The 1.6 roms are really fast, The 2.1 roms are worth having on your phone to show off... I can stream music on 3G from 8am to about 230-3pm at work on either so batt life is fine either way on a normal day...
I dont know what kind of gaming you do, but my old school emulators do the trick nicely run on any rom and with the hard keyboard controls are great... I use a ram hack that removes the 3d accelerator for another 8mb of usable ram, so I cant comment on 3d games...
Bricking a G1 is almost impossible now with all the good tutorials... the G1 is the easiest to root, hack, flash, customize... all that in my own eyes... Ive brought noobs down the rabbit hole and now they are cookin up roms and themes like crazy...
I on the other hand still patiently wait for a new bigger better stronger phone (with a hard keyboard) to replace my G1 and I know it will not be in the low end android bracket..

So far I'm convinced about the G1, thanks everybody. When I found out that the keyboard on the magic would not work with a stylus, and only your fingers, it made it obvious for me.
PS: Can you disable the RAM hack without reflashing?

Not really. You must replace the kernel, so it's basically just as complicated as reflashing.
I'ts simple.
Flash the boot.img and reboot.
All gone.
(and vice versa)
you wont loose any data or anything.

Where's all my RAM?

I thought I had 512MB of ram on this. I opened task killer and it says 117mb free. Surly Android isn't using all of the other ram?
There is a small bug/issue with the stock Android o/s even 2.1 suffers from this.
With the mod/kernel I use below I can get up to about 275mb right after a fresh app task wipe. Then closer to 200-220mb when under normal use which is pretty good.

You need to install a kernel that utilizes highmem. Basically, the easiest way to achieve this is to install a rom which has this by default (cyanogen is a popular option).
It's busy doing what it was put in the phone to do.
The other half hasn't woken up yet.
what they are saying is that google has not yet enabled the other half of the nexus one's RAM yet. so the stock nexus one only has half of the 512MB active, which is 256MB. so some of the custom ROMS, when rooted and installed, open up that additional RAM, giving the full 512MB.
who knows why google did this. maybe they thought it was a battery saving issue and that 256MB was plenty for users. or maybe they have some surprise in store for the nexus and will open it up in an upcoming OTA update.
This is a huge disappointment. I can't root because I can't risk breaking my nexus I paid the full price for it!
paid full wack for mine also, but hey what the heck, rooted and stuff as soon as it came through the door.

I paid full price for mine too and my wife's N1. You wont brick your phone unless you screw up a Radio flash for the most part.
So either get comfortable with it and flash everything you want, just flash to a new modded o/s or just leave your phone alone and wait for Google.
In the end you do have to be comfortable knowing your warranty could be in jeopardy though. I have heard some cases of HTC still fixing hardware defects on rooted phones.
Ahhh I want to, I really do, but I so much don't want to break this

This has been well discussed at length, and has been one of the bashing points used by the fan boys.
Besides that, the info in here is a bit wrong. It isn't set at 256MB, it is more like just shy of 400 IIRC, want to say 388 to be exact.
Also, have you noticed a lack of RAM yet? You say you still have 100MB free? Well, that is pretty damn good to say the least. Do you really need another 100MB of RAM sitting there doing nothing?
And it isn't a bug either... grrrr... it is because the Kernel's that do support the extra RAM were not stable enough at launch. Can you imagine what sort of uproar there would have been from people if their phone jsut randomly rebooted once every couple days? Maybe even once a day?
You're right. The lowest I've been to is 30mb free, when I was running around 7 apps. I'll just wait for the official google fix
before rooting, task killer would only free up about 70mb, i think. don't quite remember. now, after rooting and flash to enom's rom, task panel can free up around 260mb

That's because you're killing services and apps that don't need to be kill and actually have a negative impact on loading speeds.

There you go! It is one of those things, when you notice your numbers are too "low" you are like what the heck? But until you saw the numbers, you never thought to yourself "man I wish I had more RAM since this thing is slow and can't multi-task my apps right".
I ran bone stock for the first month I had my Nexus One, never said once to myself I wish it was faster or had more RAM, ok that is a lie I always want faster, but never once was I honestly sitting there saying that because the phone was so slow.
I did finally root and start flashing (a month without flashing is a REALLY long time for me, longest I have ever owned a smartphone without flashing). And to be honest, despite what some may say, the custom ROMs really are not that much faster, and it matters about the kernel more than anything. And actually, I run into lag at times with custom ROMs that are not there with the stock ROM, granted some tasks are a bit quicker, I have themese, and what not to make up for it. None the less, speed and stability can co-exist, but you have to give up one for the other in general.
just root the thing and move on with life... ive got news for you... if you drop the thing on concrete and shatter the screen, HTC doesnt care whether its rooted or not... YOU BROKE IT YOU FIX IT
my car has like 50,000 mile warranty on it, but im pretty sure if i pour jet fuel into it instead of gasoline and I blow my block, the dealership is going to laugh at me and my warranty even if my car only has 200 miles on it...
root it and take care of it... its really not that hard...

upgrade worthy?

I have the sony xperia lt30p, its pretty great for what i use w/ it ( got some current .. eh, customizing issues w/ kernals n roms n such but thats another issue) but this phone seems to take the cake with upgrades in all aspects of what i love about my current xperia T.
Is it worth upgradin my phone to this one? ( in usa, and use straighttalk so gotta buy phone out right) and if i do, if i sell my currentone, is it still worth something decent? ( on those websites or soemthing)
i mainly use it for photos ( has camera button, why i went w/ it over S3 n others) and some apps for reference ( medical apps, goin on rotations soon, where i actually use it more than cuirrently) -
sometimes i run into lag issues w/ my current phone when tryin to load some of those apps, and dunno if its my fault w/ tryin to do kernals and such, or just its not fast enough and is runnin as well as it can.. ( but.. now i realize how can yall know from that lil info.. cant.. ) ...
So what i guess im askin i ntaht ramblin post above, is the speeed of the phone a noticable upgrade alont w/ the additional RAM? on paper it seems alot, but what about realworld performance?
What about this PS4 connectivity? is that cool n all? I had a xbox and waiting to see how these new consoles (XB1 and PS4) pan out, and then make a decision, and if the PS4 connectivity is cool, then id have to consider that
One last bit im wonderin about, is the battery size increase.. Does it actually pan out to be a large beneift? or since the new hardware is "better" does it take more juice to run it, so the battery size increase isnt nearly as much?
Thanks, and exited to hear yealls thoughts
* and sorry for the rambleness, didnt take ADD meds over break and just did so im kinda goin a million miles a minute

sometimes i run into lag issues w/ my current phone when tryin to load some of those apps, and dunno if its my fault w/ tryin to do kernals and such, or just its not fast enough and is runnin as well as it can.. ( but.. now i realize how can yall know from that lil info.. cant..
* and sorry for the rambleness, didnt take ADD meds over break and just did so im kinda goin a million miles a minute

if you could unlock your bootloader stay with the T for a while, we are stuck without being able to unlock the bootloader without losing the camera. So it doesnt worth it.
but if you want a sexy phone that really works out of the box, sure why not get the z1

z1 snapdragoon 800 processor got a built in power saver so yes the incresead battery works very good
