doesnt that information change depending on if i use a x1a or x1i rom? like right now it says "x1i", if i installed a x1a would it say "x1a"?

This is possibly correct. But the better method is to go into Settings, System, Device Information. Select the Hardware tab. Beside the first entry, CPU, you'll see one of two things:
"QUALCOMM(R) 7200A" means you've got X1i
"QUALCOMM(R) 7201A" means you've got X1a
I've got the X1a running an X1i ROM, but it still shows the correct CPU identifier. This is the only difference between the devices: the CPU is nearly identical, but the 7201A was produced to obey a U.S. patent ruling in favour of Broadcomm that claims infringement by the video compression tech in the 7200A. Therefore the 7201A uses non-infringing methods that end up reducing the device's video recording rate to 24 FPS at QVGA res and 10 FPS at VGA res. HTC apparently uses the 7201A in all North American devices that would otherwise use the 7200A abroad.
The 7201A is otherwise designed to be completely compatible and interchangeable with the 7200A, which is why ROMs can be used interchangeably. They have the same Radio ROM and same band frequencies (contrary to some false reports in these and other forums) - the Xperia is a 3G "world" phone, and meaning the X1i can do 3G on Rogers and AT&T in North America, and the X1a can do 3G on European and Asian carriers.
No 3G on T-Mobile US though, because of T-Mo's stupid use of 1700 MHz.
ahh thank you benjamin looks like i have a x1i. So there is no way i can connect to 3G? sometimes i see a G instead of the E, but its only for like 5 seconds. wish t-mobile was better.

I spotted this on PDADb
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1387
It mentions a new KAISER 140 model. Anyone knows of it? I didn't find another mention.
UPDATE: It seems that it supports "UMTS1700", unlike the other models?
You can see a comparison table here:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=1387&id2=733
I think it is the Emonster model that people have previously mentioned.
Not much difference really.
This Kaiser should work on either AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. It should work in Europe as well sporting all those data bands.
I want one.
Do any AT&T insiders know if the current Tilt will be upgraded to this version of the Kaiser? It's nice to see that this new version is supporting UMTS1700 More bands, the better. It's too bad the Diamond Pro isn't supporting as many UMTS bands as the Kaiser or Hermes
Why would AT&T want to have a phone that supports a Frequency Band it doesn't use?

PDAdb still says that the Kaiser has a transflective screen. Anyone tried to use your GPS outdoors in bright sunlight?
Hi guys,
Well, the shop that originally sold me the GSM Diamond has exchanged it to the proper 3G unlocked version.
Do not want to go through the bother with shipping back to Japan and dealing with customs. Besides I pre-ordered my Touch Pro with expansys
Thus, I have a new 3G model up for grabs. I paid 750 Canadian for it. Will let it go for 650 CDN.
Thanks.
This would be 3G on Rogers Network? Are you sure of this?
Has it been opened our used yet?
There is no network associated with this. It should be an HTC Retail version that is 3G capable hardware wise. Weather you choose to use it in a 3G network area is up to yourself.
It would be unopened but to be honest I have asked my friend to open it and make sure that it is the correct model that the shop is exchanging for me. So, in actuality it will be opened but unused. He is just going to make sure it is indeed unlocked and 3G.
The reason for this is when I orginally bought the diamond from this shop before returning to Japan they gave me the Indian GSM model, which they are not exchanging as mentioned.
I guess if it is a huge issue to anyone I can ask him not to open it and go by the specs on the box. Buyers choice. But, I need to know as the new one should be in by Thursday.
thx
Careful potential buyers, there is no Diamond, with any ROM, that currently supports North American 3G bands... Only 900/2100mhz. Does not have the hardware necessary to do so.
Thanks for that. Perhaps the best thing is for me to ship it back to Japan and sell here. Not sure if this can be included in any future radio/rom update/upgrade at this point.
But it is the 3G version but as mentioned about supports 1900/2100 frequencies.
Currently:
HSDPA/WCDMA:
*
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
*
Up to 384 kbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Yeah, didn't wanna be a jerk and get you out of a sale, but people should know what they're buying. I'd ship it back to Japan if I were you, that's probably your best bet (unless someone would rather have EDGE on their Diamond now than 3G on it in a few months).
np,
I would just recommend that anyone thinking about it read the specs on the HTC site for the current model.
thx
I'm gonna keep this thread alive for the next 3 days, then it will be closed and cleaned up!
What the hell????
I bought one from ebay.
rom version is ASIA WWE.
No front camera.
Why?
I didnt know there were 2 different versions.
Pictures please. Could be fake...
you bought the version without 3G
After doing a little research just now i found this...
My diamond came branded with an Airtel startup logo.
so I searched a bit and found this is a company from india.
now I am guessing the phone came from india.
although the seller did not say.
anyway.
looking on the offical HTC websites and navigating different countries you can see that most, if not all, have pictures of the actual phone with the front camera.
except for.... INDIA...
http://www.htc.com/in/product.aspx?id=48110
look on the official specs...
Camera 3.2 megapixel color camera with auto focus
it doesn't even mention the front camera as in other countries.
and the pictures don't show the front camera either.
now thats something...
why? no clue....
but beware that this can happen with you too...
I guess I will have to live frontcameraless ...
check this and the comments too:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/05/23/india-picks-up-htc-touch-diamond-3g-not-included/
apparently it has no 3g.. petroOMG is right..
and also it seems that the phone is cheaper in india becoz of this.
I was wondering if it could be a firmware lock only, but I guess the price difference answers my question...
I have modded my phone ... before noticing this..
Upgraded the Radio Version and Firmware to a cooked one..
Everything is working fine.. reception is normal..
I cannot test 3g though as my carrier doesn't support it at the moment.
oh welll.. if you gona think about it it is no big deal for me...
here in my city in brazil 3G is still being implemented and only some areas of the city has coverage with lots of dropouts... everything "beta" at the moment.
At least its not a fake...
Or just put it back on eBay, sell it on and then get the one you want?
Up to you. Depends if you can live without the front facing camera or not.
I occasionally use it so find it pretty useful but i bet most of the Diamond users out there don't bother with it.

the reason is that the phone is made for India, wich country doesn;t have a 3g network. There is no reason for secondary camera for 3g phone calls
Hello ppl....i,m putting this information in block letters because i want everyone to see......the phone makers are taking away front camera option we cant use front camerato take anymore pictures....only when we make video calls can the fron cam be use.....the same with my nokia 6600 slide......spread the word
I don't think it's a "no 3g" thing..
the US 3g doesn't have one either. I wonder if it has to do with the market instead. (regulations, licensing, etc.)
maybe in regions where video-calls are not supported, the devices are coming without front camera?
Different areas differnent Diamond
North American Version (USA) has 1350 mh battery and dont have front camera and 3G for american bands, mine is this.
Argentina version (Personal Opereator) has the same bands that the american (is ok for us), has 1350 mh BATTERY (as the north america version) and front camera.
Depends the country and the operator.
Sorry for my english

True, this version is different from Airtel, 3G support, but if this is not for video call, come in the box specifications.
The chip is not MSM7206A is MSM7201A

Version US
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/touchdiamond/specification.html
And this is European version.
I have one that odesnt have the front camera, does that mean that i can't get 3G coverage in areas around me that have it? I have a radio version that supports 3G but if the phone itself doesnt have 3G capability then ill send it back...
I also bought the same from ebaybut onlt for 175$ and it has no front camera, although, i'm happy to have a diamond on the price of carbon!
Why you guys are worried?
My fone is a 3G handset, and i never make a video call, so, why i afraid of not having a cheap VGA front cam?
If you guys too, never made a video call and then also reading this post!
Shame on You!!!!
Don't worry n Be happy!!!!
I'm with T-Mobile and am thinking of upgrading from my MDA Compact lll to the MDA Compact lV. On youtube, someone is demonstrating a Sprint version of the diamond which doesn't have the bevelled back to it, it has a smooth back and is thicker than the diamond.
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=35q4g6dZdM8&feature=user
The pictures on the T-Mobile site show the same back as the sprint so it's obviously the sprint they're selling.
What are the functional differences between the two, and how much better is the MDA compact 4 from the MDA compact 3?
Has more RAM/ROM, Touch Flo works much more smoothly, no front vga camera, has bigger battery. I think that is it.

Thanks. It would help if you told me which has these things, the sprint or the non sprint?
The sprint version has those things
BUT the sprint is CDMA, and no locale of T-mobile is CDMA.

Thanks for the clarification, so the sprint is generally better than the slimmer HTC diamond is that right?
Not sure exactly what CDMA is but is this referring to 3G?
You're saying T-Mobile doesn't do 3G?
Almost all cellphone carriers are 3G. CDMA is the standard used by Sprint and Verizon (and some others), GSM is the standard used by AT&T and T-Mobile (and some others including most of the world lol).
Yes. Most of the world still uses GSM, but that doesn't make it better. GSM still uses TDMA-like technology, which severely limits it's capability. That's why you get such slow data-rates and low capacity. In fact, the newer "GSM" standards are migrating to CDMA technology (although that doesn't make it compatible with CDMA networks). I know, it's confusing.

Exactly, hopefully the rest of the world adapts to CDMA sooner rather than later. A global standard of CDMA would be nice for them and for me ;-)
Thanks. Btw, apparently the MDA Compact lV is not the sprint after all. Someone informed me that most of the carriers for some reason seem to replace the back with a smooth one. That's a pity, considering the sprint has a bigger battery life.
Does anyone know if my Artemis battery would fit into the compact lV? It's an ARTE160, 1200mAh made by Sanyo. It gives me great battery life.
Tmobile isnt selling the "sprint". T-Mobile sell the Compact IV, it is different from the Diamond by having a smooth back, different styling and is slightly lighter. There are no other differences.
T-Mobile Mda compact IV
As far as I know MDA Compact IV is exactly the same thing as HTC Diamond in terms of hardware. MDA compact IV is actually HTC Victor. (Different countries different names)
The battery is the same also, 900mAh.
The only thing people say is that there are not 192 megs of ram but 128 accessible to the system.
Actually, T-Mobile sell the HTC Victor, which is essentially the Diamond in a different case. I believe this can be purchased in Asian markets but not European ones.
I believe only O2 (in the UK) sell the Diamond (and it is the Diamond, not the Victor!) with a flat back. I know Orange sell it with the bevelled back and I 'think' Vodafone do too.

Now I'm confused, but only a bit
If the O2 Diamond has a flat back case, and the T-Mobile Victor is 'essentially' the Diamond with a flatback case, these are exactly the same phone just different names or there is some other minor differences apart from the cases? I'd not heard of the HTC Victor and cannot find anything mentioned about it on the xda-developers page which shows names and pictures of all their models.
i updated the phone with a few diff roms, but i have no idea which one the actual phone is from start?
As I was told by SE a long while ago, the "i" stands for International, I am guessing the "a" might stand for America? Since no one here in the UK has the X1a, but after all, X1, X1i, X1a should all be the same on the nutshell. If ever in doubt, e-mail SE directly on their website, the guys do get back to you withing a couple of days.
Look at the sticker under the battery. It'll say which one it is.
it just says X1
Go to :
Setting/Sytem/Device Information/Identity
This screen should tell you, Model, platform and IMEI#

As of now, the black ones are X1i, and the silver, X1a. Tough it's going to change in the near future, if not already. Another way to find out, is trying to record a video with the camera. If the resulting video is VERY slow (8-10fps) then you have a X1a.

True. And a good point should I say.
Record some 10 secs of video and then use TCPMP to check how many FPS you filmed. I tested both the X1a and X1i and TCPMP showed 7-10 FPS for X1a and 20-24 FPS for X1i
I have owned both X1i and x1A. X1A is clearly indicated in the sticker behind the battery AND on the box.

Hi guys, I'm a Necromancer.
I'm looking to buy an Xperia X1a, was just wondering how to tell from ebay sellers if they're selling the X1a or X1i just from looking at the pictures. I've tried emailing them but so far none fo them know, they just say things like "Its an Xperia X1".
If the phone comes with an American charger, is it safe to assume it's the X1a version of the phone ?
Also, what do you guys think would be a fair price for a fairly used X1 these days ?
I have better phones already, I even had an X1 before but sold It, I just wanna have one and keep it. Though I'm having a hard time trying to justify buying one seeing that LG Expo is going for pretty much the same price and its like, a LOT better than the X1.

That's not correct, both the X1a and X1i have front facing cameras for video call. Its just the bands, the sticker beneath the battery, and the camera's video quality that are different.
