SPL-update before donut? Which one? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm from Germany and waiting for the EU update to Donut.
At the moment I have the stock-donut on my G1, not rooted or anything else.
A few months ago I tried some custom images, but none of them looked good on me.
Now, before updating to donut I'm thinking on installing another SPL, so I can try other images in future, withput using goldcard an very old images.
What SPL would you suggest?
HardSPL?
Haykuro SPL?
Thanx a lot.

If your not gonna be using hero builds, you should stick with the HardSPL
The Haykuro SPL will give you more room for ROM's and Apps but it wont matter if you use a regular rom with apps2sd. The chances of bricking are quite high here compared to the other SPL and its not recommended if your just a beginner. HardSPL has better compatibility and has a reduced chance of bricking

Have questions can anyone help?

I am running JF 1.51 with app2sd. I am really wanting to try the magic rom. I have the latest radio that was required to update to cupcake. I am nervous about updating the SPL because I accidently install the radio twice on my last G1 and it fried it. Is it worth the switch? If so how do I change from JF and then go to the Hero rom? I have found some stuff but nothing on switching SPL from JF to any other without bricking my phone.
Thanks in advance....
Sorry not magic rom HERO ROM.
Make sure your phone has the PVT board (it will tell you in your current SPL screen). If you do, I recommend this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3816278&postcount=3
I followed to a "T" without any problems.
Good luck and a little positive energy toward your fone never hurt You will need the newest SPL to load HERO due to the size of the ROM. I know some people have piece-mealed their on HERO builds making them smaller than the orig Haykuro one, but I think they all still require the newest SPL. Just remember, more than just a couple of people have bricked their fones flashing this SPL...
Aloha-
That just seems odd to me I am not sure... So I should have JF 1.51 on one card and the SPL on the other? Which goes in first. I have the JF boot loader now. How do you know what SPL you have? Can I update from one to the other without bricking?
Hold camera then power and the SPL screen will come up and tell u what version u have (if it's rainbow screen you are still on stock). There are many threads dealing with flashing the SPL. Check Haykuro's blog also. I don't want to give some information and someone have bad results. So I recommend reading all that u can before you try.

These are a good place to start. U might need dig around a little, and I recommend reading a lot. Don't try it if you're not comfortable.
Ok thanks I will do some more reading... I have stock then... When i rooted it it was the rainbow... Thanks again.
Ok Want to check to make sure...
This iis what I got on the Rainbow screen...
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
Radio-2.22.19.26i
So I should be able to follow that first tutorial you sent becuase I take it that this is a PVT board.
One last thing If I do update the SPL can I stay with JF builds if I decide too?
Anyone? I have been searching and I can not figure out some answers. Like if I do not want to update to hero now and stay with JF can I? Or if I do in the 2 card tutorial on updating SPL can I have hero already or since I am on JF 1.51 now do I have to stay with it then after done wipe then install hero rom?
Changing the SPL will not limit you to a specific ROM so you should be able to run Haykuro's 1.5, JF's 1.5 (including all variations) as well as HERO etc... Some ROM's larger size necessitate the use of the newer SPL because it's smaller (the SPL that is). Also need to remember that once you commit to the new SPL, you cannot downgrade the radio as per Haykuro. Be careful moving from the stock SPL to the newest one. I'm not sure if there could be any problems, you might search for something related to that subject. Also, what's really great about using non-stock SPL's is that they allow the use of fastboot to reflash the .img's created by the Recovery console. Which means once you have a good stable ROM on your fone, you back it up and play with your fone all u want (pretty much) knowing that u can go right back to the "good" build you backed using just 3 simple commands from fastboot. Good luck.
Aloha-

[SOLVED] once rooted always rooted?

First of all forgive me if this question as been asked a million times but to be honest I'm finding the Dream section a mess.
Now onto my question.... I've rooted my G1 and I'm currently running JF 1.51 with hero skin, now I'm I correct that I will always be rooted as long as I stick to custom roms?
The other thing is when I go into recovery mode I get a message at the top of the screen something like "Unable to find /system/command/recovery.cmd" am I correct that means I'm unable to proform backups? which is no big deal for me.
Finally whats the deal with this new spl, do I really need it to run a hero ported rom? I only ask because in all my years flashing windows phones the spl is something you should flash once and leave alone to avoid errors that can brick your phone.
Yes you will always be rooted. Not really sure on the recovery thing...You might want to try to fix that by flashing another recovery image. Yes you need the new spl to run the hero ROM since its HUGE

Thanks for the fast reply, as for the recovery thing like I said I would never back anything up and restore it anyway (I've always started afresh with every new rom)
Now going back to the spl thing.... Ive already updated my radio to the latest so when I do finally go for a hero rom and do flash my spl is the new spl a custom one which will allow me to reflash back down to a non-hero rom? or do I have to go back to the orginal hardspl first?
The new SPL was released by haykuro and it allows you to have about 30 more mb of space on your system partition. It still allows you to flash non-hero ROMs as well as hero ROMs. Sorry for the slow response >.>
Thanks alritewhadeva everything is clearer now.

How to revert back to original rom.

Hi i have a htc dream and rooted/flashed it to tmobile g1 with a hero rom. Now i'm selling the phone and would like to revert it back to my default rom as in how it was when i brought the phone.
how should i do about it?
Thanks!
I am guessing sense you have a hero rom you have Haykuro's spl, if you need to revert back to the orginal rom just go over to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592662 , jonzina has the step's to follow, just follow to the T and you will be fine.
there is also a walkthrough at www.cyanogenmod.com in the wiki
pretty simple process. flash the rc29 dream.nbh and wait for an OTA update to get you up to date pretty much. just follow the steps in the wiki.
the problem is, mine is a singtel set, its not a t-mobile g1, its a htc dream though now it becomes g1 after rooting and rom. i want to revert back to before. can i still use the dream.nbh?
Just a heads up, if you have the 1.33.2005 SPL required for Hero ROMs and you use DREAIMG.NHB to downgrade, you will brick.
To avoid that:
1) Wipe then flash a ROM that does *not* require 1.33.2005, (eg Cyanogen Mod)
2) Flash the stock SPL as update.zip
i'm so confused now =/
edit:how do i check spl ver?
With the phone powered off, press and hold the camera button and power, which will bring you into bootloader mode...if you were running a hero rom, you should have 3 androids on skateboards at the bottom of the screen (1.33.2005 SPL)...if so, do what AdrianK said
ok! but i still can use the DREAIMG.NHB from t-mobile? as mine is the not the t-mobile set, mine is a singtel htc dream. able to use the same method?
Some people WANT custom roms on their phone and are scared to do it themselves. Im recommending Cyanogens rom because its so fast and stable. If I were you I would post it as is, that way it stands out from the 100+ other G1 sellers.
If you don't see the response you were looking for just update it and reinstall the stock one.... just my 2 cents.
haha..how you know i'm selling.. you are right maybe i should try what you suggested. anyway how do i change roms? my current hero rom is the my one and only one.. likey to be out dated and laggy. last time follow guide to root and flash, what about updating? just dl rom and flash? haha

This kinda gave it away.. lol. I also had a hero rom and hated it because it was soooo slow. Just follow the directions here and it will boot up and work 100%

Might wanna use 4.2.5. ROM at the moment though, users have been posting issues on the newest version, go here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/download/rom/update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip
wahahaha..so sorry.. didn't remember i mention before..ahahaha.. ok ok thanks! yeah my hero rom is abit laggy how bout those released now? any idea how to revert back to my singtel htc dream rom incase they prefer it that way?
thanks for your advise! sold my phone with cyanogen
Nice!!! Im glad I was able to help... get another G1 or other android phone.

what is the danger spl and how does it differ from hard spl?

why do the eclair and hero roms require it?
and what is an spl exactly? from my understanding it's similar to a bios on a pc?
Hakykuro SPL is the SPL from the ,agic with some hex edits and other things by Haykuro himself. It reallocates the data partition of the phone from 45MB-->90MB which allows larger roms like hero to be installed. This is dangerous because it can brick phones since it wasnt made for us to use. The data partition was 45 because the rest was used by the OTA thing from tmo that reserved that space, but OTA is useless for rooted devices so the SPL allows heros to be born!

^ 100% right, this. It's a dirty little hack to give us the room to dev, and it's dangerous, but man, it has allowed for some amazing stuff.
so why is it risky? what causes the potential for bricking?

If you don't have the right radio it WILL brick your phone
Just make sure you flash the correct radio, reboot
Flash the SPL, reboot
and the majority of the time you are fine
There has been people who claim they were on the correct radio version and still ended up with a brick, hence it being dubbed "The Danger SPL" cause anything can happen

lol, actually I have been using danger and running hero roms for about a month. so far so good!
so once you have flashed, is there any danger? and I assume that you wouldn't want to do an ota update (not that I would) after flashing this spl? can you flash a stock rom the old fashioned way w/o trouble? (I would imagine yes?)

You would flash one of enom's base roms that are OTA's with root access.

ok that's what I thought. thanks.
Is there anyone out there that uses the Danger SPL with Cyanogen ROM?
If so, ran into any problems? Also, would this be needed for an Eclair CM build?
Seems like every Eclair build requires it.
Only reason why I'm wondering is because I think it would solve some problems on the device. Seeing how I have an added theme to the mix and the file sizes probably differ than what was once stock...

I used cyanogen the other day. The only problem is having more room for everything, but I see that as a plus. It probably would need the Haykuro spl, yes.

Just curious about radios and SPLs

Hello all,
I am just a little curious about the radios and SPLs. I have a rooted MT3G that is a 32B. I have been told i should update these on my phone but i dont understand the reason for it. If you could help me out that would be great. I have been searching for a while and am still lost. Also if i should flash new ones, which are best for a 32B MT3G?
thanks
Just my experience
I've got a UK HTC Magic (32B, same as you) with the stock 0006 SPL and stock radio. I've flashed all sorts of roms, many of which require Danger/Death SPL on the G1 and I've never had any problems. Espresso roms, Eclair roms and (my personal favorite) Super D. All worked fine. Flashing the SPL is the only thing that puts you in any real danger of properly bricking your phone, so if you haven't had any problems flashing the bigger roms out there, I wouldn't (well, I actually haven't) bother about it.
If it ain't broke...
Updating radio and SPL its not a must on MT3G, since they got a larger stock SPL than the G1, so its no really neccesary. I wouldnt recommend to update it, only if you are 100% sure of what you are doing, because it can brick your phone.
Well I know what im doing, I mess with this sort of thing all the time. From PSPs to CMOS on a PC, I'm quite comfortable doing this type of work. I was mainly just curious if it was necessary on the MT3G, or if anything could be gained from it. Thanks guys.
Watch the video tutorials about radios & spl if you're ready to update. It's easy, just have to be precise or you'll brick your device.

And since you have a MT3G 32B then there's no need to update the radio, just the SPL. Wipe, flash SPL, reboot back to recovery, then flash rom. It's that easy.
