g1 turns randomly off, battery? g1 itself? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My g1 recently has been turning off all of a sudden with a full to half full battery.
Today the phone will go up to the "android" screen and when it gets to the desktop it turns off and wont go any further, so the phone is unoperational.
I was wondering if the battery gave up on me or if its an internal problem with the phone...has anyone experienced a problem similar to mine?
hope its just the battery :/
Any ideas/help would be gladly appreciated.

we need more info. what rom, usage, etc

Could possibly be kernal panics, but like the great b man said need more info.

well its the "stock" rom, im running the latest firmware 1.6, and not rooted or anyting of the kind.
any other info you guys might need??
Weirdly my phone turned on and is functioning well ,in the meantime, but im pretty sure it will give out soon.
thanks

haha well you can always call tmobile. they will replace it for ya

Or if you have a friend with a G1 you can switch batteries for a week and see if his/hers starts to have the same problem. If it does tell tmo you did that and they'll send you a new battery instead.

i guess i will try switching out the battery and calling tmo just to get an extra one
if that doesnt work i guess it will be my excuse to try out the cliq!
thanks guys

My phone would have some issues shutting off, but I have two batteries and swap them out often. It turned out that my battery door was a bit too loose, and not holding them in flush, so the connections would come loose. I applied some padding to the inside of the battery door, and now it is perfect. Just something to consider.

Tilt won't stay powered off

First off, I just want to say thanks for anyone who might be able to be of some assistance. I've tried searching google and the forums but haven't had any luck. If I've missed something, please feel free to hit me upside the head with the spoon.
I've recently been having problems with my Tilt regarding charging/battery issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2220715&postcount=37
Here's a quick rundown of my history...
- Can use Active Sync just fine
- When trying to charge, it says charging but won't charge
- No visible damage to the mini usb plug (at least to me)
- Had accident where the usb cable was pulled out from Tilt
Now...
I recently bought a charger that will just charge the battery separately from the phone until I can get it repaired. It's working fine so far except one issue. Whenever I try to power off the device (hold the power button till prompted to turn off), it'll power off then it'll power itself back on after 3 seconds. I did a hard reset to see if that would fix anything but it didn't. The only way to keep the phone off is to take out the battery. But once I put the battery back in, it'll power on by itself. The power button doesn't seem to be sticking or anything but I guess anything is possible. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much!!!
(I'm currently running the stock AT&T Rom without any programs installed. Also, I've never had any other Rom flashed on it.)

There is an option somewhere in power settings that enables/disables the Tilt from charging when connected to a PC. This may be the cause of the first issue.
However, the fact that it won't stay powered off...I have never heard of that before it sounds like a hardware issue. If your Tilt is still covered under warranty I would get it replaced.

Thanks for the reply! I tried adjusting that setting along with any other settings I could find regarding power but all without any luck.
I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue as well, but I guess what I'm really wondering is if any one can make a semi-educated guess as to whether this could be involved with my mini usb plug issue or if the motherboard is just screwed
I'd love to send it in for a replacement but of course my warranty expired 5 days before the problems started

I'm not a hardware guru with HTC, although I have alot of experience troubleshooting PCs and Servers. I would say that it is unlikely that the USB port is what is causing the device to keep turning on.
In any event, are you qualified or ready to try an replace either one yourself (usb port or motherboard)?
There are 3rd party services that will fix the device...but they aren't cheap...it can cost $1-200 bucks or maybe more.
Are you running the Stock ROM/Radio/SPL? Or did you flash anything new?
You may want to revert everything back to defaults and see if the problem persists.

I'm handy with computer hardware and everything but not really with small electronics. I was willing to send it to a repair shop to have the usb plug replaced in hopes of fixing my charging problems but now I'm not sure if it'll be worth it if there's a bigger/more expensive problem.

I'm currently and always have been on the Stock Rom. I bought the phone as a refurb so who knows if someone here had it before me and flashed a bunch of roms . But since I've had it I've kept it running the stock AT&T rom. I also did a hard reset after I noticed the problem but it help anything.

Hmm..yeah...refurb doesn't sit well with me.
At least the problem isn't a crippling one...since you can charge it with a stand-alone charger. As far as not staying off....that's kind of annoying, but I don't generally turn my Tilt completely off. You can always just put all the power saving stuff on to cut down on battery.
So, it seems like something you may have to live with, or pay for repairs. Hopefully someone can offer a better miracle cure than those suggestions...

I was a little weary of buying a refurb at first, but it was actually in great condition and worked just fine until when I accidentally kicked the cable out of it. But thanks for the suggestions. And you're right, it's still very usable, just a bit more of a hassle right now. Hopefully someone out there has something for me.
Exact same problem as dieneverknowing. I am going to try some new batteries and see what happens.

im having the same issue on my old tilt. i took it apart. and still no luck . no visible damage, gonna clean everything and put it back together.
was this problem ever solved. sorry for bumping an old thread. But this is my same issue.
Hey don't worry about bumping an old thread. I meant to do the same when I got my phone fixed.
Turns out it was the sync connector that had damage. I sent it to PPC Techs for this service and it made it like new. I never tried to take it apart, but I could only assume that at some point in time, one of the pins in the connector became separated from the motherboard.
thats what it looks like to me. i have it narrowed down to the board with the usb connector. but not sure yet. How much was that service. i would replace it my self if i can find that part at frys today.
Service was $80, and then you had to pay shipping both ways. I had looked into replacing it myself, but my small electronic skills aren't good enough for me to risk it on a pricy phone. I remember seeing the connector part somewhere online for $40 I believe, but I can't remember where though.
But PPC Techs had it repaired in less then 24 hrs after receiving it. And they did a great job. It feels more solid then when I had originally bought the phone.

Kaiser Powering off when in motion

Would it be an issue with the battery? or the board? rom?
It seems as if the battery looses connection with the phone or something along those lines, it works fine when I don't move it, but if i pick it up and go mobile, it turns off on random movements.
Is this a common problem? I have searched and didn't find any help.
TIA
No this isn't common, can you plug it in and move it around? Lets see what that does. I would think the phone is hozed.

Hozed? As in water damage? I don't remember it getting wet....
At first, when it started acting up, it didn't even want to charge or turn on. I would plug it in, turn it on and it would reset after the "HTC" screen, continuously.
Now I can plug it in no problem, and it charges. Sometimes, it'll tell me that the battery is out of juice after a few hours or charging, but its rare.
I'm also having trouble sync-ing
I sent the phone in to get it checked out and will post what the outcome is.
I really hope its the end of the batteries life, and not the phone
Hozed is an old techie term saying it's broken.
Stick a small bit of card between battery and back case see if that helps
As for the rest of your problems a hard-reset and if it's not just that the battery isn't making full contact a new battery...
Used to have that problem
This issue was mentioned here before.....and stylez suggested to you, I inserted a piece of folded paper between the battery and the phone (opposite to the battery terminals). Never had that problem again.....this was at least 10 months ago....

I had same problem and solved it by just adjusting the battery contacts. Pull them out a little.
Try rubbing the cold contacts of the battery and the phone with a pencil rubber.
It removes any oxydization, and slight corrosion off the contacts, also use the idea of the card to see if that helps!

Not sure why this has posted twice.

I've just used your tip to fix my T-Mobile G1. It was always powering off when it was in my pocket or when I flipped the screen out. T-Mobile said it was a software problem and I should return it - and survive with a crummy 2G loan phone for a couple of weeks while it was "with the engineers". ****ing idiots. So thanks a million!

HTC Hero CDMA Backlight

Has anyone ever had any issues with the backlight on the Hero?
Lately, sometimes, when I turn my phone on or something, it's as if there is no screen at all. It stays black, eventhough I know that the OS is running. I've even tried rebooting, taking out the battery, etc... I can tell it's booting normally because it does the little vibrate, and then vibrates once the OS is fully loaded, etc... cept, when this is occuring, I cannot see anyting on the screen. If I tilt it just right, I can JUST BARELY see the outline of a window or something (whatever is up on the screen at that time). Then after dealing with this issue for a couple of minutes, and rebooting a few times, it works itself out.
I'm thinking I'm starting to have some type of hardware failure, but really don't want that, because I'm due to upgrade to the EVO here in about a month and don't want a stupid replacement just so I can go buy a new phone a month later, ya know? Anyway, wondered if anyone has had the issue before and what, if anything, they may know to do to fix it.
Thanks guys!
Yes I get the same issue off and on. I think it has to do with CM6 and the brightness settings. Not sure though.
For some reason when I flash CM6 it sets the Automatically Adjust Backlight setting to be off. I figured it was just the nature of the rom, so everytime I flash a new one, I go and turn it on in Display settings.

No man, I'm saying, even when I first turn on my phone, I dont even see the white HTC screen. It's completely black, but vibrates like normal when I press the power button to initially turn it on. It's fukd I'm pretty sure. I can't see a thing on it, not even in recovery. It's completely black, but vibrates at the correct times it should vibrate (when I first press power button to turn on, when the rom initially boots up, etc...)
I'm thinking my hero is dead....
I only had a little less than a month to go before I could get an EVO too.... damn phone.
Have you done any damage to it? Sprint might replace it for free.

Nope, I didn't do anything to it... unfortunately, I'm stuck with CM6 installed on it, because I can't see it to be able to switch back to the stock ruu... LoL
so I hope they don't notice and then say, well, too bad, u'r screwed because u rooted u'r phone. But no, my phone is still immaculate except the 'End' key is chipping off (the paint). That's about it
I'm hoping maybe they'll let me just upgrade to the EVO since I'm due in about a month anyway. I doubt it, but even if they give me a replacement (a new one) then I'd be okay with that.
Welp, they ended up replacing my phone with a replacement (refurbed) Hero... I pretty sure this one is 99% new though, not a single problem aesthetically and it seems to be running froyo quite smoothly. It basically feels like a brand new phone (which according to Sprint Reps, there's an 80% chance of getting a new replacement and 20% chance of getting a used replacement). I'm thinking I'm in the 80% range
Very happy thus far... just my touch screen is a little quirky right now b/c I installed a clear screen protector and believe some of the moisture is interfering with touches... which has been getting better as the hours go on. So that's' good!
Thanks guys on the info.... It's just fine for getting me through until Sept. 15th so I can upgrade meself on the EVO!!!!
We shall see if it holds up until then
Take ya'lls and thanks for all the replies
You should get the epic instead. Lol

[Q] Is my phone rooted?

So I dropped it in bleach last night. Quickly grabbed it out and pulled the battery. It was still working so I left it for a bit and blow dried it a bit. So after I'd left it for a bit I turned it back on and it seemed to be working fine but after an hour or so it rebooted and now it bootloops. It starts up when I put the battery in and gets to the kernel splash screen then reboots. I can boot in to download mode but after roughly the same amount of time it reboots as well. Thoughts anyone?
Customer Care
i suggest take it to a customer care .. .
its out of warranty and has a custom rom on it. I disassembled it and put it in rice and am hoping that will get any remaining water out of it if that's the issue..
I recently got a nexus but if I can get it fixed for cheap that'd be cool..

did you mean something like this?

I'm trying to be clever and play on a double meaning here without getting in trouble. What I actually mean is it physically broken beyond repair?
Rice might have done something. Either way the phone booted up and is working.
