Am i being scammed?? - Off-topic

Can anyone please tell me if emails from paypal come from the email address
[email protected]
as i think someone is trying to scam me

I'd say probably. I did a WHOIS on Paypal.com and compared the results to intr-paypal.com, and paypal.com had lots of information available while intr-paypal.com had little to no information, which a scammer would do and a legitimate business wouldn't. I also visited intr-paypal.com, and it's a blank site made with Google Sites. I highly recommend forwarding the emails to [email protected], and reporting the fake site, as detailed here.

Someone must know i'll tell you all the story anyway, i sold somthing to someone overseas for 350gbp, they paid via paypal, paypal sent me an email and said that they have receive the money and are holding on to it until i sent them proof of postage, i did this but am still yet to receive the money ........ earler 2day that person contacted me and wanted to buy somthing else i had for sale on ebay, before i could tell him i already sold it he paid again by the same way, i contacted paypal on the address they were emailing me from as above, they advised me that they could not refund the money as a security precaution to prevent scamming, and me and the buyer need to arrange a method of refund, the buyer wanted me to pay by western union, so i told paypal i would but only if the money was cleared in my paypal account first, paypal replied saying that they will not credit my account until i have shown them proof of the refund,
Is this for real or am i being scammed?
here is the last email paypal sent me
Thanks for the swift response, We regret to inform you that the funds can't be credited to your account until we see a prove of refund, we got an email from the buyer saying that the agreed method is Western Union Money Transfer, so we want you to go ahead and make the refund of £550.00 GBP through western union and then get back to us with the transfer details as requested below .
Sender's Name :
Sender's Address :
MTCN Number (Money Transfer Control Number) :
Security Question & Answer :
Once you make the refund get back to us with the above information and we would release the funds to your account immediately, Also you are advised not to send the Western Union details to the buyer until you're being told to do so, We won't disclose the Western Union information to the buyer until the funds has been successfully transferred to your account, You may ask the buyer's for his address for the Western Union Transfer.

Scam Scam Scam - this is a Scam. (Paypal did NOT send that)
That is so riddled with poor grammar, odd phrases and language you do not expect from a professional organisation. I've seen better grammar from my friends in The Bank of Burkino Fasso and at least he was offering me $90,000,000,000.
That is NOT from Paypal. Speak to Paypal using official links and numbers.
I'd also look at the email "headers" and look for the LAST received from IP number. Then do a Whois search to see it's source. (Nigeria is statistically likely)
Mike

Mike you got in in one mate . . . Nigera lol Im so dumb sumtimes i make myself laff lol

I guess some people need money... And yeah... PayPal wouldn't have such bad grammar.

best place for that email
forward to [email protected]
hope this helps

Please advise with eBay transaction

Chaps some advice please
Sold my xbox 360 for around £320 on ebay
Guy paid via paypal echeque
Took around 10 days to clear and its gone through today.
I emailed the guy and asked why he paid via echeque and not normal instant pay via paypal. In his response he was a little confused as to why it was echeque and came back to me later and found that his card had expired and hence the echeque. He asked me to refund the echeque, and he would repay via proper paypal with his new card details. I told him to leave it as paypal where processing it, he agreed.
Now the problem is that although the cash has cleared, he isnt verified and that means that I am a seller am not protected. What do you suggest? Should I ship the item? I sold something of similar value on ebay previously, and they reversed the transaction because the account had be hijacked. I don’t trust paypal anymore….
Wait with shipping before you are 100% sure you got the money!!
just fyi i bought a prophet battery on ebay, it arrived today. I paid as usual using paypal and only found out after a week that I had paid by e-cheque.
It took about a month arrive so probably the seller decided to wait a bit as well.
I didn't even know what an e-cheque was!

Beware of Paypal
I was involved in a law suit with them 2 years ago. I lost over $1300.00 over 2 years in 2 transactions which there were disputes from credit card co's. and it was 6 months or more after the transactions took place. Paypal would not give me any info on the dispute they just took the money out of my account. I asked for the name of the person and the card number or the contact info with the credit card co. and Paypal said they would dispute it for me and let me know within 90 days and that they couldn't give me info because of privacy issues and to just trust them . Well I trusted them I lost $1300.00 $950 the first time and then $350 this was 5 years ago 3 years ago I was contacted by a law firm that invited me to join a class action suit. Paypal lost the case 9.5 million, my end $24.73 but you know I am happy Paypal had to pay since I only got 25 bucks you can imagine how many people were included in that judgment .We know the Law firm got half but 4.5 million and divided that into payments the size of mine there must have been thousands of people that had the same problem i did. They claim not to be Bank but charge fees as a bank. Because they are not a Bank they are not regulated by the federal government and that make it easy for them to do what they can get away with, whereas a Bank all the T's must be crossed and numbers have to add up. I do not leave money in Paypal I no longer link them with a Real Bank. I use a credit card that has a $300.00 limit to link to Paypal if you like to ebay you almost have to use Paypal unless the Seller has a store and they route u to their credit card service and then your taken a chance.
E-checks
One more thing if Paypal paid with a e-check from your account that means you linked a Checking Account to Paypal when you signed up to paypal and any time you buy something and you do not have enough money in your paypal account to pay for the item. Then Paypal will automatically setup an e-check payment from your bank account. This is dangerous because if someone gets your Id info even though you have no money in your paypal account they can still get access to your linked checking account by making a payment to someone via Paypal, Paypal will simply turn it into a e-check and start the process of withdrawing the funds from you bank account. Be careful !
many thanks for the info guys.
i'll wait until the funds clear into my bank account and then ship it out
cheers

Bought a phone on eBay, still havn't received it... (need advice)

Payment was completed on August 30, shipping label was apparently printed on September 10 (according to tracking number) and I still havn't received it.
This is the item, I live in Quebec, Canada. My tracking number says this:
Label/Receipt Number: CV00 5036 863U S
Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on September 10, 2008 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

It has been 26 working days since the payment was completed and 17 since the shipping label was printed. Should I mark it as not received or should I wait?
After 2 weeks you can file a dispute with PayPal, I'd do that if I were you. Contact the seller and let him know, give him a chance to get it to you within a reasonable amount of time from now, and if he does mark the dispute as resolved. A month is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for an item, I would've filed a complaint a long time ago.
how did you pay for the item? credit card, bank card..
I paid with PayPal and just filed a dispute. Thankfully he told me he would cooperate.

Perfect, once you get the item just mark the dispute with PayPal as "resolved" and it won't go against either of you. I like doing this instead of just contacting (especially after an entire month) because it gives a little nudge that lets him know you really want your item.

I never sell on ebay, because I am scared I will forget to post stuff out and end up in ****. Normal letters take 3-4 weeks for me to post, important ones 1-2, birthday cards just don't get sent

LOL mysteriously you will get your shipment...5 bucks says there will be something wrong with it.
Check your tracking number now, does it say shipped or still electronic shipping info received? If it still doesn't say shipped, but he's claiming it has been shipped, call PayPal and tell them what's up. The number is 1-888-221-1161, but you have to go to paypal.com and click "contact us", then "by phone" to get a special PIN to use.
Edit: Just checked it myself, still says electronic shipping info received. This means he has not yet delivered the package to USPS, just printed out a shipping label through PayPal.

Yeah, stuff like that happens... But if you go through with the dispute and give him bad feedback, that's the best you can do.

Conversation with a Nigerian scammer

So I have my Macbook on my local Craigslist, a buy/sell/trade site here in the States. This site has been plagued with an influx of fake people with fake money sending around fake PayPal emails.
Unfortunately, I'm all to familiar with these scams, which all seem to originate from Nigeria. Here's my most recent exchange:
I am interested in this item,is it still available for sale?get back

I bolded the suspicious lines, as these are the "red flags" that I look for (for good reason). Notice the HORRIBLE grammar and spelling. PayPal is a professional company, and they take great care to promote that image. As far as I know, all their emails are computer-generated.
So here's my response to "Richie Mo":
Nice try! It's a shame that you're a scammer, because it's a really nice computer. Those paypal emails are fake, I know for a fact. I am not new to craigslist at all, and I've turned down better fakes than you on the daily. Thank you for giving me a good laugh though!

I've been around the block a few times. I've had similar attempts on several different items in the past. One was a man offering more than asked plus $100 for shipping, but to his "daughter in west africa as a missionary". The sale was for a Behringer mixer for DJ-ing.
I hope that I have enlightened you all to the warnings and red flags to look for so this doesn't happen to you.

Same here, its good to show people it still happens.. Just a shame alot of people do fall for it..
I ALWAYS get those emails every time I post an Ad on Craigslist. I know its a scammer because they always refer to what your selling as an "item" not with "Hey do you still have the evo? Will you take $50 for it?" like the typical low ballers.
Such a shame. What I wouldn't give to meet a scammer like that and make them cry. My brother-in-law was a spammer, but that's more respectful.
hmm..
<sarcasm>I would have done the following (knowing it was a scam...)
I think it may be legal to send bodily fluids and feaces as long as it is packaged in such a way that odours are not emmited, and it doesn't leak.
Get a macbook box, just for fun, use it as my toilet for a day, package it all up properly of course. And send it to that address. Be interesting to see what happens when they did get the USPS tracking number </sarcasm>
I don't like scammers....
I'm fairly certain that isn't legal. I was planning on sending an empty box with too little postage and no return address, forcing "Richie" to foot the bill.
(I know it isn't but I guess sarcasm does not carry over the internet to well!)
Its a shame google maps doesn't have much coverage on Nigeria, could pop a nice little map marker on for all to see that scammer lives here.... That would be an interesting layer.

Shipping phone within US and PayPal

i posted my phone for sale on Craigslist. now i only deal with people locally and for cash, but someone had contacted me asking if i would ship to Louisiana.
now i've seen my fair share of scams. i've only texted with him/her so far and obviously having to ship and pay via PayPal were big red flags. otherwise, no broken English, no request to ship outside the continental US, etc.
IF (a BIG if) i decide to go through with this, here's a checklist:
confirm payment has been added to my account via logging in and/or calling PayPal to verify
ONLY ship to confirmed address listed on buyers PayPal account
opt for shipping insurance, delivery confirmation and signature verification (PayPal rep told me to do this to ensure I have paperwork in case a charge back occurs)
what do you think? i'm still strongly against shipping and will probably stick to my initial reaction...
I wouldn't do it.... But I'm a paranoid scaredy cat.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
If uncertain, wait till the money has moved from PayPal to your bank account before sending. I usually stipulate that on my eBay auctions and no-one's ever complained.

thanks everyone.
as soon as i told buyer i'm only shipping to confirmed address on his/her PayPal account, they stopped responding to me.
What does the first email you go look like? (Protip: post the email here)
This way I can tell you if its a scam after posting dozens of ads on CL.
when I get those types of emails or text, I tell them either pay by western union or take your **** else where.....

Will Sprint HTC One work in Nigeria?

*NOTE: This can be deleted, because I was being a moron. All I had to do was log into my PayPal account and see the funds weren't there, or even pending, and I knew immediately someone was trying to scam me. Should have known sooner, though.
So, I "sold" my HTC One on Craigslist, and the person who bought it apparently wants me to ship it to Nigeria where her son is sttending school; it's for his birthday. She gave me 60 bucks more than I was asking via PayPal, which she stated was for shipping. Aside from not knowing whether the Sprint variant will even work over there (does anyone know?), I can't help but feel uneasy about this whole thing. I guess as long as the funds clear I'm safe, and am under no obligation to (unlike with eBay), to right any wrongs she might point out later down the line. Should I just take the money send the phone and run, or is there something I'm not seeing that could cause legitimate problems?
Oh man that's a big no no. Doing business with people on craigslist who want to pay you through PayPal and Western Union plus wanting you to send it to another country which always seems to be in Africa is almost always a scam. If you read the craiglist faq you might get more info on what they do.
Edit: Glad you caught it
Mwahaha, I remember having one of these for a listing on my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Businessman in Nigeria for his son's birthday. Were it not for the bad English, they actually had a reasonably convincing-looking PayPal e-mail notification (which failed Google's trusted vendor mail check, sure, but it was good nevertheless).

Actually, the PayPal thing was my idea. It was my way to get a higher dollar amount for the phone, kind of like what some gas stations do with credit-based sales. In my case I asked $425 cash or $450 via PayPal. Maybe I should stick with cash and local sales, though.
And this scammer was the same deal, Rirere, except it was a woman sending to her son. I Googled the mailing address faux PayPal sent me and found other people who had also almost been ripped off.
It's a good idea to always deal in cash, locally, and meet at a sprint store. Unless you are selling on ebay, doing it this way will cover both seller and buyer.
