If you use Cyan's recovery on both G1's, you can do that by making a Nandroid back up, taking it off the first G1's SD card and put it on the other one. But make sure EVERYTHING is the same beforehand, such as same apps installed, Apps2SD, etc. Settings, configurations, layouts, ROM type will be restored with the transfer.
Any questions, let me know :]
thanx. but, when u say "make sure everything is the same beforehand", what does that mean? i'm thinking about buying a white g1, get a nandroid backup copy of my current black g1, and restore on the new white g1. does that work? i guess what i wanna know is whether a nandroid backup will be extracted and restored on another g1 and make it a clone of the original one.
if it's possible, do i need to format the new sd with ext2 beforehand?
You don't need to format your ext2 because nandroid doesn't back that up. I think that luke means that you should have the gmail accounts the same and other stock data that you have to input.
i'm using jf 1.51 with cyanogenmod, which is supposed to format the new sd with ext2
my question is: can i just put a copy of my nandroid backup on the new sd, put it in the new phone and restore it so the new phone will be a clone of the current one? (of course, using the same gmail account)

Yes but the new phone must have root And the same radio, spl, etc..
Just set the new G1 up the same. The same way and you should have no problems.

Gmail accounts don't necessarily have to be the same (although I could be wrong, I think nandroid automatically includes the Gmail with all the sync info), but the most important is to just have all your apps the same. Reason being, when you pull the nandroid backup onto the new phone and install, it'll be looking for apps that aren't there anymore and cause massive anarchy.
Make sure all your core root features are the same as well, same radio, same SPL, same recovery, etc. That's key too and may brick a phone if you don't have that set up right.
Otherwise, it should work splendidly :]
i see. so basically, i have to root the new phone first.right?
1. root the new phone.
2. install the same radio, SPL, and ROM you have on the old phone on the new one.
3. install cyanogen's recovery image on the new phone.
4. nandroid backup your old phone.
5. put your old sd card in your new phone.
6. nandroid restore your new phone.
after that, its just a matter of setting up apps2sd and transferring the contents of your old SD card to your new one. however, keep in mind that only the phone with your sim card in it will work. afaik, you cant dupe sim cards and you cant register two to the same phone line.

Yup, you'll have to root both phones and makes sure they're set up the same with the same radio and SPL. (ROM isn't necessary, as that will be transferred with the Nandroid backup).
You can check Radio/SPL by holding the camera button when starting up your phone. You can also do this by looking in Settings>About Phone and scrolling to the bottom.
Let me know how it goes!
Which option should I select? I have the following:
- Nand Backup
- Nand + Ext Backup
- BART backup
I don't plan on doing alot of hacking (launchers, themes, minor things) but if I mess something up I want to be able to make a backup and restore; hopefully as if nothing happened. That said, it wouldn't do me much good unless I knew the backup I made was going to enable me for the right restore. I'm running the newest version of Amon-RA. Green typeface, Nexus Logo (Dunno if that makes a difference). Messed up my phone pretty bad yesterday and although I was able to fix it, I don't wanna repeat that mistake.
I've always done Nand+Ext backup. Never has failed me
what is the +ext and the bart option? anybody that can ecplain the difference with the nand backup?
EXT is if you have a linux EXT partition for APPS2SD and want that backed up too.
thanks, and what does bart mean then? I just saw the new 1.7.0 from ra and saw the last two were replaced by google system files. any link with that?
Before flashing a new rom, what are the advantages/disadvantages of the Bart or Nandroid backups?
Do I do one or the other or both?
Nandroid when I last used it (and it was a while ago, so it may have changed) only backed up the rom, and not other stuff like aplications on an ext2/3/4 patition (A2SD) so you would lose app's
BART backs up the whole lot.
Nandroid now supports backup of ext as well. So they both do pretty much the same job. I prefer the switchrom script just because it allows you to name the backups. Makes it alot easier than trying to guess what rom I had installed on a specific date.
bart allows naming from the console (its the way I use it)
It also allows compressing the backup, its one of the things I started doing when I first switched from switchrom, but dont do it anymore, way to slow to compress and uncompress on a G1
So I switch between multiple roms every few days...would i be able to store a few backups on my sd and just flash between them whenever i feel like it? i use the same partition for all of them so re-partitioning seems a little redundant
advice? thank youuuu
Yes they store on your sd card but they're listed by date and time backed in a format similar to 525101345 so 5-25-10 at 13:45
You could defiantly do it but would need to remember what is what.
can i just rename them or would that screw it up somehow?
i wouldnt recommend it
that's why I use bart - the name is always defaultrom. Once I bart something, I'll go in and rename it to something more descriptive. Then if I need it, I just rename it defaultrom and boom... back in business.
It's more of a pain, but I think bart is more stable and it feels more comprehensive than nandroid + ext.
Or use the switchrom script which is available at the commandline on most roms. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541183

I rename nandroids all the time and have never had a problem
Does anyone know if we can use nandroid backup or something similar on our Vogues? I have been doing a lot of flashing lately, trying out different ROMs and have been using Titanium Backup to more easily reinstall my apps after a flash, but the process is still somewhat tedious. I could definitely see the benefit of a full nand backup. Or is there another way to get back up and running faster?
I have tried doing some searching and have not had much success.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Bump... I would like to know as well.
The easiest way to figure it out is to try it.
If you want a full nand backup than you should use the "backup /data" option in the install menu. If you want certain things backed up, I've read that mybackup is good, although whenever I try to backup things like homescreen and settings, it doesnt restore properly. For apps I just use astro.
The problem with doing an entire backup of /data is that sometimes when you install a new system and try to use the old data you might have issues.
