Now i know once you unlock your bootloader it shows a small lock of the splack screen, correct??
Well how in depth does HTC really go into figuring out if you have rooted the phone or not for, lets say, a repair?
Because i also know that they "say" they will wave the voided warrenty for a dust problem but I've also seen problems with them failing to go through with that.
So could we theoretically just change the splash screen (or boot 2 i think it is) to the original splash screen without the lock and maybe slip by HTC's warranty?
Now if this seems illegal or something I'm terribly sorry, i just want to have a way for people who rooted to get the "full" experience to have a fall back if we dont figure out how to re-lock, or if they just simply damage the phone.
They have the power to bring a bricked phone back from the dead, how far do you think they can go?
Yes, but...
Yes, i know they could really do anything they want. (even replace the phone) But how far do they WANT to go...Do you see?
I mean why would they waste their time trying to see if your rooted or not, unless they check EVERY single phone no matter what...
Every phone gets checked. All they have to do is plug it in to their test beds, which they do to every phone. They also check every phone for water damage, and not just the white dot in the battery bay, they have others hidden throughout the phone.
The SPL won't let you flash the splash over it
Alrighty
Okay, thats all i wanted to know. I just thought maybe they didnt check every phone, maybe they used a different computer or something to check for root and they just used a simple technique for a damage check.
I do know that we cant flash the splach but im sure it will be soon to come, and by that time i'm sure we will be able to relock anyways...

Maybe... what we need is someone to leak a signed .nbh of the SPL. That is the golden ticket to being able to re-lock.
It even says unlocked in the bootloader.

There's a white dot on the battery bay? You actually got me curious, as installing my full body skin i did get my phone quite wet. I can't find this white dot that you are talking about.
I had to send my phone recently for a repair and it was rooted. They not only accepted it, they sent me a brand new nexus within the week. I don't think they have time to check out each and every phone for something that trivial. This isn't Apple!

very nice! -congrats!
All they have to do is power on the phone and they can see if the bootloader is unlocked. That's all they need to void the warranty. Fortunately for you guys, they haven't started following through with that... yet.
I had an idea but dont know if it will work... change the boot animation/screen to a white(the lock icon color) screen, the lock will not be visible because its also white. The tech ppl will think its part of the malfunction...
hmmmm
I think you're thinking the same thing as me sort of, as I stated befor maybe when we figure out how to change the splash screen we could replace it with one without the lock icon.

I wonder if simply changing that would be enough to "fool" HTC. If so then that would be quite sad.. sad as in pathetic. I would assume they would run more extensive test.

They could even go as far as pressing the trackball down when turning it on. and seeing *** UNLOCKED *** in small, friendly letters inside the bootloader menu.
Oh nice liam, I didn't know that.. I don't even have a Nexus so obviously I wouldnt. Kinda embarassing.. I was being so radical to be responded to with a simple answer.

I just bought it...out of sheer curiosity. It doesn't appear to be branded, but I don't think its an ADP.

Is his explanation accurate?
***Updated on Page 3 with PICS***
probably custom painted it like colorware, called it a rare special edition to squeeze $225 out of a used G1.
I doubt one for "google employees only" would come in a T-Mobile box... not sure if it is a ADP, since the graphics don't look the same... at least I have never seen it with the vertical lines like that, and just did a good amount of searching about 2 weeks ago when I bought my G1.
Price wise, you got a good deal if it is a 9.5/10 I have seen near perfect condition phones G1's go for $250+ not including shipping. Seen some real crap condition ones go for just over $200...
Yea. It was only posted for a couple of hours before I snagged it. I felt like regardless if the Special Edition is BS, I got a good deal.
Its always cool to have a one of a kind phone too, I loved my clear housing razr back in the day. As far as I know I was the only one in the world to have one. I also had a deep blue housing sidekick 3, it was pretty sharp too.
Looks like a regular G1 with an etched battery cover (or possibly just decaled).

Thats all it is. Juphro does it for people right here on the XDA forums for $27 USD and any design you want on any of the main battery door colors. I have one that matches my avatar.
Don't they all have those glossy bits? Both of mine have.. Its just a custom battery cover as far as I can see.
Its not etched...Its painted (at the very most). It also is Unbranded...
Look above the speaker...there is no T-Mobile logo. So I can confidently say its not just a regular G1...
From what I understand (after research) is that this is the phone that HTC/Google/Tmo employees were given as "demo" phones before the actual
G1 was dropped. Basically one to show off to would be consumers.
Is it in your possession yet?
I'd be interested to know the hboot info if it's pre-g1.. might be something we've not come accross before.

No. It shipped this morning from Cali (im in Arkansas).
It was shipped Priority so, I SHOULD have it by Saturday.
I'm not sure what the term hboot is (im still relatively new at modding)
EDIT: Hboot is like the PVT Board? The SPL correct?
If so, the wording in the auction sounded like he had it rooted, and put it back to stock. If it wasn't a SPL we are familiar with, wouldn't he have to flash the normal stock SPL? Again, if this is a n00b comment, im sorry. My last phone was an ADP1, and I only messed the SPL/Radio ONCE...
could also be a replacement shell, as the one I ordered came with a glossy keyboard bezel and was unbranded in the speaker area.

No...I thinks its a legitimately rare phone. I did some research on it. I think everything is stock on it, and they just released them as demo phones.
The only T-mobile branding I see in those pics is on the manuals...

Yea, hboot=fastboot=spl depending on who you're talking to and what mood they're in
It'll be a shame if he has rooted it previously because that'll mean any unique firmware on it would be long gone, but on re-reading the auction I think you're probably right.

Yea..Sucks! Oh well..Im curious to see if it is unlocked like an ADP.
Look at the user manuals.
By the way, I can definitively tell you that its not one of the G1s that TMO employees got before the official release for testing. I have one from when I worked for TMO. They look exactly the same as the regular G1. Also, toothpaste or very very light sanding can remove the TMO branding from the front casing without leaving a mark.
Well...as stated before, regardless of whether or not it is, in fact, a "Special Edition", $225 for a G1 that is in good shape is still a decent buy.
I was watching them go $225-250 all night long.
Once I get the phone, I will check the model/serial # etc, and see what I can find out (if anything)
Is that a google "holiday" phone?
It is definitely NOT tmobile in any way.
The stock bootloader on a holiday phone *looks* in every way like a G1 bootloader, but HAS FASTBOOT. In other words, it is exactly the same as the engineering bootloader for ADP1, but has the rainbow stripes instead of the skating androids.
Take a look here. Note the picture of the build number... "holiday_devphone".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485676
Regarding the back cover... could be custom. Might be normal for a holiday phone -- I've never actually seen one.
Also could be a bone stock ADP1 with a custom back cover. The rest of the "look" matches it perfectly.
Note: if the previous owner has changed any software, then there is no way to tell except to track it down by serial number -- and it doesn't make ANY difference. A DREAM is a DREAM. They're all the same.
Also FYI: The box and manual that say "G1" are NOT for that phone.
Oh, and just a minor point...
He says that he put it "back to factory settings". Sounds to me like he messed with it. Probably loaded some tmobile crap onto it in place of the stock ROOT image. Hopefully it has the stock bootloader -- in which case you can just fastboot anything you like. Be sure to try that BEFORE you go RC29'ing it. Remember that regardless of rainbow screen and bootloader version code, it *probably* has a fully functional fastboot.
Also note: "back to factory settings" may also just mean that he wiped the userdata, so boot it up and check the build screen. If it says "holiday_devphone", then you can adb shell root, nothing weird required.

So, I have a question (coming from an ADP1). What would happen if I tried to flash a ROM to the phone and it is a basic stock phone? Will it even allow me to do anything.
So, I guess the question is, how can I tell when I get it what I can and cant do with it. I know this sounds way n00bish...but since I had an ADP1 before, I didn't even have to think about this.
ok so these days... i been using RA. alot probably flashing 30 times a day
because of the wifi problem.
the trackball decided to stop working
when i scroll it up it wont work.
scrolling down , left, right works.
(my phone is unlocked) <- i know it avoids the warranty.
so..i decided to take chance and call HTC about warranty
this is what im gonna tell them
that my wifi isnt working
and i didnt find it out till now cause i never used wifi, and used 3G. and recently i canceled my plan and i dont have data plan anymore
so when i tried to use wifi it didntt work , and tell them i already did hard reset and soft reset and even called my router's company and changed the setting of the router and they told me that it has to be the hardware problem of my phone
So, this is my plan
1, call HTC
2, tell them wifi isnt working and its a hardware problem
i have that strange screen touch issuse too when i hold the phone tightly and try to touch the screen it doenst work, and it thinks im touching the bottom of the screen so it goes into menu and dialer when im clicking the middle of the screen, or vibrate cause it thinks im clicking the capacitive button.
3. i'll demand a replacement, and when i send my phone back hopefully it will cover by warranty( i know unlocking the phone avoids the warranty but i know many people have succeded getting replacement eventhough their phone was unlocked)
4. when they receive mine and it turns out its not covered by warranty are they going to charge my 500 dollar.
or find out that my trackball is broke.
what things do that ask? when i call them ? did anyone go through the process? do they require credit card number and all?
bought my phone through craigs about 3 weeks ago i think
lost the number of the seller..( that son of [email protected]#@# told me everything was working when i got it the wifi wasnt working)
EDIT: should i just complain about the screen?
i doubt they're gonna test the wifi and all.
does anyone knows how they inspect their device?
in what awy do i have higher chance getting replacement without issue.
Complain about the screen not working properly which is hardware issue
complain about the wifi <--- could b cause of rooting and messing up idk..
well..i already googled it and trackball isnt covered by warranty..
i have AMOLED screen but..dont really care about if i get SLCD or not..
so just your trackball doesnt work?
just flash everything back to stock recovery partition and all, then call them and say your trackball stopped working

It wont be a problem. I had trackball problems too and got a replacement by the end of the week. They don't care about your bootloader. Try it. It's as painless as possible. Stop worrying.

update #2 nov-30 2010
got my replacement from HTC it looks like they sent me a brand new spanking phone
no dusts under the screen, no scratches what so ever, everything works perfectly
, and it looks have it has new parts(which means SLCD)
my old nexus one had dark grey-ish trackball and this one have white-ish light trackball. it looks like the notification light is brighter.
is going to send my old nexus one tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
hopefully they wont charge me.
will update soon
So they send you the replacement first? When u send ur old one do they fix it or do u keep the replacement. The vibrate on mine is screwed up so im thinking of sending it also

When u call them, you have 2 choices, you can either do swap or do repair
in my case i did swap. they will require your credit card number
and you will have $530, pending on your credit card, you have to send it back your old n1 if you want the charge to be dropped
or you can just send your n1,which will take longer..
Rather than creating another thread for a similar issue...I am having issues with my power button. Sometimes it takes about 5 tries to get the screen to come on.
My question is, are they swapping with N1's or does the AT&T version get something else? I have heard about someone receiving a Captivate instead and I do not want a branded / locked phone.

Looks like my HTC One is bricked.
What pisses me off is I didnt do modify anything except S-OFF couple of weeks ago before the 4.2.2 update.
All stock.
Was about to turn off my AC with the One, and it just would turn on.
Charging light is off, connecting it to PC shows its identified as QHSUSB_DLOAD.
Seems like it's qualcomm download mode. No ADB no Fastboot, no nothing.
No idea what happened to it.
QPST software detects it is in Qualcomm download mode, and probably allows flashing a new boot image and phone image. Any idea how to push the boot image to the phone using QPST?
Thanks,

Well indeed a dead emmc chip there is nothing I can do. Also, I did not unlock the bootloader and it's not tampered, so I suppose they should also cover it. The only thing is I bought it off Amazon France, and live in Israel, so the warranty procedure will be a pain in the a**.
If you can't turn it on neither can HTC...
Warranty should be fine. If it broke after running OK without you doing anything it's most likely emmc
I assume you have tried

The bright light trick works, something to do with the sensors. Worth a shot anyways.
Also, if you bought from Amazon, why not just return it to them as defective and get a full refund? They have a great return policy, and you won't have to worry about HTC warranty at all. Just a thought.

That's from the US site. Sounds like the window is 30 days for most items, but I think I read that for electronics, it's 90 days. It says you can go to your order and click on returns and it will give you the status. Also, says even after 30 days for normal items, they will refund 80%. Worth checking out anyways. Good luck to you....

Well, lucky you suggested that. First I found out the phone im using was from Amazon.de and not Amazon.fr (I ordered from both, kept the first to arrive and sold the second). Amazon.de seems to have a much better return policy and I can still probably return it if I understand correctly with my poor German and Google Translate.
The only bummer is that I wont get back the taxes paid (We have 35% tax on cellphones). But if I have a problem with HTC warranty (Although probably shouldnt have), I'll just return it to Amazon.

Sounds like a good plan. Glad I could help a little!
After about a month of being rooted I decided to flash a custom rom, so I flash twrp then my custom rom which happened to be the wrong one because it was a bacon rom and I have a shamu phone so the flash didnt work (wish instructions would have made that more clear.) So after the first fail I flashed the CM12 updater zip thinking that would help but it didnt. So I go to restore my backup image, it was successful! After a successful restore I hit reboot to reboot my phone and from their it never came back up. My phone is dead as can be, no signs of life not a light or anything comes on. If their anything I can do or am I doomed. I do have insurance so I can get another phone, thats after a $200 deposit of course
With the phone off, what happens if you press and HOLD the lower volume key and the power button?

download any rom via your computer, and gapps. then boot into your recovery and adb push them to your phone. be sure its a nexus 6 rom, as thats all a nexus 6 can flash. or, boot into your bootloader and flash the factory img via fastboot.
generally, you shouldnt mod your phone until you learn all the basics about modding your phone.

nothing at all?
try plugging it in. let it sit for a minute. then press the power button, and keep pressing it for 20-30 seconds. then let go and press it normally. if nothing, then its dead
maybe the battery died?

its possible.
This happened to me. As hard as it was, I plugged it in and went to sleep. In the morning I could boot into bootloader, and I flashed stock firmware. I had to flash each file separately, as the flash-all file wouldn't work.
Sent from my Nexus 6
Thanks for the suggestions guys but I think my phone is dead to the water, had it on the charger for 6hrs and still nothing. Well its back to my tried and true Note 2 til I can afford $200 for a new phone :crying:
Why would you go through insurance when you have manufacturer warranty?... Unless you bought it second hand
Bought it through ATT Next Plan, does the manufacturer warranty still hold up?

So, what you are saying, is that he/she should commit insurance fraud? Man, look if you don't know what you are doing and brick/destroy your phone that is on you. Pay the money for a new one and learn your lesson. All you are doing is making RMA processes more and more difficult because of cheats like you. OP is to blame here if he/she flashed a ROM made for a different phone, that's on them not the MFG, Motorola.

absolutely disagree with you.
manufacturers must make phones that will not be so easy breakable.
thanks for sharing your problem,
now again I'm confirmed that CM is sucks as always it was and should not even try it.

He is right. People understand that you void your warranty when you flash your device. XDA doesnt condone fraud in any way shape or form. If you brick your device because you were messing with it then you accept it and buy a new one. Why do you think just about every rom thread tells you that you have now voided your warranty. Flashing your device is not something that should be taken lightly or done because it is cool.
so?

So is OK for them to sell phones to us that are defective? Anyway my phone had the
Screen burning and also the
Pink color issue when you lower the brightness I didn't fell like returning it because I had
Already set everything up the way I like it . so just like us they also have to face
The consequences which they do pretty good for me and should do for everyone we are
Taking about a 700 hundred dollars phone here not a 100 dollars phone ,I would like to see.
Those who are taking crap saying to buy another phone if they were in my shoes
I'm pretty sure they would have done the same so stop with that bs . return that phone get your new one end of story thanks.
