About flashing ROMS - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi lads,
here some noob question from a happy nexus one user:
I flashed Cyanogen 5.0.5 yesterday, together with the Radio (i lost 2 kilos during radio flashing hehe), great rom, fast and cool.
I flashed again today, since an update has just been released (Cyanogen 5.0.5.1).
My noob question are:
What does the Amon Ra recovery wipe do?
Should i wipe before going from 5.0.5 to 5.0.5.1 (or in general when updating a rom)?
I had a look inside Cyanogen 5.0.5.1 update.zip, and i realized there's a boot.img file,
is it a bootloader? Does that mean that i just flashed the SPL or the bootloader(taking a chance to brick!!??)
Thank you very much!!!

2. Generally you don't have to wipe when going to a new version of the same rom. Check OP first post in thread to find out if it requires a wipe or not.
3. No its not a bootloader, no chance of brick. Only way you can brick your phone is flashing a radio or SPL.

Thanks for the answer!!!
Another question arise though...What's that boot.img file inside the Cyanogen update.zip???
And also, is there any clear architecture doc to realize how nexus one boots and which modules are involved and in which order? (like bootloader-->SPL-->Radio-->Kernel)
Love this forum!!!

Hey all!
i have some questions to this app:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.zenthought.flashrec
http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
1. does it works on T-Mobile D G1 with any FW? or also only with RC29 or RC7?
2. is flashing "HardSPL" or "DangerSPL" a musthave or can i use the original SPL (iam scarry to flah SPL)?
3. when i restore the backup do i have the full original t-mobile D delivery version of my G1?
4. how i restore the original recovery.img
5. if needed, how do i restore the original SPL
6. do i need to flash the Radio manual or do the apk make this
7. is this the right order?
- download apk
- install apk
- download CyanogenMod v4.0.1
- save as update.zip on SD root
- execute apk
- create backup
- flash Cyanogen recovery 1.4
- reboot into the new
- flash CyanogenMod v4.0.1
- Wipe
- boot G1
- download new Radio
- copy Radio as Radio.zip to SD root
- update Radio via Cyanogen recovery 1.4
- done
- boot G1 (now i have a rooted G1 with CyanogenMod v4.0.1)
please correct me if the is anything wrong or if i missed any step!!

As a N00b you should at least read the Sticky posts, like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=528334 this one...
It's called:
"Don't Start A New Thread - Dream Questions & Answers Here!"
All questions should be posted in the Q&A Section. I'm not too familiar with the 1-click rooting since it's been out for less than 72hrs so from what I've heard the 1-click root flashes cyan's recovery for you so all you have to do is this:
-Download and flash newest radio
-Download and flash Hard SPL
-Wipe
-Download and flash CM v4.0.1
If you do it in this order I'm 99.99999% sure you won't brick your phone, but once again please post all future question in the Q&A section

Yes, this app worked perfectly for me ( cuz I dun wanna waste my time doing all the porcess of pulling the firmware back to RC29 ). If u have the latest radio, then just execute the .apk, turn off your phone right after doing all the required process from that app ( back up current img then Flash the 1.4 img from Cyanogen I remember ), then go into recovery mode and you have the newest recovery img. (Remember to put the CyanogenModv4.0.1 to your SD first). Then Wipe and Flash the update, and you're done
and it works without flashing SPL????

hard spl will not brick your phone. it is needed to flash roms from other regions than yours. hard spl is a good thing to have. also with it you can flash nandroid back ups and you can change your splash screen to further personalize your dream. enough said... go download it. flash it. if you have to wipe, then wipe. if you don't like wiping then you should not have rooted in the first place.
but to use this tool have id need to flash the SPL or works it with the original SPL too? in the manual and one the youtube video- there is no info about a need to flash the SPL.
all i want to know is:
can i just install this app, flash the new radio, run the backup, flash recovery, flash CFW, and iam done or not
yes you can do that. afterwards i would recommend flashing the hard spl.
you do not have to flash it, but it would be a good thing.

thanks, should i flash the radio befor i try to root my G1 with the 1-click rooting? or after i flashed the custom FW?
I used the "1-click root"
I followed all the steps and my phone is working fine, but how can you tell if its rooted?
Also, if it is rooted and I wanted to install the most current cyanogen ROM, do I have to install the new radio and SPL files?
Thanks in adv for putting up with my N00Bness.
what build do you have now? rc33? i would first update the radio. i would not mess with the newer spl as it has been known to brick phones. also did you install cynogen's recovery image? turn phone off then hold power button and home key when you turn it on to put you back into recovery image. it should say cynogen recovery 1.4 on top. it will have a number of options on the bottom nandroid backup, restore nandroid etc. if that cynogen"s recovery image is on the phone its rooted. after you flash the latest radio, i would flash jf 1.51 build then cynogens latest build. i heard the going to cynogens latest build will cause a bootloop if your not coming from another modded build.

To tell if the phone is rooted, download terminal emulator from the market and type su at the prompt. If the phone is rooted, the prompt should go from a $ to a #. If not, you will get a permission denied error message. If that is the case, probably go the old fashion way of rooting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
As far as the SPL and radio, you don't need the danger SPL (haykuro's) but you will need to engineering SPL or hard SPL to install custom ROMs. As far as the radio, you want to latest radio to improve calls, bluetooth, etc.
hi im also new..
i did the 1 click root too. i did the back up, then flashed the 1.4. then the nandroid backup, then wiped the data, then flashed cyanogens 4.0.1. so im pretty sure im rooted.. and everything works too! except myfaves and the native im app.
but whats this about the radio? do i have to update that? i havent messed with the radio at all.. what are the dangers in this? if any?
and i haave no clue what the hell spl is lol

?'s before i root

I am about to root my phone for the first time. I notice on this thread here that under "Install CyanogenMOD 4.0.1 (Stable)" section it says to install the CyanogenMOD 4.0.1. (stupid question) Can I install the new version the CyanogenMOD v4.0.4 found on this thread instead of the 4.0.1?
Second question.
Back on this Thread here again under the "Flash the New RADIO and SPL" section it states in nice red letters "NOTE: Please read carefully before flashing! This could BRICK your phone!!!". Do i have to install the New Radio and SPL in order to have the full root and features with the said ROM? I really don't want to brick my phone if i can avoid it.

you can flash 4.0.4, that was just the stable build at the time of the threads creation. you do not have to install the new spl to run cyanogen's roms. the new spl is for running hero and other htc based builds. most likely you already have the new radio if you are on cupcake(1.5). any other questions?

if you root by downgrading to rc-29 then you will have to reflash the newest radio bc the DREAIMG.nbh overwrites the radio

Hi xghost. You dont have to update radio to flash desire roms.
You can update it if you want to but remember, flashing the radio is the "only" way to brick your phone. Not a high chance but higher then most other things you can do.

okay thanks...so since it is my first time using the root for nexus one...im going to flash it with 5.0.4.1 do i flash it then flash the ere38 add on that is on the page or???

[Q] How to flash CM 5.0.8 to froyo?

Hi, i recently flashed my Rogers Post 911 updated Dream/G1 to CyanogenMod's 5.0.8 and then i tried to flash the new android 2.2(froyo) but it always get stuck on the ROGERS logo after flashing. What am i doing wrong?
Phone:
G1/Dream
Rogers Post 911 update
32B
3.22.26.17
upgraded from 1.6 to 2.1(CM 5.0.8)
How i tried to flash to Android 2.2:
-boot into Recovery(home+power)
-wipe (all 5 wipes)
-partitioned SD card (32/512/rest)
-flash from zip
i tried these roms(from The Rom Bible) with no success (stuck at ROGERS screen after flashing and reboot):
-SpeedTeam Froyo
-SuperFroyo
i really want Superatmel's rom since ill be able to use Supsetup V6 which looks awesome since it can control swap and a whole bunch of other stuff. SuperUser on CM's rom doesnt do anything the App list is empty too.
anyone?? is it b/c i forgot to do a 'fastboot wipe system -w' thing?
By the 3.x radio version you are using you need to make sure the ROM is EBI1 compatible, or has an EBI1 kernel available you can flash after the ROM.
when i installed cm5.0.8 i flashed the bc-5.0.8-ebi1-signed.zip after the ROM.
if i flash the bc-6.00-ebi1.zip after flashing any of the CM6.00 or superfroyo fastfroyo ROMs, would it work??

Most kernels will only work on the specific mod they were intended for, in this case CM6. Since the other ones are based off that one it might work, but I wouldn't count on it. Try it with CM6 first and make sure that works then experiment. Just remember you have to re-flash the kernel after every new ROM flash.
ok i figured it out.
first i did a 'fastboot erase system -w" then i downloaded the bc-6.00-ebi1.zip and flashed it after i flashed SuperFroyo.
I didnt know that you have to reflash kernels after u flash a rom.. so if i want to try another froyo rom, im gonna need to flash bc-6.00-ebi1.zip again?

Yeah, either Brian Crook's EBI1 kernel or Pershoot's EBI1 kernel. Sometimes, generic 32a kernels will work too. But honestly, I've only had success with Brian Crook's EBI1 and Pershoot's EBI1. On the CM wiki, the CM6 kernel is something something PURE, but when you check About Phone, it's pershoot's.

Need help flashing roms to G1

I have been trying to flash the CM7 Rom to my G1 and continue to get the same error messages... I tried uploading a pic but the app wouldn't let me, so I will try and get the pic posted asap
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
what is your radio/spl?
also have you flashed many other roms before?
Please using following combination for Radio and SPL. Also note, flash radio first and then SPL otherwise G1 will not boot. Also make sure you have Clockworkmod recovery for CM7. This recovery helps for smooth flashing for CM7.

OK, this might be sorta a strange question, but this looks to be the best place to ask it.
Will the Dream be bootable if you flash only the Radio and SPL, leaving untouched the stock Android 1.6?
While I am a Linux geek, I am new to android and prefer to take things one step at a time. That explains why I have a Rooted dream with Amon RA with the stock 1.6 backed up with nandroid.

never tried, theoretically it should be as if you did a factory reset and you would just use your recovery to replace anything lost. but if you want to be safe maybe someone who has will chime in.
besides the point go ahead and flash a new rom, even if you stick with 1.6 firmware the developers have come out with much superior roms over the stock android. if you want only 1.6 try super d or super csdi
ok so i decided to test this out, updating a g1 to the 2708+ radio/spl and not flashing a new rom -------- stuck on g1 boot screen, hit call+menu+power then hit home to reboot to recovery, reflashed rom and gapps, rebooted, now everything is good as can be, so to answer your question --- yes it appears you need to flash a rom after you update your radio/spl
