Hmmm, not sure this is the best place, but it is a problem with my TD2 and certainly any searches so far have yielded little in the way of result.
So we begin - I've had my TD2 since May '09 until last weekend it has been recieving outlook items perfectly via GPRS/3G and Wi-fi all through Activesync/Direct Push without any problems. In fact normally quicker than the same item appearing in Outlook on my laptop via the VPN.
Last weekend we changed broadband supplier and upgraded our router at Head Office. Since then updates through Activesync have been sporadic at best but are normally non-existent. This is despite installing the new self-generated certificate for the new VPN/OWA IP number.
When plugged into my laptop and passing through to the Exchange Server via desktop Activesync the items will update on the phone. Unplug from the laptop and use GPRS and it takes an age to synhcronise before finally saying "Waiting for Network" and not actually downloading anything. Equally using the Wi-Fi at home gets similar results, though this is sometimes mixed up with a Server Temporarily unavailable actual error message rather than the meaningless "Waiting for Network".
Our IT support contractor is flummoxed (they got one of their iPhones to access my account and it worked perfectly and timeously). I have even done a hard reset of the TD2 and rebuilt the settings from scratch and we're still back to the same place.
I can only assume that it is something server side that is upsetting the process, but don't know what. Really annoying as it has all worked perfectly for 11 months and has now stopped working without me actually changing the device settings in any way whatsoever.
I went with a WM over an iPhone to get best MS integration, so why should this wobble give my phone problems when an iPhone can work away just fine?
So, any ideas from the great XDA font of knowledge of all things WM?
Many thanks,
Niall
Turns out the new router that was part of the broadband upgrade didn't have Port Routing configured correctly. One tick of a box and all is sorted for OTA syncing.
Still not working over Wi-Fi at home though so some work still needed somewhere.
Niall
If only it was that easy. Still get the Waiting for Network error.
I even did a hard reset, again, and got the "Waiting for Network" error on the first sync.
Only way to solve it seems to be to turn off SSL, but even that falls down after a while stating that:
Exchange Activsync has encountered an error. If this condition persists, please contact you Exchange Administrator.
Support Code 0x80830002
If I then desktop sync the device to Activsync on the laptop via USB (which passes through to our server Exchange anyway) it seems to "reset" the sync and OTA syncing will work again - for a time, normally failing sometime between 5 and 7am in the morning when I check Activsync on the TD2.
Our IT support contractor has washed their hands of it saying it must be the phone because they've had it working fine for several days on an iPhone and old WM6.1 HTC device syncing with SSL to my account. Having not changed anything on the device I don't understand what is wrong with it to behave so differently. Given that the phone is only 12 months old this a real downer.
Prior to the hard reset I was having intermittent filesys.exe crashing errors but these have gone now. Could it be related?
Flummoxed.
Niall
The IT bods have lent me the WM6.1 device (a Touch HD - man I love Sense 2.5 over Touchflo 3D.....). I have swapped SIMs so my TD2 is temporarily on Vodafone whilst the Touch HD has my T-Mobile SIM in it - both are currently syncing. Will see which one stops working first - so for those who are interested, watch this space!

For those that are interested here's where we are.

Got a new router a while back. Opened Port 80 and 443, all sorted. Obviously when the TD2 was working in the past I just wasn't noticing that Activsync wasn't working over WiFi, which is understandable given that Wi-Fi at home is normally for a bit of Facebooking and Casual Web Browsing and wherever the phone had the tiniest bit of T-Mobile signal it would still get push e-mail.

This appears to be a carrier problem. After working flawlessy OTA with SSL for 5 days (Wednesday to Monday) the Touch HD finally stopped at "Waiting for Network" whilst my TD2 with SSL carried on fine on Vodafone.
After a rather tiresome call to T-Mobile to try and explain the problem and have them tell me they've downloaded the manual for the TD2 and can I check the Activsync settings, settings, etc, I got put on hold for a while before they came back and said they've enabled Mobile E-mail on my account. They had no explanation as to why this had been disabled.
So the TD2 is back on T-Mobile with SSL. As of yesterday there was no improvement in that it would still fail. However I do appreciate that it can take a while for settings to take effect and so far "touch wood" today all is working as it should following a "Wi-fi reset" yesterday afternoon. Will probably update the thread further to confirm all is well or moan!
So in my case this was a carrier issue that caused the intermittent functioning of Activesync OTA. Changing to a different connection type e.g. Wi-Fi or Pass through via Desktop Activsync on USB would allow a successful sync and reset the OTA syncing (I guess it cleared the previous "dead/jammed/FUBAR'd" OTA Activesync connection) for a limited period of time. I am surprised that having Push E-mail blocked by the carrier allowed for intermittent functionality rather than a YES/NO it either works or it doesn't result!?!
So the lesson here is that the ability to receive Push E-mail may be a slightly different function from your Phone provider which can fail despite your data connection appearing to work fine (Web Browsing OTA on the TD2 was consistent throughout). I just hope this saves someone 4 weeks of phonecalls and hassle!

On one laptop I have Office2003 which refuses to sync with my Topaz, just sit there constantly trying to synch. PDA connects to laptop, is visable to edit the storage.
Another laptop has Office2010, this sync perfectly but will not allow checkboxes to be checked for contact, calender etc, only allows Mobile Favourites and OneNote...
Going to try a 3rd laptop [friends] that has Office2007 to see if that will fully sync...
T-Mobile phone monkey lied - Didn't make any difference.
The good news is that the problem is sorted. I've been reliably receiving push-email via Activsync OTA since last Thursday (5 days now).
Again it seems to have been a new router problem server side as we were also starting to experience VPN problems at work. The IT contractors contacted Draytek who told them that in one other instance (also on an LLU line) reducing the MTU value on the router solved the problem. Since doing this (maybe unconnected, the IT bods won't be drawn on it) the connection seems to work again. I've done some googling on MTU and the basic premise of reducing the value seems to make sense to me, smaller packets are harder to drop.

Any super techs that actually understand this stuff like to comment?
I can only hope this record of woes shorterns the inconvenience for others in the future!
Thanks,
Niall

Hi all,
Has anyone had/seen this problem? Whenever I connect my TYTN II (Vodafone v1615) to my laptop (Sony VGN-BX197XP) runnig XP sp2 the laptop's WIFI connection drops. It then keeps dropping out and coming back even AFTER I've disconnected the device - I have to reboot to get it sensible again.
As you can imagine, this is a little inconvenient!
Can anyone help?

Sounds like the same symptoms that some people were getting with Activesync 4.5 on some machines a year ago - I thought it had been solved by now - never bit me, but my wife had terrible problems with a Vario 1 and her Sony Vaio. Have a look under "Settings->Connections->USB" - is there a check box somewhere around there to turn off "advanced" functionality? If so, do it and see if that fixes it. Microsoft added the option of a sort of IP tunnel through Activesync which really seemed to screw some WiFi chip sets,,,
Martin
Unfortunately I can't see any similar function but your pointer towards active sync seems to be right. When I uninstalled Active Sync and plugged the device in, it was fine. I installed it and as soon as it synced, the wireless dropped out. Most infuriating!
It's not any odd software I've installed either as, due to another issue, I had to hard-reset it and watch it reset itself to defaults and I was only connecting it so that I could drop the backup software on so that I could restore my backup... The device was effectively quite virginal at the time.
I recall this being an issue with the wireless card drivers rather than AS. Are you up to date on those?

It's nothing that you did - it was a serious compatibility problem between ActiveSync 4.5 and some PC WiFi chip sets - including those used in many Vaios. I checked on my Vario III after my original posting and the setting is still there under "Settings->Connections->USB to PC" and its called "Enable advanced network functionality". If you turn that off, I think it may solve your problem. I'm not sure exactly what functionality you will loose, but basic synchronisation will still work...
Martin
Subject says it all.
AS works (usually) for a while after reset, but then it just hangs saying "Synchronising" but gets nowhere.
Sometimes killing and restarting AS works, but usually I have to reset the damn thing.
Anyone else having this problem/found a solution? Not sure I'll get any sense from Orange (in fact, I am sure I'll get sod-all sense from them!)
Ferg.
P.S. Got HTC Home, iMate WMP Today, Live Search, Voice Command and many other apps installed. Perhaps it doesn't like Home or so.
More likely its a connection thing.
Try disabling advanced functionality in Start, settings, connections, USB-to-PC
That will make it try a USB connection instead of an IP based one.
Sorry, I should have said I was referring to AS on the device itself - it's Direct Push that's mucked up.
I meant on the device... but that was based on AS with pc
However, if you have an exchange server in the mix, then I would guess it either is losing the connection to the server. What happens if you leave it until it errors? (ie what error code)
Can you sync with the server OK when you do connect with USB to an internet enabled pc?
Well, the funny thing is it doesn't give me an error (or I've not waited the hours required for it to time-out).
The TyTN I have works a lot better under the same circumstances (same Exch, same account, sam SIM card etc, so it would deffo point towards the TyTN II itself.
The only thing left to do, I supose, is to ramp up the Exch logging and see what that says, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of that.
Thanks for your assistance, unwired.
F.
Ok so its definitely the device...
Do you have signal issues on 3g where you are? Is your network allowing simultaneous voice and data? Have you installed the server certificate OK on your device?
Yeah, all the Exchange stuff is configured correctly - that's my job after all.
No 3G issues (since I use the TyTN from the same place.
Although I did notice recently that I can't actually have adata connection and a call at the same time (with 3G coverage). I guess I should be able to...
F.
sorry to bring up an old post,
having same sort of problem, but only when trying to get attachments. seems to take forever, (5-10 mins stuck on syncing then looks like it gives up) but the attachment is then there, which is crazy as its a 30k word doc which should take seconds.
did you work out any kind of solution?
edit: this is on a clients kaiser
Hello,
I have been experiencing an strage connectivity problem. I'll try to be as precise as possible to facilitate understanding.
I have owned an HTC TYTN II (unlocked, UK version bought in USA through MobilePlanet) connected in the USA through T-Mobile since December 2007. I subscribe to T-Mobile full internet ($19.99 internet2.voicestream.com, no proxies)
The phone has worked wonders during this time and I have push email with Microsoft exchange 2003, I could browse the internet, any sites, download youtube videos, streaming audio, whether for the home plug-in, etc.
Suddenly, 2 days ago, I was downloading the news on an RSS reader and it could not connect to any of the feeds. Strange! I thought. I reset the phoen and everything continue working. By the way, even when the RSS reader and PIE could not connect, I DID continue to receive emails through the same EDGE connection.
yesterday something similar happened. PIE would stop at "Locating..." even for www.google.com. I changed my DNS servers to OpenDNS and it "seemed" to solve the issue, however, a few hours later, Live messenger could not connect. I reset the DNS servers to the T-Mobile default and it did not fix the problem. PIE cannot connect, whether plugin cannot connect, Live messenger cannot connect, prRSS reader cannot connect ..BUT...Outlook receives push emails as if nothing had happened.
This morning I called T-mobile. They made me go through the configuration again. Made me change my SIM card to another T-Mobile phone (my wife's) in the same area to eliminate power outages or tower problems as the likely cause. Again, the Tytn could not connect by my wife's phone with my SIM card connected perfectly (yahoo, google, etc). I reset the TYTN II to use the T-zones (wap) connection instead, and the same thing happened: Connecting...Locating...Opening.... stays there forver. T-Mobile rep suggested "Clear Storage", which I did, and then a "hard-cold-factory reset" to no avail.
before the reset, I tried a, little tool I have to troubleshoot networking problems. it basically does an HTTP/GET from a given site and dumps the HTML text on the screen. i tried it with Google and yahoo and it worked, very quickly, as expected.
Bottom line. This is the situation right now:
- Factory reset TYTN II. No custom applications installed. No tweaks or customizations.
- T-Mobile full internet plan (internet2.voicestream.com)
- PIE doesn't work (Connecting...Locating---Opening... stays there forever)
- Live messenger doesn't Work
- prRSS doesn't work, weather plugin doesn't work
- Outlook exchange connection DOES WORK and has never stopped working.
The same setting used to work for 2 months. Phone has not been dropped, gotten wet, exposed to magnetic fields, etc.
PIE works through other connections (WiFi for example)
UPDATE: If I try to navgate to a web page using PIE, i.e, www.google.com, it goes: Connecting...Locating...Opening.... after several long minutes it error outs with this error message:
The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. check the connection and try again later.
I have owned WM phones since the Motrola MPX-200, MPX-220, Dash (WM3, WM5, WM6....) and Symbian phones (E61) and I have never experienced anything like it.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Much appreciated. Thanks in advance...
Luis
I have worked in IT support for 8 years at the desktop support level. I dont understand all but can usually figure things out. I apologies in advance for being a rookie. I am frustrated with this device and need help!!
I upgraded ATT tilt to Dutty 6.1 Build 19700.duttys 6.1 about 1 month ago and Since I did this I have had a lot of problems. Build has all the goodies and more but since the upgrade I cant get any work done because I am always tweaking in an attempt to get the device working properly. I have tried to reset and reflash sevral times to start all over again but I end up with the same issues.
1. Unable to sync with active sync. I have disabled avast anti and I still am unable to sync. I also added port 990 to firewall and no good. I have re-installed active Sync 5 times. It only works when I play with it and then the device does not stay connected. It boots the connection 1 or 2 minutes after sync
2. No email apps or programs work. I tried the java versions and all. Messaging says error synchronizing and gives this message - "cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings" My settings are OK as far as I can see. I purposely connect to media net before opening email to make sure the data connection is present. I had full blown HSDPA in NY city yesterday and no email or GPS working.
3. GPS and GPS upgrade is not working. Does GPS use its own radio? Does dutty upgrade break the radio? Not sure what is happening here as well.
4. No you tube video as usual. This has always been broken and remains broken for me. I tried installing flash bundle, codecs, etc.... No good.
I constantly get prompted the below
"cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings"
Only thing that works is web browser.
Can someone please point me to a good solid working and mostly complete ROM for the US att tilt "kaiser". Maybe this is all I need. I have trouble finding ROM info and whether its current via the site. It gets confusing and I just want to set up once and forget, if you know what I mean. Please provide any links I might need to a fix, rom, tweak, etc..
Please help!
Steve
Steve, I updated to Dutty's ROM a while ago and all worked well until about a couple of weeks ago. I do not attribute my problems to the ROM though but rather the Tilt itself. My first issue was related to no activesync connectivity. My Tilt became an "unknown" device. Looking at my USB port from inside of the battery compartment notice bent pins. I was able to straighten the pins out but only could connect with one of about 10 USB cables that I had around. Once you have loaded Dutty's room I would recommend reconfiguring your connectivity to AT&T. You can download a CAB with all of the configuration setting on this board. Recently my touch screen would freeze up and not work well. I thought it might be the ROM but later found out there must have been some physical problem. Two days ago I called ATT and RMA'd my phone. I recieved the new phone yesterday and configured it last night. All is working well (USB and Touchscreen, new ROM, New SPL and new radio).
BTW last night saw (do a google search - I don't remember where I saw it) a revised video / flash version of TCXXXX software. With Dutty's ROM (and current) my GPS worked great. I use it with a couple of test GPS programs and TomTom on Com4. I also have an external BT GPS and it works well with that. Check to make sure your email is not configured for a proxy or local network connection.
Pete
Thanks Pete, Since this post I have gotten the GPS to work. There is a GPS app in programs\tools that has an enable option. I stumbled across it looking for answers. Ill check the pins on my cable as well.
Dutty's connections wizard actually had the wrong info for ATT america. I had to remove ID and password to get it working for Media Net so I hope the cab you reference is a newer one than is on my tilt.
I am still getting the same message for email. "cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings"
I have to be missing something in the connection settings. I will try the cab, maybe it has been updated since Dutty's build.
Can you think of any thing in the connection settings?? Opera works but email gets error and message to check connections.
Ill let you know how that works.
Here are the essential 3 cab files you need for your Tilt.
1) fixes keyboard
-Install, soft reset, done
2) Sets At&t settings
-install, set up email but do not save your password
then do this
start>settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks>change both drop downs to media net>click edit on both drop downs and go to proxy settings here you will uncheck everything. remember to do it to both dropdowns.
3) removes hidden proxy (which will allow your email to work if you are using a saved password)
-install, then go to your email set up and save your password.
edit: This will also allow you to update htc weather, quickgps, and a number of other programs without receiving errors.
good luck and have a nice day
Firstly I hope i haven't messed this up by fiddling about with installing manila 2D because it did seem to work fine, i've taken it off since to see if it makes a difference but of course Noooooooo.
Vodafone UK are being pretty useless about this because the handset is no longer on their list for support...typical.
I use my Tytn2 tilt as my alround comms device, it's my phone, my diary, and my modem for my Macbook.
I got the phone last january and after much hassle setting up the bluetooth PAN i got it working sweet.
I have my business NTL email account and my googlemail account on my phone and on my laptop.
I pick up my business emails on my phone as and when i need to. I use the googlemail account on the laptop to send images I take once photoshopped.
this has worked amazingly well for the last 13 months or so. I connect my phone to the internet, then over bluetooth i connect my laptop to the PAN on my phone, I could surf the net, FTP, and email all day long no problem.
recently (about the last two or three weeks) i've found I can't send an email on my laptop via my phone. it comes back with an error saying it can't connect to the SMTP server.
I can still surf the net and still receive emails but I can't send ANYTHING.
I have tried altering account settings but it makes no difference and besides it all works perfectly when I connect to a WIFI point.
On my phone the NTL world account has send.vodafone.net set as the smtp
the googlemail account is set as smtp.googlemail.com (this is temperamental but has worked fine in the past)
on my laptop the NTL world account is set to smtp.ntlworld.com
and the googlemail account is smtp.googlemail.com
these work fine over WIFI. But over the PAN they receive but the outgoing won't connect.
Please could anybody with any ideas help me out, vodafone is a loss, and i'm not due for an upgrade until june, although I'm not ready to give up on this yet, it should still be working as it did a couple of months ago
At the moment I am a little reluctant to do a total hard reset as it took so long to get the phone (with the help of the bluetooth DUNN patch) to get the damn thing to work as a modem in the first place.
