Hi, after doing 1 hour research on google and this site and finding no answer, I'm creating this thread, so I'll really appreciate your help.
I recently purchased used Nexus one, the seller said it's bootloader is not unlocked and it's not rooted, how can I verfiy this? I wanna make sure the phone is locked and no custom roms were installed for warranty purpose. Also, sorry if it's a stupid question, how on earth do I know if My N1 is T-Mobile or ATT version? It does not say anywhere on the box and seller did not know either.

turn the phone off and on and on the first screen do you see a silver/grey padlock at the bootom in the middle
Well if the splash screen has a lock that is unlocked at the bottom of the screen the boot loader has been unlocked.
PS
Warrantys are not transferable...
When you first power on your Nexus One, an image if an unlocked or open lock will appear immediately, near the bottom of the screen. if this image does not appear, your phone is not unlocked.
As far as I know, this is the easiest way to check.
If I purchased my Nexus One using the T-Mobile option ($180), and I rooted, is the phone SIM UNLOCKED? Thanks

No, I only see Google Nexus logo in the middle of screen, means the phone was never unlocked or rooted Thanks a lot, now I feel dumb! Once the phone is unlocked and rooted, is their anyway to put it back into Factory state and restore the warranty? You guys give up your 1 year precious warranty for buggy custom roms? Did anyone send their rooted N1 to HTC for repair and warranty was denied?
the first thing to check is the search function in the forum. now hold down the camera key and the power button as soon as the first screen comes on hit the home button and the arrow keys at the same time and the phone will tell you if it unlocked!

Does the unlocked padlock go for sim unlock as well? Thanks

No, you cannot relock your device. Or "bootloader" as I believe its really called, therefore you cannot currently reinstate your warranty. Many people have gotten through HTCs system with common hardware problems though, but don't get mad if you're charged or denied - its obviously your fault.
Also, the ROMs on the N1 are not "buggy", we don't exactly have that many to be buggy exactly, but the ones out there are nearly perfect. Even in Alpha, Desire ports are very nice. Currently there are more kernels than ROMs though, we don't exactly have many things to port it seems. So developers are making other changes, improving things, etc., I assume when more Android devices come out that are worth porting - the development section will be more spicy.
As mentioned before, warranty is non-transferrable. The phone comes out of the box unlocked in the sense that you can use it on either gsm carrier. (At&t or T-Mobile).
Now wether you'll get 3g on one or the other, that's the real question. I know there's a way to find out but it escapes me.
Taken from Nexusoneforum.net:
Look for the light gray text stamped on the phone. It's located right under the battery, so take out the battery to see it.

no, once the phone is unlocked the only way to tell is to insert a non tmo sim! Hope that helps!
All N1s are unlocked/unbranded. The only difference between the full price tmo version and contract version is that the latter will come with a sim in it.
Yes all Nexus one are sim unlocked! Will work with any gsm sim

Relax mate! not everyone is tech savvy like you. Remember everyone is a noob at some point, so take a chill pill and ask the mod to delete the thread. The purpose of forums is questions, answers, discussions and 99.9% of people google things before coming here because it's EASIER to google, but sometimes you don't find what you looking for on google. Now i know once you unlock your bootloader it shows a small lock of the splack screen, correct??
Well how in depth does HTC really go into figuring out if you have rooted the phone or not for, lets say, a repair?
Because i also know that they "say" they will wave the voided warrenty for a dust problem but I've also seen problems with them failing to go through with that.
So could we theoretically just change the splash screen (or boot 2 i think it is) to the original splash screen without the lock and maybe slip by HTC's warranty?
Now if this seems illegal or something I'm terribly sorry, i just want to have a way for people who rooted to get the "full" experience to have a fall back if we dont figure out how to re-lock, or if they just simply damage the phone.
They have the power to bring a bricked phone back from the dead, how far do you think they can go?
Yes, but...
Yes, i know they could really do anything they want. (even replace the phone) But how far do they WANT to go...Do you see?
I mean why would they waste their time trying to see if your rooted or not, unless they check EVERY single phone no matter what...
Every phone gets checked. All they have to do is plug it in to their test beds, which they do to every phone. They also check every phone for water damage, and not just the white dot in the battery bay, they have others hidden throughout the phone.
The SPL won't let you flash the splash over it
Alrighty
Okay, thats all i wanted to know. I just thought maybe they didnt check every phone, maybe they used a different computer or something to check for root and they just used a simple technique for a damage check.
I do know that we cant flash the splach but im sure it will be soon to come, and by that time i'm sure we will be able to relock anyways...

Maybe... what we need is someone to leak a signed .nbh of the SPL. That is the golden ticket to being able to re-lock.
It even says unlocked in the bootloader.

There's a white dot on the battery bay? You actually got me curious, as installing my full body skin i did get my phone quite wet. I can't find this white dot that you are talking about.
I had to send my phone recently for a repair and it was rooted. They not only accepted it, they sent me a brand new nexus within the week. I don't think they have time to check out each and every phone for something that trivial. This isn't Apple!

very nice! -congrats!
All they have to do is power on the phone and they can see if the bootloader is unlocked. That's all they need to void the warranty. Fortunately for you guys, they haven't started following through with that... yet.
I had an idea but dont know if it will work... change the boot animation/screen to a white(the lock icon color) screen, the lock will not be visible because its also white. The tech ppl will think its part of the malfunction...
hmmmm
I think you're thinking the same thing as me sort of, as I stated befor maybe when we figure out how to change the splash screen we could replace it with one without the lock icon.

I wonder if simply changing that would be enough to "fool" HTC. If so then that would be quite sad.. sad as in pathetic. I would assume they would run more extensive test.

They could even go as far as pressing the trackball down when turning it on. and seeing *** UNLOCKED *** in small, friendly letters inside the bootloader menu.
Oh nice liam, I didn't know that.. I don't even have a Nexus so obviously I wouldnt. Kinda embarassing.. I was being so radical to be responded to with a simple answer.
I think the speaker on my One has blown. The sound is very distorted even when on low volumes. Could this be a software issue or is it most likely to be hardware?
I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed the latest version of TrickDroid so I'm not sure where I stand with the warranty.
Thanks is advance.
On HTC warranty - most probably it is void now. You can call them and check if they are willing to fix a rooted phone.
In EU (and I assume you are in UK) you have Statutory Warranty - 2 years. This is regulated by consumer regulations and this comes from EU. This one is NOT void through rooting - http://piana.eu/root. This said - I am currently having serious problems with fixing my S3 this way in Norway (legislation is identical) and I have to go through consumer counsel/tribunal which takes up to 6 months in total...
If you're in a country where covered by appropriate legislation, a Sale of Goods Act law will almost certainly a problem like this so soon after purchase, especially considering you're not at fault.
Check out if your country has such legislation which covers you, and if so ask for a replacement under that legislation. If not, eh... ask politely?

Forgive my ignorance as I have only had Samsung phones the past few years but, shouldn't you just be able to flash back to stock and unroot? I wouldn't think it would be too difficult. However, as I said, I have only had experience with Samsung phones for a while.

The bootloader is nlocked through HTCDev so they have the IMEI. Also when you relock it says 'relocked' instead of 'locked' (exactly like when you mess with pc odin and you flash back to a samsung rom it says 'official' but the flash counter isn't reset). To be able to get back a 'locked' status (so the equivalent of triangle away on samsung devices) you need s-off.

Unlocking doesn't void the warranty more than likely. At least here in the U.S they don't care

Magic isn't allowed on XDA.
I'm gonna report on this tomorrow... I got a couple of pops in my speaker when playing YouTube videos on the lowest volume at first. For some reason when I played music at full volume there were no problems but as soon as I put the volume lower and played a YouTube video every know and then i would get a pop sound.

I just took then phone back to a Phones4U shop and they replaced it there and then. It would seem if the phone develops a fault within 28 days of purchase you can take it back to the retailer instead of HTC. Most retailers wouldn't have a clue if you have unlocked the bootloader and flashed custom Roms so it didnt matter.
As I couldnt find the correct RUU I just took it into the shop with TrickDroid's Rom still installed and they didn't question it at all!!

Hi there, do you have the youtube link for the crack sound? I want to try with my New One estimate to arrive tomorrow.
After further investigation, the sound problem only shows up when certain videos are played (hi-def MKVs I think). Sound is fine otherwise, so I think it is a software issue. Can anyone else try THOR on HTC Watch, at the beginning of the film, when it should be silent, do you hear the speakers crackle even at low volumes?
On my replacement handset the bottom speaker has totally gone. No sound coming through it at all. Back to Phones4U :crying:

I never noticed this but couple days ago, my wife's note 3 started to lock up constantly throughout the day. I told her these things happen sometimes and to just take the battery out, and put it back in and let it restart. When she did this, I realized under the SAMSUNG on bootup, there was an unlocked padlock with the wording CUSTOM under it. I was shocked and confused how this can be...
I asked her about it, and she said it's been like that since we got the phones. She remembers at the AT&T store that the seal was broken off by the salesman, so there is no way it was a returned phone.
What gives? ATT is going to give her a refurb phone, but she's very mad because we've had the phone for 2 months and had no idea she had an unlocked phone, and she shouldn't be penalized for getting a 'used' phone.
They told her that it was the nova launcher that is causing the issues, becuase it's an unofficial app. these people....
I told her maybe she got lucky and got a dev phone (too bad dev phone keeps locking up lol)
any ideas on this?
try running the "root checker" app on it. Mine showed it after I first flashed it.

This is hilarious, I installed nova before I root my phone, and there was no custom and pad lock when reboot, the custom and pad lock only showed up after I rooted my phone, the custom and pad lock had remained on the screen even I unroot the phone. I think your wife got a returned phone.
It still had all the seals on it!!!
here are the pictures. she got a replacement phone, and that is messed up too. the screen fails to turn on. everytime you press ON, the phone vibrates, but nothing from screen. She said after she took battery out etc, THAT phone ended up with the custom logo at bottom too. I have no idea what she's doing to these phones!!!!
I thought the custom only happened when you rooted it and placed safestrap or a recovery on them.
Looks normal to me.its not a developer edition.
I am curious as to why it is throwing this Custom status when it isn't.

i would use the return to MJ5 stock thread and flash the odin MJ5, then the MI9 fix and then the proper Mj5 files again and see if that clears up the issue. something seems to be lingering in the system that gives it the "custom" status.

here is the link to the Back to MJ5 stock thread, in all honesty once you get the files downloaded it only takes about 20 min to have the phone booting back up to stock MJ5 "WithOut ROOT" i just did this about 2 weeks ago. it DID get rid of the "custom" status and recovered my brick at the same time.
def worth trying!!!
You can root with kingo and use triangle away to remove the custom status.
As far as the other issues, a factory reset might help but a restore will be more likely to get rid of everything causing problems

then I can show the refurbished phone that I just received and how the screen fails to turn on.
hopefully the corp store can get the idea, and give me a new phone or something

OH CRAP NO!!!!
if they SEE the custom status, they will not even deal with you unless you get a really cool rep. They instantly think that you tried to ROOT the phone and that is why you have ANY ISSUE you are talking about. i would not bring that phone into the store looking like that bruh.
the custom status is a symbol for root/modded phones. just do the stock restore, and IF at that point you want to take it back go for it. at least you will not have the custom lock screen going against you.

they will accuse her/him of tinkering and that is what caused the custom logo. even IF it came that way. i dont see them eating that blame as im sure they have quality control and procedures in place that should catch that kind of slip. and if it did slip through....you expect them to say yep your right we screwed up.

I would just flash back to stock & see if it comes back. If that doesn't work, the radio may have just coincidentally gone bad in the middle of modding. I see a lot of S5's & no problems with signal so I wouldn't give up on Samsung yet if this is your only issue.
BTW if you go into your settings, about device, status screen, does your imei still show up?

That's not the only issue...I'm upset about the bootloader being locked and the charging port flap no longer stays shut.
My IMEI is still there it only works on WiFi now AT&T is sending me a warranty replacement in 4 business days I'm about to use my BF's old S4 in the meantime

I feel you on the bootloader issue.. everyone here does lol. I haven't seen the flap problem but you're definitely not having the best luck with the S5. Hopefully it's a fluke but make sure you're completely stock when you send the old one back b/c if they find any evidence that you voided the warranty (flashing, rooting, etc) they don't notify you, they just bill your account $400 and keep the phone.

Oh yeah I odin'd it yesterday, it's back to stock completely. Didn't even install an app on it since it has no signal LOL. I'm using my BF's old S4 and running 4.4.4 AOSP ROM right now... I don't know if I'll want to go back to my S5 when it comes in... Oh how I missed AOSP

Did you try one of the USSD codes for a Hard reset on your old S5 (*2767*3855#)? Sometimes they fix a little bit more than a normal factory reset.

I thank you. Yea I'm finding it hard to get signitures as I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account, just don't want my info allover the net. So if you would help spread the word amongst the developing community that would help, this applies to anyone who cares about what we do here. Again I thank you for your support.

Today i finally got m z3+, 3rd xperia in my android history, first thing i checked was bl status and it wasn't allowed unlock.
This is a first time for me and it put me in a hard position beause I honestly can't live without root ^^
Now i sent back and got a refund and am trying to make the best decision to find an unlockable one but have a few questions
Any idea on an average percentage of locked devices? Are they very common or is it 50/50?
The price range for this phone goes from 300€ to 900€, with amazon selling it personally at 575€, in electronics store in my town 499, so 500 is average but there are several offers for way less online..are cheaper phones from stocks for generic market request and perhaps more likely to be locked? I ask this because I previously thought only carrier branded versions were locked. :S
What are your thoughts/experiences?

Was "Find my Xperia" turned on? This makes the BL non-unlockable. Just turn it off and you should be fine.

Dammit, i read the replies as i got back from the post offic to ship back the phone.
I actually thought about trying to unlock it anyway but i was convinced sony wouldn't have given me the unlock code if i tried or it could've bricked the device. This is pretty big news although, it means any bl is unlockable?
Didn't know about the find my xperia, very good to know, when replacement arrives in a few days i'll try again, thank you guys.
