My Search-Fu has failed me on this, so I am hoping to get some guidance from here.
I have a friend who just got a Droid. Coming from a Blackberry one thing he is missing is the ability to set the phone to wakeup when he takes it out of the holster.
I know the magnets can do this to a point but they put it into car mode or media mode. He just wants it to wake up to the lock screen.
Seems simple to me with the various seniors on the Droid but for the life of me I cannot find an app to do this. The few threads i find about this ether have arguing about how this is a bad idea or point to ways to keep the screen alive and/or bypass the lock screen. Neither of these are what my friend is looking for.
So, does such an app or setting exist to just wake up the device when removed from a holster? It can be a special holster if it is needed.
Have him download dock nothingness from the market so that when the magnets put him into dock mode, it instead opens up his home screen.

Hmmm, that is not a bad idea. It woul,d require a custom case with a magnet that only triggered when the phone is removed.
So should I assume there is no pre made solution that makes use of the sencers that turn off the display when it is held to your ear??

I haven't heard of anything yet, but maybe there is. If he downgraded to 1.5 then there is no lock screen, you just press the power/lock button and the screen turns on with no slider.

Thanks for the suggestion but it is not what he is looking for. He is looking for the opposite, keeping the lock screen but having the phone wake up when removed from the holster.
Oh well...next step is to see how hard it is to code an android app

I've had issues with the screen since I got the device. Typing on the keyboard, or tapping any buttons, or drawing, the line is very inaccurate where it shows up. In order for it to work I need to press enough to flatten the tip of my finger so the surface area is about a 1cm diameter circle, and the point it makes is random as to what side of the circle it seems to appear on.
I wasn't certain if it was my phone, or me, or what until recently. I bought this generic pogo capacitative stylus (DX sku.23061). I tried it on my phone and it didn't work. I had to push down extremely hard to get any response, so much I was worried about scratching the screen. I was just writing the problem off to the stylus, but I just tried that same stylus on my friends HTC Touch Slide. It worked beautifully. No pressure required, just the corner of the stylus and it gets perfect accuracy.
Is this type of thing going to get better going from 1.6 to 2.1? Is it just a **** phone? Did I get a lemon? It's hard to simply tap a single icon on the home screen without the one next to it being tapped instead.
Yeah, I tried a stylus too and it was useless for me on the Zio, bit I do not know if that will change with the update

I wouldn't imagine it would change much from an update. Capacitive is mechanical, and is only as good as the screen itself.
My phone has zero issues with the touchscreen display. calibration is bang on (within 1mm).
I'd suggest to RMA it or swap it out if you have a protection plan-- sounds like there may have been some defective products released.
I'm having the same issue with the touchscreen on this phone. I have been posting in several posts about a few issues I've been having but it seems either i'm posting in the wrong areas or i'm invisible in the post altogether.
I'm new to posts and its all confusing to me, I am slowly learning how to get through them, and i've been reading the hell out of just about every one on here for this stinking junk phone to a point i'm about to take my hammer and smash the thing and just buy a real phone that works.
Sounds like a defective touch screen. Hope you have a warranty or protection plan :-\

BTW
If the general public isn't aware, if you have your device plugged in for charging (USB or AC) your touchscreen will not respond accurately.
I'm not sure why this is, but it's something to be aware of.

I'm still noticing some touch screen issues that were present in the old firmware. For example, I will hit the power button to wake up the phone, and the slide to unlock wont respond until after several attempts. If it does respond right away, it will unlock and then the touch screen becomes completely unresponsive. Happens several times a day to me and this is the second Zio I have had since the phone's launch last year that has done this. Also if I have a screen lock pattern, that will not respond either, but as soon as you touch "Emergency Call" it responds to just that. It will always clear up after a couple tries, but it is very annoying and resetting the phone doesn't help either.
How much memory is free on your phone?

the only thing i have noticed with the lock screen if you halfway unlock it and let go that the unlock slide completely disappears and its only happened once. putting it back to sleep and waking it back up brings it back.
My phone usually runs with 30 to 60 MB of free memory. It's done it before right after a reset I don't believe it has anything to do with memory.

I also am running with 60MB free space, I have the XDA app and the 2.3 launcher running.
I wonder if there is any way to increase the available memory, it would definitely do the phone some good. Perhaps a custom rom about 50MB in size would help.

Over the last few months I've lost some weight (so most of my shorts and pants are a little big now) and being the type of guy to put his phone in his pocket, I've been getting quite a few accidental calls.
Yes I am locking it 99% of the time. What happens is that I'm using a non-pattern unlock and while its moving around in my pocket my phone ends up opening the keyboard. What does this do? It wakes the screen. A little more tumbling around in my pocket = unlocked! and so on .
Is there a way to disable this? I can't seem to find one. I checked out an app called Confirm Call or something like that and it's just a button to confirm. Since it's just a button and not a pattern it'll just get tapped anyway in my pocket.
I'm trying to avoid using pattern lock as pattern lock make it tough to answer/check the phone at a traffic light or similar situations :-/
I think I've trawled the internet enough to know there doesn't seem to be a real way of doing this as far as disabling slider wake-up, and no dialers seem to use anything other than a Call Confirm button which would just be the same thing all over again, with one extra tap :-/.
There is one but doesn't seem to be able to disable slider wake up in 2.2/2.3 (or just 2.3)
What type of app do you want?
Elaborate what you need so people may help you.
You can try using slider only. Try if you can keep only one letter password and also disable press ok button after entering password.

What I think would essentially work is an app or way by script that;
Disables slider-open screen wake.
I've searched about this and there doesn't seem to be a way that works on GB, only for eclair and maybe froyo.
In the mean time I've just realised that I could just put the dialer on a different bottom shortcut row . At least it makes it really difficult to make accidental calls but doesn't solve the whole unlocking-in-pocket problem I have and judging by the posts about it, quite a few others too.
So...I just replaced the touch screen digitizer on a friend's Bionic. Unfortunately, somewhere during the process, we lost the power/sleep switch that fits on the top of the phone frame. Everything else works fine, and the device can be powered on or woken up by using anything thin enough to fit in where the power switch would be and hit the button. But obviously this is not a feasible option for using the phone on a day-to-day basis.
Other than purchasing a replacement switch, which looks like that may not be too easy to find, does anyone have any suggestions on making a makeshift switch to use? Something that could be installed on the frame so he can power on the phone and wake it up without using a pen/clip/etc.?
Thanks!!
Is this what you are looking for?
http://www.cellulardr.com/verizon-d...-android-motorola-xt875-top-power-button.html
Thank you, yes that is the part. But it'll take quite a while to ship to my location. Does anybody have any suggestions for jury-rigging the power button for the time being? I was thinking a small piece of metal of some kind perhaps?
Thanks!
Loving my HTC One, but I have such small hands that I can hardly reach the Power button to wake it up after it goes to sleep!
Does anyone know of an app where I can use the Volume button instead?
Thanks in advance.
Only way to possibly assign the sleep/wake function to the volume buttons would mean having to be rooted. I don't know if anyone's made that change yet though, it might just require editing a single file. Don't have any experience with This myself so not 100%. Just know it requires root.

After a quick search online I've discovered Auto Screen On in the Play Store, which lets me double tap the proximity sensor (left of top speaker) to wake it up.
Works perfectly but an app using the Volume button would be much better.
With this app your screen has to be awake all the time and will drain your battery i think.
On TrickDroid v2.0.0 u can choose VolWake in Aroma

Moved your thread to the proper section for you. Please remember to post only in the correct sections. Thanks.
I've heard of some app for a nexus 4 that allows you to just swipe the screen and it turns on. Not sure what it was called, but you get the concept.
Good job I have big hands really because this nor generally using the phone is an issue due to its size.

I'm assuming sweep2wake or swipe2wake will eventually be implemented. It's basically swiping left to right on the capacitive buttons to wake the phone.
The One X had it, but it was a bit buggy when I used it in terms of it not working if the phone was asleep for a long time. I got rid of my One X a while ago though so idk how the feature works now and if they figured it all out., but I expect it to get implemented on the HTC One eventually.
The proximity sensor isn't a bad idea, jailbroken iPhone 5 etc...have the always on proximity where if you cover the proximity it'll turn the screen off and eventually lock the phone after a while. So you can put it in your pocket and it will turn the display off, bring it out of pocket and it comes on without needing to slide to unlock or anything. It's good if your messaging constantly.

iirc showp1984 said he's getting a htc one, and see oz did too so hopefully one of them will bring sweep to wake Zarboz did an excellent job on the incredible s and he doesn't even have the device
Sweep to wake generally doesn't work sometimes in deep sleep. I use vol wake and the. Sweep to go to sleep on my incredible s now s2w is actually the greatest thing ever
MOD EDIT: Removed
Is it possible to completely disable Smart Screen? First and foremost, I don't want my screen to come on when I wave. Secondly, when I hit a bump in my car, the screen will come on. The phone could be sitting on a table and think I'm touching/waving at it, and the screen will come on. Ridiculous.

Disable it within the moto app. Why would you completely disable the moto display feature? Well, I do think they need to fix the sensitivity of it. You can just disable the approach one and you should be good to go. Once you get used the moto display, you couldn't go back to another phone that doesn't have that feature. It also helps with the longevity of your power button because you won't have to press power button each time you want to just check the time. Just slide up!

I couldn't stand it. My phone seemed to never go into standby. That said, it's disabled now.
Don't worry, it don't mess with standby or your battery juice, test it with BBS, you will see!
