[Q] Poor Reception Solved By Updated Radio? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So like the subject says, can I solve my recent poor reception problem by updating the radio version on my N1? Reception has gone down the tubes lately and I'm really not sure if it's the update to Android v2.2 that did it or if AT&T is randomly starting to suck in my area.
It could be both, though I'm not sure. AT&T has tendencies to stink it up reception wise, but in CT, and at least in Hartford county, minus sporadic areas of poor reception, it's all good here. As for the Android version, I really can't honestly remember having reception issues this badly with v2.1.
So any thoughts?
(And if this is in the wrong forum, I apologize, but it's more of a question and I just want an answer from similar users like myself, so I posted here).

I've never noticed any change in reception when I switched between radios on my ATT nexus. But some people claim they do. Best is to try it and see.

Edge, but no 3G in Tennessee At&t

Hello all-
I just got in my Diamond today and after working on it about an hour, I still can only get Edge (and very small reception and SSLLOOWW data). I currently have a tilt with a flashed ROM running 6.1 and got perfect 3G reception from it here at my desk. I use At&t here. Could the lack of the 850 band be my issue. Please give me some clues or point me to a tutorial to get everything set up to par for my Diamond. I've already searched this whole forum.
Thanks a lot!
Oh dear here we go again....if you had done a search you would have saved yourself so much hassle.
The Diamond you have wont support 3G on AT&T because its missing a £G attenna...even though your settings will show that it can support the band for AT&T 3G but in reality you CANNOT get 3G access with the Diamonds that are out at the moment.
Only way your going to be able to get 3G in America is by waiting for the proper American version of the phone...as to when its out...could be july/August.
Well...Thats the bad part of me that gets way too excited. I'm going to try to return it. I'm sure my fiance that im marrying in 3 weeks will love to hear the news of my lack of research. Thanks!
LOL its ok...its just been explained a few times on here that the Diamonds that are on the market arent really suitable for the American 3G market...your just gonna have to wait a bit for the American version.
For what i's worth - thanks for your time with a stupid question.

No problems buddy, its ok...thats what we are here for...to help each other out.
Apologies if i was a bit abrupt in my first post...been a long day
no 3g
for what it is worth, i have the same issue with no 3g but i have edge and so far find it fine for what i need it for. For others, the added speed that you get may be worth it. I love my Diamond otherwise, despite the battery. I will however get the usa version when it comes out, mainly for reception purposes since i feel the lack of 850 band lessens the reception a little... But so far I love it. Btw i have the ME rom which is fast and smooth and have no issues so far other than i cant hide the SIM contacts even with the tweak.

Nexus 3G better than G1 now....

Okay, after the update to the Nexus my wife is getting MUCH better 3G coverage. Our house is on the edge of 3G/EDGE... I get Edge with very rare 3G... she is getting almost constant 3G (and 3 bars of it). In my work building she gets 3G and I do not.
Seems like whaever google did to the Nexus REALLY helped 3G coverage for us. HOW can we do the same for the G1.... or, what is making the difference?
Its most likely what ever it is that picks the signal up thats in the phone.
They most likely made it stronger so it could pick the signal up better.
idk if there is anything you could do to make it work on your g1...
unless you know how the hardware works in there.
I frankly know very little... but it is very obvious and I know there are folks on here with both the G1 and N1 that may be able to see the same (if they are on the edge of 3G). May not be as noticable for those in really good 3G coverage.
Is there a new radio we can load? I am very jealous of the Nexus' 3G connection in comparison to mine.
Im not sure. I dont think so but then again I wouldnt know.

The N1 has a newer, better, yada yada yada radio itself that can get better signal with less juice...
Putting the N1 radio ROM on a G1 would do nothing, except brick it, but it won't make the radio in the G1 any better... personally, I think the G1 has a damn good radio as is, though (Best I ever experienced until the N1, and that is including the new BB's and WM's). The N1 gets 1 more bar at my Dad's than my G1, which is very impressive! But the G1 getting 1-2 bars is impressive as well considering every other phone I have owned or tested got nothing unless you stood by the front door or went outside.

Sprint coverage retreating...

Hello all,
Curious if others have seen recent issues with Sprints coverage. I am in Utah and saw great service the day of the 4G launch. That lasted for about a week, and has been going downhill since.
I am seeing this on my Hero and on my Wife's. We are both running custom ROMs, but totally different ones.
Anyway, curious if others are seeing this...
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Must be your area, everything's fine here in Tampa, FL but in Orlando, FL inside the retention building I work in service has sucked the last few days as well
ive had a perfect 5 bars where i live.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but when is the last time you have updated your PRL and profile in Settings->About Phone->System updates? If it's been a while (or if you've never done it) you may want to try that and see if you notice any improvements.
I've been noticing this issue for a few months now. Thinking back on it, that would probably be sometime shortly after 4G launch. My phones (Hero and SCP-8400), my mom's phone (some green little BB-KB-style slider I can't remember the name of), my sister's phone (original Rumor), and my step-dad's phone (PRO-200) are all having more reception issues than usual in many places. It's not a *huge* deal, but in my house for instance, it causes me to roam more often (usually flipping between roaming and not roaming, which seems to hurt my battery life slightly), and it's just overall more annoying. Been wondering why, but keep forgetting to ask Sprint about it (who will probably have no answer for me anyway).
The 4G launch, Evo and Epic are all adding a lot of customers to Sprint, meaning towers are handling more people and signal is a bit weaker... but it could be adowned tower in your area

[Q] 3G Fluctuating issues?

My captivate is always fluctuating between the edge and 3g network. My iPhone never had these fluctuating issues like this phone and ive tested both in the same area's. Is there an explanation or possible fix to have a stronger signal while on AT&T's 3g network?
Short answer, no.
If before you had a solid 3G connection in the area you're having trouble with now, then chances are it will return. Data connections are typically like that and although it may have something to do with the Captivate itself, there's nothing you can do there either. As far as I know, there haven't been any major connection issues with the Captivate. Nothing like Antennagate (The iPhone 4 hassle), at least. AT&T will release updated software and radios in the future, these typically come with better connections. Best recommendation I can give you would be to buy a Wi-Fi router, if you can.

Thanks for the info I already talked to AT&T and they said it should be replaced. So i contacted Amazon wireless, who i upgraded through and they are sending out a new one. I hope this fixes the issue cause this phone is sweet and setting everything up all over again always sucks. Thanks again

HTC ONE Radio Signal

I'm looking for another Android after my Nexus 4 failed me... I've had enough of the poor network connectivity issues (non-network related, I have ATT and other phones on the same plan/network around me connect fine, that sometimes I have to use their phone because mine can't--how lame). I'm trying to find information on HTC radio signal strength. I haven't found any sources regarding testing the radio. Can anyone point me to the right places?

Your best bet is to wait for the review from anandtech as I am sure he goes into quite some length about signal quality which should hopefully help you to make a decision, the mini review is up so hopefully the full review won't be too far behind.
Are you looking at getting the international version or the USA variant? As someone from the USA got the international one and was/is having issues with the signal hopping between 3G and HSPA all the time (see below thread)
