Something strange happened to me today.
The unit lost power, the screen went weird, then the unit shut off.
After charging it when I got home, I wasn't able to boot it; it wouldn't even go into recovery via home & end.
I saw something online where someone suggested trying to go into recovery mode with the keyboard open.
This worked & I wiped & reflashed the SuperBad rom.
What I've come to realize is that my display isn't working at all when the keyboard is slid under the display, or shut - so to speak.
Any ideas? Might there be a 'simple fix' to this that I don't know about?
Also ..
What happens when I close the unit is that a bunch of black lines appear across the display (looking at the unit in Portrait mode).
Looking at the unit in Landscape mode, the lines appear vertically across the screen & the homescreen appears to not rotate, but stays in Portrait mode.

Everyone that I have talked to has said it is a possibility that it is the ribbon cable for the keyboard. The replacement procedure for that is a bit complex (small parts involved) but it is possible to fix. And truth be told, I could also be totally wrong. But you had said that you re-flashed it and it continues the same problem. That sounds more like a hardware issue and less like a software issue.

OK, so I tried taking my Kaiser out of my pocket and it slipped sending the phone, the back cover and the battery in three different directions. I put it back together but it wouldn't switch on. The green light would blink when pressing the power button but nothing more than that.
I checked everything again including the battery contacts which seemed OK, but the contact pins UNDER the battery seemed a bit flat so I repositioned them. I tried again with fingers crossed and thankfully it came back to life.
Everything seems to be working fine except one little thing I noticed. When I bring the phone out of power saving mode, the clock does not update automatically. It just displays the time the screen went black. One touch with the stylus anywhere on the screen will update the clock. To me this seems like a software problem so I am thinking of reflashing but since this issue started after the fall I am also afraid of an underlying hardware problem that could cause unexpected behavior during the flashing process.
Any suggestions or ideas?

i have a similar problem every once in a while that it takes a few seconds to update. best way to answer your question is to flash the stock rom, if it still does it then its hardware.
My friends G1 is unresponsive whenever the screen is closed, but seems to work when sliding it open. The funny thing is, while the device doesn't perform any actions when the screen is closed, it still seems to be responding to touch. When the screen is opened again, your touched actions will "catch up" and the phone responds. This happens from recovery mode as well as in Android.
Can anyone help?

The phone is in standby/sleep mode while screen is off, so you cant use the touch screen. You must double tap Menu to get to the home screen. While in recovery mode you cant use the touch screen cause you have to use the hardware buttons or the trackball. Im guessing you were unaware that the phone goes into sleep mode. When you slide the KB the phone wakes from sleep mode and allows you to use it.You only have to slide it when you need it not just to do it randomly.
No no, sorry if I worded it incorrectly. The screen is on and it is frozen when the slider is closed. Once you open the keyboard, everything works fine. As soon as you slide it in, the screen freezes on its current display and stops updating.

What rom are you using?
If it is a hero rom then it doesnt work while in landscape mode so you cant open the KB while on home.
Its a 2.1 ROM by Kingx
The screen behaves the same in and out of android though...such as in the recovery (JFv1.4) console. If the screen is closed, the screen "freezes", but the frozen picture is still displayed. If you slide the screen ouţand expose the keyboard, it works fine. The phone otherwise operates normally, as does the standby mode.

You need to upgrade your recovery though
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
Try wiping and reinstall the rom and wipe everything. Also you need a task manager cause you might have a billion apps open.
I'll try it on his phone when I get off work. Thanks for the recovery link. Do you prefer this over JF?

JF is super old and lacks many features from Amon_Ra. But it's based off of Cyan 1.4 recovery. It makes a lot of things easier like partitioning, wiping, backup, restoring roms.
Alright,
Home now with his phone. I swapped JF's recovery with RA. The issue still exists, and I'm wondering if it's hardware related...
This is frustrating. I don't know if I can fix it for him...
The problem seems to have gotten worse on its own. If the screen is closed at all, the screen will go black with a slight image shown with what seems to be an unworking backlight. However, upon sliding the keyboard open again, the backlight does not return until the device is rebooted while leaving the keyboard open.
Edit:
The backlight seems to come on sometimes when you slide the screen open...

You might wanna wipe and install another rom to see if the problem stays. There might be a hardware problem with your phone.
I've wiped and tried a couple of other ROMs but the issue persists. If it's a hardware issue, is there anything I can try to fix it?

It could be the ribbon that connects to the display. If you can find the assembly guide you could replace the broken or loose piece. But i'm not 100% on which part of the display needs to be replaced. You could ask someone at T-Mobile or at a electronics store what the problem is.HTC offers a free 2yr warranty so you might be able to get a replacement.
Bumping this to see if this was ever resolved. Having the same issue, and considering replacing it brand new, but wanted to know what exactly needs to be replaced so I can order it.
I don't know when it started but I'm quite sure that I used to be able to use the touchscreen with the keyboard extended. I am running the latest hboot and radio with the cyanogen nightlies and newest pershoot kernel.
Is anybody have this problem?
Perhaps I just need to reflash radio and hboot but its weird because it works fine with the keyboard closed.
Thanks for your help.

Your definitely supposed to be able to use the touchscreen when the keyboards out, That's how I use my phone most of the time. I think it's a hardware problem to me like some cable to the touchscreen got messed up so when you open up your keyboard it gets disconnected, but I really don't know could be wrong. Also, I don't see how reflashing hboot or the radio will fix it, as far as I know they don't affect the touchscreen at all.

As "Ianlikescake" Said its hardware not software. I work in a second hand phone shop & the most common problem with the G1 (Apart from people abusing this beautiful device) is a ribbon cable tears in the back when the screen has been opened & closed a lot.
Normally when it goes the touch screen goes completely but we have had one customer when the same thing happened to him as in your situation, We sent the phone off to be repaired & all they did was replace the cable
So re flashing the radio & hboot wont fix it, Sorry!

My phone has a problem not really similar but it still has to do with the screen. When i lock the phone and when I try to unlock it when the screen is down the screen doesn't turn on. But when I flip the screen up the screen turns on. Once I unlock the phone the screen works fine i flip it back down and it works untill it locks. So do you think it's a problem with the ribbon cable?

I think I have a similar issue. Whenever I have the keyboard closed, the screen will not turn on when you press the end-key. Only the LED lights will turn on. When you flip the keyboard out, the screen turns on and the phone is functional.
Over the next few weeks, I then realized that this only happens when the phone's keyboard is completely closed. If you leave the keyboard out 1cm or so (to the point where you can only see the spacebar), you can turn on the phone. Check to see if it works for you.

That used to work for me but now the problem got worse. Sometimes even when the keyboards out the screen doesn't turn on so I have to mess with the screen for a little bit till it works. Now I know it's the cable that's messed up. I think the reason it's like this is from repetitive flipping out the screen. I gotta be more careful next time if i can fix it.
I recently installed CM 10.1.2 Stable and it was working fine until about a week ago - great work, thanks to the Devs.
The problem that I am having is that the home screen and drawer is locked in portrait mode. I have tried EVERY setting I could find and it only stays on portrait. All the other apps stay in landscape when rotation lock is on (my preferred usage mode) with the exception of the dialer and the lock screen. The only time the home screen behaves is when I put the device in it's car dock - THEN it orients correctly.
The actual events right before it went wonky are as follows:
1) I was using it in the car dock, turned off the vehicle, and removed it. The lock screen seemed to be taking it's time orienting.
2) While I was fumbling with it I dropped it on the corner closest to the USB port (I know, normally it's in an Otterbox but I had just pulled it out of the car). It also got a little moisture on it, but none appeared to penetrate.
3) After I dropped it, everything was stuck in portrait mode - all apps, etc.
4) I restarted, and then did a cold boot, and it got to where I am now.
I have tried reinstalling CM, and various combinations of car dock/rotate settings but I'm baffled. It is my understanding that the accellerometers might cause bad rotation behavior, but it doesn't affect the other apps. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
R

If that happened after your dropped it, you can try to recalibrate the accellerometer (if that's still an option on the cappy).
If that doesn't work, you can always try to flash stock odin KK4 without bootloaders (after a backup of course). But my guess is that it's hardware related so flashing won't change much.
If all fails, you can contact Josh @ mobiletechvideos.com. He's well known around here for fixing cappys.
Now there is another long topic on freezing, but its basically about 10seconds freeze , then things normal and stuff. Mine is different so I made a new topic.
Have sprint note. On Marshmellow now but happened on Lollipop as well.
The problem is:
After several hours of use, or may even a day, the phone just freezes....partly. Let me explain. Basically if you touch anywhere on the screen, it won't register the touch. If you hit the hard recents button, it'll show recents, but you can't click any program (it doesn't register your touch). When it first happened I thought I needed a new screen, but quickly found out I probably don't: If I hit the nav bar, it will pull down full screen, and if I have it full of notifications, I can click any of the notifications, whether its near the top, middle, or bottom, and it registers the touch and sends me to the app. But then again, at that app, the screen doesn't register. Even if I touch in the same place on the screen where I clicked the notification that sent me to the app. But the nav bar still works. It recognizes the touch, and will pull down full screen, and I can click anywhere on the screen and my touch will register. Also if I hold the power button and the reboot options come up (which on mine has option from top down to bottom, I can click any option on the screen, and it will register my touch. But if I hit the home button, the whole screen is non responsive. So I have a partial freeze. The whole screen doesn't work, but then the whole screen will work when I pull the nav bar down, so im totally confused. I already tried usually differnt launchers, but same thing, after while, screen will be non responsive
If I reboot then everything works fine and normal, so I doubt its a screen issue. Because if its broke its broke. Also tried a hard reset, problem still came back. I guess it may be an app clashing problem but I have over 100 apps it could be any one of them
Has anybody experienced something similar?
I had a buddy give me an LG Lucid3 that had a similar issue... It actually got worse over time and the touchscreen totally stopped working. (He thought) I took it apart and actually the connection was good. Put it back together and just kept rebooting it multiple times in a row. Finally, the touch started to work a little an for some reason I thought to go and download an antivirus program. The phone had 11. Got rid of them and phone has been working fine for a couple weeks now. Idk if that's your problem but I figured I'd share this experience because I've never seen anything like it.
