Hey everybody. I'm very new to Android and have been using the iPhone the past 3 years. I bought an iPhone 4 a month ago off an upgrade from my 3G at the Apple Store. I would like to switch to the Samsung Captivate. What is the best way to do this? Can I use the Captivate on the same 2-year contract? And are you former-iPhone users happy you made the switch? Thanks guy. This is an awesome site and even though I haven't had an Android device I follow this forum and can't wait to put all the sweet mods on my Captivate to make it much faster than the iPhone!
Captivate
Yes I had the iPhone 4 I return it and purchased the Samsung captivate I am much happier with the Samsung captivate over the iPhone 4 the fact that you can change everything on the phone is awesome you can have a custom launcher custom icon and a custom lock screen *in my opinion the samsung captivate is far superior to the iPhone 4*
i believe you have to do it within 30 days.
If you're willing to pay full price for the Captivate, yes you can use it with your current data plan. You can call AT&T and have them change it to the non-iPhone plan or just have the sales guy do it at the store...but I'm pretty sure they cost the same.
As far as being happy I made the switch...hell yes. I couldn't stand the restrictions that had been placed on the iOS software. It annoyed me to no end that in order to simply change the colors of something, or move icons around I had to circumvent security measures that had been put in place (jailbreaking)...which then led to a ferocious battle with an Apple "Genius" who physically broke my phone while "repairing" it and then blamed the USB hardware error on my jailbreaking software, and Apple sending me to a different Apple store to get a refurbished phone as I called and confirmed that the hardware error I was getting could NOT be caused by jailbreaking. I'd had enough. Not to mention everyone in an Apple store at any given time looks like a hardcore douche.
I love the openness of Android. I had a G1 back in the day but broke it, and didn't have enough money to buy a new one...but I had a contract renewal with ATT which is how I ended up with an iPhone. It feels great to be able to do whatever I want with my phone. I thoroughly enjoy learning about the inner workings of Android and flashing different ROMs, etc.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I think I'm going to be happy switching to the Android. Another question - what about music? How does that work with the Android devices. I know it's based off an expandable SD card, but is there like an iTunes alternative to sync my music and transfer the music? Also, once I do the switch I am definetely going to root the device and apply one of the new Roms that take the AT&T crap out and make it run faster. I am VERY familiar with jailbreaking the iPhone, I have been doing it ever since 2.2.1. Is it as easy to learn how to root as it is to jailbreaking? Thanks guys
syncing music
There's an app called DoubleTwist that's supposed to be equivalent to what iTunes would do on the iPhone (without the store, anyway.) I've tried it but haven't had a lot of luck yet...probably due to peculiarities in my environment.
If you know where the media files are supposed to go on the device, it should be as simple as copying them to it over USB.
The Captivate does come with 16 GB on its "internal SD card," so the SD card is optional for that
you can download music directly to your phone and save the hassle of syncing with at computer..
and best part is most of the time its free, but there really isn't much of a market yet, but you can download any mp3 file you wanted and its not tied down to iTunes.
Thanks for all the answers guys. I will look into Doubletwist. Also, last question lol (I promise) - I love the look of plain regular Vannila Android, is it possible to get that on a Captivate?

Not yet. But you can use an alternative home screen program such as ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro. These programs run on top of your operating system and changer the user interface to pretty much anything you want
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had an iphone 3G, 3GS and 4. The Captivate is a better device than all of them in almost every regard. The only things that the iPhone 4 has over the Samsung Captivate are:
Better Camera with Flash
Working GPS
Better games (my opinion)
Better music player UI
You can get a few different launchers for the Captivate that work pretty well. I use LauncherPro. It's not stock Android but it gets rid of a lot of the TouchWiz.
And it's very customizable.
I am happy with the switch to Android. If I don't keep it it's only due to the GPS issues and I will move on to a different Android device.

I was with you up until the games (which I understood to be an opinion) and the Music UI. In my opinion the music app that samsung provides is more than adequate and considering the controls in the lockscreen with the slide down disc to change songs and in the notification bar. Not too mention the array of EQ features and 5.1 channel output it definitely trumps the iphone.
But of course that is subjective
I am about to come back to the captivate from the iphone 4. I always go back to the iphone to stop my love for hacking and modifying the phones general purpose. The captivate is a great phone on att as far as android goes. The ui helps alot of iphone users to adjust for the simple fact that it mimics ios. You know I did go back to the iphone this last time because I got my captivate cheap on craigslist and made a killin to buy an iphone outright. I got the iphone 4 because of flash and front facing camera. After a month with it Ive just come to the conclusion that I dont even like the flash and I dont use face time enough to justify the cause. I really wish I had sprint cause my ideal device is the evo(led notify and front camera) but I get a great deal through work with att so the captivate is just a better 3GS IMO!

First of all I don't take well to condescension. So I'm not "smoking" anything. Subjective being the key word, I prefer playing emulators of games I like with the gba/psx emulator rather than cutesy games about cooking or herding sheep. Just me
I also had the iPhone 4(returned it also), as well as every other iPhone...So after 3+ years of ios and iPhones, Im very happy I made the switch to android and the captivate and will never go back.
When I did have my iPhones and ios I had them jailbroken...and I still think Android and the captivate is mucher better. Stock vs stock and rooted vs jailbroken!
One really big thing that I like and enjoy android so much more is the community! Android people are awesome and always wiling to help out!!!
try zeam also both lp an adw are good but zeam is light and simple

was an interesting read....and i feel i've been through the same cycle! one very distinct feeling is why the device doesnt behave the way its defined on paper. with all the specs, the galaxy s should literally be flying, but somehow isnt the case.....its most probably the file system, or who knows could be lack of optimization from samsung's side on the drivers or adaptation.
Froyo update comes with a load of expectations and i must say im not as excited as i hoped to be with the leaked builds. they seem very mediocre in terms of what was expected. seems more like a features update build rather than a build aimed at really "stepping up the game" by bringing in some real optimizations and performance enhancements.
anyway, only time will tell and i hope samsung will do a good job in keeping this huge fanbase that they've created happy!
I have the same feeling with you my friend only a little bit worse.
I'm almost disappointed from my decision in buying this phone. My previous phones were HTC diamond and HTC HD2 which I still have and apart from the screen which is obviously better in galaxy s, android and the processor everything else is worse compared with HD2 and if you see here the first video for desire HD I believe you will also have the same feeling.
The software that comes with galaxy S is very poor and even useless (worse than OEM). I have the phone for a month now and I have deleted nearly everything that samsung has to offer and still haven't decided what widgets to put in my screen. Wouldn't have this problem with HTC sense.
Another thing that I'm very disappointed and I don't see anyone talking about it is the crappy camera which although the video is very good, when you try to take a picture (in good light conditions) and zoom a little bit on that picture you'll see that picture quality is very low and you could only compare it to a 2MP picture. (Its the worse camera I've ever seen, even diamond with 3,2MP camera took better pictures).
Also I can't believe that a multi national corporation like samsung cannot come up with a fix for the GPS and get rid of RFS. I'm using now JPH and I can tell you that lagfix is a must. (I think they don't care)
I new that samsung's phones (look Omnia and Omnia 2) were not to good softwarewise, but I bought this phone because I had no other choice as I could not compare it to desire at that time. Now I think it would be better if I bought desire.
This is definitely the only samsung phone I'll ever own and won't bother to look again in what samsung has to offer even if it had a quad core processor.
I hope I was not too boring and if someone has a different opinion I would love to hear it.
it took 6 weeks to get my phone back from repair >.<
In my case I started off needing a new phone badly, as in Now! immediately, as my last HTC phone was on its last legs, the fault was not hardware but Windows Mobile, I just couldn't stand the crap any more.
So, I decided I'll bodly go where no human under the reign of Microsoft has gone before, and found HTC Desire it was all cool and nice, until i started to see the huge list of defects and all the bugs it had, it felt like a mirage in a desert..
Meanwhile searching for bugs fixes and ways to patch up the HTC Desire i came up to this sweeeeeeet review comparison of Desire vs. Galaxy S (all links on my siggy), and i simply ran back to the store and demanded an exchange and i grabbed the Galaxy S. it was the i9000 UK model (3 button working), it was on its early incarnation of crappy ROMs, but the ROM "releases" leaked ROM we so often that it kept me fun and entertained for a few weeks, the GPS was not a total disaster, it at least was able to get a lock under 30sec accuracy was horrible though, with each passing firmware seemed it got better, then Bell Canada announced a NAM version of the SGS i couldn't be happier, quickly i setup a local Ad to sell the UK version, and picked up the Galaxy S Vibrant i9000m, joy joy joy
Because now i can get 3G every where, with the UK version i was only getting 3G on surface level or places close to windows.
Unfortunately a bad trade off, to my dismay i found this unit had the 3 buttons disabled, and that week was leaked the Froyo firmware, and i decided to flash it even with the 3 button disabled phone.... "i have a feeling" (BEP).... and yeap surely enough my guts were right, the damn flash pouched and it failed, and i got the horrible phone-!-pc screen looking at me.
nothing i could do, so i had to return the phone the 2nd day it was released they ran out of new units, as it was the 2nd day of the launch day in Canada, and i did not see it until 6 weeks later.
before i killed it with froyo i did get a chance to play around a bit with the GPS on JG9 and it was waaaay better than the UK version of the phone accuracy was pretty close, it was not jumping all over the place, that was a huge improvement from my point of view.
so after sending my brand new 1 day old SGS back to repair, i had to fall back to my arch nemesis HTC running Microsoft demons... 3 days later i got fed up again and set myself on a new quest and hit every single store carrying the Bell SGS, and testing every phone i was able to and finally after the 5th day i found a unit that had the 3 buttons enable.
bought it right away, ran home quickly upgraded it to JH2 and unlocked it... it was a major relieve.
and since then i've been reaping in the rewards and now i have over 410+ apps installed according to my AppBrain Sync account.
and i learned to keep the bootup process, first thing i did was to remove the media scan
then each time i installed a new app i'll open my Boot manager app and kill anything new added to the boot list
just doing that alone, it was enough to keep the phone running stock without the need of the much feared One Click Lag fix, which i've been reading it's causing more problem than what it solves specially for people running the Vibrant models.
GPS in JH2 was magnificent it gets quick locks in 5~10 sec vs. 10~30 sec on JG9 accuracy is about the same, depends on weather/area and also the sampling rate configure to use on the GPS app.
So in the irony of things this is the first phone that have ever lived up to my expectations.
i can really be in a conversation in middle of a street, some one would ask me something, and i can now easily pull out the answer from the SGS in seconds, browsing is so quick and fast, apps are fast, everything i need to look up runs as soon as i click it.
this is what mobile information is supposed to be, available immediately at your fingertips.
the camera is awesome, takes great picture in day and night, my old HTC phones picture quality were not as good.
and the best thing is i can truely work mobile now, i can have all my 10+ IM accounts online 7+ emails accounts active, lots of great apps for scheduling and alerts
and i can remote in to office/home/clients via RDP and VNC and FTP and SSH and whatever else they happens to be running and do my work from any where i happen to be standing by.
Oh! best of all, i can now be all the time on XDA on my favorite browser... still not used to the XDA App it's not as natural
Good job Samsung

I'm not affiliated in any way or manner with Samsung or Bell or anybody else, i was not one of the lucky one that got the free phone, i actually quite pissed they took 6 weeks to repair my first phone, and making my purchase a 2nd phone.
but that was Bell fault not Samsung, but Samsung is at fault too for listening to Bell and disabling the 3 button mode to prevent us from unlocking the phone and rooting the phone
which by the way we only did it in 3 weeks time, it serves you right Bell

Call me a phone freak, but it's not true. I made a chart of the phones I had since I was 11 till now that I am 17(Btw I got my first phone when I was 6 in 1999, which i found, im not spoiled.). If I am not mistaking I had 13 Phones Till now since 2005, and 9 Of them from 2010-2011. Again, I'm no phone freak, I don't text alot, I dont use that teen bbm ****, I only have these smartphones for entertainment and web browsing and music. Mostly it's the entertainment that I need to have in class, because if I can't find a good addictive game that I could play with in class. I will go crazy. If you notice in the chart I had all iPhones except the iPhone 4, Which is the next phone in my eyes. Even though I think that Android is 1000 times better than iphone I just CAAAAAAAAAAAAANT handle the battery power. Where I go to school from 7am to 12:01 pm I already lose 50% Battery.

Altough I AM going to lose 3g since I am on t-mobile, I need to have those creative like OSMOS, AOZ, etc. Which android really lacks or has a cheap ported version which carshes all the time.
WHAT DO I NEED HSPA+ OR 3G FOR IF I CAN ONLY USE IT FOR 4 HOURS?
I can certainly tell you're in no way a nerd. You've called at least one of the best phones of all time "CRAP CRAP CRAP PERIOD." If you learned how to better use the devices you might experience much better performance out of them.
lol I installed about 8 different ROMS on the HD2, I was then introduced to android through the android ROM on the HD2 which is when I fell in love with android, and it was still terrible, I had it for a few months and the number of bugs were just getting larger and larger. I gave up on that phone because WP6.5 Is terrible, no matter how much you try to exploit it, and android was very buggy on it. Android for me is the best OS, but it has no battery life, which kills it for me. I will go back for it if i get the iPhone 4 because I know that better android phones will come out.

Oh I know android has just terrible battery life. I doubt that will ever improve unless phones become the size of the old saved by the bell phones. I won't touch android anymore to be honest. I did enjoy WM in it's very vanilla form but it had to be heavily customized to my liking. The HD2 was good because I could try any phone OS I wanted which led me to WP7. After picking up an HD7 I fell in love. The battery life on that particular device (as well as all other HTC devices) is not so hot but once I switched to the samsung, LG, and Dell WP7 products I was thoroughly impressed. No HTC has good battery life without an extended battery. The phones however weren't bad until they started re-releasing the same phone over and over withonly slightly improved specs (dual core processor/front facing camera) It sucks that now they're pretty much just releasing the HD2 over and over again with lower build quality and better specs.
I agree.
The HD2 is the best smartphone of all time. Period.
Dude, I don't know if you know, but any phone, regardless of the manufacturer, has terrible battery life if all your gonna do is play full 3D games for the whole school day. You just can't expect your phone to last the day with that sort of use. And that's why extended batteries were invented...
I play games in class also, but dude, how do you learn?

But remember, the new android phones are more powerful which equals greater battery draw, especially with full 3D games.

I actually take back saying HD2 is purely crap. But its definetely not the best. It all comes to personal choice, Some say android is the best, some say iOS is, some (very few) saw WM6.5 is the best. WP7 has nothing to do with this, I never said its bad so do not include it and the HD2's caliber because iphone 3g can run android does that make it the best phone for an android lover? I doubt it. Extended batteries are too bulky there is a reason why I want my phone to be very thin.
And regarding that school thing, I barely go to classes, barely wake up to go to school, and my average is 88.56. Kind of surprising but thats how I am high school is easy (I am a junior btw). School in NYC is very easy believe me

the HD2 is the best phone because its the most versatile of all phones... it could be a whole big argument, but let's not get into it.
The iPhone can't run Android. In that I mean, you can't use Android on the iPhone as a daily driver.
Not all extended batteries are bulky. Good example is the G2, it has extended batteries that fit in the stock cover.
Ohh, I see. I'm in Minnesota.... so our curriculum is definitely tougher. I'm a senior.

You are going to waste your money on an iPhone 4 unless you can find one with the old iOS version it had on it when it first came out because if I'm not mistake, while the newest iOS software has a jailbreak for it I believe there still hasn't been an "unlock" released for it so you won't be able to use it on T-Mobile. So on that note, I'll sell you mine for $500 if you have money to waste like that.

Now i do see some post where you are asking legit questions. So i'll play nice. Those seem pretty troolish.
I have a MT4G and yes, the battery life does kind of suck. But the phone itself is still amazing and the battery is easy to pop out and replace. So I bought 3 extra batteries and a standalone charger off of ebay for like $14 or so. I just always keep 3 batteries fully charged and swap em out. Problem solved.
if you have to do that to stay charged something is wrong
as far as the OP goes, I almost agree. However, the HD2 is a flavor that is different. I had one. My battery in windows mobile by about april was easily 18-22 hours on moderate - heavy use. Perhaps the major problem is that you're in high school and want to match your friends who also are walking contradictions of an apple repetitive machine? And if that's the case, perfectly well. But it would make you a sheep...
And while it is very good to say that you're a junior and coasting through your classes, can you honestly say the same in college or grad school? What is your class schedule? Scholars/AP courses? Heck even honors courses? If not, what a waste of space...
But you really didn't give an opinion besides battery life. I like that my dvp can go 2 and a half days (without tweaks) on moderate to heavy usage. I can understand the charm of the iphone (actually no I can't understand it), but I can say it is the definition of status. Meh well...
Go read a book junior...

Android OS:
I love the apps, I love the hardware but the Software to me and it's user experience is so half-done to me. They have amazing hardware and it seems
like Android users settle for that just because they await root to fix an issue
they have...I prefer out of box, everything to work near perfectly. Battery life
has never been an issue. I am heavy user so i expect low battery life.
IOS:
I despise itunes...Even though I love Apple's products. They have the best hardware and a decent experience but Itunes really kills this OS for me. I could
care less about it being closed
Webos:
Horrible hardware, But THE BEST OPERATING SYSTEM I HAVE USED TO DATE. Honestly, I am willing to suffer through the horrible hardware they produce
because the user experience of Webos is amazing with the cards and just
fluidity of it. Love love love, webos but hate any hardware that holds it.
Windows Phone 7:
My favorite and in my opinion best hardware+software/user experience. Yes, Zune is required to Sync pics and what not but it is not as annoying as itunes.
It is definitely more fluid than Android. It lacks multi-tasking, yes but it has a quick restart time for each app. Xbox live integration is great, Social networking is great and the user experience is great. No lag, No having to make sure to delete the cache or make sure this app is closed or that app is closed like on Android. It lacks the customization of android but in reality, i dont need 500 widgets crowding my screen up. I am content with my live tiles and 2 screens.
Battery life is what it is. If you are a power user of course it will die earlier. My friend has a droid x and never actually does anything with it except an occasional text and phone call and gets 30 hours or more.
I text all the time(2000+ daily), I am listening to music, Video chatting or calling someone or just playing a game or watching netflix...I am lucky if i can get 4 hours out of my phone.
And ignore the comments about you being a troll or about your age
LOL people really do not like to hear when you disagree or talk about
their phones. For some reason, it is really important to them like a child.
I do see what you mean. I do tend to get a much better battery life
out of Windows phone 7 and IOS than i do android(most)

I have a MT4G and yes, the battery life does kind of suck. But the phone itself is still amazing and the battery is easy to pop out and replace. So I bought 3 extra batteries and a standalone charger off of ebay for like $14 or so. I just always keep 3 batteries fully charged and swap em out. Problem solved.

OP, I've got the perfect solution to your battery woes. You can either do like the kid I quoted and by multiple batteries to swap out or, since you seem to be rolling in money and have had a multitude of cell phones you can do like me...
...and instead of buying multiple batteries, buy multiple phones to swap out during the day. ^^^
That's 2 G1's (one is broken) 2 Nexus One's, a Vibrant, a MT4G, the HD7 (I only use that one if I wanna watch Netflix because I found out the hard way that Windows Phone 7 OS sucks ass) and the iPhone 4. (I bought it for ****s and giggles. Never activated it but I did jailbreak it so I use it for the games and music player) Problem solved!
Alright guys lets start with the fact that you guys cannot say I am wrong about the HD2, because of the reason that it is MY opinion. There is nothing wrong about that. I already stated in previous posts that it's all about personal choice. It's just something about me (and I think everyone else) that when I want a certain object in the first 5 mins (Car, Phone, computer, console, etc.) almost nothing can stop that turn on that I have for the next few weeks. If I have 1 cent in my pocket I will go out of my way and find a way to achieve that amount in a very short period of time (no physical work, no begging). Anyway I am getting a lil off topic... What I am saying is that I just walked outside to work out with 100% battery on my phone. After 4 hours of making only about five 2 minute calls and one text, connected to edge, stock MT4G rom. No music, no browsing, nothing. Guess how much battery I had left? 48 ****ing percent. I took a shower and 40 minutes later I have 38% left.
Again, I LOVE android, but the battery kills it for me. Now my stance on WP7? Its interface is great, I researched it a little, I used it a little, but the lack of a large app market kills it for me. Many features are there, but many are missing. I love the WP7 interface, and it looks better than any other OS there, but I know I will get bored of it since I am not going to buy a phone just because of the way it looks.
And calling me spoiled? Never was never will be. Addicted to phones? Never was never will be. Want to have something that could entertain me and last long? Definetely. I know even with an iPhone 4 I will get bored with it. I need change in my life, I'm one of these people who would have a Lamborghini and after two years would have to change it, even if I have to downgrade.
carmeng4evr, you are a little spoiled, and I thought I have alot of phones.
domineus, I have 1 AP class, 3 Honors class, coming to school without a notebook, getting 90+ on every test, getting yelled at for not copying notes, fighting alot in school. Never touched a cig or marijuana in my life. Didn't drink more than 5 mg of alcohol in my entire life (considering one shot of vodka contains atleast 25 mg of liquid, correct me if I am wrong). I never asked for a penny from my parents to buy any gadgets or clothes or just about anything since I was 13. I am a Hair cutter (9 months), web designer, small time stock investor (With my older brother), Phone repairman and dealer, and a graphic designer. That's a little bit of my personality, so you won't say I'm spoiled.
julez456, whatta show off... believe me I don't have more than one or two (which I had only for a short period of time) High-end smartphones at the same time. I sell and buy constantly.
darinmc, You seriously made my day, I laughed for 5 minutes at the shortest post in this thread.
I WILL OBVIOUSLY SELL MY MT4G FOR ATLEAST 350 BEFORE BUYING A $500 (UNLOCKED) IPHONE 4.
Hello my friends !
Anyone knows if flash feature is coming with mango?
Thank you
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
highly doubtful since they are going all about HTML5 video on the web which is better in many ways.
but flash, your better off asking adobe for that answer.
hey maybe since so many API's are going to be released with mango maybe someone will make a plug-in for internet explorer or maybe also make a browser app that comes included with flash allready.
but with flash on the phone you really only want to use it with videos and some vids allready work on the phone since you have youtube for those type of videos, or you can do like i do sometimes.
i watch some revision3 videos and they have links to download the videos and i tap on the download on the video and it plays it automatically.
it briefly shows cannot download file for less than a sec. then it plays the video like any other video.
I would need flash not for playing video but to use websites flash made

Adobe has confirmed that Flash will be coming to WP7. The main question is when. Probably after Mango as right now IE doesn't have plug-in support & HOPEFULLY that'll come with Mango. Just Google "Adobe Flash WP7" & you'll see multiple articles stating this.
Thank you i will check google

It amazes me that people still go on about Flash on smartphones. Everyone slagged off Apple for not doing it on the iPhone but they have been proven right because Adobe have never released a version that runs well, even four years later.
If you really want Flash, get an Android phone and watch it go all slow and laggy when you hit a page with Flash content. It's just not worth the hassle.

I've never had a problem on an android phone with flash. Never had any lag what so ever. As long as the phone has the hardware to run it, it will not lag. This includes flash enabled websites. I had an HD2 and a MT4G with flash and they ran just fine with no lag on flash videos or flash enabled websites. And the HD7 has the hardware and capability to run flash and flash enabled content just fine without any lag.

Lmfao! The whole OS is littered with lag, especially the browser. Flash only makes it worse. Android is fast but not fluid which are two very different things, and when you compare it to iOS or WP7, it doesn't compare. Once I experienced the fluidity of Windows Phone, I knew I would never look back to Android again. As for flash within IE9/10 that's a good question and Microsoft said they have no immediate plans to support it but the majority of that responsibility really lies on Adobe so... As far as is currently known, there is no support coming for it. What I'd like to know is; would there be any adverse effects on browser performance like on Android.
Flash doesnt load on android anymore =]

Again, I'll say that I never had any lag with Android when I had it on the HD2 I had or on the MT4G I had. And they where both fast and lag free. Maybe because I used custom builds of Android that were built to be fast and lag free. Yes stock Android on most devices does have lag, even on the MT4G but once you root it and use a custom build that has all the junk removed, then it becomes fast and lag free. I'm not saying it's better than WP7 as I own a HD7, I like both for Android and WP7, I'm just saying that each os has it's pros and cons. So with that being said, if you have a good solid stable build of Android, then it doesn't lag with flash. And yes, only Adobe knows when they will have flash ready for WP7, so until then, we'll just have to be patient.

No lag ever? Good for you. I used to have a Droid running CM7 and one day just got fed up with having to tweak everything to get it the way I wanted so much so that I was in recovery mode probably more than actually using it as a phone. It still lagged but I guess you could chock that one up to aged hardware, anyways I ended up throwing it at the wall hard enough to break the screen and the rest of the phone along with it and pretty much just said **** Android and **** Google they obviously don't know how to listen to their followers as people have been asking for some form of hardware acceleration to aid the lag since I don't know how long. Having to resort to custom ROMs to aid an issue that should've been fixed long ago is absolutely not an enjoyable experience for the average consumer. Oh and I just remembered, since IE mobile doesn't support plug-ins (I didn't hear anything about it for IE9 either) it's still up to Microsoft...
I call BS, I had a HD2, and tried literlly every Android rom I could find, SD and NAND version, yes some ran fast, but they all lag to some extent, and the browser is allways jumpy. Not that it was unusable by compared to iOS or WP7 the browser experiance is horrible. Its capable of doing more, but at the same time it is far more frustrating to use.

Where did you here that? One guy asked, "Can you talk about Flash support?" The MS guy said, "No talk about Flash support." In other words, they didn't want to give an official statement. That is a big difference between not talking about it & saying it's not coming.
So the questions is, are we going to support Flash in IE9 for Windows Phone
We are working with Adobe, but it has not yet been decided the last time I checked--part of that is Adobe is doing what they have to do and we're doing what we have to do. The last I checked the team is working with them but I don't think they have any announcement whether it's going to definitely work or not.

Feeler thread for rom idea/ questions on developing from a complete noob.
MP3 DROID
Like many I have moved on from the og droid.
Like many I use the og droid as strictly mp3 and media.
just a modified rom to work best as a mp3 player. i have been working on perfecting the art of music player on my droid for a while now and I want to share my results. i think i came up with a wining combination of mods, apps, and software removals.
I want to share that sucess but I am a complete noob.
I just want to do something like nlite for windows. I want to do some basic things to a existing rom..
what kitchen is recomended? I have read many noobie guides and stuff and I am not strong on coding.. I took c+ years ago. and only used to dable in cgi and html. what is a good guide for this kind of undertaking?
can some one help me with this. The droid is dead. the mp3 droid will not be dead.

SO mp3 droid is ...
goals.
battle the low ram capacity of the phone.
.no frills or flashy eye candy. simple. modern and so fast. insane fast. you are going to wish the og droid performed like this as a phone!
.so quick and easy that the interface resembles an ipod and anyone from monkeys to grandmas will be able to easily play music.
.batter life? whats that. holy gosh forgetting to charge is not a big deal anymore?
plans / planned
based off of a extreemly fast and stable FROYO version of bugless beast from pete. http://www.peteralfonso.com/
Chevy nova kernel ultra low volt 900 stock with slight modification
all non esential apks removed! I have gutted 70% and this phone blazes!(this makes the big dif in speed)
all phone essential services disabled and striped.
airplane mode with wifi.
only one screen on the launcher (launcher will be zeeam for sure (uses least ram)
higher dpi than stock.
no app drawer
no lock screen
music widget (froyomusic mod) takes up 3 out of 4 rows.
4th row (launcher bar) will list all the apps (will come with rockbox, music mod, album art catcher, opera beta, maybe sticher, listen, tunein radio. I am open to any suggestions that will give the best music experience. streamin google player is obviously out due to most peoples droids not having 3g data. I have tried a lot of music players. music mod is the best on this platform on this device. i would love double twist or winamp but double twist has issues and winamp is just a horrible linux port that will eat up your droids ram like a cookie monster on steroids.
in essence this is the main version of mp3 droid. just a modified rom to work best as a mp3 player. i have been working on perfecting the art of music player on my droid for a while now and I want to share my results. i think i came up with a wining combination of mods, apps, and software removals.
version 2 will be
bb (any fast rom) even more super lightened.
ROCK BOX http://www.rockbox.org/
will be the only thing that will run. on top of the rom.
it will run from boot of rom
essentially a ported rock box player ported as the main os
of course it would make me a lot happier to not even use android at all and get a bootable version of rockbox working on this device. rock box is open source and works on a lot of devices I just dont know what this would entail.
video.

sorry for sideways and quality. lack there of. apologize for my sleepiness as well. overall sorry video. but good rendition of speed i am acheiving with the setup.

That actually does look quite fast. While I can't help you with developing a ROM, I can tell you it would be helpful to the rest of us if you told us what exactly you did... Looks fantastic
Indeed. it is extremely fast. the video does not even do it justice. I have never seen the og droid perform like this.
as far as what i have done the general idea is in my first post and a detailed walk through will follow shortly.
i will def post a detailed version of what i have done but it comes down to pretty much trial and error
well thats the definition of what i have done and plan to get ironed out into a rom. i have taken all the guess work out of finding the speediest apps, roms, kernels, home screens, etc,
i removed as many things as i could from the device that did not sacrafice reliablity or stability.
i am runing an older version of bugless beast. trial and error has shown this version to perform best on multiple droid 1s
i am running the newer chevy nova kernel 1000 ul clocked at 900.
i have lightened the phone by about 70 % will provide list or possibly a script or both of what apps you can safely remove.. afik
and I am running zeam with settings that provide the least ram usage
1 home screen
no visual effects
full screen.
everything i have done has been centered around increasing ram numbers.s
disabled data.
disabled 3g
set up airplane mode with wifi
removed lock screen
installed rock box port
running stock rom music player which is foryo music mod
said widget.
modified build.prop
higher dpi think i settled on 280
camera button is a hardware play/pause music button (buggy at the moment)
anyway like i said i will post full details so you can do this
or you can wait for the rom.
might be a while
progress with the rom is
downloaded android sdk
donloaded virtual box
instaled ubuntu
(i am runing dual boot laptop with Ubuntu really have started falling in love with vm since i tried out chrome os and os x lepord. i like how you can quickly pop into windows if you need to and its nice that you can setup a shared clipboard)
installed java
messed around with rockbox to see what you can customize visualy.
read about a few kitchens and reading up on how to compile your own rom as well as virtual device testing etc.
this is a diy learn as you go process so might be a while till u see an alpha.
I'd be willing to test this when you have a version available for download. I don't use my Droid for service, just as an iPod pretty much, so this would work great for me.
i would also be willing to test. i moved to a evo 3d but still have the og droid. this looks amazingly fast.

Yes. I am suprised no one has started this project already. I wonder what percent of og users still use it as their everyday phone.
Well stay tuned and i will get a alpha up as soon as i figure stuff out.
Cool, I am excited to test this!
Also, do you think it'd be possible for you to make a flashable .zip or something that one could flash to almost any ROM on the Droid and remove all the phone related stuff and other bloat? [ I hope I don't sound demanding, it's just an idea I had, and unfortunately I don't have the skills to do it myself ]
I ask because while I like the MP3 Droid idea, there are some things I want to keep that are being taken out. Like, not too bare, but not loaded with unnecessary things either, you get what I mean?
I'm also interested in this rom!

This looks great
I gave my OG to my little bro since I upgraded to the rezound and I'm sure he'll love this.
Sounds awesome so far. I've been messing with my OG as an mp3 player since I got my GalaxyNexus.
I loaded PE 4.2 and stripped out a lot of non essential items. I've been experimenting with the different music players so see which works best.
I would also be willing to be an alpha or beta tester for you.
I've rooted, flashed and tweaked my OG since the first week I've had it. It has been the same with my Xoom and Nexus. I'm confident enough that I've rooted and flashed many other devices for family and friends.
I've had offers from people to buy my Droid, but I just can't part with it. It will in my opinion be one of the best phones ever made.
So any help I can give is yours.
I would be willing to help with this where I can. I am not a developer, but I can do some basic things. Could definitely help creating a .zip for people to flash with everything removed/added/customized.
I want see this happen so badly. I'm using my Droid as a desk clock to play music. I am running a FroYo Bugless Beast with everything stripped except Settings, Market, SuperUser. From there I installed beautiful Widgets, Pandora, and Play Music.
Let me know if you need anything at all. Please make this happen!
Looks amazing!
By the way this is the current home screen on my D1.
Running Steel Droid 10 right now with Zeam Launcher. Now only if I can find an way to remove the phone signal on the status bar then it would be nearly perfect.
Just a suggestion, but it might be worthwhile to checkout deadbeef as well.
This is an awesome idea and exactly what I was looking for! I recently remosefully upgraded my phone to the Bionic (which I am quite pleased with) but, like everyone else on this thread, have no intentions of letting go of my Droid Classic. An MP3 player-type device (with GPS - tre' cool!) would be pretty awesome. So, if I can help with testing, whatever, I'm definitely up for that! Except for that annoyingly small amount of RAM issue, the Droid Classic (as I call it) may very well be the best phone ever made.

As a matter of fact, if you can post the full details of how you got to where you are (I mean, what you took out of which older ROM you based this off of, so on & so forth) maybe I could help you with getting it to the alpha stage. Mostly because this is the exact type of thing I was looking to do with my Droid Classic (as I call it) and it works really awesomely well as an MP3 / media player. If I'm ambitious I might even make a derivative with GPS enabled for runners - so you've got your GPS app to track your run and your MP3 player to keep you entertained!
(My Droid Classic has made it through 4 half-marathons, 2 full marathons, and was caught outside with me in an absolute torrential downpour and is still playing media like a champ! It's too good to dispose of.)
Just got an old OG Droid myself from a friend (screen is fairly shattered but it's still functional - the GPS doesn't work at all, nada, no signal ever regardless of where I'm at, maybe the internal GPS cable came loose, no idea).
Is it possible to build a ROM for this thing without any phone code at all, meaning no mention of any phone capabilities, no dialer, etc? I've never gotten into "building" Android or directly creating my own ROMs but the idea of a pmpDroid (portable media player Droid, guess I should trademark that name, eh?) is damned interesting since that's all I currently use it for. I do intend to replace the outer body as it has a lot of cosmetic damage and also get a new battery, generally rebuild it over time as I acquire the replacement parts and of course a new glass/digitizer setup as well.
So basically something like the Samsung Galaxy Players use, a full Android experience but zero phone code - that's gotta be possible, right?
It is still an excellent device in spite of the shortcomings (video formats are kinda crappy, only Baseline h.264 support sadly) but overall it's definitely worth using as a PMP.
Popped into phones 4 u and saw both phones next to each other and now having 2 nd thoughts on the Htc one.

I'd much rather have nothing than have a BB or an iPhone but at least if the OP asks in the linked thread, they may get a least a slight amount of unbiased answers.
The answer they're most likely to get, however, will undoubtedly be the One due to the fact it's Android.

The HTC One has a better screen, speakers, build quality, battery, faster SoC and an IR port. There is also the added Android experience when it comes to apps, customization and ROMs.
The BB Z10 is a solid device. It's completely gesture-based, smooth, has a unified notifications/social hub, and a great on-screen keyboard. It also has a removable battery and micro-SD slot. Build quality is good, battery life isn't. BB10 looks a bit stale compared to Android's 'openness', and the app selection is bad...but you can sideload some Android apps.
I'd personally pick the HTC One. But if you're a Blackberry fan and don't mind the lack off apps and customizability, the Z10 is not a bad choice.

I've both the phone. With the last upgrade the battery life on BB10 is good. Both the phone have their good things and bad things. In any case the BB is more business oriented and has the Hub that is far away All other phone. It's so simple!!!! Just one gesture to take a look to everything happens in your world!
The One has other major characteristics like the camera, a lots of outstanding features, an obviously better construction quality. Choice is up to you. Both the phone are good phone and the BB OS is truly rock stable and usable... I repeat... I own both so both are good!
One.
Bye Bye now.

I would not recommend BB to 99% of people mainly due to poor app selection and a lackluster OS. I don't care what alternative you pick. Go buy an iPhone or GS4, I don't care, just not a BB.
I own both of these phones. The z10 will always come out of the bag when I am at work and i need to have quick access to emails. In my opinion, it also offers superior calendar app for business users. It is also quicker to navigate than the One due to its intuitive gestures. I also make less errors on z10 keyboard. BB10 has slightly superior battery life since upgrade. Plus, the z10 battery is removable and its memory is expandable. A plus for me again, was that it has a very functional pull down shortcut menu with options to adjust WiFi, sound etc on it.
However, the One has a much superior build, more apps and has more stable software. It has way better sound quality, screen resolution and camera. It is also faster and smoother than the z10.
Being android, it is so much more customizable than the Z10 too.
Neither phone has battery percentage indicator, which is not great. However, at least with the One, it is possible to get an app that puts the percentage in the notification bar....visible on all screens.
Your choice might depend on your use. I use both phones for different purposes. Z10 for work and the One for leisure.
USING: BB Z10, HTC ONE and GALAXY NOTE 2
Personally I'd say htc one. But go into a shop and try them both next to each other to see which you really prefer.

Blackberry for me only stands out because of their harware keyboard phones(yeah I am a keyboard freak when it comes to phones). But with the all touch phone like the Z10? Get the HTC One
I think the blackberry is more durable while the Htc one will be prone to scratches. The blackberry also has a much better resale value on sell your mobile compare sites which tells me the Htc is not rated. However the Htc is more powerful bigger and better screen.

The Z10 on screen keyboard is MUCH better than the HTC One's keyboard imo. I make much less errors - it has much better prediction. Maybe try to test both in your local store...typing at full speed. I reckon you'll be surprised.

I understand about the onscreen keyboards What I was talking about is the hardware keyboard that exists on old blackberry phones. So without them I wouldn't reconsider onscreen keyboard quality over everything
And yeah even up till now I'm still relying on hardware keyboard phones. Still using the Mytouch 4g slide. And just now I tried using onscreen keyboards and I suck! Haha 2 letters/sec FTW!

Oh yessss. Swype make the difference. Anyhow I think the best in BB is the Hub. Generally is impossible stating one phone is better than another. It depends on the use. I like the One, but olso I like my z10.
I have been using the Z10 for about a week now and I got to say... I am impressed.
There aren't as many apps out for it as there are for iOS and android but really, how many apps were available when android or IOS was first released?
I used to own a blackberry and left it for android. After using the Z10 I feel it's time to switch back.
Don't hate the device until you actually try it out.
I personally judge a device on first, how it feels in my hand. I'm not going to carry a phone around with me if it just feels uncomfortable to hold. The HTC One S was at the top of that list for me. It has now been dethroned. The Z10 has a feel to it that's hard to explain it just feels right.
Secondly for me is integration of my various email accounts and social networking clients. Blackberry 10 has an integration that surpasses anything you have ever seen in android. The way it handles email, texts, social media, and messengers cannot be touched. I'm at a loss for words. It can't be beat, period.
The interface on the Z10 is easy for someone coming from android, iOS or windows phone to understand. There is a small learning curve. You're not going to pick it up instantly and understand how to use it for the first time, but it's easy to learn.
The rest of it is basically stuff you already know. innovative keyboard, mediocre app world, OK camera, etc.
I'm not telling you to buy the device over the HTC One. I have no experience with that device and how it operates.
I think i'd rather cut off a toe than have a blackberry, really bad phones, although the z10 has to be the best they have to offer, just put it next to the One and you'll make up your own mind.
In my line of work i use every single device on the market (available in britain anyway) and like i said it's the best they have to offer but i feel that it's still not bringing a lot to the table, not when you compare it to the higher tier android handsets.

I agree. If you need to own two phones, these might be best of the bunch at the moment... with The One leading for build and (android) apps Vs. BBZ10 winning for smooth interface, integration, comfort in hand, calendar and on-screen keyboard prediction
If you have to choose one, get whichever suits your personal needs best. Try em both out in store perhaps
Currently interchangeably using HTC One, BBZ10 and Note 2

If you really think this a question, I have no answer for you.
This is an Android vs BB10 question, not a phone vs phone question.
