[Q] Switching from an iPhone 4

Hey everybody. I'm very new to Android and have been using the iPhone the past 3 years. I bought an iPhone 4 a month ago off an upgrade from my 3G at the Apple Store. I would like to switch to the Samsung Captivate. What is the best way to do this? Can I use the Captivate on the same 2-year contract? And are you former-iPhone users happy you made the switch? Thanks guy. This is an awesome site and even though I haven't had an Android device I follow this forum and can't wait to put all the sweet mods on my Captivate to make it much faster than the iPhone!

Yes I had the iPhone 4 I return it and purchased the Samsung captivate I am much happier with the Samsung captivate over the iPhone 4 the fact that you can change everything on the phone is awesome you can have a custom launcher custom icon and a custom lock screen *in my opinion the samsung captivate is far superior to the iPhone 4*

i believe you have to do it within 30 days.

If you're willing to pay full price for the Captivate, yes you can use it with your current data plan. You can call AT&T and have them change it to the non-iPhone plan or just have the sales guy do it at the store...but I'm pretty sure they cost the same.
As far as being happy I made the switch...hell yes. I couldn't stand the restrictions that had been placed on the iOS software. It annoyed me to no end that in order to simply change the colors of something, or move icons around I had to circumvent security measures that had been put in place (jailbreaking)...which then led to a ferocious battle with an Apple "Genius" who physically broke my phone while "repairing" it and then blamed the USB hardware error on my jailbreaking software, and Apple sending me to a different Apple store to get a refurbished phone as I called and confirmed that the hardware error I was getting could NOT be caused by jailbreaking. I'd had enough. Not to mention everyone in an Apple store at any given time looks like a hardcore douche.
I love the openness of Android. I had a G1 back in the day but broke it, and didn't have enough money to buy a new one...but I had a contract renewal with ATT which is how I ended up with an iPhone. It feels great to be able to do whatever I want with my phone. I thoroughly enjoy learning about the inner workings of Android and flashing different ROMs, etc.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I think I'm going to be happy switching to the Android. Another question - what about music? How does that work with the Android devices. I know it's based off an expandable SD card, but is there like an iTunes alternative to sync my music and transfer the music? Also, once I do the switch I am definetely going to root the device and apply one of the new Roms that take the AT&T crap out and make it run faster. I am VERY familiar with jailbreaking the iPhone, I have been doing it ever since 2.2.1. Is it as easy to learn how to root as it is to jailbreaking? Thanks guys

There's an app called DoubleTwist that's supposed to be equivalent to what iTunes would do on the iPhone (without the store, anyway.) I've tried it but haven't had a lot of luck yet...probably due to peculiarities in my environment.
If you know where the media files are supposed to go on the device, it should be as simple as copying them to it over USB.
The Captivate does come with 16 GB on its "internal SD card," so the SD card is optional for that

you can download music directly to your phone and save the hassle of syncing with at computer..
and best part is most of the time its free, but there really isn't much of a market yet, but you can download any mp3 file you wanted and its not tied down to iTunes.

Not yet. But you can use an alternative home screen program such as ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro. These programs run on top of your operating system and changer the user interface to pretty much anything you want

I had an iphone 3G, 3GS and 4. The Captivate is a better device than all of them in almost every regard. The only things that the iPhone 4 has over the Samsung Captivate are:
Better Camera with Flash
Working GPS
Better games (my opinion)
Better music player UI
You can get a few different launchers for the Captivate that work pretty well. I use LauncherPro. It's not stock Android but it gets rid of a lot of the TouchWiz.
And it's very customizable.
I am happy with the switch to Android. If I don't keep it it's only due to the GPS issues and I will move on to a different Android device.

I was with you up until the games (which I understood to be an opinion) and the Music UI. In my opinion the music app that samsung provides is more than adequate and considering the controls in the lockscreen with the slide down disc to change songs and in the notification bar. Not too mention the array of EQ features and 5.1 channel output it definitely trumps the iphone.
But of course that is subjective

I am about to come back to the captivate from the iphone 4. I always go back to the iphone to stop my love for hacking and modifying the phones general purpose. The captivate is a great phone on att as far as android goes. The ui helps alot of iphone users to adjust for the simple fact that it mimics ios. You know I did go back to the iphone this last time because I got my captivate cheap on craigslist and made a killin to buy an iphone outright. I got the iphone 4 because of flash and front facing camera. After a month with it Ive just come to the conclusion that I dont even like the flash and I dont use face time enough to justify the cause. I really wish I had sprint cause my ideal device is the evo(led notify and front camera) but I get a great deal through work with att so the captivate is just a better 3GS IMO!

First of all I don't take well to condescension. So I'm not "smoking" anything. Subjective being the key word, I prefer playing emulators of games I like with the gba/psx emulator rather than cutesy games about cooking or herding sheep. Just me

I also had the iPhone 4(returned it also), as well as every other iPhone...So after 3+ years of ios and iPhones, Im very happy I made the switch to android and the captivate and will never go back.
When I did have my iPhones and ios I had them jailbroken...and I still think Android and the captivate is mucher better. Stock vs stock and rooted vs jailbroken!
One really big thing that I like and enjoy android so much more is the community! Android people are awesome and always wiling to help out!!!

CDMA Tab Users - Looking for ROM ideas.

Hey CDMA Tab Owners,
Hopefully we get off to a good foot this time but I was really curious what some of your thoughts and ideas would be for a new ROM? I notice the selection is a bit thin with a single ROM for each. I've been dabbing around the last couple days and I think I have a fair idea of where development stands for the Tab right now. Primarily GSM but I'd like to start some CDMA development of my own. Anyone looking for something besides what is already out there? (Don't say a HC port , not happening, yet.)
I'd love to hear some ideas. My thoughts on this are to start easy and have a primary focus of making the tablet a better, well tablet. I like AOSP/CM6/CM7 as much as the next guy but they just don't feel right on a tablet. So I definitely am leaning towards trying to optimize the tablet experience as much as possible to differentiate it further from a phone. Maybe look into some custom apps, nothing is off the table.

I've been so confused as to why there is such a small amount of development for the CDMA tabs.
Anyways, thanks for taking a leap...I think a custom ROM, for starters, should be something that is deodexed for theming capabilities and has all of the bloatware removed to save space. I'm not too worried about having an OC kernel, yet, since I tried the one that is out for CDMA tabs and my phone bricked

Liberty or something like it !
I own a Droid x as well as my tab and would love to see Liberty or something like it. I would love to see a pulldown bar text editor, the Liberty toolbox where you can tweak settings yourself. I like the Khasmek orange theme and Im running it now with Voodoo rom with lag fixes and running like 2200+ quadrant, it's silky smooth I love it but would love to see more color options and more attention to the device. Something that optimizes the system as much as possible to save the battery and make the device last longer between charges. Nothing too specific just want Liberty, Apex, Rubix (which I haven't tried on my X but hear its good) Doesn't even have to be named any of those names, can be a mix of all of them with a different name...I would really love to see more development for this device my hope was restored when i saw Khasmeks orange theme and put it on my tab !!

highly doubtful since they are going all about HTML5 video on the web which is better in many ways.
but flash, your better off asking adobe for that answer.
hey maybe since so many API's are going to be released with mango maybe someone will make a plug-in for internet explorer or maybe also make a browser app that comes included with flash allready.
but with flash on the phone you really only want to use it with videos and some vids allready work on the phone since you have youtube for those type of videos, or you can do like i do sometimes.
i watch some revision3 videos and they have links to download the videos and i tap on the download on the video and it plays it automatically.
it briefly shows cannot download file for less than a sec. then it plays the video like any other video.

I would need flash not for playing video but to use websites flash made

Adobe has confirmed that Flash will be coming to WP7. The main question is when. Probably after Mango as right now IE doesn't have plug-in support & HOPEFULLY that'll come with Mango. Just Google "Adobe Flash WP7" & you'll see multiple articles stating this.

It amazes me that people still go on about Flash on smartphones. Everyone slagged off Apple for not doing it on the iPhone but they have been proven right because Adobe have never released a version that runs well, even four years later.
If you really want Flash, get an Android phone and watch it go all slow and laggy when you hit a page with Flash content. It's just not worth the hassle.

I've never had a problem on an android phone with flash. Never had any lag what so ever. As long as the phone has the hardware to run it, it will not lag. This includes flash enabled websites. I had an HD2 and a MT4G with flash and they ran just fine with no lag on flash videos or flash enabled websites. And the HD7 has the hardware and capability to run flash and flash enabled content just fine without any lag.

Lmfao! The whole OS is littered with lag, especially the browser. Flash only makes it worse. Android is fast but not fluid which are two very different things, and when you compare it to iOS or WP7, it doesn't compare. Once I experienced the fluidity of Windows Phone, I knew I would never look back to Android again. As for flash within IE9/10 that's a good question and Microsoft said they have no immediate plans to support it but the majority of that responsibility really lies on Adobe so... As far as is currently known, there is no support coming for it. What I'd like to know is; would there be any adverse effects on browser performance like on Android.

No lag ever? Good for you. I used to have a Droid running CM7 and one day just got fed up with having to tweak everything to get it the way I wanted so much so that I was in recovery mode probably more than actually using it as a phone. It still lagged but I guess you could chock that one up to aged hardware, anyways I ended up throwing it at the wall hard enough to break the screen and the rest of the phone along with it and pretty much just said **** Android and **** Google they obviously don't know how to listen to their followers as people have been asking for some form of hardware acceleration to aid the lag since I don't know how long. Having to resort to custom ROMs to aid an issue that should've been fixed long ago is absolutely not an enjoyable experience for the average consumer. Oh and I just remembered, since IE mobile doesn't support plug-ins (I didn't hear anything about it for IE9 either) it's still up to Microsoft...

I call BS, I had a HD2, and tried literlly every Android rom I could find, SD and NAND version, yes some ran fast, but they all lag to some extent, and the browser is allways jumpy. Not that it was unusable by compared to iOS or WP7 the browser experiance is horrible. Its capable of doing more, but at the same time it is far more frustrating to use.

Where did you here that? One guy asked, "Can you talk about Flash support?" The MS guy said, "No talk about Flash support." In other words, they didn't want to give an official statement. That is a big difference between not talking about it & saying it's not coming.
So the questions is, are we going to support Flash in IE9 for Windows Phone
We are working with Adobe, but it has not yet been decided the last time I checked--part of that is Adobe is doing what they have to do and we're doing what we have to do. The last I checked the team is working with them but I don't think they have any announcement whether it's going to definitely work or not.

[Q] JB Rom without Butter

Hello everyone
is there any jellybean rom without project butter in it
i like the functionalities of JB but project butter cause a heavy load to the device , especially when i try to play some games like blood and glory or any other "demanding" game
it is the only reason i've downgraded from JB to ICS
so please if you are using/know/seen any low fat JB rom, please let me know

how did you know that Project butter is what slowed down your phone? i do not think that is true. you could try slim jb rom

This is going to be an issue with the particular ROM you tried. Current builds of JB are considerably smoother than they were even a few weeks ago.

well im not a developer or anything but i've tried several roms
and from what i've understood project butter forces the GPU to work at a constant 60fps which is great for regular using, pretty smooth
but im using now cm9.1 sable build and i really cant tell the difference (smoothness wise) however, when i benchmarked JB roms (such as slimbean, cm10, remics-jb) compared with ics roms (cm9, slim ics, onecosmics) ive always found the ics performs a bit better (quadrents and Antutu) now i know benchmark scores dnt tell the whole story, but i've found it true in my case, specially when playing games (wind-up knights, blood and glory, agent dash) these are the main games that have lower fps on jb than they have on ics

Hi,
I'm running OpenSensation CM10 on my HTC Sensation.....
I don't see project butter implemented in this JB ROM.
The CM10 ROM is about 5% faster than Stock ICS and has better user options but its UI is just as jittery as ICS,
Compared to a Galaxy SIII Running stock JB my phone is embarassing.
I'm actually looking for a custom JB ROM for the Sensation that shows off Project Butter........still looking.
My Contract is up in Feb and I am seriously considering moving to a Windows 8 Phone, now that's a buttery interface.
I love Android but seriously. If a POS phone with half my Sensation Specs can run buttery smooth on Windows 8 then what the heck is going on with Android ?????

Well let me explain it to you this way:
Android runs all apps in Java whilst WP8 uses C#. Java is considerably slower and Dalvik doesn't help either.

Wow....Appreciate the Info, I had done some research into Java implementation on android, dug some article out comparing the iOS to Android for smoothness and explaining the differences in UI implementation, processor scheduling etc...
iOS is not that impressive either and how can it be, both OS's are UNIX/LINUX based and the only reason I can tell from what I have read is that Apple swings all its resources into action when a page compositing request has been sensed by the touchscreen or the thread handler prioritizes the GUI at that moment therefore iOS is not a true multitasking OS.
Either way, I have seen Buttery goodness, stock JB on the Galaxy SIII is extremely smooth compared to the Opensensation ROM I flashed, I replied to another comment earlier that I'm pretty sure the flash must not have taken as intended for it to be running so badly...
I did a factory wipe, flashed the ROM and the GAB files, reinstalled my apps from the playstore not backup, moved every app I could to the SD card to free up RAM, Made sure ' Force GPU for 2d rendering ' is selected, I'm using the Badass Governor and CFQ i/o scheduler....
And the GUI is jittery as hell, about the same as stock ICS overall....I JUST WANT MY BUTTER !!! LOL
I guess I will try and reflash and see if I can improve anything or try and find another custom ROM that runs project butter for comparison.

I'm curious though why on earth Google went ahead and bought android if java has such poor performance, they must have tested it? Also, is java really just that bad? I've always thought java to be a POS, seems anything created in it is slow, bugged, and just really annoying, but then there are exceptions to that, so, what gives?

Actually you are wrong Sir, there is plenty wrong with Linux LOL !!! Perspective is Key, there is a reason Linux doesn't dominate the OS marketplace......Linux serves a NERD driven market which is a microscopic percentage of the worldwide computer user base.
For the Nerds... Linux is awsome, I used to use Suse Enterprise myself so you won't hear me argue, however.....
Not everyone wishes to F with every minutae of making their OS work, this applies even more strongly to Android also, simply put your everyday user couldn't give a fart in the wind about what makes it all work, instead, it should compete evenly with other mobile OS's out there and put simply, the amount of hardware required to make Android come even close is mindboggling bullsh*t.
That said, I still don't have an answer as to why a Galaxy S III running stock JB removes it's wang from it's underpants and plain urinates all over my Sensation as far as JB smoothness is concerned and I repeat, is there a JB ROM out there that actually performes the buttery goodness of a stock JB ROM ??

You can forgive my ' LOL ' because it's Christmas and it's the right thing to do.
I didn't knock LINUX during my first post or in any reference made thereafter. As stated, I use to use it myself and back when I actually was 15 a friend of mine and I ran a couple of Quake 3 servers using LINUX simply because it was better than Windows.
I feel Google needs to divorce itself from JAVA if any meaningful performance gains are to be achieved, in the meantime my quest for butter will continue.

I don't have facebook installed, I don't use weather or news and I have all unused apps disabled and every app I can move is on the SD card.
I compared my HTC Sensation JB to stock ICS on the wife's HTC Amaze, the Amaze is far smoother with GUI rendering. I am going to reflash to stock ICS today and will post my impressions.

My version whoring has become detrimental to my SSD - Am I weird or is this normal?

Ok, so I have figured that I have kinda got this weird OCD like issue that has met at a point of decision.
I am not sure if I am alone here or not? But I will explain and see if there are others out there like me?
First of all I think that I am unique and weird as far as this specific issue is concerned. I am going to state some specifics around certain aspects of my characteristics, that I think should separate me from the typical (more common types) amoung us.
(man that was a big convoluted sentence - reads again....yup that is what I wanted to say, continue).
So...I have been playing with Android since eclair, which was mainly just basic mods to stock ROM anyway. I started out with my first modded full ROM at Froyo DarkyROM for my SGS1. This was the point that hooked me, and I pretty much went about doing my own mods to ROMs since then.
I have a laptop which now contains all of my dev stuff, with exception of my linux/ubuntu virtual machine that is solely responsible for building android that reside son my desktop PC (currently decomishioned whilst I upgrade other PCs etc). This laptop has a solid state drive that is 180GB in size (and yes I know before you rant on about how I have got things wrong way around with virtual machine being not on SSD I will explain.
This is for context only, I have my PC (that is only in opperational order so I can do things on it to get me by till I upgrade) that has the VM for not just linux but a heap of other work related PC stuff for mapping. I am a cartographer and use mapping applications and servers and all sorts of stuff that needs to be in a VM and the SSD wouldn't be big enough to house them all. Anyway I diverse....as I usually do.
I have this weird habit where I have kept every stable build I have made since Froyo. If it's not stable it gets trashed, that's no issue. And also since I got roasted by XDA early (false accusations and mistaken/confusion of using someone elses work) I have had a paranoyer of keeping all of the sources (that made up these stable builds *only*).
My solid state drive is getting full....and we all know that performance takes a massive nose dive as these SSDs reach max capacity.
My computer is very well organised though. Everything is structured and there is mostly not many duplicates across the drive. I have even gone about systematic cleansing as much as I can see fit. HOWEVER.....I cannot seem to bring my self to pressing the delete key to a nice stable build of gingerbread I once used for my SGS1 that I no longer even have anymore?
See that's where I seperate my self from the people who just plain hoard anything and everything and keep just about everything even if it was ****. Those types I guess (and from what I have seen) leave their PCs in such a disarray and kaos to begin with that it would seem expected that they were full to the point I am even before me, and probably 3 times over already. Or these are the types that would just fill a drive and begin their rampage on another new drive waiting to be filled.
Am I weird? Is this normal? Do others like me exist on these forums? Is there even anyone on these forums that has been around as long as Eclair (Yes eclair and froyo are versions of Android LOL:laugh.
Feel free to post a response. Rant and abuse at will, I'm ready for hurtling payouts.
Should I actually say good by to my long lost versions of Android that will never be flashed every again? Or will they become like video games like froga and donky kong and come back into fashion where I will feel the need to be nostalgic? (btw I am having a joke at my own expense here...I don't seriously ever think that will happen - but does not encourage myself any more to press delete).

I doubt this is going to generate the response of anyone with an attention span that's greater than the length of my post.
For reference: This includes all dev tools besides linux it's self. This includes 3 devices, all Samsung. Galaxy S1, Galaxy S2 and now Galaxy S3.
This includes stable builds not builds I have released. This spans 5 versions of Android

Can't you simply copy all of it to a backup external drive? To free up some space?

Eclair and Froyo weren't that long ago. Anybody who owned a GS1 used both.
There's really no reason to be holding onto older Android versions. You're not going to use them and the source code is available should you ever want it. Software doesn't become "collectible" since it's not a tangible thing.
Also whoring isn't even appropriate in this context. More like hoarding.

I'll go ahead and indulge the OP... long long time ago... back in the 386, 9600baud modem days, I too, was all about organization on my puter... I had directory trees and everything... Would even go so far as to decide should a word be capitalized or not... Then my balls dropped, and suddenly such things became trivial... I was no longer worried about a cluttered root C:\ folder, or extra lines in the autoexec.bat... Hope everything works out for you!

I can relate a little to hoarding software...
Ended up just deleting saves and grinding up old discs.
Never gave that stuff a second thought after it was gone.

Feel better i have gone on a mass deletion rampage. Goodbye old ROM versions.
Oh and sorry for yesterday. You kind of caught me on a high as my medication kicked in. I apologise. I have narcolepsy, and I am given amphetamines to stay awake.
Already doesn't help that I can type at blazing speeds let alone being supercharged. Picture Hammy from that cartoon movie 'Over The Hedge' (after an energy drink). That's me some days ....I can just never tell? I could've taken a left down struggle street and none of my medication is working for me, then like 4-6 hours later the meds from morning, lunch and afternoon all kick in at once and I am riding the outter lane of the Autobahn.
