Go read this thread and use that kernel with the ROM recommended there.

Try Darchdroid or you can wait until the get all the bugs worked out of the Froyo rom. I have been running the froyo rom since June 25th and it is fast.
Sense is eating up alot of your speed .

Sorry to say this but sense doesn't slow my rom down one bit. Its all in ur head. I've got my rom oc'd and have multiple launchers including sense and there is no speed difference. Actually it is quite fast.
I just downloaded Fresh 2.3.3
I just downloaded fresh 2.3.3 and its pretty quick, you will of course need a task killer, im using AutoKiller set to aggressive in the presets. I am considering overclocking it but havent yet
Question: what exactly is it about a particular ROM that makes it fast? JIT? For example, everyone says Darchdroid is fast. What about it that makes it so? A lot also say Fresh, HoneyBun, and nfinitefx's ROM are fast. I know they all support OC, but all things equal, is there an agreed speed tier list?

What affects the speed is the number of apps (as well as their optimizations), overclocking, JIT, the ROM base, and the Launcher. The number of apps affects the phone's memory. More memory = less lag generally (apps2sd corrects this issue). Overclocking, of course, increases the raw speed of the ROM. JIT helps apps lag less (games pretty much). The ROM base is a big factor. Basically HTC ROM's have more bloat in them than AOSP ROM's, so AOSP runs faster almost all the time. The Launcher also affects the speed because large launchers such as Sense take up more RAM. The generic, vanilla launcher is extremely minimal and therefore doesn't use as much RAM. So if you can optimize the heck out of Sense, then it will run faster.
drop it out of a plane.
My Experiences:
I have tried JIT, AOSP ROM , Sense + OC, and Sense. And now I am back at Sense + OC. Here are my opinions:
- JIT:
Pro: App loading + executing is much faster
Con: Phone run HOT + lower Baterry life + Bugs (Hopefully FROYO solve this)
- OC:
Pro: This speed up the system significantly.
Con: None or not yet
- ROM that has tweaks in the following areas will help speed up the phone:
1) Low memory killer tweak to prvovide more RAM (aggressively to kill hidden app, content provider and Empty app)
2) CPU Threshold setting at lower value (instead of default at 80%) --> Cost battery life but much quicker response at UI interface level.
My phone is fast and stable with Sense + OC at the moment. The wishes that I have for my phone now is:
1. Install more RAM .. hehheh not possible
2. Move Dalvik cache to phone internal cache space like Darch Droid
3. A Kernel that OC the GPU

idk about that. i tried dd2.7 yesterday for the first time. i wiped and installed 7 times to get it to run fast. enabled jit, flashed uv kernel,i had nothing installed at the time and no lw and it was 70% slower than my nfinite rom. i honestly dont know why everyone says dd is so fast. it literally took 15 seconds just to open up the dialer. i even restarted the phone several time so it would zipalign everything. and yes i wiped everything including ext.

When you first install a rom you will need to wait until the phone is done loading everything. Usually people try to open stuff before everything has been finalized and so it will open slower. I love sense, but in my opinion it is slower, but that might have been because I didn't OC it.

Has to be something you are not doing or your phone. I am running darchdroid 2.7 right now and it is hands down FASTER than any other ROM I have tried. I have the UV kernel installed as well. Most key presses are instant. Did you set the transitions to fast or turn them off altogether? That makes a big difference.

i did everything right. like i do with all my roms. i always turn the window and transition animation to off. that makes it so much faster then if you turn it to fast. had that set to off,uv kernel flashed, let everything finish syncing, didnt even install anything. still took 15 seconds just to open up the dialer. my nfinite rom is super fast. the second i press on something it almost emediately comes up. almost **** bricks at how fast it was

Maybe you should update your signature . I'm curious, how's the speed/battery life of Fresh 2.3.3 compared to nfinitefx rom? I'm trying to decide which should be my first custom rom. Oh, and are you using the odex or deodex version?
Had my tab 8.9 for about 2 days now and so far the only thing that's annoying me is the lag, the browser has crashed too many times to count and the home screen is constantly freezing and stuttering and ive noticed when i have about 4 apps open the task manager is showing under 100mb of ram left which is pitiful for the 1gb the tablet actually has,
Knowing my luck this is just a faulty unit and will need to be replaced asap before it pisses me of further and i end up throwing it down the mountain

Strange take it back too shop or try it with different people wifi
I would say there is a lag issue by the number of posts in Google (try searching "samsung galaxy tab 8.9" AND lag).
A few things to check:
- Try an update (latest should be HC 3.2).
- Try different a browser (Dolphin HD is good option so check if crashing on different browser).
- I've read that turning off in Settings Animations helps and as well as Motion Settings.
- Try a different launcher. Have heard ADW makes things smoother (try Go Launcher as well).
- More drastic measures include installing a new rom but would wait for the ICS update (which is my golden hope to fix).
If still an issue, then take it back in to show them. I am hoping ICS does make things smoother.
Yes I am also pinning my hopes on ics as it should sort everything out, im on stock 3.2 atm but have also tried the overcome rom but don't know about changing the kernel to help speed things up or even over clocking. dolphin hd hasn't improved it that much if anything it just prolongs the time until the browser closes itself without warning, and ill give the settings a try and report. thanks for the help

Shouldn't be getting FC's on browsing so suggests something else.
Maybe a dalvik wipe is in order in cwm.
Btw, SetCPU which is a paid app allows you to oc and I think overcome has oc support. There are other free oc apps as well.

I play Android Drag Racing on my Tab and it does seem to lag a bit. I cannot hit the shifts that I can with my Galaxy S II; not even close. The 3.2 update did not help...
Yeah, this browser scroll lag is killing me. I've got an LTE and it scrolls so much slower than my Dell Steak on 2.2 scrolls so much smoother. My 8.9 feels like I'm pulling my finger through molasses. Even Opera scrolls slow. It is very annoying.
Ive just ordered one of these because they are on sale in the UK at the moment. It was either this or an original Xoom, both are £279 at the moment..
In the shop the xoom was silky smooth in either orientation, but the Tab was laggy. I just assumed it was the store unit that had been messed about with by customers. So it effects all units? It was pretty bad, i hope it can be fixed otherwise it will have to go back. Im beginning to think i made the wrong choice..

Personally I do not think you have made the wrong choice. Any lag issues with the interface can be easily fixed by downloading a different launcher from Play Google The Xoom comes with the stock version of Android Honeycomb and this is why it appears smoother. Android Ice Cream Sandwich brings performance improvements so should be smoother even with Samsung's TouchWiz launcher in place once Samsung have released the update; alternatively you can install a different version of the OS, even a stock version through Galaxian-Soup, if you feel there are still issues.
Its not just that though is it. The browser is laggy, Maps was much slower, some games have issues and i have seen reports that the Xoom handles HD movie playback better. I really torn over this because i prefer the 8.9 physically, but the lag is a real killer. I factory reset a store tab today and it was still super laggy.
I have both arriving tomorrow which is when i will decide.
The Xoom has much more mature ICS ROMs with no issues. The ICS ROMs for the 8.9 still seem laggy in the vids i have seen.

Performance issues are one thing, but complaining about "100MB of RAM left" is ignorant. The whole point of having RAM is to use it. Android isn't like Windows, it uses RAM to cache aggressively - a desirable behaviour.
In other words, if your tab isn't using most of the memory then you've got an inefficient device.

While I agree with the above statements, the tablet caching bloatware apps in RAM is still a waste. Why is the stupid thing cashing Social Hub, Media Hub, Samsung App Store, Accuweather, etc, when I don't have accounts set up on those or have them running on a homescreen or widget? On a fresh reboot, I can use the TW Task Manager's 'Clear Memory' button and it kills 20+ apps and frees ~200MB of RAM. Waste.

If you wanna stay on stock rom i suggest you flash v20e. If you insist on europe version i suggest you flash v20o. These are latest stock roms. And i think this is the quickest and the best solution to your problem. Rooted ones can be found here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480392 (look at the latest pages)
If you are open to using custom roms and if you are all about performance knock on Huexxx's door and install Zeus v6 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454274
If you are all about looks then look for the achyut's roms Prada, Sapphire. There is also a great ROM, tantrum's Marvel v6. I gave you a sneak peak. Rest is in your hands. Look for them in the forum make up your mind.
And for a future referance a friendly suggestion: Questions should be posted at Q/A section.
I had both german roms, N and now O, and there was no lag in any menu... maybe your problem is elsewhere, a bad app or maybe too many messages (SMS)??
Try to install WatchDog and look for a bad app... too many CPU cycles...
I have more than 800 contacts... (From '97 and it's still growing), including facebook contacts, a vast array of apps and games and there is no problem, no noticeable lag! The new Gingerbread is way faster than Froyo, so it's a little awkward that you have lag problems.
If you have badly cracked apk's that could be a problem too (try to buy them, google has a very good discount policy), or different add oriented apps, because a lot of them are running constantly and it's no wonder that your phone lags! I had the same problem with GLU's Games... all run in the background and are impossible to stop... STUPID if you ask me!!!
i have lag on the contact list too, froyo was noticeably much much smoother.
its so weird, i havent found a solution yet so i'll be waiting for further new LG firmwares.
(tried both v20n and v20o)
its the same on any rom even zeus v6 , marvel , and v20x its just a 15 fps lag on scrolling , and i dont like it , it isnt smooth enough ... maybe there is a fps cap?
I agree with u guys I have lag too, the only Rom I used without lag was cm7

multitasking for what?
I currently use stock gb jw5, and use at the same time gps+navi, music player and phone calls or text, with some background utilities (tasker, avast) with no problems at all.
btw, what's the use of multitasking with a small screen?
you cannot have several apps running on foreground at the same time. sgs is not a tablet, go figure a pc.
can you pls specify what kind of multitasking and in which way it is better than gb?
Does it have the tw launcher? And the big Widgets at the top of the status bar like a stock Samsung Rom?

After encountering bugs in a few ICS rom's, I ran back to the more stable GB custom rom's. I've also noticed that battery backup is better on the GB rom's.
I'm open to suggestions and also willing to try if anyone here can recommend stable ICS rom's to me.

multitasking is the ability to run (or appear to run) more than 1 program at the same time, the SGS is generally restricted by memory meaning when you run a new app, another app has to stop in order to free up memory. ICS has more memory than GB (399mb) meaning more apps can run at the same time, meaning its better for multitasking. multitasking doesnt mean apps are running in the foreground. ICS also runs a lot faster and has more features. Take a nandroid backup and try it!

thanks, but
1- I know what multitasking is...
2- I tried quite any available flavour of ics.
my point is different. On my pc at work as a finance employee, I have lotus notes, bloomberg, matlab, 2 or more excel istances, and who knows what running at the same time. At home, as a photographer, I have the browser, photoshop, lightroom, music player and who knows what else running at the same time.
this is useful multitasking. Not multitasking for the sake of having something you can tell friends. Oh, my phone does multitasking! By saying it has more memory so it is better for multitasking means nothing, sorry I do not want to sound rude, but... better for what, I mean, in real user experience?
On my phone if I browse the web, I don't need to have a photoshop batch running at the same time. Or a time consuming routine under some statistical app. Well, I do not feel I NEED it. If you check out your friends' status in facebook, you're not texting a friend on your sms app.
So my question was: what do you really need multitasking for on your phone with a small screen? Me, I have navigation and music player up while I'm driving, and all services needed to have a phone and a messaging system. bluetooth to communicate with car audio system, data mobile for navigation, tasker to control the settings a bit... but this can be done smoothly and fast with gb, so... exactly in what ics multitasking is better than gb, I am not talking about specs, I talk about real use. did you experience any fc in gb that you do not get in ics? or what? Can you give me some examples where you can take advantage of multitasking in ics better than gb?
this could be a potentially good reason to try ics once again.

I know the specs. Don't be generic. "You can run more stuff". Such as?
What kind of PRACTICAL advantage you have in ics vs gb regarding multitasking??
can you provide examples in your daily use?
can you provide any info about your actual improvement?
How many apps do you run at the same time? Why?
How many apps are you able to run smoother and faster at the same time compared to gb?
Gingerbread xxjw4 is better than any ics rom. Trust me I've used cm9 , aokp , weui, and slimics.
Only if your feeling bored and just wanna play a bit you can try out ics. Its nice and different. But don't expect same functionality and stability as gb rom especially xxjw4.
And if you like the touchwiz features like swipe to call etc.. you'll be disappointed.

agree 100%
while stock gb (jw5 in my case) looks like it perfectly fits sgs, imho the same does not apply for ics, so far. The reason to me is straightforward, stock sgs roms are hardware specific since they also include closed source drivers, as far as I know.
but of course, you'd better try and decide by yourself, ics is free!
last time I tried cm9 - a couple of weeks ago - I got some random reboots, but maybe I messed up things, I do not know, and maybe newer nightlies or other ics roms are more stable.
Hi.
I'm on ICS333 1.1 for two days now. I tried nearly all the other ics roms, but this one is the best, in my opinion. everything works fine.
I can't tell you if its possible to use an external sd-card (within ICS) because i'm not using one. But the rom is fast and smooth. gps, wifi, hspa, cam etc. is working without issues.
The only thing to mention is, that when locking the phone, you got access to the notification bar if you got the std lockscreen on (swype to unlock). so i'm using patternlock.
backup your efs-folder ans try it out.

Greetings,
I have a problem with my S Advance. The UI is very slow, the apps working fine, I mean I can play Dead Trigger well, Temple Run 2 also run greats, but the UI is really slow.
I noticed it while I had to look for something on my old Galaxy Ace. And it was pretty weird that it feeled faster than the S Advance. So I compared them, and it was true, the whole UI in the Ace is a lot faster.
So, the best way to show the differences between the speed of UI, I recorded the stock Notes app opening on the both phone.

Yep.
Well, I decided to downgrade back to GB. I will wait for an official, international JB, I think that will be fine.

For me, CoCore E 5.0 with some props tweak improve ui response significantly.
Here are some ground rules for you to consider.
Use custom launcher like Holo Launcher HD, or if you like stock, go for modded one here in our forum.
Use ui build.prop tweaks like debug.sf.hw, or something similar.
Use good cpu scheduler like pegasusQ or OndemandQ with zen or sio (zen and cfq proven to be stable for me as a multitasker)
Use themed systemui, this helps a little bit, depends on your configuration
Play with your kernel, CoCore have some useful tweaks like Touch Booster controls and etc.
Also try to see your wakelock usage. Greenify proven for me to be most helpful in this area. Good luck
After upgrading to Jellybean (XXLQ4), my S Advance has been faster than ever... hmm.. try this, it could help....
1. Go to Settings > Dev. Options and Check Force GPU Rendering and Disable hardware overlays
2. See what's eating your RAM... sometimes the overall UI gets laggy when the RAM is almost full
3. Make sure your Power Saving mode is turned off... because Temple Run 2 works lag-free even when my Power Saving mode is on
4. Don't use Samsung's stock launcher.. it can get laggy sometimes and eats a lot of RAM btw...
5. Use governors like OnDemand. Performance or PegasusQ with I/Os like SIO or BFQ
