[Q] Help Broken LCD Screen!!! - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short. My screen is cracked and is barely visible. The screen works to the touch but i can probably make out 25% of it visually. I was wondering if anybody can send me legit links to another LCD screen or a walkthrough to fix my nexus one. My phone is rooted so sadly no warranty. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks guys...

Ugh. Call HTC first. Rooting probably won't even come up. Try to get them to fix or replace it first before trying yourself.

Agree with pwig call HTC my girlfriend did the same and they charge only like 120 (i think) for the replacement screen.

Okay i guess ill give HTC a call tomorrow and ill post up how much they charge. Thanks guys!

I think only unlocking bootloader will void warranty, rooting does not feel free to call HTC

unlocked
you should probably be ok since there is no way the boot loader could affect the screen. And not to be a douche but its an amoled, not an LCD screen.

replacement screen and case?

Hey, I'm curious to know if anyone knows where to get replacement parts for the leo. I recently fell down a flight of stair and destroyed everything to do with my leo's outsides. The screen is trashed, and the case it bent. So, I need to replace it all. Any information would be greatly appreciate.
Thanks in advance.

When in doubt, contact HTC (And doubt some more)
It's been a few days since I first started this thread. Lots of views but no replies. So... I wrote HTC about it (on their website) and their response was quite unbelievably stupid.
I mentioned that I live in China, and that I'd like to know how I could have it repaired. I put in the serial number as well. They replied by telling me that my phone was sold in France and that I should go back to France to get it repaired, otherwise I can go to Hong Kong or Taiwan to get it repaired.
I am really curious what kind of person would write such a silly reply. As though plane tickets cost the same as cab rides, and the flight is only a hop and a skip away.
I've written them back and clarified the kind of help I am looking for (An address to send my phone to, and a quote for parts and labour) here's hoping they don't misinterpret it again and send me more bs.
Not much point to my writing this other than to say, if you need to contact HTC with a similar query, assume you're writing to an idiot and be as absolutely clear as you can. You may even want to suggest to them what is common sense, and not assume that they're going to think of the most reasonable method themselves.

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your accident.
If your phone is that badly damaged why don't you just claim off your phone or house insurance and get a new one? Sounds like this is much less hassle than trying to get it repaired.
I am assuming you have some form of insurance for the phone?

Or send it to HTC repair. I heard it will cost like €150 to repair.
Have a nearly same question.
My HD2 screen one day have a big black dot at the center. I give my HD2 to the local HTC service, they answer me that, they cannot give me a warranty because it's broken by pressing from outside into a screen.
So, if replace a screen will cost about 230USD.
I take my HD2, come home, search on eBay for the screen replacement. It cost only 80USD. Maybe it's a solution for you too.
Hi,
where did you get the replacement screen for $80?
Thanks.

that is just touchscreen+bracket, not entire LCD. Though you get a free screwdriver with it

I've had the same problem too a couple of times. Fortunately both times the dot disappeared after pressing the screen gently in various places. What's disturbing, though, is that I've had the phone for a week only and gone to great lengths to ensure it has not been under any physical pressure (or psychological, for that matter ). Have anyone else noticed this; is this a weakness with the phone or have I just been unlucky?
u should take it to htc service !
I've just dropped mine and accidentally closed a door on it, so now mine is full of scratches too.
I'll take it back to the service center in Taiwan when I get back there, though rather annoyingly that won't be until March at the earliest If the HK service center can do it though, I can drop it in there in Feb ... I wonder if their pricing will be the same ...
Hey guys I dropped my HD2 too and the screen cracked. I noticed that there are repair kits at around 80 USD. Anyone has any video or tutorial on how to replace the screen with the repair kit? Or has anyone self-repaired the screen successfully?
I'll have the chance to either get a new HD2 (and sell the broken one), the Hero or perhaps the Nexus One so I want to see if it is possible to do a cheap fix and get a new toy.

Broken screen, what do i do?

Thing is, somehow during the day I got a couple of cracks in the oled panel. At first the cracks didn't show much, but this didn't last. The cracks spreads out from the L on the HTC keyboard. And renders half the screen purple.
Now what do I do, first off I would love it if someone posted a link to the stock rom and a way to get the standard recovery dialogue. Then as I live in Norway how do I send it to htc. I have contacted them, but haven't gotten any answers yet.
At last i know I could easily search for these, but I am away from home, and would like to flash a stock Rom before my screen dies entirely

here is the original shipping tutorial with all the links you probably need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
hope everything works out with htc
Thanks alot, i finally got home. Just in time. The entire screen is now purple, the lower right corner is now black and unreadable. damn. I think i will attempt to repair it myself, saw a couple of replacement lcds on the net. Will use the ifixit guide i think. But atleast it is backt to stock now, so if HTC can help me tomorrow it is all ready to ship.
no problem and if you look in the Nexus general section there have been a lot of people with cracked screen problems so you have a pretty good chance of htc helping you out as long as there is no evidence of you having dropped your phone.

Relocked boot loader after HTC repair

So I've never posted here before but been using the tips and tricks from the MDA all the way through nexus one.
Anyway, last Wednesday night i had a few too many drinks and my phone suffered a cracked LCD.
Sent my phone to HTC and what came back was a COMPLETELY stock, LOCKED boot loader. still my phone, because i marked the phone's internals with my initials before i sent it out. I called HTC and they said my phone still has a warranty.
just an FYI
Anyone else experience this?
What "internals" did you mark? Most likely it's not the same phone.
Could be same phone, different motherboard.
a referb motherboard would make some sense, I just marked the internal battery tray area with some initials.
This may be a silly question, but wouldn't my device #s be different if they changed out the motherboard? everything still matches the original imei and s/n both on the physical placard and in adb...
Let me know if this is a dumb question...
but why would they replace the mobo in response to a cracked AMOLED screen?

my guess is they probubly flash the whole phone back to stock for testing. Its easier to troubleshoot when you eliminate all outside variables. They prob replaced the screen, used a .img file to flash everything back to stock including the SPL, which would account for the relocked bootloader, and tested to make sure the new screen was working correctly. Am i correct in assuming that all your apps and settings were reset too?

Your not the first to have a re-locked bootloader. Everyone that sent their phone in for repair gets their bootloader re-locked.

Second this.
I've sent mine in twice now for dust..etc.
Both times the same phone has been returned with a locked bootloader (for about 5 mins) ;-)

I sent my unlocked bootloader back and HTC gave me a replacement for free. They didn't charge me anything. They even deemed it as a "software issue".
so u can send ur phone in for the dust under the screen? Whats the turn around on that. And Id be pissed if they re locked my ****. I dont wanna do all that again. Id have to tell them not to ...lol
My dust isnt bad.. only noticeable when screen the screen is in sleep mode in a well lit place.
HTC has absolutely the best customer service I have ever dealt with...

I agree with you
Hey me too!+++++
Iam a rough kinda guy and thought a gell case would do for protection so i took it to work and didnt even know i dented the back where the sim card is at with a sledge hammer!..bamm SOOOO I cracked the inside of the guts in the phone.. and sent it in for repairs right? I told the HTC tech that I had dust under the screen which I did and told em that the the screen crack from the inside was from constient temp change.... they charge me 130 to fix and I told them to keep the f**cking phone cuz when I had it ,it was all dusty and those bend test and all the videos of it being rugged was **** and was always swichin 3g and ****. so 2 days later I get my phone back .and looks ****in brand new.. the best part is 2 days later after I got it back theres an extra 150 in my account and its from google .130+20 cuz the tech hold fee.. sick uh?
So, if it still somehow the same phone, could it be possible that they simply reflashed something on top of the phone to relock its bootloader?
Meaning it IS possible.

Of course it possible. We just don't have the right SPL.

[Q] Screen crack and bleed

Hello
As you can tell I'm a noob so be gentle
My son dropped his sensation xl beats and cracked the screen and now he has a black bleed which I presume means the LCD is also stuffed. Thought I was fine as its insured but surprise surprise I called the ins company and told them what happened and they won't pay out as he is 15. No one mentioned the age when I insured it so that will teach me not to read the small print:crying:
When he first smashed the screen I ordered a digitiser on eBay as was going to change it myself after looking at tutorial but now I see the bleed I think it's a whole LCD job. What do you guys and gals think?
I've looked at screen repairs and its well over £100. The phones still under a year old and has been back to htc twice due to lock button and case issues and they still failed to complete it properly the first time but this obviously a user error so can't even go there.
Any suggestions please?
Ohh crayky!!! To be honest with u mate u basically said what lots of us would suggest u. It's Very nasty what the company said really, would be fuman mate. I think I personally would not bother as u could mess up more while ur trying to replace the LCD part too. If u got money to pay that much money to repair, u could easily save some more pennies and get a second hand on ebay as the praces of our XL getting cheaper when u wana buy them second hand!

Thanks for reply. The xl's are going for about £150 on eBay so would probably repair. Can you just confirm that if I can see a black bleed its more than just a digitiser/glass?
Does the phone powers up? I'm not technician myself but I think if it does that means black bleed is more then just a digitiser. By the way did they actually gone down to £150!!? That's really crazy cos I actually believe our lovely XL are worth more then that!! Good luck mate.

Yep just called them and awaiting a call back but have checked and I do have accidental cover with a £150 excess
Not having much luck but hey ho!
HTC say they cant give me a quote unitl they look at it but I am looking £100 + but it's looking like its worth it as I have over a year apparently to run on warranty. I thought it was 12 months but its 24 months warranty so if they replace the screen :crying: it bring it back under warranty:good:
well ongoing saga the home ins have a £150 excess and they will on repair with a non HTC repairer so this will invalidate the warranty so I will have to book it in to HTC

Screen replacement :(

Hi guys! Just got a little cracking on my One, any advices how to replace it yourself or where to go to get it done? I've seen a lot of screens on ebay but the price range variety is huge, so I don't want to buy some bad quality screen anyway, if you happened to have the same problem, I would really appreciate it if you give me a practical advice. Thank you!

There is a full disassembly video on YouTube. Unfortunately it is not a simple repair. Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2353895
Then watch the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyrxa23OwME&feature=share&list=UUeI5PxCt2kOVkIHrIb6LH5Q
Then think long and hard over whether it's worth replacing it yourself and voiding your warranty over sending it to HTC and paying the $150 they'll charge you to do it.
