Am I alone here when I say i'd like to be able to dim this thing a lot more, occasionally?
Thus far I can't find a way to do so. Does anyone know of a way to dim the screen beyond the limitations of the brightness settings?

you are not alone, I run at 0% brightness all day and God knows i want even darker at night
Same here. At night i sometimes think the brightness has been turned up. I use at it around 10% during the day and it feels it is way too bright at night

You got there before me Bendoe, yep, Screen Filter works a treat people, just be sure not to set it too low when you first use it, else you won't "see" anything if you do lol.

Also I recommend running a program with a 'night mode'

totally worked!
I am still awaiting my Galaxy Note, but perhaps the following could offer a solution.....
[MOD]Lower Auto-Brightness levels to save battery
This is a mod for the Galaxy S 2 but in theory the method should be ok to apply to the Note. However that said, I have not tried it on the Note (or successfully on my S2 as I always have trouble recompiling the apk) but hopefully it could help some as by applying the mod you can change the default 'lowest value' of auto-brightness from something from around 35 to 5 (on a scale from 0-255) making it light up less in dim environments.

The native web browser has 3 energy saving settings that make the screen even darker than 0 brightness, but there's no such setting for the screen in general. I agree that the screen in this device is incredibly bright, and in complete dark you could turn it down a lot more. I'm typing this by daylight with screen brightness at minimum and I find it enough. Of course you need more if the screen is directly on the sun light, but no screen can compete with a nuclear furnace 1 million km wide.
I don't see why people would want to have such a dim screen on their phone, 10% and below also...
What is the point in having a gorgeous nice and bright Amoled screen only using it at 0% brightness?
It's like me buying a Lamborghini and never going any quicker than 50mph...
The Note has such a wonderful screen and it's such a waste when it's dim most of the time...
My screen is on 90% brightness 24/7 and I get 2-3 days use out the phone.
Running my Note with 10 or 20% will get me an extra day or two out the battery but then it means looking at an ugly, dark & very dim screen...

Maybe because it IS subjectively too bright in certain scenarios? Like at night for example? (The key work being subjectively.)
And for some, the battery life is more important than somewhat nicer looking screen - I find the screen good enough even at low brightness. The colour rendering naturally suffers, but it's not too bad.

A dim screen is not ugly, at least not to my eyes
Haha, I love the screen and even at night I love the colours/brightness to be STRONG.
Any less than 50% brightness is too dark for me..
Maybe it's coz I sit a few feet away from my 32'' LED IPS TV & therefore I'm used to bright screens...
I just tried the screen brightness on 0% and it looks terrible, weak and washed out colours, I dunno how others are saying it's still too bright...
How do you guys do it?

in complete darkness, at 0% this screen is way too bright. it is absolutely terrible for your eyes to look into it when the lights are out and one absolutely needs some way to dim it further. i can tell you that if you think otherwise, you are damaging your eyes and might want to reconsider how you view screens in general.
best,
jason
I sometimes use my phone in bed at night and on the lowest setting the screen is too bright. It lights up the room and makes it difficult for my girlfriend to sleep. So I found some screen dimming apps and I'll use one or more of them at the same time to significantly dim the screen to an acceptable level.
The main one I use is adjustable: BackLightFilter
Others: Screen Filter, Dimmer (Night Mode)
I really wish CyanogenMod was available for the Note. It contains a Render Effect which lets you turn off red, green, blue, or a combination of those from your screen. I'd leave only red on for good night viewing. Anyone know of an apk or other way to implement this function without having it baked into a ROM?

If you are just reading, a book, or xda, it really doesn't matter what the colors are. It is annoying for many to read on a brightly lit screen. This is why the original kindle continues to sell well.
I did the white on black mod for opera and its my preferred browser now.

Excellent, thanks! I even have a home screen toggle for it now, something I wished for on CM7.
Interesting feature in Chrome, tilt scrolling. Taking some time to get used to. Turned it off for now.

It will take some time to get used to it, so for now I have disabled it and possibly enable it again when I have time and patience, a screen protector and case for it. To play with the tilt scrolling feature, in the case I drop it.

I assume you tilt the device up or down and it uses the accelerometer to scroll the page up or down

As I play with th N7, the more impressed I get. Consider, it has 13 sensors; gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetic field, orientation x2, rotation vector x2, linear acceleration x2, gravity xW, ambient light, corrected gyroscope sensor.

Just to know that tilt scrolling is causing wakelocks and battery drains because of that..better to turn it off for now..

It's in Chrome Developer settings. It's when you click on the multiple page button (the little icon in the upper right corner of the browser. Essentially by "flinging," the device, it cycles through the webpages you have open.
Did this feature get sent to file 13?
this is great!!! though it does drain battery.
After watching a YouTube video from the app and I go back to the home screen everything is over exposed. the only fix I found was to lock and unlock the screen again. Anyone else having this problem?
I had noticed this once before when using Google Now but I wasn't aware what had caused it. At first I thought it was just the screen but now that I tested it with a youtube video you're right. When it screws up the colors it is really bad looking in Google Now because GNow relies on such a subtle distinction of colors, like the grey on grey. When the screen is working normally is looks fine but after a youtube video it looks really bad, the two greys meshing together. I'm really glad it's just some software issue. I remember looking at the screen once and thinking man those are some bad colors but the screen is really pretty nice when it's working properly.
Yes i do notice the same thing hoping Google comes with an update fast glad to know is not just me

fingers crossed it's a software problem only...

I'm on stock, not rooted, 4.1.1, and getting this issue usually after watching YouTube or other videos

I'm curious, I'm not seeing any of this and am wondering if you guys are running your screens at full brightness or something.
I have my N7 set to auto most of the time and am not seeing these types of contrast issues.
Sent from my Nexus 7
My Nexus is stock (but unlocked and rooted). I run my Nexus 7 almost all the time at 40% brightness.
I get this over exposed looked after playing most videos. Happens with YouTube, Play Movies, Gallery, pretty much any videos from any source. Turning the screen off and on works. Or I could just wait an minute and watch the screen gradually fade back to normal-ish.
This isn't my only issue though. My screen also seems to be poorly calibrated. Even without the video playback issue, some of my colors are faded, and whites are over saturated all the time.
Don't know if the two issues are related, but I'm going to try exchanging it because some people say theirs doesn't have these issues.
PS. I don't use auto brightness, that makes my screen way too dark (seems my auto brightness setting keeps my Nexus 7 at minimum brightness most of the time).
I have this issue (as well as minor screen separation), but can't replicate it consistently.
I just assumed it was the screen just 'waking up' from full screen mode, it usually goes to normal after about a minute.
Rarely i see a minor screen flicker/ or tearing (sortof like oldschool CRT television flicker on a few scan lines) during this 'recovery'

nope. brightness set to around 25%. like others, I can't always replicate but it usually happens after watching videos. locking and unlocking the device immediately restores normal contrast. This is the only semi issue i have on my n7. it doesn't even bother me that much, knowing it's a simple recovery

the problem lies within the software. perhaps you're a lucky one who is somehow avoiding this problem or you don't notice the problem yet.

I have the same issue with my N7. Android 4.1.1 completely stock, out of the box. It seems to be a problem with the hardware decoder as using software in MX player does not seem to trigger it, but the gallery player does. I see this not just after video playback, but around 5 seconds after starting playback when I begin to notice I'm losing so many details in highlights. A white contrast test on www.lagom.nl clearly shows the horrible detail level. I hope they fix it soon.

I have the same problem but how are you so sure that it is software problem. If it is a software problem then why do you get a screen shot showing no problem when in reality you can see it on your screen that you are indeed having problem on your screen at this very moment.

Another thing is that it only happens if you watch video in full screen. If you watch YouTube video not in full screen i.e. in portrait then there is no problem of over exposed colors.

Does it occur if you watch the free Transformer movie? Just curious since it doesn't for me.
The screen brightness of the One is absolutely nice, and even with power saver settings on it is bright enough for me when playing games, looking at pictures and browsing the web.
But when watching videos on it, which I expected to be awesome due to the great dispay, I was very disappointed. The brightness of the movie itself is very low. I often have to crank up brightness to the max with MxPlayer to enjoy watching it. With the stock player it's the same problem.
Does anybody else have this issue or know what to do about it? It was also mentioned in some german review, I don't really know which one anymore. I'd really like to have this fixed.
Does your brightness change all the time as well? Like I've watching something and the brightness seems to change all the time, it's very subtle but really annoying.
Hmm, not really. With mxplayer the brightness stays pretty much on one low level. Even at 15, which should mean full brightness, and would be very bright on other apps.

It's like I've said before, the htc one is over saturated and while that may look nice at ui level, it throws up issues elsewhere, especially video playback and gaming graphics. There's a reason why Samsung keeps toning down the colour levels with each new model and why Sony stepped away from over saturation completely. The troubles it creates when watching videos and playing games isn't worth the colorful ui you get in return

How is it over saturated? Amoled displays are much more saturated, and this display has much better colours than my washed out Nexus 4.

This would be true if the brightness of games and videos where the same level. They aren't. In games everything is visible and clear but in videos (on the same brightness level) I can't see much.
Prior to upgrading to the latest firmware, I remembered that there was a setting menu that allowed me to disable "adaptive" screen adjustment.
After upgrading, that setting is no where to be found and it's getting annoying to read through anything that has high contrast, as I scroll, the screen gets brighter or darker depending on the content and it's freaking me out.
I do not have root, is there any way to kill it?
Honestly, is everyone satisfied when you're watching a dark movie the brightness lowered even when you have it on max? And when you stop the video the brightness goes back to maximum?
Do I have to make a video of what I am talking about for you guys to understand what I am trying to say? It's really odd.
