I was using Phoenix_Rising_3.5_SM and wanted to flash back to stock to try another ROM. My issue I had is the Side button would not work to get in Download mode. I tried the ADB method (after trying all other method's) which got me into it but ODIN would not flash the phone then so was forced to reboot it, afterwards the phone got stuck on a black screen of a "phone.."orange-triangle "!"..computer" screen and I cant get past it at all.
If there's no easy fix to get it fix it then I can swap the phone under 30-day and hopefully have no issues from them about it. I was going to say I was running the OTA and the phone locked up and went to that screen after, but currently the phone has Phoenix installed and update.zip also the phoenix rom install file.
...I have been running Cognition, Perception and others fine and the downloader method worked fine with vol - and cable, but ever since Phoenix 3.5 rom the normal downloader method never worked and just gets to the battery charging screen...
jig search for it. Cheap and easy
Your gonna need a jig.

Thanks for the help guys, the Jig using tape did it, phone is flashing with ODIN now. It saved me a 45 min drive to closest AT&T store.

Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that you may need to use the Froyo Odin (JI6).

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.

Tried Odin and Heimdall One-Clicks - unsuccessful. I'm think I will need the stock Eclair firmware file with Odin and the pit file.

You ever get this to work? - I'm in a similar situation. all flashes 'work' but get stuck at ATT on boot. Not sure Eclair is an option or not since mine is a refurbished phone that started on 2.2

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

So here't the full background, it's not long, please read:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-bricked-my-sgs-wonder-what-i-did-wrong.2032/
Long story short, it looks like I bricked my SGS when trying to flash with Odin, even though I followed the tutorial very closely. When I power up the phone, it just gives me the image with phone, exclamation mark and PC on it. It does, however, go into download mode when powered up with VolDown and center button.
How do I save it? Do I need the JIG (God, please say no! )
Have you tried reflashing with odin.
Jig is only needed when you cant get into download mode.
Also i just looked inside the darky rom topic.
Have you flashed the jvk rom first with the bootloaders?
Edit: as said below. If you gonna reflash, flash a stock rom. Not the darky rom. First priority is to make your phone work.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, you have download mode.
Now, fire up Odin and load a few rom files into it, connect the phone and see if the PC still recognises it. (Do not flash, Just a test)
If so...
Flash a stock rom.
Somehow, I was able to flash it with Odin in Download Mode this time. Phew! I read somewhere that the flash might fail if You're using wrong USB port. At first I connected my phone to a eSATA/USB combo port, and for the second time (after brick) I tried a normal USB 2.0 port in my laptop. Maybe that's what made the difference, I have no idea.
Anyway, I'm running stock Samsung 2.3 rom and am trying to install Darky's 10.0 RC3 on it - I am running into some problems, but thankfully they're much less serious than the brick that I was able to fix.
Thanks for Your help!
I ran into similar problems last week. A rom wouldn't flash, so I gave it an hour and it proceeded nowhere. Had to pull the plug on it.
Sometimes it just takes a few times plugging and unplugging repeatedly until it just happens to get detected by Windows. Maybe just a bit of luck too
Congrats on your recovery.
Just wondering which stock 2.3 rom did you use and which Odin setting you used to get your phone up and working again.
Here is my post / problem, seems similar to yours
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020223
Thanks
I had the same issue like warnec on my first darkyy flash, finally everything went fine...don't worry!
just try to reflash with odin (maybe going for a stock version first is a good idea), be sure to do everything as mentioned in the guides out there. and be sure your computer works stable, maybe you want to quit some tasks in the background (however it should work even without but something crashed my odin once...)
Reflash with Odin to make your phone work again. I suggest using a stock 2.2.1/2.3.3 ROM. It is important that it consists of the 512.pit file, a PDA file, a Phone file and a CSC file. The ROM must have bootloaders included!
Now, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
Start Odin and load all the files. Tick 'Repartition'.
Start your phone in Download Mode by pressing Vol-Down, Home and Power.
Connect it to your PC and wait for Odin to say 'Added!'.
Now hit Start, wait 2-3 minutes until it is done and your phone should succesfully reboot!

Had to take the phone into Bell. Waiting on return of it and currently using a loaner HTC Desire Z from Bell.
I am working on a friend's captivate (att) and I have him running cognition ROM right now. Unfortunately, it still sucks and he hates his phone. I want to flash cyanogenmod to the phone, but I need to restore it to stock first (I think). I am trying to use AIO tool to flash the phone to stock, but ODIN hangs when I start it. Is there another way to switch ROMS without flashing back to stock first? I don't have to flash to stock with my Optimus V, so why it the Captivate such a PITA phone to mess with? Please help me. I am tired of my buddy complaining about his phone every day.

If the phone doesnt have the gb bootloaders then you can flash CM7 using any kernel with clockworkmod recovery.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I really wouldn't recommend CM7 if your friend isn't into phone development on his own, especially the nightly builds. However, if you're dead set on doing that, just do it without the AIO tool. Flash to stock with Odin one-click and root the phone some way (superoneclick is preferred) and then just follow the steps. Well, you actually don't require stock so long as your phone is rooted and not running GB bootloaders, but it's always safe to just go back to stock anyways.
For some reason though, ODIN will not flash to stock. Sometimes it will get as far as flashing modem.bin, but then it just hangs. It made it all the way to filesystem.rfs once, but again, it hung up. What is going on here? Is it my PC or do these phones just do that?
It could be a variety of problems. I'd reinstall the drivers and ODIN on your computer, because something may not have installed correctly. I know that I've never had any issues going back to stock with ODIN.
Now after failing so many times to flash the phone, I can't even get it to go into download mode anymore. I am using the volume up+volume down and plug usb method, but that all of a sudden will no longer start the phone. I am afraid that I may have bricked it. Any ideas?

Try the ADB method, instructions on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
If all else fails, building a jig is very easy and cheap. My best guess is you had something installed incorrectly on your computer and when ODIN tried to do its thing it froze and then "software-bricked" your friend's captivate.
I have searched for the last 24 hours on this site for any mention of this problem and found nothing. I apologize if it has been covered elsewhere and would appreciate a link if I should be there instead of here. I am new to this forum.
I have an AT&T Captivate that I bought used for my wife. It was rooted and running some version of non-official Gingerbread when I got it (so it had been messed around with).
I have never been able to get into RECOVERY mode having tried every conceivable button and timing sequence at least 1 million times (3-button neutered?). I also have Android SDK installed on my PC and can send the "adb reboot recovery" command but it locks up at the AT&T screen and won't go any further so the PC is talking to the phone but the phone refuses to obey. Yes I have tried different USB ports and cables, un/reinstalling drivers, etc. The weird thing is that I can get into DL mode easily with the batt out, vol+/-,USB cable trick.
I originally took the phone all the way back to a stock Froyo ROM via Odin which appeared to work fine (but still no recovery mode) and then flashed to GB 2.3.5 with Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489 via "kh3_heimdall_cwm-One-Click_GB_2_3_5.jar"
Phone works OK now but I still can't get into RECOVERY mode. Unless I am mistaken, there are no ROMS available later than GB that can be flashed via Odin- all of the later ROMs need to be installed from recovery mode. The point of all this is that I want to try upgrading to ICS or JB but can't figure out how to do it without a way to get into recovery mode.
So the question is: How can I get recovery mode to work?
And: How can I update the ROM with no way to get into Recovery mode? Is it even possible?
Returning the phone is obviously out of the question as it is "obsolete" and I am not the original owner.
Thank you for any helpful insights.

Since you have no problems getting into download mode I suggest you start by going to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843 Go to the third post and download the Odin one click of KK4 with bootloaders.
After you do the one-click back to stock go to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477&highlight=corn+kernel and get the odin flashable version of 7.06 or 7.0A and if you don't already have Odin you'll of course need that too. Get yourself back into download mode and flash that kernel and it should give you back your recovery via the 3 button combo.
Worked! (eventually...sort of...)

m1batt1,
Thank you sooo much! It ALMOST worked!
- DL'ed Odin 1-click KK4 w/BL's as suggested, ran it, it failed and semi-bricked my phone... (phone--/!\---comp). Doh!
-Figured you were on the right track so DL'ed "I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from 4-2ndtwin's post further down the same thread.
-after much anxiety and messing about to get it to connect, it successfully flashed!
-For the FIRST TIME EVER, I can get into recovery mode!
-followed up with corn kernel 7.06 as suggested with no problems
-now that the phone works as advertised, time for JB!
The funny thing is, I went back to stock ROMs several times and recovery never worked until now... go figure...
^
...then it had to be that KK4 one click in that 3rd post that fixed the prob.

I'm glad it got you back up and running! Now get your JB flash on! There are plenty to choose from for our "ancient" captivates.
One word of advice though. Coming from the point you're at now any JB ROM you flash will likely knock you into a boot loop on the first flashing attempt. Nothing is wrong just three button into recovery and flash again.

Thanks a million guys! Slim bean 2.9 up and running!
It Works!
Got to Slim Bean 2.9 through Cyanogen 9.1 and installed the Slim_GApps.
4-2ndtwin: Thanks for the suggestion to back up the efs folder. I hadn't done that before and now I am feeling VERY lucky that my phone still works at all! It lowered my stress level appreciably plus it was good practice using SDK.
m1batt1: Thanks for the heads up on the double flashing of JB ROM! It saved considerable unnecessary panic (although it was still somewhat unnerving)!
Consider both your thank you buttons righteously whacked! :good:
Hi, I've recently come across some trouble with my friend's captivate...(I, myself, own a Vibrant and have been an active flasher for the 2 years I've had it)
I was trying to get gingerbread bootloaders when I realized I was not on a stock 2.1/2.2 rom(I was on a 4.0 rom) and it ended up bricking my phone.
Fortunately I could still enter download mode and I then proceeded to odin back to stock JF6 firmware when I found myself waiting over an hour for the process to complete(the bar did not move at all on odin), so I decided to pull the plug and that's where everything went wrong. I've tried entering download mode but absolutely nothing happens.
TL;DR Version: Cannot enter download mode, complete black screen(No phone icon, no code, nothing)
I was wondering what the Captivate community suggests what I should...
Should I perhaps stop by Radioshack tomorrow and try this cheap jig process?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
I would appreciate anything to get this device back to life right, thank you all for your time.
If u do have some signs of life, like when u plug it into a wall charger, then a Jig should work. But if no signs of life, then it probably is a hard brick. And if so, then check out mobiletechvideos.com for the repair.
