[Q] possible returning to sgs - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!I was an owner of a galaxy s phone and thinking of trading my desire Z, for a galaxy s again in case a few of the issues the phone had, are fixed by now..
so here i go :
1) does the new voodoo sharpness fix really make a difference?i used to hate how text looked like when zoomed back when i had sgs..the colour fix seems to be great from the photos i have seen..But does the sharpness hack actually make up for the unused subpixels?
2) has there been any fixes on the GPS scene? With my curent phone i can get gps lock in 5 seconds inside the house..i am not asking for something as insane, but is it possible to get fixes now?
3)have lag fixes evolved the last 3 months?I remember using xda lag fix but the phone still was unresponsive at times..
4)Any cm7 ports for sgs yet?

1. Personally, I don't notice that much of a difference with Voodoo sharpness. You really can't fix it. All PenTile matrix displays look like this.
2. GPS seems to be a hit and miss. I can get a lock in 10 seconds on average.
3. Lag does not exist anymore. Samsung stepped up the rfs with froyo builds, and either voodoo or ultimate lagfix is incorporated in almost every rom and kernel now.
4. CM7 is making great progress. There are still a few issues that need to be resolved, but you can go build it and try it out for yourself right now.

I will rethink about it then..Even when i held my sgs next to my old slcd desire the different was worlds appart..i will still like to hear more opinions please..

Using hardcores kernel seems to make this thing fly, so lag is no longer an issue IMHO.
My gps locks within 10 seconds inside and faster outside, this is using one of the recent modems.
I never had an issue with the sharpness of the display so I can't comment on that front.

Likewise on my SGS

No lag on latest firmware .

Does this really fix the gps problem? I was playing around with the thought to send the phone back to repair.. So is the fix AND the accuracy fixed in gingerbread? So no more 30m offset sometimes and waiting for a fix for minutes?

The problem isn't really with the software, its hardware oriented, so Voodoo sharpness can't really do anything about the "spotty" appearance of the display. This post helps to show the difference between the PenTile matrix used in our phones and a conventional RGB layout.

Yea..i know all about it..silly RGBR system...but if the voodoo hack is in reality as effective as it appears in the photos here

and you guys could confirm this, i am going to trade in for an sgs within the week

Its nowhere near as effective in real life as it is in those pictures. And you have to remember that the photos are simluated. Its likely that a regular screenshot was taken and over sharpened in an image editor like photoshop.
My eyes are very sharp, so thats why I hate reading text on this display(but not a deal breaker, I still love my phone). Other people I know don't see the ""spottiness" at all. In my opinion, if you can see the spottiness because you have good/average eyes, Voodoo sharpness won't really change much for you.

I wouldnt trade super amoled for anything else (except maybe super amoled +). Sure, pentile isn't super sharp but its a small price to pay for superb contrast and great colours. Trade it and try hardcores kernel with sharpness + color fix.

Question about lag and GPS

Hello,
i want to buy this phone and I have second thoughts because I 've read complains about the GPS performance.
Also I ve heard that the phone is laggy...
Is there any fix to these problems?

About gps, I have had no problems at all with gps. Lock within 10-20 sec. I think it is from piece to piece. About lags. Stock rom is a little bit laggy, but there is so many options to get rid of it. For example lagfix, flash different roms or custom roms.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
You did not say which stock rom is laggy, though.
Lag was already gone in 2.2.1 and SGS has 2.3.3 or so these days.
About GPS: it dramatically improved, I think it happened with Gingerbread. You get a quick fix and accuracy is not as bad as it used to be.
Still, from what I heard, the GPS is supposed to be more accurate with the SGS II.
If I would have to buy a new Samsung smartphone I'd heavily consider the SGS II, especially since the price difference isn't that high.

Lag was already gone in stock rom without lagfix? I can compare with CM7 and in stock lag is still there, but not as much as in JPA (2.2)
GPS: is no issue at all,it does a good job but if needed you can have apps like faster fix for more accuracy and fast locking.
LAG: very difficult to define but it's an old story, with new firmwares no issue.
In my personal opinion, choice of buying a galaxy S also depends on how you want to use your phone, if you are little bit on tech side, you will love this phone. If you don't want to mess with tech jargon's at all, look for something else than Android.

Lagginess can be fixed by flashing different ROMs / kernels.
GPS is poor, so depending on your purposes. If you want to find your location on google maps, check the distance - then it is fine. But if you want to use for car navigation, then you should buy a good external GPS unit with bluetooth and pair it with Bluetooth GPS for instance. I used SGS for in car navigation for one week and it was a disaster sometimes and average at other times, so very inconsistent / unreliable.
I've now stopped using my tomtom as my sgs performs really well in the car, I can normally get 5-10m accuracy
i still lag a bit using Regina 3D Launcher, not so smooth tho as for like iPhone 4s, i hate those phone tho.. they just gather information from other phones like LG, HTC Samsung etc. >:O
OP, IT IS laggy for sure. Stock roms are such a crap, they're barely usable. Cyanogen is better, but still, if you want an Android phone, better take Nexus S or some of the HTC ones.

[Q] Galaxy Note: The amount of its laggyness?

Hello Fellow Members,
Okay I have been reading a lot of complaints about the Note being laggy and frankly even I came across a couple of Galaxy Notes at two different malls/stores on display and they both lagged like anything. Although the lag was for just a couple of seconds but it was very frustrating. I noticed the lag throughout in the OS, right from swiping the home screens to scrolling in the settings or scrolling the browsing or while opening the apps. (Any app). And it became even more frustrating to see a previous model (Galaxy s2) working as smooth as melting butter. I operated them side by side and, man the difference was noticeable, seriously NOTICEABLE. I was soooooooooo disappointed. I had the cash with me but I was just not willing to believe, such a high spec’d phone would lag . And eventually I came from the store without purchasing one .
I have read on XDA forums also where many G-Note users have complained about their experiences of Galaxy Note being laggy. Hence, I would “request” you all to please make short videos of your galaxy Notes, upload on youtube and share the link with us here, so that someone who wants to buy a NOTE would see the amount of laggyness of the phone and then decide, whether this lag is acceptable or inacceptable for him/them. Please show the scrolling on contacts, S-pen notes, swiping between home screens, scrolling the browser etc.
Please guys, come forward and do so, as I youtubed a lot but couldn’t find videos showing the laggyness of Note. All videos are filled with how smooth and fast the NOTE is. And seeing that, I went to purchase one but….
P.S: Rooting isn’t an option for me as this will void the warranty and I don’t want to void my warranty. Hence no rooting
Also, people say that ICS will solve the issue. I have seen on other phones that initially it does make the device faster but with daily usage, it becomes same as it used to be with the previous version of OS.
Rooting will void your warranty but but if done in correct way you can unroot and get it back.
Older firmware were slow and laggy but LC1 and LC2 are smooth.
Have you tried V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts before ? You'll need root though.
These littile thing inject steroids in your phone.
Wait wait wait wait.
You have used such difficult Jargons of Andriod world that I am just not able to catch you up .
Okay, as you have mentioned, V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts will require Rooting my device (although I have no idea what are V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts), but tell me these LC1 and LC2 are firmware updates, right? And they can be updated "without" rooting the device. Isn't it?
And this update will make G-Note blazing fast, like s2?
Guys, please respond and help.

Dont compare Note and S2. The same processor and same GPU in S2 powers a smaller screen with less pixels and less DPI. Here in Note you have the same processor and GPU power a huge HD screen with the best DPI in business. Also all the apps are built on hdpi resolution while the note is xhdpi resolution so the apps and launchers tend to get laggy. Also there is no hardware acceleration supported in much apps. I am using ICS Stunner and using it on 240 dpi which is hdpi resolution and its silk smooth. Butter!
And i dont have time to make videos. So if you can then take my word. If not then each one to his own
Cheers!! Enjoy your Note!!
You don't need to be rooted to update firmware.
Use pc odin or built-in OTA (Over The Air - Phone updates itself using 3G/WiFi) update feature.
update to the latest stock firmware released in 2012.....should b much smoother. But we're all waiting for ics which should be out very soon.
advice: go bak to the shop......remove all widgets on homescreen and/or change wallpaper to static nd try. I have noticed that some live wallpapers and widgets cause lagginess. I usually remove everythng from the homescreen and start adding them 1 by 1 and checkng.....one widget sometimes is the culprit.
Ics should smooth everythng as some have reported.
Owned a Note and 7.7
7.7 slightly slower than Nexus, Note is laggy, esp when not turned off for days.

I am not saying it should run games which require excellent acceleration or requires immense power from GPU, as I am not into heavy mobile games. All I require is butter smooth execution of day-to-day usage. Be it scrolling contact, scrolling web page, swiping through 10 application screens or swiping 7 home screens.

Your response is somewhat relieving I must tell you. But the comment under your post is disturbing . I mean I want a butter smooth tock ROM device and after paying $607 for G-Note, I don’t want to regret and speed it a “very” essential part of my checklist of a smart phone.

I never specifically told about games. To have everything buttery smooth u require hardware acceleration which gpu provides in the apps browser and launchers. So gpu is not just for games. Now you got why i told you all that above. To have everything running smooth on such big screen and resolution u require hardware acceleration. Ever noticed lag in all third party launchers? Its becoz they don't have hardware acceleration. The stock TW launcher is partially hw accelerated so still runs somewhat smooth.
The original dpi of Note is 321
BOOMED from my BOMBASTIC NOTE
Tbh you can't really blame the note for being a tad laggy since it is basically a computer and all computers ( even the best) will come across a type of lag within its lifetime.

Well then that sucks
here is a tip to the op.. You will find 99% of all problems you look for.. If you didnt look, you would not know there are problems.
The key to happiness in life is being happy with what you have and setting your expectations ot a reasonable level..
If you dont need the large screen, go buy something else. If you do need the large screen, then you have no choice but the note..
so either relax and enjoy your note or be paranoid about this and every other device on the planet, and buy every new device as it comes out and drive yourself into a frenzy of despair about this problem, that problem, this issue that issue until you realise all this agony and money has not fixed a single thing in your life, you are stressed, depressed and you end up a bankrupt nuerotic..

This device has NOTHING bad in it.. Just the LAG LAG LAG!
Nice post though! Loved it.
I am using stock GB and I have almost no lag. Maybe you should make a video and show us what lag you are talking about.
I am using stock rom (gingerbread) at the moment and experience none of the lag you refer to. I also tried some of the ics roms and also no lag.
The only time my phone 'hesitates' is sometimes when I unlock it as it switches from widget locker to lock screen. Now as it is a 3rd party app doing it, I can hardly blame the note. I love my note and even got rid of my galaxy nexus and asus tf101 when i got the note.

It's on the latest firmware available in my country (Malaysia)
All I can think is, Gingerbread is just far inferior to ICS or Honeycomb. Nokia Lumia is a lot faster too (hope that word is not banned here)
Then again, some items images/video captured in 7.7 is only 3.2mp vs 8mp.

[Q] Exchanging SII with NOTE __ Worth it?

Hi there!
Have been using SII for about a year and a half now.
I don't know how but recently i have got tired of this 4 inchy and
really want a bigger screen.
And I'm getting an offer to exchange it with galaxy note. On paper galaxy note seems
ted powerful and with a better display as well.
But what I'm really concerned about is the real life difference in performance. I have heard from some
friends that NOTE is actually on a bit slower side than SII.
Would love to hear from guys who have used both the phones and please suggest should I go for the exchange.
Thanks.

It's barely noticeable slower. Specially in screens transitions and scrolling through lists that have images.
Maybe because of the higher resolution of the screen.
But in my opinion totally worth the upgrade
The bigger screen makes watching videos and playing games an amazing experience
Total worth the upgrade mate.
Go ahead and do it. Good luck

Thats what I'm really concerned about. The reslotion of the galaxy note is almost 70 to 80 percent more than galaxy SII.
Theoretically that should mean galaxy note require around 1.8 to 2 Ghz dual core processor if I'm right to perform as snappier as galaxy SII.
And that's why there's a lag in UI and general use I guess.
I really like the s pen and the screen size.
But I do feel HD resolution is too much of an asking for a dual core.
Please correct and guide me if I'm wrong.
Waiting for your comments eagerly.
As far as I know, the pixels are "moved around" by the GPU , not the CPU.
So the processor has nothing to do with the lag.

The pixels are rendered by the GPU, not the CPU, but yes, they are also the same, and it's the reason for the difference.
It can get pretty smooth tough. Don't worry about performance. You won't have any trouble

Got Note finally. And after a month of use I don't think I would look back. Cheers.
Yes, the note is slower than s2. I also can't use android 4.1.2 as it's extremely laggy (this may happen only with my note).
The phones screen size makes it impossible to comfortably use this phone with one hand, so You mostly have to use both of Your hands.
If You're aiming for a bigger screen or for the spen's precision I would definitely recommend You this phone.
I must say I wouldn't go back to s2,as the spen is very important for me.
What do You want from this phone?

I really like the spen. But the lag problem is an issue with me too. I flashed indian version first and a few days back
I flashed the Uk xxlt9 firmware(obviously aftera full wipe). But I dont see much difference in those 2 versions. I guess jelly bean
is really too much for this phone(atleast stock one). I tried cyanogenmod too but I really missed the neat built in features of the spen so I
moved back to stock jelly bean. But its really annoying when a 200 dollar phone beats it in benchmarks and general use. Or may be I'm
expecting too much off this device.
After a month or so of use.. This is what I feel-
Stock jelly bean- Battery life is good(as long as u keep the screen off )
Typing and general UI is way too laggy.
Touchwiz is beautiful ( I know am the only one but I really like the design and transitions)
Spen is nicely integrated and snote is nicely designed. I use it a lot personally (only after it opens a decade to open)
Cyanogenmod 10.3 nightlies- Fluid and really usable. Sleek.
Flat and boring untill you dont use a theme.
Camera not at par with stock jb.
Huh.. A lot of writing i guess. These were my observations. But what I really want is stock experience with cyanogenmod like speed.
Is there anyone who's in same sort of situation like me.

Finally someone that has the same problem with JB.
Man, I usually have 120-150 apps installed (I have to have them) and any JB ROM is UNUSABLE for me. Even stock JB laggs, after restoring my apps it's....agh If the phone wasn't so expensive I would throw it against the wall. Why did JB work on SGS2 like a charm and on the Note it sucks so much?
That's why I had to use ICS. It doesn't have the Spen hovering & scrolling features (which I really miss ) , but it's fast and almost lag free.
However CM10.2 is the fastest I've used so far. I'm really astonished, it's a beta ROM and it's way better than official one (WTF?).
I bought this phone for the Spen and that's why I'm using it a lot. I only hope that the Spen won't start to fell out of the phone as it's getting easier to take it out.
I think I will never switch from the note series, as the spen is veeery important for me (well, maybe when there will be some other phone with thin stylus )

Yeah, give me too hehe.
I would like to see all those hovering etc. stuff. Maybe it will be possible if official 4.3 comes out to note 2 and then it will be ported to our note.
But I don't think so
And the throwing part.. I feel exactly like you.. Lost brothers? Lol
I dont see 4.3 coming to this lovely device anytime soon. But the main point here shouldn't be just running after the latest android version. It should be making the current firmware as best as it can be. How come GB and ICS be faster than JB, no one knows except samsung or god. Lol

Ok, the older android versions don't require so good specs, but there shouldn't be such a big difference between ics and jb. I hope the notes 2 official android 4.3 will be ported to our old note 1.

The HTC One

Hey guys I'm in need of an upgrade and I think the HTC One is the answer!
I was wondering if you could please give me feedback on your experience so far.
All I know about the cons like
Can't change battery
No SD card...
So how is the battery life etc??
Thanks

Battery life is normal. Like another smartphone. Not as good as SIV but normal. Day and a half with normal use... Is no SD card, bad thing but 32 or 64 gb is a good amount of space. Performance for me is the best smartphone. Is absolutely awesome .
Buuut camera... Is a not bad camera, but like you can read one time and another in this forum, camera have a lot of issues and problems....

like already said, with normal use you'll get 1,5 days out of it. the camera issues are not present on every device (purple dust on very dark pictures) and we don't exactly know if it's a software or a hardware issue. we'll see if it got fixed when 4.3 comes out officially.
i exachanged my i9500 to one 802w dual sim and batt life is THE SAME. That means in 9500 batt life is worse that htc one international.
I have the black HTC One and my girlfriend has the silver.
Both running Android Revolution HD 21.0 and Elemental X kernel 5.2
Both our phones will last a whole work day starting at 9am and ending around 8pm. She's a real estate agent so she's always on phone calls and I do IT so I use mine primarily for scheduling, web browsing and text.
Phone is fast, camera is absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend this phone enough!
I've had mine for a little over a month and love it.
I find that the 32gb is enough for my apps, music and some movies (even if you need some more space there are external storage options).
I haven't had any serious issues with the camera in my device although focousing in low light can be a hastle - by the way the burst feature is fantastic. Something to be noted although the camera is only 4mp the quality of those pixels is very good. HDR is a really great option too if you have a steady hand or a place to rest your phone while you take the photo.
I had a bit of trouble wraping my head around the Sense UI but Apex fixed that in a jiffy. On the subject of Sense I do have a slight fondness for the lock screen and use it.
Now I will be the frist to admit this was a huge step up from my old LG Optimus Black but this is a serious piece of hardware.
I have nothing else to add on what's already been said expect there is a way around the purple haze in low light camera shots. All I do is lower the iso in the camera app to 100 or 200 and use the flash. Works a treat till a fix comes along. This doesn't work in HDR camera mode though as the iso isn't adjustable in HDR.
Apart from the above the phone is fantastic and feels well built. Take the plunge and get one, you won't regret it!

[Issues] Camera Overheating and Stop working!

Hey Guys, How are you today?
I am angry as hell, again!
I find another problem with the Z1, I can't believe it. The first one is Touch Screen now If you using the camera continuously for 3, 4 minutes the camera crash and stop working.
I think we all have this problem but not everybody know about that. So make this test like me.
First effect of camera overheating: Before use the camera run Quadrant or AnTuTu Benchmark, with Quadrant you will get around 21600, Antutu 33800. Run the camera and start making pictures with 20mpx for 1 minute, make a pictures with any option. If you are luck the camera will keep going but after that run the Benchmarks again.
After using the Camera you will get around 17000 with Quadrant and 29000 with AnTuTu. 5000 points each less after using the camera.
The real problem is if you will using the camera for 3 minutes, for example you are in holiday and want make pictures, for sure this will take some minutes, the camera will crash.
This is normal for you? I think is something wrong..
I filmed a 15 minute show at 1080p with no issue, the issue is with your device,it is not something that affects all z1's

Get a replacement, or get another smartphone altogether.
Now hear me out!
Your are inducing this.
The phone is sealed and armed with the latest chipset.
Suprised it gets hot?
I'm happy it lets you know, so the camera doesn't take damage.
It's a pointless test
You seem like you maybe would be happy with something else?
Is this something you face often (like just gaming a few minutes and then switching to camera), and other combinations which you do not intentionally set off?
If all the other symptoms you are reporting all over the forum are not very overplayed, and indeed crippling your device, the outfall is the same, no?
Get a replacement or try differently!
I've taken recordings lasting over ten minutes and used way longer fiddeling with the camera app going, and not a single crash to date.

My friend, I just reporting the issue which people have the right to know. Everybody know if you don't want any problem get an iPhone.
Am I the unlucky here with this phone? Fine, that 's why I am here, I am here for help and share.
You are here only to complain about what people saying.
I am only disappointed and I don't want to give up on this High-End Phone but you don't help me even a bit.
Someone probably will be worry if the phone get hot, have issue or the camera will crash in some circumstances, so to understand that your are free to test the phone, like I do, to understand how use it with any option.
Am I wrong?

You are perfectly allowed to do whatever you want with it, as you bought it, it is yours to meddle with
It is however when you start to post your uncertain findings and experiences as almost facts, that it becomes misleading.
This could hardly help people who are already confused about buying this phone.

On XDA with any device this will be a problem . You know why we are here for. We are here to solve issues, so if somebody want to buy a device should not come in Q&A, Hepl & Troubleshooting, right?
I believe in the potential of XDA, like all the time, so if you don't want people be confused and misleading, help me or tell me is not a problem my camera.

BTW, my camera crashed after 3 minutes, what I wrote in bold was just an example when you use the camera more than that. (3 minutes)

I do think it is important to shed light on all the issues and let the public get the full picture.
I'm on my second sony phone now (Didn't really fancy anything sonyericsson made) and wouldn't consider myself a fanboy.
My next device could be anything. RIght now however, I personally don't like the alternatives
If a problem gets mentioned alot, it is better to bump old threads, than make new ones all the time.
Just for the sake of consistency. Helps more when trying to gauge if an issue is widespread, instead of it being scattered all over.
I do not wish to drag this further, as my intention is not to be mean to you.
Also I am swaying off topic and sidetracking your thread.
@benziii, Ok but I really do not hear about this issue on XDA, I sarching on Google and few information I get and 1 video on Youtube, and actually the video reflect the exact same issue as mine.

So it's software problem related?
I took +- 35 fast photos and the error didnt come, but the phone heats up a bit.
Maybe is not meant to be so stressed.
I have taken more than 1000+ photos with my Z1 (The Sandisk Extreme Plus 64GB MicroSDXC is amazing), and I have yet to see it crash. *touch wood*
Yes, it gets hot after a while, but I've once taken 200+ photos for an event without shutting off the camera app or resetting the phone to cool it down, so it was on for nearly an hour but it never crashed and the battery held up fine, though I look funny in a sea of ppl with their fancy DSLRs.
So I assume you got a faulty phone and should get it replaced.
no probs here, can use the camera all day long and never crashes, is it possible you have many apps running in the background/.
It's not the camera. It happens due to heat. So to cooldown the processor, it will down clocked automatically. For example, If you run few benchmarks & then you start the camera, after a while you will get an error message from the camera. I had that problem. Benchmarks will stress the processor & GPU 100%.

I was imagine that but I get the error when I was outdoor making pictures. That day I didn't run any benchmarks. Is not the camera, ok, is due to heat. Just worry why my phone get heat and get error just using the camera.
