Hi Yesterday my phone did 1 sleep of death, well today when I woke up it did not want to get up, so I took the battery out plugged it back in and it started fine.
This is the first time this has happened and I have no idea if it is really a sleep of death ( I have had the phone since June 2010 ) so it is still under Samsung warrante , no idea if I should send it to the factory for a repair OR Just chill because it has only happened once any comments are appreciated.
There are several threads about the random shutdown issue. Both at&t and samsung are aware of the issue. If your phone is a 10.06 build, it would certainly be susceptible.
My first phone was a10.06 build purchased in august. It had its first random shutdown in late november. From that point the random shutdowns were gradually increasing in frequency.
I asked for a warranty replacement by phone since the nearest service center is about a two hour round trip for me. The first rep I spoke to forwarded me to a samsung specialist who assured me that the replacement phone would not have the random shutdowns.
This was just before the official 2.2 update came out, so my new phone, which is a 10.08 build, came with jh7 installed and had fully working gps.

Did it not power up when u pressed and held the power button. Or were u forced to pull out battery?

Do u have any UC or UV settings set on ur phone. These two are possible reasons for not responding to power button.

There was a thread here somewhere that had in the first post a reproduction of a letter to at&t service techs advising about the problem of the random shutdowns. In that letter there was an explanation that if the phone has an ime number below a certain value then it might be succeptible. I believe if I remember correctly that affected phones could be 1008 or earlier. You'd have to search out that thread to find out what number you have to be below.
On my phone, when it turned off, I could turn it back on with the power button. I only had to pull the battery on one or two occasions. But others have reported in the various threads having to pull the battery to turn the phone back on and still replacing it through warranty. On my phone, I tried everything I could think of to correct the problem, but nothing helped. First, follow up leads like the one from diablo about over clock/under volt, or anything else that might be causing this. Then, maybe you should watch it for a few weeks and see what happens. If you have the random shutdown problem, it will keep happening.
If you purchased the phone from at&t, then they will replace it under warranty if it has the problem. If not, I guess you have to go to samsung for warranty replacement. In that case, I think you have to send your phone in to them first.

it's OC UV
OC = over clocking
UV = under volting

Just wondering if anyone has had any thoughts about a software fix for the poweroff on sleep the captivates have? I'm aware AT&T has all but issued a recall for them (basically if you complain, you get another one) - but I bought mine through a local reseller here in AU.
They've offered to take the unit to have a look at it, but if i'm just going to get a similar model back (with the same fault) - its not overly desirable.
I read something somewhere of a market fix that made sure the phone never went to sleep (thus hosed through battery) - anything outside of that?
This seems to have worked for me. This basicallly doesn't let the CPU drop below 200mhz, thus doesn't let it fall completely asleep. It does drain a little more battery but not severely. I wasn't one of the ones that had the shut down all the time, but it happened once a week or so. Since doing this, I haven't had a single shut down.

I sent mine in (had random shutdowns while in sleep) and it was a 1006 got back a 1008 and I've had zero problems. They also ship you the new phone first so you aren't phoneless. They also didn't bat an eye st sending me a new one.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
Using SetCPU as axis01 suggested, or Captivate KeepAlive (available on the market) are both software workarounds. However, the only real 'fix' is to exchange your phone for one without the problem.
Since there doesn't seem to be a proper way to determine this ahead of time (many have reported multiple exchanges before ending up with a phone free of this issue), it's up to you to determine the tradeoff between the battery drain from software workarounds and the effort/chances of exchanging for a problem-free Captivate.

I had similar experiences. I've exchanged my Captivate a few times for the shutdown issue and other issues, and it was easy every time. It takes about 10-15 minutes on the phone and then they ship a replacement out.
Ok, so this has happened a few times now on various ROMs
I'll put my cappy on the charger for the night turned on with my alarm set. When I wake up (somehow on time luckily lol) it's turned off... I don't get it. What gives?

By "security unlock" if u mean network unlock, once u flash back to stock it should get reset again.
I unlocked mine on stock, n then when I loaded stock back when changing roms, i found it got locked again. So shouldn't be an issue.
And well, nothing can be done abt the screen protector.
Believe, I've the 4th captivate after 3 replacements for sleep death issue.

Thanks Smith. When u get ur replacement I would recommend u wait for 3-4 days, confirm it does not have sleep death or charge death issues, and then apply screen protector.
Like the dood said - Flash back to stock.. but I would test to see if it keeps happening. If you have a Build 1008 phone - it seems to be more prevalent on that build then others.
Mine happens when the phone is fully charged especially. I would test that to see if you can get it to repeat or AT&T will just give you a replacement battery instead of a refurbed phone.
Will do, if I even get one this time around. We will see...
Thanks again!

I have a 1008 build phone and I'm hoping to exchange mine within the week. I flashed back to stock with Odin 1Click on Tuesday and I noticed it isn't entirely the same as when I bought the phone. There are some default apps missing, QuickOffice for one. Anyone have ideas?

You can download Quick Office from ATT Market. It's not needed for returning it back to AT&T. All of the base bloatware is returned to the phone after you Odin it.

Don't think too much. Format the internal SD, and revert to stock and return in. One click odin to stock gets it close to how AT&T gave u the phone. A couple optional apps missing shouldn't matter.

Great, thanks. That is all I needed to hear. Hopefully returning it today. Then as long as I can use the three-button mode to get into download and recovery, I think I'm going to try flashing my first ROM bundle.
So I exchanged my phone tonight. They gave me a 1007 build, however my IMEI ends in 0652. The guy at AT&T told me that Samsung had replaced the bad component causing the shutdown problem and was re-issuing old phones. They apparently don't change the IMEI. I'll see what happens. If it starts shutting down again, I'm back in the store for a new one.

I have a phone that is in the range of phones effected by the standby of death thing and i didn't want to return it but it started affecting my phone, or at least i think it is. I almost always have a custom rom on it so could that be it. And also if i need to return my phone what should i do, should i just return it to jh7 and then call them to make a return or what? My IMEI ends in 3918.

First of all, never expose ur IMEI like this.
Try changing the kernel/ROM and see if it still is exhibiting the same behavior.

Honestly, I'm switching over to a more stable ROM to avoid it, and then once the refurb Atrix/Infuse/Inspires come out, I'll ring warranty and pick one up.
what defines standby of death? 10% hr?

So your saying that i can keep my phone and since it has that standby of death thing i can return it and get a atrix/infuse when they come out instead? If so that is awesome, because i got my captivate right before they announced them and i was really angry. But how would i go about doing that once they came out? And about the imei thing, sorry i forgot.

standby death means - phone turning itself off when in standby mode, irrespective of battery level.
mine used to turn off whenever it wanted be it the battery was in 90s, or in 80s, or anything for that matter. Never could I predict when I would find it turned off.

Yes, they can exchange your phone, I had a nokia mural replaced so many times I called the presidents office of AT&T, long story short I got a captivate for $99 dollars from that and a 3 month extension to my contract.
You can in special circumstances get a new phone, but unless you have it replaced 3+ times there not going to do much...

What did you say? Just went to your local AT&T store?
I too got one with no questions asked. I was actually wanting a new phone, which I got the next day on a return trip.
When I went into the warranty repair center I explained that my battery had been holding a charge all day and in most circumstances I'd have ~70% by the time I got home from work. Then over the past few days it was at 20% by the time I got home and would die within the hour if I didn't plug it in. I had some other problems with the phone too, but their solution to my problem was to send me a new battery.
I am going to ATT to get one soon
Do this:
Walk into an ATT repair/warranty center. Tell them that if you leave your phone on the charger over night, the device shuts down after fully charging, and you borrowed a third party battery and the behavior didn't persist.
New battery, boom.

Interesting, I have always wanted to try replacing my phone's battery to deduce whether my ROM or battery is causing poor battery life. By the way, I don't think I have ever seen an ATT repair/warranty center. Does anyone know if there is any in Chicagoland area?
Thanks!
I had one of the early Captivates that would randomly turn off. I tried several avenues to get it replaced, because it was way past the normal warranty limits. Several months later, I was surfing around and found an ATT service memo that addressed the issue. I called ATT and mentioned that document, and low and behold they sent me a new phone. The moral of the story is that you just never know. Service and support is like fishing.... just keep throwing different things in the water until someone bites.
i got my new battery through the mail today because there are no centers near my area either. worked like a charm. gonna love having two batteries. thanks for the heads up guys

I always call Warranty Exchange and they take care of anything I need. Although I do have to humor them with some basic t/s steps (all of which I've already tried ...and then some).
Boston repair center is in waltham they were very cooperative and gave me a refurb which fixed random shutdown gps problems. I wished I'd ask for a new battery.

I've had a strange bug since I got the phone that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen (don't think it is hardware).
I can reproduce it every morning after I wake up. Conditions are as follows:
Phone is on the clock daydream while charging. I use Sleep As Android as my alarm. Every morning when my alarm is going off and I reach for my phone half of the screen is not working and or black.
I just had a recurrence of this in the xda app after I lost wifi connection and was exciting a thread (pressing the back button) during the handoff to LTE. Easy fix is to just hit the power button to turn the screen off then turn it back on. Works right away.
Anyone seen or read about anything similar?
Thanks!
I made a post earlier about screen touch issues and this is one of mine as well. I can't reproduce it like you can but the right half of the screen just drops off to touch.
Have you seen the half (or third) of the screen go completely black? Seriously Wtf. I've only had it happen probably 4 times.... Comes back on immediately and worms as expected if I press the power button twice.

Picked it up from tmobile on Wed morning.
Also, those issues seem different from what I read.. Screen is *completely* black and they get stuck. Mine works fine 100% except when I wake up with the prior conditions (over night, phone is on clock daydream, dimmed and I am woke up with Sleep As Android alarm). It has only happened once in any other circumstance. Also, my phone updated to LRX21O upon first boot.
At this point I can't tell if it is software or hardware... Not sure how tmobile handles this as I bought directly from them (no insurance as of yet) or if I go straight to Motorola?
I just wish I could conclusively rule out a hardware issue.
I'm having a similar issue. It seems to definitely be intermittent though. Also, I've only experienced it when my phone is in landscape mode. It goes back to normal when I flip it to portrait mode.
Did you ever find anything else out about the issue OP?

Nothing other than what is in here. Still happens to me, though much less frequently. Hoping the 5.1 update rumored for Feb solves some of the quirks.
I honestly think this is a hardware issue of some sort. I had my original Nexus 6 for weeks and throughout heavy usage, I never had any issues. The first day I received a replacement device from Google, half of my screen would freeze/go black when in landscape watching videos, playing games, and sometimes even browsing the web. This was with 100% stock ROM and kernel without root (which rules out that being an issue). I tried reflashing the stock image and the issue still persists.
I contacted the GPS customer service last night and ordered another replacement device. This is issue is certainly specific to this phone, my first device was used heavily and this never happened even once.
I am convinced it is hardware as well.
I am experiencing the same issue with my phone and opened a ticket with Google yesterday and I want mine replaced. It's not just the Nexus 6 that's suffering from this as some Droid Turbo users are experiencing it as well.

Same thing here. Tmobile 64 GB nexus 6. Bought mine from T Mobile, but they don't have a replacement to send me, so I contacted Motorola, and they sent me a new one that arrives tomorrow. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this one.

Look on the positive side of things, 50% less battery drain due to screen usage...
I still think this is, in my case, specifically software. Other people have reported different issues that are most likely hardware, don't think mine is. Also it has only happened two or three times in the past month, seems to with screen on and rotation occurring at the same time, though I can't confirm or repro reliably.
Well, just had my replacement processed over the phone. Only potential issue is that they said it may be a refurbished device. Anyone know how/if there is a way to tell??
I am not sure if this is somehow related-but my first Nexus 6 I got from t-mobile was working fine and on the second day of owning it the touch screen stopped working! I mean it won't register any touch whatsoever! The phone was just charging and I just used it like 30min ago....tried rebooting, resetting-nothing helped-went to a t-mobile store and replaced with a new one. The second one works...for now. The strange part is that they were no issues-it worked flawlessly and all of a sudden just stopped responding to touch.
I have never experienced issues like this with any smartphone in my life-I have owned android smartphones ever since the G1 was released...

T mobile didn't have any available devices to send me, so I contacted Moto. Moto sent me a brand new phone.Build date is December 16th. So far no problems, but I just got it today. I'll report back if anything goes wrong.

Can you post a picture of where? I don't see any dates listed on the box.
On the bottom right just before SeQ#
But a better way to check is to boot into the bootloader/fastboot hit valume down until you see barcode then push power.
For me the date it shows is 1 day before the date on the box. The box says 2014-11-16 bootloader says 2014-11-15.
