Every time I try to do the rom upgrade for my PDA2K the device does a soft reset (when it's reset it then reconnects to activsync, and the green logo reappears) and after a while the ROM upgrade software tells me there is an Error 101 Connection Error. It's driving me nuts, I've tried all sorts of variants, soft reset first, hard reset first, USB port, USB2 port, Activesync 3.7.1, activesync 3.8, Windows XP, Windows 98. I don't understand why there is a connection error, because I can connect to activesync correctly, it even reconnects after the ROM upgrade causes it to do a soft reset. Please help! I've even tried following directions to copy the temporary files and running those directly but the result is the same.
Bizarre
Try connecting your device then stopping activesync (task manager, then stop "WCESCOMM.exe" in XP), then run the upgrade.
Regards,
Dom
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the process kept reappearing during the attempted upgrade and I still got the Error 101 message.
When activesync starts, let it complete the sync and then go ahead and run the upgrade. I experienced this last weekend
victor
I've tried it dozens of times. I've let it sync on many occasions, and I've also tried it on many occasions with it connected as guest.
I tried iMate online support for the third occasion regarding this matter, and as before once I tell them what the problem is they then don't respond (they also never respond to my emails either).
I have actually considered hiring a laptop for 24 hours, just in case it's my Mac that is causing the problem (but I'm using Microsoft Virtual PC running Microsoft Windows XP to upgrade the ROM on a phone running Microsoft Pocket PC, so I really don't see why it shouldn't work. Normal sync, and installing software via Activesync work fine. I'm on the brink of selling the device because it's just caused me too much grief. The trouble is, it's put me off ever buying another Pocket PC, and I cannot find a suitable alternative. Every device I read about has some reason why it wouldn't be suitable.
At last I've had the opportunity to do the ROM upgrade on a 'real' PC running Windows XP.
It behaved in EXACTLY the same way as running Virtual PC on my Mac (even down the the odd delay before Activesync recognises that the phone is connected - I had assumed that this was because of the inefficiency of running an emulator!).
Error 101 connection error every time. Firewall switched off. Tried with and without hard reset.
I wonder if there could be a hardware fault with my phone? The pins on the phones connector all look fine.
Now I am really stuck, I seem to have completely run out of options (and I don't want to send the device of the the middle east either!).
One last idea. Is there anything more than a hard reset? I've just removed the battery. If the unit is completely deprived of power will this take it back to factory settings any more than a hard reset?
NOPE!
Hard Reset is the best you can get bar removing the insides of the phone and swapping it with someone else's!!!
Dom
if you do remove the battery you need to put the lock switch back into the postion as if it the battery was in. This seems to make the phone think that the battery is dead and then drain the internal backup one.
I've been using my AT&T Tilt for nearly a month without any problems, but yesterday for reasons I cannot determine, my phone suddenly stopped being recognized by any version of Windows XP or Windows Vista. I tired Windows XP SP2 in a virtual machine on my Mac, I tried it on my wife's Windows Vista machine, and I tried it on my children's Windows Vista machine and I received the same error each and every time.
No matter what machine I plugged it into, I would immediately get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error and neither ActiveSync on Windows XP nor WMDC on Windows Vista would initiate a sync.
I've hard reset my phone multiple times, I've uninstalled and reinstalled both ActiveSync and WMDC, I've even flashed to a different OS on my phone (using my MicroSD card) and nothing has worked.
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the USB connection on the phone may have failed. I've been contemplating sending it back to AT&T since I had a malfunctioning pixel in the middle of the screen, but with the recent problems I'm starting to lean more towards returning it and less towards living with the pixel issue.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the USB problem?
Just a quick update, when I arrived at work today, I attempted to sync with my work computer (Windows Vista Business) and I had no trouble at all. I'm going to take home the cable that I have here (which came with the BlackBerry I use for work) and see if that makes any difference with my home computers.
wow
I can confirm this as well. I have the Tilt and I used a blackberry cable from my job and it synced up flawlessly. before i was getting that usb not recognized as well.
I'm having the exact same problem now.. it worked fine for 4 months and now.. it just says usb not recognized. Please post the results if your blackberry cable. thanks
I just tried a brand new usb cable and it still didn't work for me
I have the same problem but i've got a solution for this and it's very simple.
For someother reason ActiveSync will boot on the background of your device even when you close it, it will boot up within 10 min or less.
This is the thing you need to do:
Before you plugin your usb cable to sync......
Run taskmanager and close activesync. When you are sure that this application is not running then plugin your USB cable.
It worked for me!

I had this exact same problem happen to me at the end of November - I was using WMDC 6.1 for months then all of a sudden I could not connect (same error message you described). I went back and looked through the MS Windows updates and identified a NVIDEA driver update had caused my problem. Used system restore to roll it back and then everything worked fine.

ya..i bought my girlfriend the HTC Touchdual and has the same problem as well. She can't seem to sync with her Win XP and is only her 2nd time trying to sync and it failed already. In between, I don't think there was any internet connection to update anything.
Please help!
(Sorry to borrow this thread to solve the same problem but on another device btw, I own a Kaiser myself but currently didn't face any problem yet..touch wood!!)
Dwimmerlaik, did you have any luck fixing the problem?
Solved my USB Connection issue in Vista
After trying everything I could find on the net to solve my inability for Vista to stay connected with my HTC Kaiser (ATT TILT), I found the problem exists with the MicroSD card. No matter what, Vista would connect then disconnect my phone after a few seconds. After weeks of searching I finally just decided to take out my 2Gb MicroSD card.....and now Vista maintain connections and I am finally able to sync via WMDC.
Spread the Word!!!! Take out the MicroSD.

too bad I'm not using Vista..
Anyone else have this problem and solved it?
-Try to use the USBs at the back of your PC(not on the front of the case).
-Try to buy another cable(That SHOULD BE an USB2.0 HighSpeed certified shielded cable. That costs something about $6 ).

Didn't work for me either
I've tried doing that multiple times..
Go to phone, menu, options, time zones tab, uncheck the Auto change time zone & clock.
This is a known bug in the firmware that causes A/S to automatically start & then sometimes it tries to start a second sessions of A/S when you plug in to your PC. Give it a try, have you ever noticed that A/S is running in task manager even though you're not connected or just reset? Just one thought.

I've been putting up with this since I got my Diamond, but now enough is enough
Has anyone experience Activesync disconnecting there device after a random period of time?
The device connecs and syncs - no problems - but after what might be 5mins, or 35mins (randomly does this...), it just disconnects!!
Appears to have nothing to do with charging (could be only partially charged or fully) or actual syncing process. Not a real issue as it still syncs initially and even when disconnects it still charges up from the USB but...this appears to be a flaw with the s/w of diamond or WM6.1 (to me...)
If this is an issue perhaps someone from HTC might read this and note same!
Happens to me too. Not all the time, not often... exactly random, as you said. Quite annoying
I'm sure there can't be just two of us! This happens to me for nearly every connection, the difference is sometimes its in 5min, sometimes 5hrs
BTW, this happens with both my work and home PC......
Surely there are others with this issue???
now i cannot even connect but when i can never it will never doconect except when you turn the screen off
Hi,
I have the same disconnect problem, varies every time.
Looks like I'm not alone... Every 5 mins I need to turn off and on my screen t to reconnect, no matter at home or at office.... you guys are right... ANNOYING
Not sure if this might work but in Device manager > USB Hub properties > untick Allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

I haven't got any problem with Active Sync, both with Exchange server and with the desktop Outlook. Are you syncing with XP or Vista? I found Vista is rock solid when it comes to ActiveSync using their Mobile Device Center.

sounds like the device is turning off (not just the screen off)...this will of course disconnect ASync
OK, USB power off is not the issue here as with power manegement off it still disconnects.....
....anyone familiar with asynckiller? Built into SwiftB ROMs and is always running...what does this optimise? Could it be the culprit
Asynckiller the culprit...testing now...
could be getting closer now....I reckon its this Asynckiller built into the ROM
see here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386948
Have shut it down with task manager and see if the sync holds....stay tuned
hey guys i've had the same problem too. the answer to your question is simple: if the screen turns off, the device goes to sleep, the activesync connection is terminated. simple as that. in most cases however, my diamond never goes to sleep mode when in activesync... so if yours does, that's a newer problem
Hi,
I have the same problem with activesync by usb. This is very annoying especially if you have to transfer large files, like maps with TomTom-Home.
It is not the standby-mode which causes the problem. Even without going into standby the connection get loss.
My solution for the problem is to use bluetooth for active sync. I never get disconnected even I stay connected for hours!
I assume it must have to do something with the usb-controller. When I connect my device as mass-storage with my linux computer and transfer much/large files, I can see a lag in transfer after some time. The transfer stops for some seconds and then it goes on again.
Maybe this is the reason why activesync lose the connection
Have ruled out asynckiller....this is not the issue. Brief correspondance with SwiftB and he thinks this issue has been around as long as WM6.1 as been i.e. MS Activsync issue (another one!!) oh so frustrating
I was having this same issue when using a generic cradle I sent off for to sit my HTC Touch Diamond in. I've gone back to the cable that comes in the box with it and suddenly no more disconnections! Are you all using cradles too?
Yep. Have the same problem. Using Vista and 6.1. It wasn't a problem with XP and WM 5, but has appeared with 6.1.
I don't think it is Vista, as it also happens on another machine with XP and 6.1. Also not to do with the power saving, screen sleep or 'phone sleep. I disabled these in turn and the 'phone still disconnects (it does seem to be the 'phone, not the PC - both Vista and XP work fine with two other WM5 devices, although Microsoft is as confusing as ever by saying that AS is no longer required with Vista, whilst selling WM that always requires AS, thus ensuring that AS on the 'phone has to sync with Mobile Connection Centre).
It has got better and worse during the 8 weeks I've had the 'phone - not clear whether this is ROM or application related, as I'm changing so many things at once. Clean ROM install seems to help, but then the problem reappears when all apps are back on the 'phone. Maybe it's not getting a necessary data connection signal from the PC? I'm running it from a Dell M1330 USB2 port.
Hi
My beloved HTC HD7 on O2 (Unlocked now) advises me that their is an update.
I imagine this is the pre-update to the No-Do update
However everytime i try to install i get to stage 6 and then the error 801812C is reported.
I have searched this and found the same answer in every article regarding-
"During Step 6 (Rebooting your phone), your Windows OS detects your phone as a new device and starts searching for driver updates online. This can be seen when you click on the little indicator with a spinning green circle in the bottom-right corner of your desktop called the notification area (you might need to click on Show Hidden Icons if it's hidden)."
"You have to *immediately* click on "Skip Obtaining Device Software Online" or Zune will time-out and show error 801812C1"
However i see no option come up on XP to allow me to stop such device updates. And i definatly have no hidden icons!
Someone please help with a better solution...
Jayne (Yes i am a girl so be nice, so sartactic answers please, I am Tech savvy but this one eludes me)
From what you post, it sounds as if maybe you have to right-click the notification icon in the system tray for that option.
From what i understand from the OP's first post, she doesn't have the icon so can't right-click it.
I know it's not really a solution, but have you tried updating on a Windows 7 machine? I've always thought that windows 7 is more compatible with WP7. I know this isn't excplicitly mentioned anywhere, but why else would the Dev Tools only be available in Win7? strange....
Windows 7
Many thanks
Yes indeed no notification is showing and I have set the taskbar not to hide inactive icons so nothing can be lurking!
I will see if i can find someone with Windows 7 as i'm a XP user through and through lol
Many thanks for the ideas so far but if anyone has another brain wave please contribute, I don't want to miss out on the proper upgrade when it arrives..this week fingers crossed eh!
same error here
Hi Jayneh,
I too have an HD7 on o2 (Sim unlocked, but stock otherwise).
I am also an XP sp3 user, and I'm getting the same error as you, 801812c1.
The update fails at step six. The phone will reboot and then show a picture on the screen suggesting I connect my phone to the pc, despite the fact it is connected already. I've tried three times with no joy so far.
I've done some searching and as you say, the current theory is that after rebooting the phone, the pc doesn't recognise it as WP7, but Wm, and proceeds to hunt for the right drivers. This will of course fail, and the update times out.
Several users on different model of phone have reported the error and Microsoft are advising you hold off updating until the issue is investigated.
A number of users are saying they are using Windows 7, so it can't be an Xp specific problem.
Several fixes have been reported by some users which include unplugging and re connecting the phone quickly, or stopping the pc hunting for non existing drivers by clicking the update icon in the notification area. This does not seem to work for everyone.
I have tried unplugging which didn't work for me. I looked for the update icon but can't see one, but in anycase, my machine runs incredibly slowly during the whole process so doing anything at all is frustrating.
One thing I haven't seen anyone reporting is whether they use the same machine to sync a WM6.1/6.5 device or not. I do, but I'm just grasping at straws here.
I'm also slightly worried as I only have a little over 10GB left on the laptop.
Here's hoping NoDo isn't a NoGo for us.
Garrickus
Many thanks Garrickus, as long as i'm not alone with this and it is being looked at, hopefully if all else fails the fab developers on here will soon have us an update rom we can port straight to our HD7's. Fingers crossed and hope the sucking up to the developers speeds this along
One solution to the 801812C1 error code
jayneh & Garrickus,
Do you have windows automatic updates turned off?
I had automatic updates turned off (XP Home 2002) and I had the same problem when I first tried updating.
After reading something elsewhere, I turned automatic updates back on and tried updating again 24 hours later. It worked, with the update running smoothly through all 9 steps without a hitch.
I don't know if you have to wait after turning automatic updates on, I just thought it would be prudent.
I'm also using an HTC HD7 on the o2 network. I hope this information helps you like it helped me.
Ian.
Automatic updates
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your feedback regarding automatic updates.
Unfortunately, I have automatic updates turned on, and PC and Zune are fully up to date, so that's not an option for me.
Interestingly, Zune had a minor update after a couple of failed phone updates and now when the little bubble pops up it describes my device as 'Zune' not 'Windows Mobile', but still getting same error code and updates fails exactly the same.
I see their is no specific response to this error code from Microsoft as yet
Are you still experiencing problems Jayneh ?
Garrickus.
Update
I was still having problems and my PC was/is up to date and automatic updates is on.
I say was because i now have the NoDo update having followed the brilliant update method by Petbede for updating without a gold card.
It went smoothly and here i am with a speedy phone and cut and paste. My god bejewelled loads so much quicker
frustration
Im using Vista, have the same problem as Garrickus. HD7 on Vodafone network. After reboot the device pops up as Zune device and computer tries to look for Zune drivers, after some time it gives up. I have tried all ways of updating drivers, nothin works.
Hi everyone,
I experienced that problem today downgrading my HD7 with Zune installed on XP SP3, three times it didn't work...then i closed all running app like firefox & other utilities...and the downgrade process worked at least...
My advice : just be patient!
Update WP7 driver on PC before running the WP7 upgrade
The error '801812C1' appears when the phone is wrongly identified as a 'Zune' device (MS MP3 reader !) after the phone restarts at step 6 of the WP7 March 2011 upgrade.
In order to set the correct WP7 device on the PC:
1. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button)
2. Restart the phone and press & hold the camera button
3. A black screen appears on the phone showing a device connected to a PC
4. Connect the phone to PC on USB port
5. Open Device Manager on PC and check the entry for Portable Device: 'Schubert' (= HD7) or other name (depends on your phone).
6. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button) and restart it.
7. Connect the phone to PC and run the WP7 upgrade from Zune.
The error '801812C' no longer occurs at step 6.

My pc says unknown device when i plug my phone in. The only way it may work is to connect my phone when is discharged, then my pc will recognize it. I want it to work everytime ... I use Windows Phone 7.8 DeepShining .
So, there is any way to make it work like a normal phone? :-s
Oh, another problem is when i try logging in with Zune, it says something about Region. I've set it like the same on my phone, but still doesn't work.
Sorry for bad english...
Problem with detection
Hi, i have the same problem, did you solve it?
thanks
Poor you, sorry...
But your problem is a PID 0000 VID 0000
That's a burned/erased device rom (the communication card rom), your only choice is to replace it, it cost around $25-$35.
Good luck
Similar problem
I also have connection issues on XP. With Zune the phone is fully visible but the bootloader doesn't switches to USB when connected. With Active Sync it does but the phone doesn't actually connect, AS doesn't detect it, the icon stays gray and the search in the settings fails. When i try to run a ROMUpdateUtility i get Error 264 Connection.
I didn't dared running Zune and AS at the same time. Can i do something else?
