Since the Nexus S's GPS doesn't seem to bloody work and a fix isn't even on the horizon I was thinking maybe I could use an external GPS and hook it up via Bluetooth. There's a couple of success reports for Android phones in general but I don't know which devices, if any, will actually work with a (stock) Nexus S.
Are there any special protocols / features that need to be supported and what do I need on the phone side?
Do you have any specific recommendations?
Judging by the local pricewatch site (http://geizhals.at/) the market is dominated by Garmin and Navilock here.
1+ check some amazon reviews out it should work with anyone that has tried it will an android phone. If not CM7 will most likely have the protocal to support it
What are you talking about? My GPS gets and holds a lock within seconds. Try flashing a different rom, mine took over a minute to lock before I flashed OpenSoju.

It's nice that the built-in GPS works on your phone, but it doesn't on mine and I'm on the second unit already. Please do stay on topic.
You would rather continue using a defective phone than listen to people tell you that a non-working GPS is not normal behavior?

Do you really think exchanging it a second time would help any? (Not a rhetorical question, btw.)
Have a look at the many many threads around here by people who have problems with the Nexus S's GPS. Or at the mile-long thread over at Google Help. Or at reviews over at Amazon. Everywhere it's the same picture: A lot of people have problems, a lot don't.
If it were easy to fix it would have been fixed by now, so either it's a hardware issue that only affects some batches (in which case exchanging the phone won't help) or a complex bug that depends on outside factors, e. g. carrier used (same result). I could of course get another phone entirely, but which? The SGS1? For the GPS?
FYI im on my 3rd phone for other reasons and GPS was fine on all 3 devices
you might be getting threw a bad batch like you said ..IDK

Hm, not very encouraging, but thanks anyway.
I'm still open to suggestions for an external GPS, though.
Yes I do think exchanging it again would help. You are paying $2,000+ over the course of two years for this phone. Settling for one with capabilities less than advertised seems unreal to me. If I bought a car after the salesman told me it had A/C and it turns out it didn't have any A/C, I would return it in a heartbeat.

Ouch! I realize you're just quoting a round figure but I just did the math and I'm not even paying $500 (assuming US) over two years.

Wow, I didn't notice where you were from. $21 a month! You are a lucky guy. The US lags behind in broadband and cell service I suppose..
My GPS never worked too. I downloaded Gps test (by chartcross limited) on the market and after running both this app and google navigation simultaneously my gps worked. Initially it took 5 min to lock in a signal and now i get a signal instantly. Maybe give this a try.

Ok, I got number three and lo and behold it is a little better. Not great, but usable at least.
I'd still be interested in BT GPS that work well with the Nexus S.
I'm also not too happy with embedded GPS receiver.
So I just bought a Holux M-1000C, cheap and much more sensitive.
As additional plus you should get:
- logging during trips
- (to be confirmed) lower battery drain
- it can be adjusted to read up to 10 positions per second

It depends on your problem. If you show them the phone won't lock and GPS doesn't work, then they have too.
If your GPS is not as accurate, they may not. I am not sure what the tolerance is for that.
I spent two hours proving that same case to them and I can speak in very technical terms with them. They just kept saying I need to use ATT navigator or my gps won't work. I told them they were a bunch of useless jack asses if they think anyone will buy that garbage. Long story short, they refused, I now run Axura where the gps works wonderfully and I could not be happier. Once my contract is up I am switching carriers.

It doesnt even lock on. I might have to go try that. And yeah i've thought about switching carriers bit being in the military only ATT works everywhere in the world.

Tell them that the gps doesnt work, it wont lock and also that your phone shuts down randomly and that it is a known issue to samsung and att. also tell them your battery sucks ass. The more things u tell them that they cant prove it in the store they will replace it on the spot. I told the att dude about 10 things about the phone the dude didnt even say anything went in the back and brought me a brand new looking cappy.
Very well thank you all for the info.

x2. I walked into the repair center today and as soon as I said "I've got three things wrong with my phone" the guy was already working on the paperwork for my replacement. I was in and out in 10 minutes. The tech didn't even check anything to see if I was telling the truth, but then again I have a feeling I'm not the only person who has been to that store with a malfunctioning Cappy.
If anyone care: my first phone had the crazy self-pressing home button for a while (I learned to live with it as it wasn't so bad with certain roms) but then I started getting random shutdowns earlier this month and this weekend the GPS was just plain fubar (kept reporting me as being in Orlando instead of San Diego). Here's hoping #2 works out and I don't end up going through multiple warranty replacements just to find one that works reliably.
Also if u get a replacement check with shippmemt it is. If i rmr correctly the newer ones are 1008 that work better, you can check this under the battery. This was mentioned in one of the rom threads in the op but i cant rmr with one if i find it ill post it here

I am going to Barnes & Noble today to get the Nook Color. I want to buy it so I can root it and use it as a tablet/ereader. Are the newest version of the NC's rootable or do I need to buy an older version off eBay or something. Thanks in advance!
No, you're fine. The current firmware, 1.01, is rootable. It'll probably come with 1.0 anyway.
If you want a great value on a quality android tablet, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

If you can live without GPS, cameras, 3G, etc., I see no reason to pay over twice as much for a Galaxy Tab. Mine has everything I would have wanted from a Galaxy Tab-- and this is without a custom ROM.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. Wireless Tether app (version pre-12 I think I'm using) works great.
While there's no GPS for navigation, it gets other location services from the network, so Google Maps and whatnot get my location to within 100 yards or so.
I’m using my DroidX to tether.
I don’t need camera and crap on the tablet.
I have NFS Shift running on mine flawlessly along with just about all the apps I’ve installed.
I think the new thread should be “what does not work”. Everything I’m using sems to work.

You may want to buy somewhere that has a better return policy, but thats really up to you.
When I was at B&N today just to look, two people walked in within 5 minutes with defective units...One had no WIFI, the other had screen issues.
They sent the guy with no Wifi home, telling him he must have typed in his password wrong...They would not exchange for him.. They never even looked at it.
They sent the lady home because she did not have her charger.
I JUST bought mine at Best Buy...First one had a dead dark pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, also had some dust and the flicker everyone mentions..
I exchanged it, however they really gave it the 3rd degree and looked like they did not want to exchange it..They pulled all the packaging apart, turned it on, went through all the menues, etc....
Second one is in good shape, but does have a stuck pixel that only is seen on a full black screen..I can live with that I guess.
Examine yours closely, because I have a feeling there is quality issues.
I would assume they are getting a large amount of returns now and are probably going through them thoroughly..
Alright thanks, I might consider buying from Best Buy then instead.
Just got mine Christmas Eve. I had looked long and hard at a Galaxy Tab. But at the price, I just couldn't pass up the Nook. With rooting, it is everything that I wanted in a pad. As mentioned before, coupled with my rooted HD2, it is an awesome duo.
And as a stand-alone, the Nook does everything I could want. It came with 1.0, but updating was simple. Auto-nootering was just as simple. AWESOMENESS!
Another possibility for the return scrutiny is that that B&N/Best Buy are now well aware of what many are doing with these, and are happy to sell more units--as long as it isn't causing them to lose money.
. . . And one way they could lose money is if people screw things up rooting and want a replacement or refund. Dead pixels have nothing to do with rooting, but the retail world could easily over-generalize as "don't take NookColor returns lightly."

99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.

After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

From day one I had dropped calls, sometimes as many as five in the same 10 minute call ! Considering that my previous phone never dropped calls at my location, I was immediately suspicious. Did the required checks with TMO regarding towers and reception. They sent a replacement phone. Dropped calls were actually worse on the replacement phone. TMO declined any further action, suggesting I should call LG. LG stated categorically that they had no reports of any problems like what I was having.
So I have been forced to return the phone for full credit, reversing the required two year contract and I am back on my trusty Vibrant.

I live just outside Dallas, I get good coverage, a little shoddy at times inside buildings, but never any real problems. Especially as I get closer in to the populated areas where towers seem to be more frequent/powerful.
There are many things about this phone I am not thrilled with (battery life!) but reception and call reliability is not one of them. It is far better than my previous phone on TMO and better than my work phone (Incredible 2) on Verizon.
Omg. Why with these pointless threads. I'm no developer or such. But my god.....
Its an android phone that has a lot of techno and great performance. Of course it will not be great on battery . a lot of ppl buying this phone seem to think its the ultimate phone .. Either deal with it or buy a Nokia 3310.....
And the screen scratching and breaking its not indestructable ... It'll protect to an extent .
As for the op blaming his phone out of the bucket load sold.I've not heard of 1 instance (I work in a phone shop ) ... I've had mine since day 1 along with a work colleague.
We both have no yellow tint issue.
No random cracks (that just happen) .
No speaker or mic issue.
I rooted mine straight out the box and running faux kernel and aokp ROM . battery I have just seen my best yet at 2 days and 14 hours.....
Use on WiFi all the time. Moderate net browsing. Ebay.mail. few hundred texts. 25 mins of calls.....
I can't understand why ppl post bad things that effects all new phones, but yet there's threads and threads of this and that. .... Its a phone ...
Op I know you proberly mean well but its just constant now . I use to come on here a lot to see how development and cool new things and new info are in progress. All I see now is
Threads about
This issue .that issue. Oh my screen randomly broke.battery's terrible. Screen is not gorilla glass as it has a scratch.
Any way all the best what ever phone you decide next .

I call bull. T-Mobile sent a replacement nexus 4???? I know they are supposed to start selling them soon. But this would mean you already bought one from T-Mobile. Or you convinced then to give you a replacement just cause?

It definitely can! I did research on Google for each and every one of these that I wasn't sure about?. I recommend anyone do the same if they are not comfortable and remember one man's trash is another man's treasure, you have to know what it is otherwise you may get rid of a feature you really want that someone else could care less about.
If you go to the running apps in the application manager you can also turn off some services but I'm not sure how to get some of those back because they don't show up and the "turned off" list.
These aren't actually getting deleted its the same as freezing them if you were rooted and using rom tool manager or titanium.
Your phone acts and responds exactly the same as if they were deleted but they are still there and dormant.
Many of them like "ant" can be downloaded directly from the Play Store.

Some variants do s be sure to check your radio freq. All you have to do is plug in headphones and they work as your antenna. Then you launch the app. It was probably easy for samsung to just toss that on all phones and let the carriers sort it out later.
That's common practice, why if your on a budget it's best to buy the low of a high end company rather than high end if a low end company!
Often parts /software are the same with less features "disabled or not connected" . It's cheaper and higher profit with easier tech support to have less platforms that are truly different.

That's rubbish!
Ant is a wireless communication standard based on the Bluetooth radio hardware. You can connect with several heart-rate-measurement devices used by runners and things like that.

It's amazing the level of "Bloatware" you guys get on American carriers! Wow! Up in Canada it's not nearly as bad and has been getting leaner and leaner over past couple of years.
Heck, a couple carriers up here got practically nothing on it but I think it was a time thing and not getting the firmware n source code in time to customize before launch but nonetheless hasn't been *too* bad here on most phones and carriers for a while..
And more importantly we have practically been providing "unlocked bootloader" phones for ever.. That's a BIG plus as the likes of AT&T and Verizon are locking everything down.
