So what's good here? - Motorola Droid Bionic

The droid bionic a device that I pass my gaze over since I still had a ongoing contract with my incredible until earlier today. I received the email from motorola letting me know I just won a free bionic. (yay)
So whats the hype? What should I expect? How do I make the best of it?
Thanks!

Root....install kejars deodexed debloated rom. And the bionic bootstrap of course runs smooth and fast as heck

ICS Booted on the Droid 3 -- New Poll

As some of you who follow me on Twitter (@Hashcode0f) may already know, I booted up ICS today on the Droid 3.
Almost nothing works (including touch sensor for the screen), but it's progress on that front.
The question remains.. where should I spend my time?
And you the community get to make that choice.
New Poll at Rootz

My god you are amazing!
Hey hash did you get my PM? I can't post in the deveopment forum
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
I don't know how good ICS is.. and also depends on how long it would take to get a functional build (everyday use). If it takes 3+ months I say finish CM7 first
I'd still like to see the LED used only for notifications. The sound, camera and 3g errors are no biggie but they're nagging imperfections in an otherwise killer ROM.
What sort of advances does ICS offer over the current Android?

I say work on CM7 Hash, if Googlerola gets us an unlocked bootloader by 2012, ICS will be way easier to work on
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)

That's what I'm saying. Liberty rom and ADW launcher got me with no issues look or performance wise. Unless ICS has bigger changes than the obvious theme and performance changes. Ain't no point to me in worrying about.

I would much rather you rebuild safestrap to make 2nd system on SD Card.

If it were up to Motorola only, they would probably unlock the bootloader, but Verizon has the final say.
I would love to see ICS for the Droid 3, I imagine we will see a Motorola issued update sometime next year, it would be nice if they didn't use Motoblur with ICS but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I would love to have unmolested ICS on my phone. I don't like much of Blur.
Hashcode you are our Droid3-God Thanks!
I love the task-app of Blur and that everything is black on white.
thank y for your hard working !
I know chevycam and i'm sure other developers are waiting for a working CM version to use as a base for their own roms. Plus getting the drivers and other assorted bugs worked out now on 7 should help when CM9 comes out later.

GB is a year old, we need to move on. I've had GB since the first Droid OG port.
Stay on the cutting edge, Hashcode! Thanks for your work!

CM7 for sure. It will make CM9 easy. Then, we can also have MIUI and other AOSP based ROMs. It might not even be possible to get ICS working completely without a new kernel. But it is definitely possible to finish CM7. It's a waste of time to work on ICS now.
Not necessarily GoogleAndroid. Remember that he would have to make everything work since the code base for ICS is a huge change from the code base for GB. I would think that would be the case unless the CM team takes care of that.

What do you think odds are that you will have ics up on the droid 3 before motorola releases it for the bionic(would be jokes but I bet odds are super good)? Would the bionic ics source speed up your port to droid 3 or make it more stable? I guess I could think of a list of questions as a noob but honestly, the main would be which makes most sense to you? That's the box I would check in the poll.

.901 fixed the bionic!

Im so glad I updated my phone to this version! 5.5.893 did not fix anything and I was so disappointed .... but .901 makes my bionic a bad ass phone... 3 days running with zero data lost. Battery life is a lot better too. If u are in the same situation I was don't think about it and update your phone to this version.

You shouldn't have a problem updating if you flash 901 and leave it stock. They pushed it ota to som bionics, so they should support it for future ota updates. Even if they don't support it for some reason, you can use P3droid's one click to revert back and take the update.

Liberty Themes

Why is it so hard to find themes for the liberty rom? I keep finding broken links.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
because Eclipse is where it's at
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
where as liberty is an excelent rom, it is out of date. eclipse is the most current rom.
Eclipse runs slower for me and doesn't pick up 4g (I live at the border of a 4g area, get 4g with liberty, get 3g with eclipse.
I dont really see liberty as being outdated but more of a completed rom that doesn't need to be worked on. I really don't see too much more they can do to it until Motorola releases ICS. performance and battery life have been great (battery was better before they got the 4g to my house but that's to be expected)

Eclipse runs better for me. Liberty was my favorite rom on the Droid X so that's what I thought I'd stick with. I started running it as soon as I got my bionic and it was an improvement over stock and I thought that with a few more releases that it would be a beast but support was dropped and it was still lacking performance. Then I tried Eclipse and I was pleasantly surprised, it runs as good as I expected Liberty to run.
But even if liberty is outdated, its a bad sign for our community that we can't find themes for it. I'm still able find themes for the Droid Eris that I used 2 years ago but can't find a theme for a newer phone.

you can find themes for your phone, just not the rom you want. the system version has nothing to do with your data connection, thats what the radio is for. there will be so performance differance between users, but for the most part people should get similar results.
http://gunnermike53.com/Bionic/Liberty/
thats the links to my 2 liberty bionic themes. some of the apps will be out dated, but the systemui and frameworks will be the same.
if you are satisfied with liberty then by all means stick with it, i am in no way minimizing team liberty's skills. they just havent done any work on the bionic since they all got thier new toy.

I talked to kejar and he told me that liberty was intended to be something other developers could build off of. I'm not sure.what else they could do to it because the performance I get is outstanding. Unfortunately we don't have too many rom development enthusiasts on the bionic to play with it.
I also don't believe it to be a radio issue because I get 4g on liberty and only 3g with eclipse with the same radio. If I was having problems with 4g on liberty, I would agree. But the radio works just fine with one rom and doesn't on the other. I'm on liberty gold I believe it is, the last version they released.

yes it was built for others to work with. again, that change when the new builds came out.
it doesnt matter what you believe about the data issue. the fact is that the radio is what controls your data connection. if you want to go on beliveing something that isnt true, well, thats up to you. ive told you what the facts are, its up to you what you do with it.
If it is the radio, why does it only impact the one rom but not the other? It seems that if the problem was the radio, I would have issues with both roms.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
And I know that the radio controls the data, but that still does not explain why I don't have the same data issues on both roms. The radio hasn't changed on my phone. Only thing different is the rom. If radio isn't giving me problems with one rom, why is it giving me problems with another. That's why I don't believe the issue is with the radio itself. It could have something to do with how the rom reads the radio.

im not going to continue to argue with you. the fact is your wrong. you can argue that all you want. the most likely thing is that you did something wrong and thats why you had problems. either way i dont care. run what ever rom you want. but you have your answer as to the lack of themes for liberty.
I'm not trying to argue. I'm just curious why its an issue with one rom and not another. Apparently there isn't anyone who can give me an explanation of why? Just saying its a radio issue doesn't really explain why it works fine on the other rom.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
But thanks for explaining why there aren't more themes for liberty.

[Q] Will we ever see Miui on the Bionic?

Is this even a possibility? Is there any interest in this? What needs to happen to get a functional daily driver Miui rom on the Bionic?
Does someone just need to port it, or is there some kind of issue because of the encrypted bootloader that makes it an impossibility?
My Google searches do not turn up many answers. How can we make this happen. I love miui, mainly the theme changing aspects.
I believe it is the same thing as cm7/9 we are waiting not sure on his name to fix the 3g 4g stuff and the til I believe its called its not going to be too difficult as far as development are concerned not that miui is going open source so 4g will soon be possible so i think it is just a aosp based issue that needs to be resolved anyone correct me if I am off my rocker
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Yea you are probably right. They need to get the 4g data issue fixed on aosp first. I think the Bionic has some great potential for development, hopefully the devs figure it out soon.

Yes I see something now. Here is the link I found http://forums.miui.us/showthread.php?5433-Motorola-Droid-Bionic-ROM-REQUEST!
Yes, it looks 4g in CM for Bionic needs to be established first. Time for me to look into more developer friendly phones I guess, lol.
I give it 3 months and the development will skyrocket especially since muiu is now open source with source code available
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I think development will become more active once Motorola releases ICS for the bionic. I think some developers are waiting until it's released to see what they have to work with. Right now its just a waiting game.

I don't reckon most Droid 3 owners give a **** about ICS on their phones, nor do they have any clue what it even is. That is a shame though, because for Android enthusiasts like us, it is a big deal, especially when we are running ICS on it already and it makes MotoBlur look like the old LG Env interface.
Most people don't root, and Verizon isn't going to promote an OS version over a new handset. I love my D3, but it's utter nonsense that it won't get official ICS just months after Google called the version the great unifier that can and will run on every phone.

I'm still running the alpha 6 and all seriousness if it weren't for a few things I would swear it was better than alpha. If motorola only knew what a pure ics experience was like on their hardware they could easily bury samsung and the crap nexus they released.

I compared the hardware specs between XT860 and Galaxy Nexus and the only differences I really saw was that we only have 512mb ram. Same GPU almost the same CPU, I think moto is buying time so Goog can save them

Moto still has not confirmed that the D3 is not getting ICS. As the DX and D2 both received GB well after they were no longer being sold, I think it's a good possibility that it will. We'll see, though.

I doubt that we will ever see bootloaders unlocked on our current phones. I suspect that it could not be done without sending the phones back to Motorola and having them replace the "one time" programmable firmware. Why else would having a Dev Razr be useless for unlocking other Razrs. I think the only way we would ever be able to put anything we wanted on these phones would be if Moto released their encrypted key so that the phone would accept it. FAT chance of that happening, but I bet that hasn't crossed anyone's mind at Moto. Maybe we could suggest that to them.

OK, can someone answer a possibly dumb question for me? I've spent the last year happily rooting my original Droid and running custom roms - finally settling on Cyanogen Mod. Now, I'm no expert but I've found it pretty easy to do by just following the instructions that are available many places online. I now have my Droid 3 and so far am just running it stock - waiting for CM9 to get to a release version.
So, from the discussion I'm assuming that rooting the Device and loading Cyanogen is somehow something less than "unlocking the boot loader". But if it is, does that matter? Whatever that actually means it doesn't seem to be preventing anyone from running custom ROM's - or am I missing something?

But I used to run custom kernels on my Droid 1 too. I was running CM7.1 with a Chevy#1 (think that's what it was) kernel which was what let me use Set CPU to overclock. Is that not loading a "custom kernel"? Or was the boot loader unlocked on my Droid 2?
I'm not criticizing or saying anyone else is wrong - I'm just trying to understand what the differences are between what I have been doing and having a true "unlocked boot loader". What are the things that would allow me to do that can't be done now?
droid 1 is the only true unlocked bootloader moto phone with the exception of the atrix, which was accomplished with many many hours of work.
