Can you get it into download mode without it turning off? (Hold volume down + home button + power) Or recovery? (Hold volume up + home button + power?) Is it rooted with clockwork mode?

Maybe its a boot loop. Switch off your phone and check if download and recovery mode is available(see next paragraph).
If so follow the steps mentioned.
First of all download xxjw4 firmware for galaxy gt-I9000 from
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150483619/708026d/I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip.html
1) Put your phone into Recovery mode (Vol up + Home + Power button) and perform a Wipe data/Factory reset, then a Wipe cache. When done pull the battery out for around ten seconds then re-insert.
(If recovery isn't working ignore this step)
2) Put the phone into Download mode (Vol down + Home + Power button)
3) Unzip the JW4 firmware folder you've downloaded to your Desktop.
4) Launch Odin and click on the button that says PDA and navigate to the PDA file you've just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
5) Connect your phone to your PC via USB. Odin will say Added and a box will turn yellow to indicate it has recognised your phone.
6) Click the start button in Odin and sit back and wait for Odin to flash your phone. When it's finished it will take a few minutes longer for the phone to reboot than is usual so please don't panic. The phone will reboot.
7) When the phone has rebooted, remove the USB cable and you now have the latest 2.3.6. It might be a good idea to repeat step 1 to make sure nothing of the old firmware is left behind.
And that's it, seven steps to 2.3.6 JW4 Value Pack and TouchWiz 4.
In case you want more info about flashing go to this site

Enjoy
idon't have a recovery the phone isn't root and but i can get to the download mod !
still i tried what you said with the odin and it doesnt work
the phone wasn't root before and had a stock from the operator
If its a boot loop try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984140
If not download the files from sammobile (2.3.6 xxjw4) put the .tar file in the PDA and 512 pit file in the pit section make sure the repartition is ticked then if it still in a boot loop search for the cfs root and flash that then get the file off the thread I gave you then flash that to the phone as instructed on the thread then your phone should work edit* you need to put your phone into download mode before plugging in and flashing

Did you try that method? And when did it start turning off, did you try mpding it or did it just start doing it? Does it he a knock when it turns off or is it at the same place everytime? If it stays turned on in download mode its probably software related also make sure the drivers are installed using kies

Does Odin recognize your phone (com12 or something like that in yellow)
If not then try different USB port or also different cable and computer.
According to my experience if you are able to go to download mode then there is always a way to fix the problem
So this morning I was using my phone as normal when it froze. Then I rebooted and it just stays bootlooping. I'm using a recent nightly of CM9 and I can't enter recovery mode to reflash the phone. How do I install CM9 using Odin? Is there any other software for that? I can enter download mode just fine.

Hey,
So, I'll try make this easy and simple, hahaha.
1.) Download Odin and any stock 2.3.6 rom from sammobile.com. Unzip the file, you should get a single .tar file. Also download a file called dbsdata.rfs.tar
2.) Turn the phone off and put the phone into download mode using the three button combo- Vol. Down, Home and Power.
3.) Connect the phone using USB. Odin should recognise your device- it should say in one of the little boxes up top "COM:ID" with a yellow box.
4.) Select the PDA option. Navigate to where the first .tar file is, the one you downloaded from sammobile.com. Select it. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE AFTER. Once you've got that, select Start.
5.) Now you'll end up in a bootloop. Don't panic here- its because of how the data in 4.x and 2.3.6 are set up. This is where dbsdata.rfs.tar comes in. Pull the battery and reinsert it. Go back into download mode.
6.) Again under the PDA option, select dbsdata.rfs.tar. Let it flash in.
Done! You should boot back up properly into GB 2.3.6
Hope I helped

hi this is solution
1.search google with "i9001 official firmware" on your pc and download the zip(200-255mb) and extract with any known directory
2.download odin open, download ariesve.ops(u will get it by search on google
3.(connect phone in downloadmode )on odin inthe ops menu select the ariesve.ops file. on the left of odin select one package
4.at the bottom you will see select package click and select ur firmware which extracted in step1
5.now click on start
(!!!dont select the firmware on pda it will brick your phone!!!)
To enter download mode switch off the phone volume down+home+power button
looking at adding 4.2.1 to this phone i9000 has stock 2.3.3
what would be best way to jump to jellybean
any help would be nice thank you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570488
get that and flash it with odin. ( the file inside the zip, not the zip itself )
download the zip file from the attachment, extract it, and flash the tar from it with odin.
at that point you're on 2.3.6, rooted, and have cwm, then you just need to pick the rom you want, download it and the correct gapps for it, and flash those with cwm, rom first, then gapps.
odin how to :
install usb drivers ( google for them, search in mods/themes/apps for them, or install kies and then uninstall it without removing the drivers it installs. )
download odin.
launch odin
select file to flash.
reboot phone to download mode ( turn phone off, hold volume down, home, and power keys simultaneously until hone reboots to download mode. big yellow triangley thing on screen when in download mode. )
connect phone via usb.
check small rectangle below first square box in odin is yellow.
if it is, click start.
phone will reboot once done.
both files you'd be flashing here with odin should be selected by clicking on PDA, not any of the other options. rom first, then the file from the attachment.
how to use cwm.
turn phone off.
boot into recovery ( same as download mode, but volume up instead of volume down. )
use volume buttons to navigate up and down, home to select.
prior to flashing rom, do factory reset, wipe data, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
flash rom first, then the relevant gapps.
reboot.
set up phone.
thanks on the right track now
