This is how we crack Moto's bootloader - Motorola Droid 3

http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/19/2...re-cluster-amazon-schrodinger-cancer-research

Actually, it's looking more like we'll just use kexec to bypass the bootloader and run unsigned kernel/code since it's up on the razr... did you put in your cause to see if you win the 8 hours? Lol

I really should, lol. The post was mostly meant as a joke. It's insane that other than kexec, our only possibility of being able to tweak our phones like we should be able to is to pay thousands of dollars per hour to use a supercomputer to crack the encryption. What a joke.

Thousands? They said 30,000 for 8 hours on that cluster I thought and even then I doubt we'd be more than 1/2 way there. I imagine we would need to flash a new/cracked BL to our devices etc which would take a bit of coding etc after cracking the encryption. Indeed a potentially expensive and long process if this were the route.

I WORK. for the money
Sorry your phone will be of no use all they did is flash your ROM with the Factory Stock. Or they may have even replaced your entire motherboard if your sister ran over it.
Yeah, thats sounds about right for a mobo replacement and htc does not flash the phone at service, the firmware is already flashed to the motherboard, or so I read.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? Are 15 year old kids suddenly not allowed to have a good phone? Who cares how he paid for it?
That said - thanks OP for thinking of the community, but I don't think there is anything anyone can do to extract that.
Not gonna lie.. you kinda got my hopes up.. my nexus has been freezing up on me a little often now.. and i was going to send it in for warranty but I read ur warranty is voided if u unlock the boot loader so now im stuck..

He sent it in rooted and they sorted it though. Ive heard quite a few stories now though of rooted phones with blatantly not software/rooted related problems and HTC being the honourable Taiwanese they are happily repairing the phone anyway [tbh it probably costs more of them to flag the phone, invoice for return carriage, store separately etc etc than just effing fixing the thing.]

I think Android at a young age can only benefit the future!
I mean, especially being within this XDA rooted community, a kid can learn.
besides that,
I'm also pretty sure this stupid boot loader nonsense will someday solve itself, thanks for the honest effort in trying to help out the community.

I put a whole year's worth of money into mine.
I'm only 14.
I've dealt with HTC customer service a few times, and it's 100% true they don't care if the phone bootloader is unlocked or not. If you do an exchange they specifically told me that all they do is check the phone for physical and water damage and that's it. They honored my warranty, at least
Seriously guys chill. I'm 15 and I have a Nexus, a Droid (thanks to Google's device seeding), and an ADP1. The Nexus & ADP1 I bought with my own money I had saved up from mowing yards. What does it matter how old the owner is?
Im only 14 and i bought my nexus when i was 13. i worked my butt of to get this phone. just because your young does not mean you cant buy an expensive phone. I mowed lawns, you went to your everyday work. why does it matter how old you are, or how you got the money to buy it?

I'm also 14 and own a Nexus One. It's ignorant to say "your ____ years old you don't deserve this phone". Not everybody was gifted the phone.
Damn when I was 14 I don't think I would have had the will power to save $600, would have kept spending it halfway through lol. Props to all you young guns!
I cant even remember when my kids were 14 years old let alone when I was. Seems like forever ago. Still, I like to see kids earn their toys, makes em respect the investment. Good work young fellars.

+1. I like to see kids work and save to get something they really don't need, but want. It's okay, as long as they don't use them some way that's going to get them into trouble.
But still, I am curious - who gets to pay for those data plans? Buying the phone is only the beginning of the expense.

What do you think about the VeriChip?

I think it is one of the stupid things ever made.
I'm not a F#[email protected]$ GPS or someone that you can just take my information even though Google already does with my Android, whooops.... lol
It's not only about GPS. Imagine paying with the palm of your hand, no need to take the passport to the airport (which is one less thing to worry about when flying overseas), and other benefits. Sure they can track your location, but they can already do that with your phone. Also VeriChip's technology is old. It was approved by the FDA in 2004. That's 8 years ago.

Edit: I googled it. But i don't think it'll happen. Doesn't even look like the media has picked it up, and it's like 8 years old now. Fox News hasn't even reported on it, and i think they would jump on it like wolves if it was serious (or even a lie).

Genome Sequencing

When my mom asked my kid brother what he wanted for his birthday he asked to have his DNA or genome sequenced to find out his genotype. (Or something like that, I'm still learning about all this.) She asked me to pick out a computer for him haha. But I've been doing some research and I think it's a really good idea! They can tell you what health issues you are predisposition to, and give your doctor information about your genetic structure that would help him better prescribe medicine. Also they tell you your genetic ancestry, genetic relatives, and even what percent Neanderthal you are. haha
23andme will do it for $300. I heard about them through Wired, and their website looks good.
Has anyone ever done this or know someone who has? What company did you use?
On the other hand if you think it's a bad idea for some reason, tell me why. So far I don't see any reason why not to do this. Frankly I am dumbfounded that health insurance companies do not require it.
Seems like a worthwhile idea. I didn't know it was as inexpensive as $300 already, I figured it was still like a couple hundred thousand or more. If I had the disposable income, I'd probably go for it.

I know right. And the way I understand it they continue to check different new diseases against your genotype and update your predispositions on your profile, for the initial $300. They add new genetic relatives on your family tree too.
It's just such a new thing I don't know what I might should be concerned about, or who has good track records. I was hoping someone had already had it done and could share their experience.

Right. But what I'm most concerned about is will the rogue DNA recognize me as its genetic match and obey my commands. I don't want Dr Frankenstein to build a monster out of me if I can't control myself, ya know? The cloning feature was only a bit extra, but I don't want a genetic friend. I want to be able to sleep in and force my genetic equivalent go to work and clean the house, and the ESP control feature is a little out of my price range.
There are downsides. How differently would you lived your life if you knew there was an increased likelihood of dying early from some terrible disease. I think in most cases I would want to know, but not everyone would want to.
The biggest problem is going to be when insurance companies start to require this testing as a way to get coverage. Then those people with "bad genetics" will be forced to pay higher premiums.

Haven't done it. But at $300 its getting a lot closer to what I'd be willing to pay and im sure eventually it will be cheap enough for insurance companies to cover it since it would let them know about possible medical expenses down the road.

[Q] Rooting my device

Is it necessary to go through all of the pain of unlocking the bootloader of my device to root it? Or is there some easier way that allows me to bypass this, as it all seems kind of unnecessary to me?

As far as I know, it's not necessary to unlock the bootloader to root your phone, in fact, I rooted my AHD BEFORE I unlocked the bootloader. As for the ways, you can use MythTools, just search them on the forum.
See above.....though you're lucky because it's much easier to root these days. Anyone remember when we were doing Samba mounts with Linux for root?
Your phone has to be rooted to unlock the bootloader, and I'd advise you to unlock your bootloader now. It's easy and it can save your ass if anything goes wrong with the phone.
There's no reason not to unlock the bootloader unless you can't because it's a work phone or warranty reasons or whatever.
Warranty issues aside, almost every part for this phone can be found for real cheap and the hardest repair is a cracked digitizer or lcd screen, both of which can be done by anyone for $20 in parts and 30 minutes of time. Only thing you might not easily find is a motherboard, but a broke screen used Atrix HD can be found on ebay for cheap and the board swapped from it.

I hear ya. I went "wtf, samba? At least I already run Linux, but this will suck for the average dude.”
I almost managed to get root using a modified samba method and my Defy. Probably could have if I looked into it farther, but rooting became so easy so fast I said f it....the bootloader was unlocked a month after I purchased the Atrix HD.

I picked it up about 1 year ago for 99 cents. Gonna have it for a year longer until the AT&T contract is up. Maybe longer than that if I don't see any phone that's really worth buying.
/I'd really like it if they took the Atrix HD, made the screen a bit bigger, and gave it the X's cpu and whatnot.
//There really aren't that many large screen phones with the durable feel that my Motorola phones have.

I'm usually able to get a full days worth of crap in with the current KK roms, less if I'm on the internet a lot, but for just music, maps, and phone calls, I can get up to 2 days on a single charge with the EB20. But yeah, I agree...the EB40 should be the regular battery and there shouldn't even be a Maxx version...
Crap battery is the trade off for thinner phones that act as a fashion statement....I don't think any of us are that vain and would prefer a long lasting brick over a short lasting cd case. Blame Apple and hipsters.

Same here, except the shipping part . That sucks. I picked the Atrix HD for function over fashion....could have got a GS3 at the time, but I don't want a plastic Samsung. Hell, I've only had one friend that's actually liked their Samsung phone and that's a buddy with a Note 3 (and he'd like it if it felt more durable as well as not liking the OS tweaks...his previous phone was a RAZR HD Maxx and he liked that OS)

Question Quick advice needed

Hey! I was wondering if I should unlock my bootloader and maybe try flashing roms kernels and basically playing with my phone, because I saw some people complaining that this might affect the warranty. However, I am in Canada, where the phone is not officially sold, so should I just unlock it anyways because getting warranty coverage would already be close to impossible?
Or do you think I could get warranty coverage/service if the phone bricks itself?
I am interested in trying LineageOS but I am scared that if my phone bricks itself it will make it even harder to get it repaired.
Thanks!
If it's fulfilling its mission and you like it... leave it be.
Little to gain, everything to to lose.

Yeah I think I'll end up unlocking it, as I don't think I would have warranty coverage anyway and I like the idea of a de-googled phone...
Try turning disabling Google play Services for starters...
Personally I'm not going to ri$k bricking my devices. Or incur the massive investment of time it takes to completely rebuild a functional ecosystem for a new OS. Especially when its fulfilling its mission... that is its purpose for me.
Meh, limited distribution means limited support.
I'm in Canada too. I unlocked and flashed Lineage.. so far so good.

I got it second hand, but original owner said it was from there also. Battery for me is slightly better than stock. I always had lousy battery on stock since the beginning, not sure why.
