External Storage Device Compatibility Review - Nexus 7 Accessories

After reading some experiences on my other thread about how some USB devices work perfectly, and some only allow you to see and copy your material I am starting this thread so that people that need to buy external storage but are afraid it may not work.
So some people that already have the Nexus7 have been able to have Full USB support. Some have not been so lucky.
Here is how to have full usb support:
Step 1) Root your Nexus
Step 2) Download and set up the app Stickmount
Step 3) buy a usb drive and a USB-OTG cable (plenty of threads on where to buy
Step 4) Post your results in this thread using the forum below.
Nexus7 16GB or 8GB
USB device: (Manufacturer, model, size, etc. Whether it is USBdrive, Harddrive, or sdcard)
USB-OTG cord: (Brand, purchased from, relevant thread)
Could you see the files in the Nexus7 native file explorer?: Yes or No
Could you see them with any other explorer? Yes or no
If yes which one: (App name)
Do the files open normally from the explorer? (Can you click on a song and have it open automatically in your default music player? How about pics? Movies? apks?): Yes or no
If no: What happened? Was there an error? Did you find a workaround?
This should help us buy the right brands so we don't waste our money.
NOTE TO THE MODS:
This is not a thread requesting deals, or a thread discussing how to host USB
This thread is just for the effectiveness of each device.
This thread should ONLY have posts with the above format and replies that are designed to help fix any problems with that device.
If you want to discuss anything about the Nexus7's ability to host, or about it's host development, etc please post in this general thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736825
Please only post in this thread if you have a review of your experiences, or if you have a method to fix someone's problematic experiences (though that could be handled through PM and then the OP of that review could update their post.
Let's keep this as a neat organized reference. If you want to thank anyone in this thread, just hit the thanks button, no need to post.

Refer to step 1 in the OP

Now there needs to be a case made that allows for the USB drive to be tucked away so we don't need to worry about it.

This is true, but this is not the thread to discuss that, as stated in the IO, please keep all posts related to the review of USB-OTG setups.

Do we need to use a specific kernel? Also under file manager, what label is it under? I cant seem to find anything

Just tested my setup with a WD passport and it doesn't look like it has enough power to spin the drive up, but personally I don't really want to carry a hard drive around, uSD and flash drives are okay with me

So if someone says "yeah I got it to work" I should open up the other thread and ask that person that posted his results on this thread how he got it to work since im having trouble? OMG yeah that makes sense. why didn't i think of that. unbelievable.
Edit time: I got it working, set up is as follows:
Nexus 7 8gb
Generic USB OTG cable from ebay $2.50 (US Seller) I believe Amazon has them for cheaper
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20078495618...NX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_981wt_1037
Kingston 16gb micro Flash $10
http://www.buy.com/prod/kingston-datatraveler-micro-16gb-usb-2-0-flash-drive-blue/227277954.html
and downloaded Stickmount. Once it worked I could open the files with Astro. Made a shortcut/widget to that folder, once plugged in, just click and browse. Makes it much easier.

Only thing is that cable ships from hong Kong. Its going to take weeks to get to you. Anyone know of a retailer that sales them?

huh? What cable? I just gave you an ebay link that ships from Brooklyn, NY. I ordered it go to me in 2 days. Ebay has a bunch of US sellers selling these cables all of which ship from the US, but keep an eye on the "should reach to you by this date" thing. I noticed some said 11-20 business days while others said a couple days from the order date. Only thing that sucks is that US sellers are usually at least 2x the price of hong kongers which in this case means $3 instead of $1.50 lol

I may try this one. How can they ship a 95 cent item free from Hong Kong? I like this one because it looks real small (would just keep it attached to the flash drive).

Okay, so I had a cable from a LONG LONG time ago and I know I got it on amazon but I don't remember where. What I'm posting for is I just formatted a micro SD Card to NTFS and loaded a movie on it and it plays AMAZING from the USB. I used stickmount after root, obviously, but I'm most impressed with flash NTFS support!! Looking now for a 128 GB USB stick if anyone has one to recommend.

USB host

Even if you guys opted for the 8gb I think usb otg is native on ics and I'm pretty sure it's the same on JB. Or am I wrong ?
It is native since Honeycomb, the issue (I believe) is knowing if enough power is going to the micro usb to power a flash drive. Err...right guys?
Correct in that the power needs to be at the port to support it, but also code that enables read write and file management paths for apps and the device to see on the N7.
Seems based on the manual and the cloud intent of the device, it might not be supported by design.
What about powering sd cards via the otg, does it require 5v as well or can you get away with 3.3v?

Anandtech updates..
Anandtech's mini-review was updated regarding OTG support, though the quote is extremely vague:
"Update: I've had many emails and questions about whether USB-OTG (On The Go) is supported on the Nexus 7, and didn't touch on it when I originally hit publish becuause I wasn't entirely sure. I've now confirmed that USB-OTG is supported on the Nexus 7, and works on the current Android 4.1 non-final build that has been sampled. That's encouraging, and I'll test it myself when I get home and to my miniUSB OTG adapter."
I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer before we know the extent of OTG support - why he couldn't have said WHAT device(s) he tested is beyond me. Either way, I wouldn't hold my breath as Google has had a long standing interest in pushing us towards the cloud.
According to the guide book on Play, it supports OTG for input devices...no mention of storage. Still, it may work without mods, but even if not I'm sure it will be done relatively quickly.
The main thing is, the guide does confirm that you can use devices without power, and recommends using a powered hub for plugging in multiple devices, to "avoid draining your device's battery." So...even if you can't plug in a flash drive out of the box, this will probably be a software solution, instead of a hardware one.
Just waiting for some kind of confirmation for MHL now...
People seem to have taken the Anandtech post to heart, but the manual already lists USB input support. My guess is with the small battery, the power probably only supports 3.3V so will not be reliable for portable storage.
Not long to find out
There's thousands of nexuses floating around out there, just waiting to be tested...I really hope it does. Movies on flash drives ftw.

For starters... see this thread.
I realize that 3.3v isn't going to power an external HDD (or even an SSD, I guess), but my question is is 3.3v enough power to read from a full size SD card like this:

in a USB reader plugged into a cable consisting of a Micro USB male at one end and a Type-A female at the other end like this:
See the other linked thread if these references make no sense.
SD cards are cheap (even fast Class 10 and faster UHS-1 SD Cards). I just don't know if all of them can be read at 3.3v?
Whatever the Galaxy Nexus is at, it can run USB drives up to 32GB (highest i've tested) but it can't run any form of hard drive.

Nothing (or close to nothing) will work on 3.3V directly since USB devices expect 5V. You'd need a powered hub on the way.
See the KF OTG thread to see the challenge of making it work.
There's also the question of current available, not just voltage. SD cards are actually power hungry compared to input devices, if there's not enough current available from the port they either won't work at all or won't work properly.

yes like that. i've tested up to 32GB flash drives, as well as a usb-microsd reader up to 16GB.

OK, but see...
All SD card families initially use a 3.3-volt electrical interface. On command, SDHC and SDXC cards switch to 1.8-volt operation

Source: Wikipedia. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that a USB reader/writer doesn't require 5v, but at least the card doesn't. Many of the readers are so tiny, I can't imagine a voltage transformer circuit being in one, but if they're getting 5v and stepping it down to 3.3v or 1.8v, it could only be done with a transformer -- unless an SD card can tolerate working at 5v even though it only needs 3.3v or 1.8v. Hmmm.... The mystery deepens.

I understand your point about current, but can't find anything (yet) which specifies how many watts or amps a typical SD card reader/writer needs.
We should see an update at Anandtech this weekend and know the scoop.
If it works, I will get a 16gb and retire my View.

Update 2: I've asked for further clarification about what USB-OTG functionality is supported. Using a mouse and keyboard will be supported, and I saw Google using an ethernet to USB adapter over USB-OTG as well. Unfortunately I found out that mounting USB storage will not be supported natively. In addition MHL is not supported.

Until the USB host thing is overcome, there are some alternatives to access external storage, including:
1. Use Wifi Explorer app on the Nexus to push/pull files between it and a computer on the same Wifi environment.
2. Get a Seagate Satellite. It's a battery-powered 500gb USB 3.0 hard drive with its own on-board Linux server and Wifi hotspot. Mine lasts about 6 hours on battery with three kids using it to stream three different movies at the same time. New ones are going for about $140 on ebay now; about $160 on Amazon.

Yeah, they need to test stickmount. USBOTG doesn't natively on the galaxy nexus either, if I am remembering correctly. The app makes it simple enough.
There is already a thread discussing USB-OTG, please continue all further discussion there.

Is there any flash drive that will mount on microUSB

Since Nexus 7 will support otg, I wonder if there is any flash drive will directly mount on micro-USB port. I know Kingston have micro data traveler which is really small, but it only has regular USB and still need a adapter to connect, so if there is a flash drive with micro usb, then we can expand the memory of N7 easily without adding too much volume

the answer is right now NO . There has been no flash drive or external storage that will plug directly into the micro usb port.. I am working on making one with a flat printed circuit cable.will post a thread with pics if am able to get it working should be not much thicker then the micro sd card. IF IF IF ..

Its not exactly what you asked and is totally untested with the N7. I'v asked them to maybe test it, failing that i'll take a punt on buying one and let ya'll know how it worked out.

sure its not a true plug in micro usb drive, but ill be able to plug it in and not have it hanging on a cable

Unless the N7 is different to other android devices I've seen, the musb port doesn't provide any power, without which it can't read the external media. That's why a powered usb hub is used, in which case a micro usb drive is moot.
Ipads actually push a bit of power through their dock port which is cool, but of.course what u can do with it is limited.
It would be a cool mod to open up an android device and patch power into the musb port. Maybe i'll try next tine i have one open for some reason.

This is incorrect
I do not need a powered usb hub on either my Nexus 7 or my Galaxy Nexus. This OTG cable works fine for both devices: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
Also, you must be rooted and have stickmount: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
Power is supplied to the micro usb port since it works and also, the usb flash drive lights up
Well in this case I am extremely happy to be incorrect then.
I've got a CM9 hp touchpad and a rooted ics razr maxx that i use otg with, but they only work with powered hubs.

Works fine on rooted N7
I rooted my Google I/O devices the day after the conference. Just on a whim, I plugged in my usb micro A to usb A port and plugged in a thumb drive. While it is true that the device will not automount the storage partitions, is certainly shows up in /dev/block/sda (device) and /dev/block/sda1 (first partition). I could run the mount command, "mount -t vfat /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive" and it mounted just fine. Nothing to it really, I suppose it'd be easy to add something similar to this:
# USB storage device
dev_mount usbdisk /mnt/usbdisk auto /devices/platform/s3c_otghcd/usb
In the /etc/vold.fstab and make it automount.
That might not be the exact line but I guarantee the port supplies power and has the USB mass storage driver working just fine.

That's the closest thing I've been able to find but its still quite bulky. I would be afraid of tweaking it and breaking the drive or worse the port itself. Hopefully we will see something like this soon with a micro-b end.

It would be great to see one with a triangle shaped housing to reduce the chance of snagging it on something. I could use one for my GNex as well. It would be a perfect solution for nexus owners... or Google could just put a microSD slot on their nexus devices... until then hopefully someone will decide to cash in on (IMO) the only flaw with nexus devices.

SanDisk Class 10 MicroUSB Flash Drive 128GB OTG

Its a hit, but not a home run

Just got my nexis7. Jelly bean appears to be much faster than my other tablet running gingerbread or my smart phone. Yes, controls are different, but that was somewhat expected. Did not take long to figure it out and now it is easy.
I got the 16g model and very glad I did. The absolute biggest error ASUS made was not including a micro SD storage card. Yes, you can hook the unit to a laptop to upload/download ' but you are limited to what you have with you.

Working towards a price point goal causes these things to happen. How popular and it seems hack friendly may end up with an application or hardware hack to achieve external memory cards.
Then of course you have the whole cloud behind you. This is a point that Google is trying to push us with this device, use it for your day-to-day things and let us (google) store it all for you on our computers. I've been using cloud services for my Music and Videos for a number of months now, I would find it hard to return to just what I had on my own media after that convenience (for me, maybe not every but for me it's a boon).
Who knows, exciting times.
Putting a positive spin on it, for those using this as an EReader every gram of weight pared off makes long reading sessions better, not adding those 10-15 grams of interface will help there... ok, ok, it's a long stretch.
Purchased the 16GB version and after installing all my games (Max Payne, GTA, Nova3, etc) I still have about 8 GB left. No issues with storage here, especially since I use the cloud for all my music (Saves about 4 or so GB). Couldn't be happier with this device after owning a Transformer and GTab 2 7". Home run in my book.
I wish they sold 8gb at the store, I'd got 8gb version than 16gb version.
16 GB would be handy, but I realized I rarely use any space since everything I do is available to stream and where I don't have WiFi access either I tether to Galaxy Nexus or just use Galaxy Nexus...

Yea..I dunno. I wish they would have included an SD card slot just so I wouldn't have to read people complaining about it. If I truly need more than the fourteen or so gigs, I'll get me some Stickmount and my 32BG flash drive and go to town.

This.
While I agree that an external SD card would be useful, the lack of one is not the end of the world. 16GB should be more then enough space to hold movies/music/games for a long trip (even without Wi-Fi). Once you get to a place with Internet, you can replace your current content with more. And by using the OTG USB trick, you can still attach external sources of data. I wouldn't want to keep it plugged in for long periods of time personally, but you can delete/move/copy things back and forth to "reload" more content on your tablet.

They are already barely breaking even as it is selling a $199 quad core tablet. Adding anything more, and this price would not be possible. If there's a a better $200 tablet, please show it to me. Look at all those people that paid $200 for a Kindle, and what they got for the money.

This is what it's coming down to. I am already always connected through WiFi hotspot in my phone while I'm in transit. At home and work I have WiFi. As a result I've move to the cloud. Pandora, Sony Music Unlimited (Which is fantastic) and my ISPs movie service, Google Movies and Sony Movies filling in my video needs.
I understand that everyone is not me and some people can't turn their phones into hotspots, or don't have the data allowance, but we are moving that way.
The device can do a card I would say, the original version before Google cut it down from $250 to $199 had the card, HDMI and rear camera and more memory. Despite that cut down the circuit board in the Nexus 7 is still labelled as a ME370T, check the iFixit to see.

This part is probably the difference, right side missing. Only left ear to the middle usb, seems it would need middle usb to the right card slot so the entire strip goes over the bottom of the tablet. The frame (grey part with the stamp 120504 in this picture) looks to have space and the mounting reinforcement for a card slot on the right bottom, the extra needed wires seem to be in the ribbon, logically it would seem that function would go to the same part of the MB as the USB... maybe.
I am so glad I got the 8gb instead of the 16gb. I dont need or want the storage and with USB on the go I *would* be set either way. I much prefer the low cost. The days of hoarding data (Movies, TV Shows, Music) is a thing of the past for me. Its kind of like thumb drives, I used to always carry one with me on my key chain and I realized a year ago that this practice was already outdated thanks to dropbox.
And what a relief too, I dont have to wonder if my music folders are all named correctly or if they all have the album art. Its all taken care of by netflix, pandora, picasa and google music.
Google posted the specs of this device long before we bought it. The told us what would be included and what would be excluded. Based on this list it seemed that this was a perfect device for me. Thats why I purchased one. I am glad I did. My Ipad2 can collect dust now.
Mine has been all loaded up since Tuesday and it is actually only 5GB +/- not 8. Still a home run for me.....

After downloading most of my Zinio magazines, Kindle books, Nook books, several games and my Play store books and magazines, I still have over 11GB free. Do the Play purchases stay on your device or are they pulled from the "Cloud" when you want to access them?
Yes, a Micro-SD card slot would have been nice. Yes, 3G would have been nice also. But, unfortunately, Asus had to make a cuts as they are making this thing cheaply. It is, after all, a budget tablet and for that I think it is pretty impressive.
What's the obsession with being a data pack rat? Internal storage is meant as temporary storage to consume new media then replace with newer.I have the same amount of storage on my smartphone with a ton of dancing video recordings and have set to even use half.
As much as I would of liked a SD card, I never use the space on it. When I had my 16 ans 32gb iPhones I never filled more then 8gb, same with my skyrocket and galaxy note and a 32gb card I have inside. I think Google saved me money by not adding it since I would of bought a extra card just to do it.

[Q] Increase Internal Kindle Fire HD 7" storage?

I was taking a look at iFixIt's teardown of the Kindle Fire HD and was wondering if it was possible in any way to add additional memory to the inside of the kindle fire. It's pretty cramped space but not understanding the logistics myself I am not sure what would be necessary to do such a thing and whether it would require much space. Thought a discussion on it though might be interesting.

Great Question!
The Kindle Fire HD 7" is a sealed unit, although our team has been able to open
the Kindle Fire HD. The upgrade is difficult and has found to not be cost
effective. We are working on a USB Driver which will allow you to add external
storage through the USB Port on the Kindle. Until we (or someone else) are successful
this will have to be placed on the back burner.
Thanks for the reply. External sounds great! That's too bad there isn't an internal option. But I can imagine that could get be complicated.
I'm familiar with electronics and soldering and have modded other things in the past. Any resources you could point me to that could help me understand a little more hardware wise in this thing?

So far nothing that we are aware of, although we will be offering some hardware info
and videos within the next 6 months. There is a plastic tool that allows the frame
to be pried open, I just can not remember where we got it. This is how we opened
the Kindle Fire HD 7". Once you are inside, you can replace the internal SD Card
but it is a lot of work, just FYI.

Sounds promising. I'll investigate further. Wonder what type of sdcard. Does it need to be desoldered off? Also, what is the max size it will take? Some questions to answer before jumping into this one.
If I can answer these questions and it is feasible, I'll make a video on how to do it for others. (After I get mine working of course

That is the tool! So you have one, great. First flip over the
Kindle HD on a towel or something else to protect the LCD.
The back will be exposed, now pry the speaker grill off starting
at the Right Hand Side (carefully). The grill will pop off the Kindle.
This may expose enough to get the job done otherwise, flip the
Kindle exposing the LCD Screen. Carefully, Very carefully
pry open the Kindle (using the tool) starting on the Left Side
where there is no inputs. Slowly prying to the top, then the
Right Side, finally to the bottom. The Kindle top will begin
to lift off the frame. Once you are open, the rest will be
obvious. The motherboard was build by Texas Instruments
and is basted on the OMAP4460. You can take a peek at
the technical documentation here: http://www.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12843&contentId=53243
The core operating system is ICS 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
if you are on software version 7.2.3. Having said all this you
can install up to 32 GB guaranteed, maybe 64 GB (OMAP4460
Chipset supports 64 GB).

This is just what I want to be able to do on my Kindle Fire HD 7" so I can play videos stored on an external 64gb flash drive via an OTG cable. Will your solution require rooting the Kindle? I don't have any Android devices so this is all a bit of a mystery to me but I'm a fast learner!
I was trying to find a solution using something like "Stickmount" or "Nexus Media Importer" (or a Kindle version if available) which I understand doesn't require rooting but as I don't have any other Android devices, I can't even buy the Nexus one to try it. (I've seen the instructions on other threads here to install the Google Play app. Does the Kindle have to be rooted to use Google Play?)
Apologies for all the questions!

skindlies,
Thank you for the questions, this is how we learn so never apologize for asking questions.
Yes, most of the storage options will require Root, so follow our tutorial link below, we
will get you Root on the Kindle. The application Stickmount was designed for the Nexus
7 and 10, it does not work on the Kindle or the Nexus 4. Nexus Media Importer allows you
to import and stream music, video, photos and documents from a USB flash drive or SD
card connected to your Nexus 7 & 10, Galaxy Nexus, Xoom or other Android 3.2+
devices with USB Host support. This application will not work on the Kindle since
no one has designed a USB Host Device for the Kindle Fire HD. The potential options
in the future will be a USB Adapter or NAS Client (Network Attached Storage), no
one has designed these options as of yet. We are working on a Universal NAS
Client Software, we should have this available to the public in about 2 months.
Finally, yes, the Kindle does need to be Rooted to install Google Play. Just
follow our tutorial below. If you get stuck, we offer free unlimited support
through the XDA Threads and through email.

Actually my Kindle 8.9" has a SD Card socket and I just upgraded the SD Card to 64GB. So our
office Kindle HD 8.9" has 64GB of storage. What made it challenging was Mirroring the boot
partitions so the Kindle would boot. This is how we installed a Beta Copy of Jelly Bean, do
not get excited, it was terrible, very unstable and not reasonable for public use. We are
about 4 to 6 months away from a custom ROM.
Sorry was going by the picture he linked looked surface mount... in other news... nifty! Now all we need is some software to prep a 64 gig sd card for two os's

enricong,
Let me tell you something about Amazon: One series of 8.9" may have an SD Card slot, the next has the
SD Card soldered to the board, the next has an SD Card that is sealed with Black Epoxy with no chance to
removal. So, I can not guarantee anything. Remember Amazon built these with the thought they would
never be opened just like the Nexus 7 and 10. Just open it, what do you have to loose?

bbanghyung,
Very interesting, they have placed a shield over the chip in a effort to keep prying hands away from upgraded!
Even if there is a socket below the shield, it is not worth taking a chance with overheating the SD Card while
uncovering the SD Chip. There is enough space for a socket but it is clear, these devices are non serviceable.
The first 8.9" series has a socket, no cover. I'll bet the latest 8.9" has a cover over the socket. This explains
why Amazon replaces all the bad units when the are sent back to Amazon for repair - they were not designed
to be serviced, period.

It's very easy to sideload any 360 video or any 3d video. All you have to do is place it in the correct oculus folder on your sd card. Copy 3d videos to the 3d folder and 360 to the 360 video folder. How to copy Dream Beach 360 VR Atmosphaere to Samsung Gear VR or Android phone
Hi pwscott,
I'm Eric Fassbender the creator of Dream Beach 360. Thanks for your interest in my first 360 degree VR Relaxation Atmosphaere Dream Beach 360.
There is a little tutorial in the FAQ section of Dream Beach 360 on how to copy the video to your SD card (it's called "How to copy Dream Beach 360 VR Atmosphaere to Samsung Gear VR or Android phone"). Whether that is on your Note 4 or in a Micro SD adapter, the process is pretty much the same. Should you still have questions, feel free to post again or get in touch directly via my website Feel the Relaxation dot com.
The XDA discount code is still valid until tomorrow (9th February) - just use XDA20 to receive the 20% introductory discount.
Also, take a look at 'A Walk on the Beach' that has only just been released on my site. This new Atmosphaere gives you 15 minutes of time on the beach at half the price of the 30 minutes Dream Beach 360.
Also stay tuned on Facebook (/atmosphaeres) and Twitter (/atmosphaeres) for our upcoming IRELAND Atmosphaere which we are shooting next week!
If you still have questions please feel free to contact me directly via the contact form on our website @ Feel the Relaxation dot com.
Thanks again for the friendly comments from the helpful people here on xda. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and helps me to improve my Atmosphaeres over time.
Yours sincerely,
Eric

So thank you for this very valuable feedback, I'll include a note on the pages so people know that they need to download the videos to their computer first and then transfer them to the SD card. Again, thanks for the feedback and enjoy your time on the beach.
All the best,
Eric

Because of the popularity and great user feedback I have extended the XDA special discount for one week until Monday 16. Feb. Like before, just use XDA20 to receive a 20% discount. This discount is valid for 'Dream Beach 360', the newly released 'A Walk on the Beach' and all other products on the site.
Enjoy
Does that mean you have reset my download count so I will be able to in fact download on my PC now?

No worries Phil, we're always glad if we can help
Should we get the 4k or the regular 1080p version for our Samsung VR?
The 4k version is optimised for the Gear VR.
The problem I've had thus far with 360 videos is that they are horribly out if focus at anything more that 5 feet away. Does your work solve this? Things like the NYC flyover included with the GVR are just awful. Thanks.
