Rooted Warranty - Motorola Droid 4

Hey guys,
So the battery went bad on my D4 last week. My phone is rooted, and it will not boot past the DualCore screen. Because it won't boot, there is no way for me to unroot it. Is it safe to send in for a warranty claim since it doesn't boot, or will they try to fix it and then see if it is rooted?

They might not. I busted my usb port once... phone was still rooted and I crazy glued the port closed so the people who reciecve it wouldn't know. Give it a shot it, because if they do find out you would have to pay for another phone anyway.

Have you tried connecting to a pc using a official Motorola usb cable? Sometimes that works even if the battery won't charge or at least i think i read that somewhere.

Its not an official motorola cable, its a motorola factory cable, it bypasses battery and directly powers the device, and you can use it to charge and flash in a low battery situation.
I think you would be okay, because the first thing they usually do is flash it back to stock before checking the hardware. I sent in a phone that was safestrapped/rooted, because it died after overheating, and everything checked out okay.

Am I in trouble? :s

My phone is refusing to charge, I have no clue what got into it. I had to fiddle and press extremely tightly and I figured I'd take it to AT&T today as this happened last night.
Well I woke up this morning and it was dead, it does not want to receive any charge at all. I did back up my contacts and texts, but I don't see the folders I had Dropboxed last night.
I have a rooted and ROMed phone, will this matter to AT&T? I just need them fix the port. I want to go back to stock but it's completely dead now.
I'd suggest to just give them a call so they send you a new one. If you manage to power it on or boost it on, then do so but bringing it to AT&T could be a problem. The custom ROM itself isn't so bad but rooting voids your waranty.
If you call their technician, they'll tell you to try a couple things and if it doesn't work, they usually send you a new one as long as you are under waranty.
Two things to try:
1. Plug it in to a rear USB port on your pc.
2. Try another micro usb cable.
You probably already tried these 2 steps and if you have I apoligize for not offering much assistance.
I have yes, I have 3 different cables and it's the same. I've tried other ports, I tried the wall charger. I had some luck last night in my car as I kept it tight inside the middle console, but nothing this morning.
I guess I'll call instead then. If they send me one I can at least charge the battery and fix it, ship it back? Thank you!
EDIT: I'm SOL
The AT&T Chat support woman directed me to a specific location where they will check if it's my battery or the phone. If I could just get one charge on it I could fix it!
Why not buy a battery and charger. Or use a buds phone battery?

I'm not sure I know anyone else with a Captivate...but I'll have to look into the battery charger. Thanks for the suggestion.
This happened to me with a replacement captivate. I got it rooted and rom'd and then the port went dead. So I had to charge with my first one, and then wirelessly transfer the files to flash back. I had taken it to the warranty center, and it was running a custom stock rom, with super user and all that but they didn't notice

Fyi. If you didn't know. The batterbattery n a vibrant would work too.

Did you try and pull the battery out and re-seat it after about 10 minutes of not being in the phone?
Also if you call them you will want to make sure when you send the phone back, that you un root it. A friend just got a bill for his referbed captivate and it wasn't cheap!
I had this same thing happen to me (useing a rooted stock rom). Thankfully I had a second battery to use for a while. After a while I decided to try the dead battery, it took a few hours for the battery symbol to show and another 16 hours to get to a full charge. Try that... it might just be that the battery is just so dead it takes a while. Also if that is the case make sure get rid of the batterystats.bin file and you should be good to go. Worse comes to worse if you go to the at&t mobile device center just have them give you a new battery and it should be fine... good luck
Let me know how it goes

You either need another battery, an external battery charger, or a factory cable. Maybe you have a friend with a Bionic who can either lend you their battery for a while or can charge yours. Otherwise, you probably have to buy something. A new battery at the nearest Verizon store would probably be the quickest solution, but getting something online would be the most cost effective.
Thanks
I do have a factory cable what good does that do me ? And i have no friends with bionics
A factory cable isn't the one that came with your phone, it's a cable like they use at the factory to fix and program phones. Basically it has one of the power wires in the USB spliced to a wire that goes to a normally unused pin in the usb connector which allows charging while the phone cannot start.

Oh...
Oh i see well ok then guess i am screwed
There are tutorials online about how to make a factory cable from a standard one, but they can be risky.

Battery discharging while plugged in

I'm having the mentioned problem since yesterday..the phone is plugged in to the stock wall charger and during usage, battery is dropping. I noticed that if I bend the microusb connector up a bit, it stops charging..
Any ideas on what's wrong? I'm using a stock XXLSC deodexed rom which I got from the N7000 General forum, no apps installed except Facebook, Skype and xda app.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Edit edit: actually, it drains both on max and min brightness. Tried different chargers
When it's connected to wall charger, does it say charging or not? Clean the usb port a little bit and try again. If not that, also try an alternative battery
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I blowed out any possible dust in it now, it seems to be charging normally now..my main concern is that slight moving of the cable up and down causes it to loose contact, as if the pins on the motherboard are broken insidethe phone, or similar.

Still the same thing..says it's charging, charging animation is there but percentage drops. Also, no way of getting a different battery.

recently updated kernel? Had on some kernels.
Your charging cable is it original? Is it damaged? You can always check if usb port charges it better to eliminate charger itself. Note usb charges slower.

your usb cable is damaged.I had the same problem about a month back. the stock usb charger gets damaged easily
please try a different cable and report back
Tried a completely different Samsung charger, different cable on it, same thing happens.
I did no recent updates or anything.

Check your warrantee, if your running 100% stock. If its your usb charging module you might need it replaced.
I replaced mine with parts from parts4repair.com, cause I messed to much eith phone to claim warrantee. Lots of how tos on youtube. You dont need to remove motherboard for replacing it. If you think its broken, I can give more advice, at own risk ofcourse.

Yeah, by now I'm quite sure that the usb port is broken or damaged, or similar. After playing around with it for a while, I found out it does charge in certain positions, so I guess something broke off or is loosing contact.
It is under warranty, but I bought the phone under contract, and the phone carrier I got it from is notorious for holding onto the phone FOREVER during "repairs". Friend had to wait 45 days to get his back. So I'm just thinking about giving it to the local repair shop, those guys do a good job.
So far I tried different cables, and a different charger, did not try switching batteries since I can't get a hold of one anytime soon.
doing it yourself has a risk, and if those are good, fair in price, and have the right parts, then why not lol.
Be sure to check speaker, reception and wifi after, those are basically things that can go wrong with replacing this unit
btw, to excersize warrantee you can go to a authorized samsung dealer/service centre. Your not obligated to go throught your provider for warrantee. Its Samsung warrantee your calling upon, not your providers in this case I think.
I got my phone to a repair shop and they managed to fix up my phone, it charges normally now and the problem was in the connector, it got broken somehow.
Right now I'm getting extremely annoyed with constant network signal drops which happen on random..no idea why that is happening.

Hmmmm great for getting it fixed. Not sure if there is an antenna connector on the usb module which might not have been fixed properly. If this is happening since the repair, need to check again.

Unable to charge

I'm trying to help a friend who has a moto x. Her phone just isn't charging at all. I connect it to a computer and the pc sees a device connected, but cant figure out what it is. I've tried connecting it to a wall charger, and while the phone can see the charger in the boot choice mode, its just not taking a charge. Any ideas? I've told her to take it back to where she got it, but is this a common problem?

That's what I'm hoping. Don't want to have her stuck with a lemon or having to deal with Moto's customer service. I've heard nothing but horror stories. So I'm hoping the store she got it from doesn't give her any trouble replacing it. She didn't care about customization and just got the stock white one the stores get for quick sales.

Well it does have a 2 year warranty
How long has she had it?
Which cable are you using to charge it? I've cruised a few forums and found a lot of people said that it wouldn't charge unless they used the original charging cable. I don't know why that is, but in my experience I've had the same thing happen with only one other cable and the phone refused to charge. Brought it home and used the original charger and boom! Booted up right away.

HTC One almost caught fire

Ok so im using the latest Viper rom Viper 6.1.0
Plugged my charger in sunday night, and the Usb connection started to smoke all in about 10 seconds of being plugged in.
Now my problem is, my phone still works, and charges if its turned off, but not when its on. I cant connect the phone to the computer via usb as its not reconignse the phone.
I want to send it off for repair, but know my warranty is void, as im running custom rom. I cant drag my photos and other info music etc off the phone, as I cant connect to the computer.
I was wondering about bricking my phone, so that the repairs cant turn it on, but I cant get anything on the phone because of the computer connection problem.
Anyone suggest anything I could try
Thanks Steve

Im debating what to do know. As the phone appears to be charging and connecting to the computer using a different lead. So I wonder if it was the lead damaged that's causing a problem. Although it was the end of the charger more than the phone that got hot.
Think I may have to run with it a day or so, see if things carry on working.
Thanks for the help.

You had better luck than me. I had something similar and it completely cooked the port. I couldn't charge it at all or connect to pc. So warranty was denied due to all the mods and I have to pay

Normally yes. But this time I used my wife's HTC One M8 charger. It has a slightly higher output. So I am wondering if this was the problem. Think ive been lucky, the phone seems to be working fine now.
God knows what would of happened if I had plugged it in, and left it.
