With the new release of G2 I am sure there are many of n1 users looking to upgrade. Who is in? I don't need a hardware keyboard. I like the slim n1. Prob wait for the real nexus two. I wonder what is the full spec on the new G2? Whatcha think?
Edit: 800mhz say what? You guys sure u want to upgrade.

I am not going to leave for the g2 untill january, or at least until the gingerbread phones start rolling out, but if there isn't anything spectacular...which there most likely will be...I will be trading the nexus for the g2
800 MHz? No thanks.
Not Me...what would I do with a slide out keyboard
The only thing I'd really like is HSPA+, though my city probably won't get it for a few months. Other than that, I don't see anything overwhelming with the G2. Don't need a hardware keyboard now that I'm used to virtual keyboard and Swype... The Adreno 205 GPU is also something else I'd like. I think I'll just wait until early next year to see what other HSPA+ phones come out.

It's an underclocked proc from what I hear. Clock speed isn't everything. It's more about how efficient the proc is in one clock cycle. From the sound of things (aka rumors so far), It's going to have some pretty damn sweet features. It's the successor to the first Android device! It can't fail
I'm not necessarily LEAVING the Nexus, but I'm seriously debating picking one of these bad boys up

How does that GPU compare to the one in Galaxy S?
Nice looking phone, but no. I will need something soon to replace this collectors item though.
As much as i would love to have a g2 to continue the legacy I think I will stick with the sexy nexy

Adreno 205
Now everyone knows that HTC G2 (also known as HTC Vision, HTC Vanguard, HTC G1 Blaze and HTC Desire Z) will feature Snapdragon MSM7230 chipset which uses Adreno 205.
Adreno 205 features:
Hardware-accelerated SVG and Adobe Flash®
Significant improvements in shader performance over Adreno 200 GPU
Streaming textures that can combine video, camera, SVG and other image surfaces with 3D graphics
Based on the early benchmark results, Adreno 205 is expected to be about four times faster than Adreno 200. Samsung's Hummingbird with PowerVR SGX540 is expected to beat Adreno 205 by a small margin, however. Still, given that nothing touches the performance of SGX540 today (that's right, iPhone 4 is not even close!), this is quite an improvement. Also, this thread proves that
Interesting to note that Adreno has hardware-accelerated support for Adobe Flash. Are we going to see much smoother movies in action on this platform?
Will Snapdragon QSD8x60 and QSD8672 use this GPU as well? Perhaps at a higher clock speed? These are dual-core chipsets running at 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz respectively. Rumored phones such as HTC Glacier (also known as HTC Emerald) and HTC Scorpion are expected to use these chipsets. If we are lucky, we may get to see some of these phones during 2010.
Blueman's List of phones that will get him to leave his current Nexus One:
Another Nexus One
Emerald
Nexus 2
</end of list>
At 1GHz or higher I would have bought one on release day. Now I plan on waiting for some reviews and opinions after it has been out for a month or two. I really would like a hardware keyboard but the absence of | and \ diminishes its usefulness for me.
The other mitigating factor is the rumored dual core Glacier on the horizon. I am interested in seeing how that one shapes up.
I'm buying the phone release date hopefully. It's only clocked at 800ghz so I'm guessing it'll get overclocked. I'm still keeping my Nexus though just as a collectors item, as a backup and for gingerbread. I'll never sell it. One reason I wanna switch is because the 3g problem on my nexus seems to be getting worse over time. The main reason I want it is the keyboard mainly for gaming and because it's vanilla android. If there is a nexus 2 I will buy it also and when the myTouch HD does come out or project emerald I'll just get my friend to get one and report it stolen and I'll do the same with mine and then switch the extra with him. I'm hoping its available for preorder but does anybody know if you preorder a phone does it charge you right when you preorder it or on your next bill?
Hell i am leaving my n1 for this mang! Well not leaving but getting.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/02/samsung-galaxy-tab-preview/
Why the hell would I? Its ridiculous to jump from N1 until a dual core android phone with a front facing camera and an 8MP rear camera that is a "Google" phone running stock android. In other words hell no!
Are you serious. No Thanks. If I only had a G1 with TMO, the obvious upgrade would be G2. But Nexus One to G2 = Downgrade. It's an ok phone though.
A) Just to play devil's advocate, people are saying that the 800 MHz MSM7x30 Scorpion chip actually runs FASTER than a 1 GHz Snapdragon. Read the comments here:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/confirmed-t-mobile-g2-will-have-android-2-2-flash-and-800mhz-c/
B) It'd be tempting but nah, not for me. I'll wait for the next resolution bump (past 800 x 480). Preferably higher than the retina display

The Tab, looks really nice, it has everything i could possibly want in a tablet, however I was planning on waiting for the Tegra2 line of Android Tablets. Hopefully they will run just as flawless as the Tab.
Im sorry but 1ghz ftw!
If it comes with HDMI I might get one. It's hard with T-Mobile because they rarely get really nice phones like this so I may get it regardless.
I'm looking into buying a new laptop this week and would love to have some input in making the decision. I have narrowed it down to the HP Dv6 line.. I will need the computer to do some java compiling, rom compiling, some gaming and HD output. I want a 15" as it's not too massive to be easily portable, but still has plenty of screen estate to work with.
The two dv6 models i'm trying to decide between are the 6135dx with an AMD vision a8 processor - found here
http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/de...vilion dv6-6013cl&cp=1&lp=5&pid=1218348120631
And the 6190us with an intel i7 processor - found here http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/de...ilion dv6-6013cl&cp=1&lp=11&pid=1218354581396
The main differences between the two, besides the processors and $500 price gap, is 6gb vs 8gb of memory and 720 vs 1080 display..
Apparently the 6190 is sold out as of right now, but i'm going to call and hope they'll be getting more in soon. The only other laptop i've been really drawn to is the new Dell XPS 15z, but it's $1400.. Here's a link to that one
http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/detail.jsp?skuId=2936073&st=Dell xps&cp=1&lp=6&pid=1218364926276
I really like this one bc of the design, slim and light power house, but lacks a number pad and finger print scanner. I just don't know if i can justify the price.
Which lap top do you think is best suited for my application? I can't decide between the two and normally would go with the i7, but the price difference is huge and the new AMD line seems to be getting pretty good reviews and benchmark results.
Any help or input in making this decision is appreciated!

I don't know what your budget is, but I have gone through 7 laptops over the past 3 months. I couldn't find a configuration I liked. All were HP. I had a DM4, DV6, envy. Finally I got an HP Envy 14, Beats Edition and I love it. 14.5" screen, second generation i7 Quad Core processor, red backlip keyboard. 12 gigs of RAM. I love it.
Well the problem is my local BB has a horrible in store selection, so that's not much of an option. I've been to Microcenter a couple times, but their financing is not near as good as BB, (6 month 0 interest, vs 18).
Both the Dv6 i'm looking at are basically the same hardware, minus the screen and internals, so build quality is very similar. I guess my big question is, is the new AMD A- line processors worth an investment or should I spend more and get an i7 model?
I was looking at the Envy line, but i don't think I need anything on that level. Aside from that, bb doesn't appear to have the model you mentioned online at all unfortunately..

Anyone else have some input on AMD's new 'apu' line vs the Intel i7 line?
Can't decide if i would actually benefit from an i7..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
The new AMD Llano APUs are good for graphics intensive work, but are slow in terms of the CPU itself. They're not competing yet on the high-end.
Imo, you'd be far better off with an i7 (or i5) and a decent onboard graphics chip. For the record, that's coming from an AMD user too.
I would grab yourself an ASUS or Toshiba laptop if you can, as having worked in repair shops in the past: I can tell you right off, HP are unreliable.
Hmm..ok good to know.. I've had an old hp dv1000 for about 5 years with no hardware issues, but the main reason why I'm attracted to the HP line now is the size and weight, compared to other 15" i7 models they're slimmer and lighter. Well, with the exception of the Dell 15z, but that's very pricy and i'm not sure if its worth it for me.
I've played with a few Toshiba and some feel too plasticy and same with a few Asus models..the HPs just feel very solid for the price in comparison to everything else

At the end of the day, it is your choice. My personal experience is that HP (Compaq), Dell and Acer (eMachines/Packard Bell) have the highest hit rate for all desktop/laptop machines. HP and Acer branches being the worst.
I recently got my girlfriend a low-end ASUS laptop (K25F?) I can vouch that it's extremely good build quality for the price. Their higher end models are even better. Lenovo/Toshiba are very good at the high end.
I use ASUS parts in all the machines I build, along with Corsair and OCZ products.
The choice is yours, I'd recommend reading up on reviews. Overclock.net is a good place to seek advice too.

Samsung are very good imo, I use Samsung for all monitors/TV. I've had a couple of charger ports to repair in the past, but no more so than other manufacturers.
Thank you for your reply, your opinion is definitely valued and taken into consideration. I suppose I should try to steer clear of HP then. BB doesn't have a great selection of Asus computers, mainly low end ones. I'm trying to stay in the 1200 max range and get the best bang for my buck.
I found a Lenovo with very similar specs to the Samsung I mentioned above -

I'd definitely choose the Lenovo, it has a better GPU, more weight yet thinner (as ridiculous as it sounds heavier products tend to have better build quality) and it's $150 cheaper. It also looks better
The Samsung however does have USB 3.0 ports, I can't find any listed information on the Lenovo.
EDIT: The Lenovo has USB 3.0 ports. Definitely the better bang for buck.

Not a problem, drop me a message if you have any questions. Good luck!
I have almost hit the purchase button on the note but considering value of atrix 2, which only has slight less performance combined with quad core 10" Transformer which will probably get ICS before note.
Anyone else thought in these terms and still purchased note? Any realistic justifications or "just bought what you wanted"?
Same price.
Two different items my friend, go with what suits YOUR needs
I think when we consider these devices needs have little to do with it. I am doing just fine with a transformer and a symbian phone. I just WANT an android phone because I do use the tablet every single day and it is so awesome. So the choice, for me, is a lesser android phone and the new quad core (giving my existing transformer to a family member) or the Note. I am certain that ICS will come to the Asus device way before it does to the phones and I am keen on getting ICS. Don't think it will at all to the Atrix 2 or this would be an easy decision for me. Other choice for me is the HTC Vivid which will probably get ICS by end of March; that would be more expensive to get than the Atrix 2.
Personally, get the note. My gtab10 hasn't been turned on in weeks and I used to use it every day for work/play. The note (for me) totally fills the tablet role while still being a phone AND has the advantage of always being with me.
Now I just need someone to make a back cover with credit card slots and I can ditch my wallet!

A great idea and one I have considered. Especially since Asus has been FANTASTIC about releasing updates on the transformer.
But I am afraid if I did that, then when it started shipping I would want to wait on the newly announced 8 core device, and when that starts shipping I may want to wait on the newly announced 16 core device and...
I'm not up to date on the Asus specs, but here's a perspective you may want to consider:
Fuhgedda about all dem fancy specs...
What do I mean? Well, super quadcore specs only really count in one area -- games. The Note already has a good arsenal of games, and with OnLive maturing, it won't really matter too much anyway. In other words, for gaming, besides display size, Note == Asus.
For everything else, including e-books, web surfing, remote PC, music/video... these are easily handled by anything dual core+ and above. Again, Note == Asus.
So the real question is not hardware specs, but usability. Do you prefer a bigger platform that a large tablet offers, but that you can't bring with you everywhere? Yes?... then Asus. You will still need a separate smartphone for everyday and everywhere use, however.
Or do you prefer a device that gives you just about everything you need in your pocket (including a portable pocket gaming console)... If so, then the Galaxy Note is your answer...

8 cores are barely viable on PC, so you wont see them on phones anytime soon. unless they start playing it smart and taking advantage of CUDA instead of the cpu, then they could save power and still have kick ass performance.
as an example, my cpu has 8 hyperthreaded cores overclocked to 5ghz and draws 200w of power. my old geforce gtx560 ti soc has 384 cuda cores running at 2ghz and also draws 200w of power. take a guess which one can handle calculations faster?
if they start working on improving the way the GPU is used on phones, we can have faster phones that use less power.
but since the asus padfone is supposed to launch q1 2012, its not that long of a wait for a kick ass setup.

the asus padfone is a quad core phone that docks into a tablet. ie. you have the portability of a phone whenever you need it, and you can dock it into a tablet whenever you want to.
not too sure about you, but tablets are pretty portable. you can just carry them around in your messenger bag since some tablets only weigh like 700g.
OK... Quick question. Why does ANYONE need 4 cores on a PHONE???? What would you be doing to require 4 cores? Really!!! Angry birds? The top games? Some picture editing (which is still fine, and in reality, all you'd need is more RAM rather than more speed)?
4 Cores seems like over kill right now and for the next 2-3 years. I don't see a use for it. I use my phone for:
calls, casual gaming, browsing the web, watching videos, listening to music. I also had the blackberry 9900 which was a 1.2ghz single core, and I didn't get any hiccups on that device. Now we have 2 1.4 ghz processors.
ICS will come to both devices. pick the device you MOST like. Don't get hung up on processors on mobile devices that are originally intended to make calls and write messages. Sure, it's important, but I wouldn't want mediocre battery life and 4 cores that I wouldn't even use. That's just me.

Good points.
However, I do believe that the quad cores, per everything I have read, get BETTER battery life due to increased efficiency. We will have to wait and see about real-world performance.
Will make decision today, either a 32GB note or an HTC vivid.

I think it's hilarious that people spend thousands of dollars on parts for new gaming computers to play World of Warcraft "better" when it runs just fine on 5 year old tech. Or how the powers that be keep adding new dimensions to textures and special effects but they forget to add new dimensions to the games themselves. Kind of the same deal.

If we are satisfied with our tegra3 devices, we shouldn't care that much about the next tegra. This one is good enough to play any games we want, without any lag. We can go further and overclock the cpu for even more performance. The technology is advancing every day, but I think there's nothing to worry about, especially when we have such powerful devices.
*crosses fingers that next Nexus 7 type of device will have Tegra 4 and 1080P*
It would take both of those for me to want to upgrade from my current Nexus 7.
The software/programmable modem and the HDD features are actually nice new features, which could help make some good devices.
The problem is going to be how many manufacturers still want to use Tegra over the new chips from Qualcomm and even Intel. But that's all good for the consumer though, as it keeps everyone on their toes.
I liked the look of the Shield last night at their press conference and can't wait for my briefing with Nvidia tomorrow to hopefully get a hands on.

IMO even if we get a new Nexus tablet with Tegra 4 onboard - there's not much sense in rushing towards the newer tech - N7 today is one of the fastest and most powerful tablets on the market and it's available for more than reasonable price
So don't rush - just wait until Nexus y2014

Yea you can build a $500 PC that will run games mostly maxed.
Anyway on Tegra4... nah. The Tegra is kind of a double edged sword. It is nice when games are built for it and optimized but it sucks when they aren't.
Most other GPUs just work with what they got... and work good. Plus NVidia has always been complicated to work with in Linux because of their closed sourced drivers. So when there are problems like how our screen washes out after movies and the likes, we devs can't fix them but only find workarounds.
This also means the community can't optimize the drivers ourselves. We are reliant on Nvidia to spoon feed us fixes and support. The same oppression we love to loathe.
The transition from 3 to 4 doesn't even really strike me as a must have.
Kinda sucks for the Onya gaming box though... it is going to be Tegra3. That would have been a good thing to simultaneously release together. And I can't remember anything that was Tegra3 only outside of timed releases.
Concluding that my N7 is great and does what I want when I want. I'm keeping this for the long haul. I'm still happy with it. I'm not sure what could even sway me into a new device.

Apple treats every mobile product as a flagship. This is part of their business model; their newest product is always the best, and better than anything else they have to offer. This is how they continue to jack up the price and convince people to keep paying for it. "Well, I paid $700 for the last iThing, and they say this one is better. It must surely be worth the $800 they're charging."
On topic, I think nVidia is playing some numbers game with this 72-core gpu. The same way HDD makers sell a 1TB drive that really has 850GiB of space. The same reason your internet company measures their speed in Mbits instead of Mbytes, while it is impossible for them to transfer a single bit. They use some linguistical magic so they can use bigger numbers to describe the product.

I have to agree, its a numbers game. Anyone remember when amd spanked intel at lower clock speeds?
Not to mention "core fatigue" how many threads can one program run before the complexity makes it unmanageable? Before race conditions become a nightmare? I hit race conditions while compiling with 4 cores 5 jobs with gcc, not very often but it happens and simply trying again without any changes works..
With apple you get a one size fits all, "designer" device. You're buying "apple" brand. Yeah apple can make some good quality products and can even make some revolutionary ideas, but so does Louis Vuitton.
Is it worth the extra 600$ to stamp an apple on it?

I guess if this is true, I'll be holding off for a while after it intros to upgrade from my 2012 to the new one.

LOL, Yeah I agree... All of a sudden my decision not to upgrade to the 2013 N7 seems like was perfectly warranted. WOW, kinda hard to wrap my head around 4 times the performance. Lets hope its not at the cost of 4 times the power consumption, hahaha. Even with a bigger battery it might get to warm to carry around without using it outdoors in a stiff wind. lol
Seems like a kinda far-fetched rumor.
Hummmmmm Really????

I was thinking the same thing.. But it was 70 two days ago then the next day 12 deg with 2 inches of snow ..
Nothing Surprises me anymore.
Intel has already announced the CPU family weeks ago, and it is no longer a rumor. They have one called the Merrifield Z3480, which is a dual-core and runs at 2.13 Ghz, and another Called Moorefield Z3580, which is Quad-core and runs at 2.35 ghz. Both are native 64bit processor SoC's and combine many of the devices needed to perform mobile functions.
Here’s a look at the Intel Z3480 Merrifield SoC:
2.13 GHz dual-core 64-bit-ready SoC (Intel’s 22nm process technology on Silvermont microarchitecture)
13 MP support hardware-capable; 8 MP enabled on Form Factor Device (FFD)
LPDDR3 memory, 2×32 bit, up to 4 GB; 8.5 GB/s
USB 3.0; eMMC 4.5
Android 4.4.2 OS support
1080p 60 fps video recording and playback
H.265 (HEVC) and VP9 support <--- This is amazing
Imagination PowerVR G6400 GPU
Intel Mobile Wireless Display (Intel WiDi)
Intel XMM 7160 LTE Modem for 4G, 3G and 2G
Bluetooth 4.0 low energy, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac)
Digital Rights Management (DRM) support
HDCP 2.x for premium content over HDMI

The only thing hard to believe for me is the fact that Nexus may get it. I mean a SoC like this is bound to be expensive, right? Intel isn't known for supplying cheap processors. I would think just the SoC alone is going to be $200. No?
Looks like there is also talk of a Nexus 6... My only question is are these devices just gonna keep getting bigger and bigger????
Seems like soon we will have the nexus tablets with 15 inch screens!! I like the size of my n7 and I hope they keep it.

I think eight inch is better than seven. 6" 8" and 10" seems perfect. They do not design these to cover a need, they design them to sell them. Sadly, humans think when a number goes higher it is automatically better. Even when you realize its not, your brain continues to work that way. If they released another Nexus 7, it would not sell as much as the new Nexus 8.
8" could be done the same size as the nexus 7. Might not be too bad. Personally I'd like something bigger for NY next tablet but I don't want an Intel processor. They are usually weaker on graphics and some apps are not compatible.

Also think about what LG is doing with bezels... You could get an 8" display in the size of the Nexus 7 frame today, or with very little increase in size.
Not saying LG is the OEM or anything, but bezels are getting smaller and smaller, which means larger screens in the same overall device size.

negative, a 6" phone is too big for many people.
also i've heard the new intel chips will be no good for the custom ROM community: http://androidcommunity.com/intels-...g-trouble-for-android-customization-20140317/

Scary, but not surprising coming from Intel. The more I think about it the more I don't like the idea of an Intel processor. Too many bad memories of the crappy atom processors in netbooks don't help.

Yeah, I like that idea about less bezel, but I also do not want zero bezel, or some of your fingers flesh while holding it could get in the way. Maybe 1/8 or 1/4 wide bezel, no more. I just know I want a 8" or 9" screen tablet for doing business while I am still in bed. I usually wake up about 5 hours after going to bed, and I can't keep from checking email, paypal, ebay, replying to client questions and customer concerns, etc. I spend 45 minutes every morning and I find the screen and font sizes too small on the N7. I know I can change font sizes, but it just don't fit right. I think another inch, or inch and a half, would make it a little bit better to do business while my eyes are still tired. After 45 minutes my eyes are extremely sore from the constant focusing, and trying to read. Maybe larger fonts and more screen real-estate and my eyes wouldn't get so tired. And I feel that 10" may be just a little too big to snuggle with, lol... But I don't know...
Yeah a 6" phone would be stupid. So, maybe a 5" phone tops, 8" tablet and a 11", to replace the 10?
Oh, and why on earth would it not be good for custom roms and Intel processors? The worlds best chip maker and no one wants one in their mobile device? I would think the source would still be released regardless of the chip type and maker.

Then you need to read up. Intel has a bad reputation in the past with Linux and their atom chip. They are also known for locking down features and building things mainly for Windows.

Yes, I am well aware of their past Atom woes. But that does not automatically mean these new processors will suffer the same fate.
And it looks possible that Google may have tapped HTC to manufacture this beast...
