hi, whenever i do a battery pull my clock resets itself. from personal experience with RTC's (real time clocks) they usually have a small backup battery that prevents data loss during battery pulls. does the note have such a battery? anyone knows the model of this battery?
i wanna make sure i can get a new one before i go and try crack open my phone.

also, i do have network time set up, so after 30 seconds or so my phone updates the current time and date from the network. but by then whatsapp has already started and everything is just a messup. i just want the RTCC to keep its data on battery pulls(i constantly swop batteries during the day, heavy heavy note user)

I don't think they're using internal batteries in smartphones anymore. Not sure they ever did.
Haven't looked at Note's board, but usually the chip we're talking about is powered by a capacitor that starts to discharge when you remove the battery. This should allow it to keep the settings for about 48 hours.
If your phone loses that data everytime, and immediately after removing the battery, it might mean a faulty capacitor.
This might qualify for a warranty replacement. Try contacting support and see what they have to say.

makes sense to rather use a supercap like the one u mention. strange that it would break tho. supercaps have extremely long lifespan. im not sure i have warranty on my device. bought it second hand and flashed so many roms haha. in South africa theres almost no technical support for anything. perhaps i should try email tech supp over seas. if i can get my hands on the cap ill be able to replace it myself

Recommended replacement for Kaiser?

Hi all - my poor Kaiser has suffered the dreaded RLOD. Tried every possible fix short of a new battery... which I should get in the mail this week.
If the phone itself is bricked, what would people recommend in terms of a replacement/upgrade? I'm in Canada on Rogers so it has to be a GSM phone. Generally use it for business apps.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Slider keyboard, Touch Pro II or AT$T Tilt 2: Screen keyboard, Touch HD. Or wait for HTC's rumored ( and I think just a rumor, complete with " leaked " photoshopped pics) superphone, the HTC Leo.

I was in the same position a couple days ago.
I decided to replace mine with another Kaiser. And I got the part to fix my dying phone as well, for a bit more. Less than $200 spent for two.
In good condition a Kaiser can be had for well under $150.
A fixer-upper can be pieced together for well under $100. (you've torn a Kaiser apart a few times? New screen, etc?) Parts are cheap and a junker to fix (Broken screen or hinges...) is almost free.
But if I were willing to have a contract, the Tilt II or a variant with number keys across the top... sure looks good. I haven't compared the size and weight, but since I already carry a tiny brick, it would be fine, I'm sure. I understand it's better in a few ways. (Audio jack, Screen resolution) and with more horsepower, the screen updates may be quicker, accelerated drivers or not!
I went with the Kaiser, but I did not know about the Tilt II until after I had purchased. Saved me some money, and now I have a backup with identical (but not as pretty) hardware.
Seems like win-win with either platform!

Not sure what to suggest re a replacement (and your budget will likely come into it as well) but how about detailing all the fixes you've tried - you may have missed one or two and there have been extensive posts on the topic here. It'd be much preferable, I'm sure you agree, to fix it at low or nil cost rather than having to buy a replacement.
Hey guys - first off, thanks for the suggestions above. The offerings from my carrier are weak (best right now is Touch Diamond) but I may look for an aftermarket Tilt 2.
Flying Kiwi, I would definitely be happy to get my Tilt working again - even just to squeeze a few more months out until the Hero is available here. I've read through every thread I could find about RLOD and haven't had any luck. Its actually the second time I've had the red light... the first time was about three months ago. I left the SIM and battery out overnight and the next day it came back to life... but my battery life was severely shortened after that. I could barely get 8 hours out of it before it was at 0%.
On Friday of last week it ran out of juice completely and RLOD was waiting for me in the morning. I tried leaving the battery and SIM out as before and I actually did get the amber light back at one point. I immediately plugged the charger in and hoped it would be fine like last time. Unfortunately the red light was back about 2 minutes later.
Based on the various posts on the subject, I've tried pressing buttons in a specific order, tried "jump starting" the battery, cleaned the contacts, etc... not even a hint of life. That's why I'm thinking that a new battery might be the only chance I have left. But if you know of any other methods I'd love to try!
Man, I miss my phone.....

If you do have a known fully charged battery (perhaps borrowing a friends one) it'd be worth performing a hard reset. It does sound like a spot of the same trouble I briefly had a year or so ago though and I rectified it very quickly with a careful, thorough contact clean (both the spring contacts and battery terminals). I realise you've said you performed a contact clean but what did you use and how did you do it? I don't know if you're aware but it's possible for invisible film to ruin the connection and what looks like a clean connection could still be to blame... If you have a cradle charger, you could also try charging the battery in that before fitting it and perfoming a hard reset. They're cheap enough to buy and enable you to charge 2 batteries at a time (1 in the phone and 1 in the cradle bay).
No luck.... just tried to clean it again with acetone and still the red light. Twas a good thought though!!
And I've searched around for a replacement battery but no one around here has this particular phone... its not generally available up here so I bought one from eBay.

I wouldn't give up on that being a cause, especially given the 2 mins on charge scenario. I suggest you use the product specifically designed for such cleaning jobs, contact cleaner (and apply it with the end of a cotton bud soaked in the stuff). A few gentle rubs with this will ensure it's electrically connecting fine.
And I've searched around for a replacement battery but no one around here has this particular phone... its not generally available up here so I bought one from eBay.

I bought a battery (and cradle charger bundle) from eBay for my Kaiser and although it works, the quality certainly wasn't up to the original one that came with the phone. It doesn't fit as well either and causes the back cover to protrude a little rather than sitting flush. Twas very cheap though

I will definitely leave it charging overnight and hope that it decides to spring to life. My biggest concern is that the red light stays on even if the battery out - while plugged in of course. Just makes me think the phone itself is pooched.

I wish I'd thought of that before ordering this new battery... although if it works I'll likely order another battery and cradle as a back up right away.
Although now that I'm looking at these Touch Pro 2s on eBay they're looking very tempting.

You needn't think that because the battery has to be installed (and working) for the phone to run - I'd definitely suggest you don't try charging without a battery installed again. This is because some electronic circuits which are designed to be run under load can sometimes be damaged if powed up while not loaded (PSUs inside PCs are a good example). It's worth buying a small can of specialist contact cleaner. It's cheap enough and will do the best job possible in the situation if used with some cotton buds/Q-Tips.
Although now that I'm looking at these Touch Pro 2s on eBay they're looking very tempting.

You mustn't have got to the bit with the price in it then (nor checked whether they have full Qualcomm accelerated graphics driver support to perform optimally for an MSM72xx chipset device) Still, they do appear to be an improvement over the Kaiser if only a limited one.
I'd definitely suggest you don't try charging without a battery installed again.

Seems like the original battery is worn out and the phone has drained every drop. Most likely there are some capacitors or something that aren't getting charged because of the charger board not having power.. I've seen devices that work like this, there isn't enough juice to start it up and charge the battery or even power the phone properly. I'm sure there is some sort of small bios type battery on there that is drained as well.

I give up, how do you charge a battery without it being in the phone? It is possible to plug in the charger and power it without a battery installed however (although the phone wont boot in this state) and this may cause damage.

It may but a hard reset may also show that some corruption in the ROM may be to blame or contributing to the problem and of course a hard reset isn't possible with a flat battery. I'm not willing to rule either out as a potential cause of the problem at this stage.

Hey guys - I appreciate all of the advice, really do.
Good to know that the red light should be on while charging with the battery out... not something I was doing for a long period, just happened while I was trying the various fixes. Hopefully the new battery comes in and works because I wouldn't be rushing to drop $700+ on a Touch Pro 2.
Oh and I like cats too.
Wanted to provide a (late) update. My Kaiser's problem was purely battery-related. I finally got a new battery today and the RLOD cleared up right away.
Not sure if it will come back or whether my battery life will be compromised, though...

I am first writing this mesaage on a type pad app because I've had bizzare experience with my captivate's connection.
The problem has been occuring ever since I've got my phone. .. three years now, but recently is gettimg worse and worse. No matter if I am with a stock software, or cm 7,9,10,10.1. No matter kernels, modems or taking it to a voodoo magician in Africa, it still drops connection, and battery dies within 40min!
I have bough 5 batteries even the ones that claim that are to have up time twice as longer as a nornal batteries still drain for 40min.
The problem: phone heats up 46-48+ degreese, starts freezing, connection from normal drops to if I were in hell itself.. I turn airplane mode on/off.. doesn't work. I have calibrated batteries... doesn't work. I take out the battery.. put it back in from 89%.. shows me 1% and phone dies. (As I'm typing this message.. I've lost 20%+ and the connection dropped 5 times at least.
My question: wtf?!
I see s3, s4 have similar problems, you would think that someone from samsung will sit down read these forums and fix up the problem before selling you a garbage companion for $700.
I have decided to switch phones, iphone.. forget it for obvious reasons... R.I.P. Nokia since windows decided to "give them a kick start" ... what else is out there?! I need a phone! If I needed something needy that would eat up my paycheck by fixing it every month id have kids. Most likely your phone has a hardware problem. You had to address this issue during the warranty period.
Samsung is the largest mobile phone manufacturer. A phone with a problem here and there is normal, just like with every other mobile electronic device. There are millions of Galaxy phones sold through the years and this simple fact proves the quality of the product Samsung offers. Just go ahead and find a phone you like best. It will work as expected with 99.99% probability. The warranty covers the rest 0.01%.

[Q] Replacement battery? (reboot problem solved)

Hello everyone,
During the last few months I've had issues where my Xperia X8 would randomly enter a repetitive reboot. After five or so reboots, the phone would stabilize and would function normally for a few days until the same thing happened again.
Lately, it started doing it more often, and especially when I was to either make a call or surf the internet for longer than a minute or two. In other words, the problem finally caught my attention as it interfered with the basic functions of a smartphone.
After restoring a six-months old back-up, removing all of the mostly unused apps, formatting the SD card, testing another SIM card and trying out the GingerDX ROM instead of FroyoPro, nothing of which did anything to solve the problem, I asked a fellow X8 user to lend me his battery for a few days as a last ditch fix which I could do on my own. Luckily, this turned out to be the culprit. Now I'm four days in without a single restart and the phone working faster than ever being all cleaned up.
A short story was made long for future reference if anyone else happened to have the same issue. I also posted in this forum instead of Accessories because this one is most active. Sorry about that
Now I'm in the need of a replacement battery, as my friend would prefer to get his battery back. No fancy stuff - a simple 1200 mAh replacement would do. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Exactly, and some of the reviews look completely rigged.
Anyway, by some stroke of luck I found what seemed to be the only shop in town that still had the EP500 model replacement battery in their storage, so no ordering via web-shop or other internet venues was necessary. I'm from Croatia, so it ended up costing 9£, which would be the exact equivalent as if I had ordered a similar model from Amazon, taking total shipping into account.
One day in, one call, ~10 SMSs and an hour of so worth of listening to music later, about 15% of the battery was spent, but keep in mind I only use 2G and the phone puts itself on airplane mode during night time.
So, I'm satisfied The only thing I can recommend is that you absolutely try your local vendors before trying anything else, as you do get warranty in most cases and you can easily return the battery if it explodes.

Should I upgrade or is it my phone?

My phone is only 3-4 months old and it's starting to overheat and lose battery fairly quick 5-6 hours usage max. I want to try rooting on stock, but I don't want to have to manually flash monthly security updates.. I'm just kind of over all of that now. I went to FAA and am no longer a flashaholic like I was in my early 20's. I also, don't have the time for it, and the random hiccups or break downs when I need my phone to work 100% of the time.
I don't understand why this is happening. The phone is in like new condition. I could easily list and sell it as like new, because I've kept it in a case, never let it near water or dropped it. I subconsciously know to put my keys in the opposite pocket as my phone (very good habit to get into I must add). So I think I could get a lot for this phone on Amazon looking at the prices it's being sold $350 now (I paid $300 for it months ago, but it's discontinued, and people do still want this). I would list it for $325. My seller feedback is 100% with 9 other smartphones sold with feedback stating I sell my products exactly as described, so when I list, they usually sell within 24 hours.
I don't want to sell, but would A. Would it be smart since I can basically get my money back and upgrade without losing much (if any) money after fees? B.) Do you think there's a fix, or is my phone going bust? C.) With the phone being 3-4 months old, should I just get Motorola to replace it? I heard they give 64GB new replacements for the cloud whites for Amazon customers. Then I could sell that and actually buy a 6P for not much more, and have a 6 mos old phone as opposed to a 1.5 old model.

What does your seller feedback have to do with upgrading your phone, or whether it is defective?
Why does it matter that other phones sell within 24 hours? If your Samsung Galaxy S5 took 25 hours to sell, does that mean your Nexus 6 doesn't have an overheating problem?
I would recommend doing a factory reset to make sure that it isn't some malfunctioning apps that are causing this, before you send it in to Moto, or sell it for more than you paid (which is somehow relevant to the issue at hand).
We have no idea if your N6 is defective. That's up to you to decide and RMA with Motorola if you want. Motorola may send you a brand new or refurbished phone.

I'm just stating I could sell it if I had to and get what I paid for it, if buying a new phone is a better decision. Idk if this a common problem with the Nexus 6 or not. Everything is pretty much bone stock. I don't want Touchwiz or any bloated phone. I'd rather get another Nexus, but I am worried about the SD810. Is the SD810 in the 6P better than it is in the OP2 and LG phones? I prefer no bloatware. I'm very minimal with my apps.

What would cause it to start lagging and getting so hot that I have to turn it off for 15-20 minutes for doing nothing, but reading or taking calls. I keep the brightness almost all the way down 99% of the time to keep the phone from getting burn in too. I've done everything I can to baby this phone for the day I do decide to resell it, but I've never had a phone just start going crazy except when I had custom ROMs on it, but it's stock now. I've tried wiping cache. I still haven't done a FDR, but I did those for people when I worked in wireless in college, and that was always a last ditch effort that never really solved a problem like this.
Not trying to be funny or weird, but I don't watch porn or visit weird websites. It's always news, check Facebook on their webpage, and Google now. Gmail attachments from co-workers and family and friends. So I don't think I could have a virus. Can a chip or RAM just go bad one day?

It could be a wide variety of things. From apps (which clearly it isn't, given the provided information) to hardware. Whether it's a defective battery that's getting hot under very minimal loads or during charging, or whether it's a dying chip/something shorting out which is generating much more heat than it should. Download System Monitor Lite on Google Play and see what temperatures your CPU and battery are running on, and at what frequencies/loads it ramps up at. If the temps ramp up even when there's no CPU usage, then it's probably hardware and Motorola/Google (depending on the origin of device) will do their best to satisfy you within a week. If your CPU usage is constantly hitting high numbers you should probably factory reset your device.
Hope this gets you a step further, unlike other comments..

Thank you for the useful information. I'm going to check that out the next couple hours and if it seems to have odd frequency's, I'll go ahead and FDR it and give it another day. Then if it has the problem still, I'll go ahead and do a warranty claim. I just would hate to be without a phone for however long they will make me be without one, but it's getting pretty severe. A few weeks ago my Google now app updated and my phone had severe battery drain and got warmer than usual (Google now was at around 25% in battery usage). So I decided to FDR and then install a nandroid backup I had and problem solved. So imho apps can cause the symptoms you describe.

i had the same problem, man it's nasty i could not figure out what is was! i tried everything hard reset safe made etc.! Nothing would fix it.. i was so lucky i phoned Samsung they go it’s a hardware issue and the only option is replace the phone this was on the 30th day I rang them!
Samsung offer within 30 days swop, so i got mine swopped it’s perfect this one! Best thing is ring Samsung as they also offered me a battery replacement.. i told them to do one, as I didn’t want a battery replacement they didn’t like me saying that..
i got a brand new sealed replacement phone off them (not refurb) But if you ring them, they will replace the battery for you! That’s the best route you got!
Also make sure you take pics of your handset before you send it off, as there are clowns working at Samsung repair centres.. Some user have had damaged NOTE-9 returned to them so you got proof if you do get some damage on your phone!

Battery is not upto mark
Samsung battery drains fast as their apps eat up a lot of data and power. Samsung needs to improve over this part. My best friend has Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and he is not happy with the phone, and he always carries a power bank along with him.

Get your best friend to ring up Samsung and get the battery replaced! 2 year warranty Samsung smartphones come with!

Unfortunately,it's not a cut & dried/one-size-fits-all situation & neither are the solutions.
However,there is a lot to consider before resorting to seeking Samsung to just replace your phone (I seriously doubt they would w/o a LOT of trial & error before doing so).
With that said,there's a lot of apps/services that are intertwined with Android System.
Most are going to be either Google OR Samsung apps that are pre-installed.
Check the battery optimizations,optimize those that don't need to be on 24-7 or,rely on for push notifications.
Also,check background data usage on a per-app basis,most apps really don't need this,less those that you use &/or rely on auto updating/push notifications.
There's plenty of other battery life threads here,feel free to take a look around,I'm sure you'll glean some useful information from 'em.
