I reciveved my phone yesterday and after playing with it for a few hours I charged it last night and noticed it became hot to the touch in a few minutes of being plugged in. Like burn your hand hot and there was a bit of a hot plastic smell coming off it. I unplugged it let it rest. Today I have no usb access to it. No adb, no fastboot. Lsusb shows no devices etc.

Xplodwild tweeted out the other day about issue with USB charging similar to this. Does the same happen when AC charging?
Is this problem similar to this guy?
Watch out for overheating!
seems to be a similar issue - it was very hot on the back side just below the camera especially I'm just afraid it got too hot and something was damaged.
This explains why google was pushing their bumpers instead of a full case I can't imagine a case would be good for this things thermal characteristics.
This happened while charging via ac when charging via usb it just seems to hold steady at whatever level the battery was.
Just out of interest, what surface did you leave it on all night?

I left it on a wooden desk for 5 to 10 minutes it didn't take long
It is no longer charging. I can't get it back to stock to rma I'm not happy :crying:
Woah, all other nexus 4 problems aside, this one is quite serious.
Just imagine what would have happened if you'd have left it on a easily flammable surface and wouldn't have noticed the heat. Worst case scenario might have been a fire or something like that.
If this really is a common problem (I've already seen at least two people reporting similar issues), we might see a big recall campaign quite soon.
I guess you don't really want the LiPo battery in your phone burst like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3o_2mwRPdw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Maybe Google should start to sell these bags instead of the bumper
Where you using the provided USB-AC adapter?
I know that my friends GS2 and GS3 got really hot when using my playbook wall charger (rated at 5v ~1.8A) :S
Heard of similiar issues with nexus 7, but the one I'm aware of is still charging.
I haven't experienced this issue yet?
I contacted google play they were quite happy to send me a replacement. Aparently they held back stock in case of a need for returns. HOWEVER they tried to charge an authorization hold on my account in the ammount of $350 I DONT HAVE ANY DAMNED MONEY I JUST SPENT IT on their ****! The only other option they said was to return it for a refund and wait a large number of weeks for orders to open up again or send it directly to LG for the same treatment ?!? I'm PISSED. The guy said that this was not the first case he'd heard of like mine didn't even ask any questions except for the serial number - I'd expect that there are going to be quite a few issues like this.

Yeah, sounds like my problem. Was your microUSB port also loose/creaky like mine? I got Google to RMA me a new one. It's a shame, I love this phone and this one has no give on the screen whatsoever and no rattle. The port though and the screen flicker are another story...

I don't have screen flicker yet and the port isn't lose I'm thinking somebody cut some corners on the voltage regulation

Damn, I guess this is sorta good news for all the folks (myself included) whose banks dropped the authorization, haven't had Google recharge us, and have the phone in hand.
Hey guys, I used this search function, together with Google, but I can't seem to find any information, I know there was a thread like that, but I can't find it... So sorry if someone is annoyed ^^

So I got my nexus 7 for a few weeks now, and four days ago it started to smell burned while charging... After this smell, battery life seems weird.. MAX. Stats are a few hours standby time (10) (lost 1% per hour with everything turned off) and 3-4 hours screen time until its discharged.. Before that, max stats were 1 day and 6-7 screen on time...
While charging, I am now smelling like a dog around my tablet and charger (which scares some people around me) but it doesn't smell anymore, and its charging properly.
So I'm not sure, if it REALLY is broken, or its just something I'm telling myself .. Because to be honest, if the battery would be screwed it should smell again and should charge like hell, or slow as a snail.., but charging is fine, like day one..,
I'm searching for people who had a smelling nexus 7 and what they've done.., and what consequences they had...
Thank you in advance
P.S.:To help myself, I'll charge it full (again) and make a MANUAL (fastboot) factory reset, maybe this helps... And also I can say it can't be an app, because I use the same I used when I bought it... So ^^

Where did you get the device from? It may be worth just swapping it if you purchased from the Play Store.

Got it from Media Markt, but its an act to get there, (for me) since I got no car ^^ its insured also... So I'll get a replacement for sure, but maybe I don't have to... I had a lot devices which smelled weird once but worked for years... So, maybe it just sucked too much power once.. The problem is, I can't live without this tablet so maybe I'll call MM and ask if they have one in stock to get.. But again, maybe I don't have to.. That's why I'm searching "smelling" people

You must have some Labrador or Blood Hound in your DNA to be able to smell your devices charging lol.
On a serious note, have you tried watching the temps of the CPU and battery while its charging?

Yup, everything was normal.. This is what scares me I did a factory reset now... After setting everything up, (open all installed apps, go through settings, sync, update apps, setting the phone up in general, one reboot), I lost 2%, which is average ^^ I'm testing now.. But its confusing
Edit: and while charging, it didn't smell... This is weird...

Going by your description of the problem, I would be leaning towards strongly suspecting that a component has (or is in the process of) burning out.
Does your Nexus smell when you charge it on either a different charger or PC USB port? If not then it may just be the charger is going bad - which in the big picture is no biggie (better the charger than the Nexus)
If on the other hand, the Nexus smells regardless of where you charge it, I would be seriously considering a warranty claim fairly soon. It may have been a freak occurance, but ultimately it has the potential to have drastically reduced the overall lifespan of your device - even if absolute failure has not occured.
Obviously it's your call buddy, but it shouldn't have happened in the first instance, and i'd be a bit paranoid that it could be a sign of worse to come.

The charger was my second thought.. I don't trust these things ^^
Right after this smell accident I unplugged it, and now I'm using a new socket to charge on. No smelling on laptop and the new socket... But if the old socket was the reason, then maybe when I use it the next time it will go up in flames, or my nexus does.. I'm going to watch out the next days, if any weird behavior is going on I'm going to replace it... But one thing I won't do: charge it overnight
I'm going to check the old socket.. But I need to go into my room, I don't want others to see me smelling lol
Edit: no burned smell...

Sooo, a little info for you and me.
After the full wipe yesterday, I'm on 28% left, with 24h standby, and 5h 48m display time, which is normal for me.. So it seems that the battery is fine (again?)
I'm going to charge it now, and as always, I'm running around the socket, charger and tablet.. I'll edit the post with the info after the full charge..
EDIT: no smelling after & while charging..
I assume it really was the socket I charged on, which I now toss into the trash..
Thanks to everyone who answered
And if I get weird behavior I'll send it in ^^

Hi,
My IncS has started playing up over the past week or so.
Every night now, when I get up in the morning I have to remove the battery from the phone and power it back up as it has totally frozen.
Another weird thing is the battery is normally really drained once I have it powered back up. Doesn't have any problems during the day at all, never freezes or anything but overnight when it is plugged in to charge,it dies.
I've tried replacing the battery (I had a spare) as it only happens when mains charging and, like I said, when it is turned back on the battery is substantially lower then when it was plugged in but that didn't help.
I tried totally wiping the phone and installing a new ROM (szeszo's lovely new cyanogen with his Tesco kernal) and it is still happening...
Anyone else experienced this? Any idea what's caused it? And finally, does anyone know a way I can do so kind of logs about what is going on?
Thanks...
I had the same issue too. Was USB connector related. Had to sent my device to htc repair

Try a different USB cable on the charger
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be the USB port or cable. Thanks for the suggestions though.
It started freezing when it wasn't plugged in at all and it was doing my nut in...
Yesterday I bought a Note 2 and it gets delivered today. I know, it's huge and I'll probably end up selling it on when I get fed up of having to carry it round in a wheel barrow
It is such a damn shame to be putting the IncS to sleep at last. It's been a damn good phone for a long time (probably the longest I've ever used 1 phone for!). Somehow I can't imaging the Note being as well made as this was. The moment HTC do a Nexus phone I'll be selling whatever I have and buying up cos that will be awesome.
Anyway, guess I'll be off to the Note forums now.
Later guys, and thanks...
Hi guys, I bought htc one, almost 6 month ago. It was amazing nd all but i still felt it wasnt working well.
Then i used some roms .. didnt help much. battery was killed. I thought it was coz of rom. Well then finally after asking alot of advice here, I returned htc one to 100% factory settings (pain in the a..) then sent it to warrenty.
Here is a list of all things they changed (attachment). Is that normal?
did i have a really badly made htc one? or did i broke the components by using unoffical chargers/roms/kernels etc etc etc.????
Since I have noticed that it works WAY faster and battery is way better than it was.
maybe its coz i used xcover 2 the time htc one was away so i kinda got used to that piece of s... ? anyhow im way more satesfied with it now than before. but still, this is first time i sent phone to warrenty so i dont know if this much changes to the device is normal or not
Ps. The reason for giving it to warrenty: battery would get to 100%, when unpluged worked normal until 60-70%, then it would just die. no way to turn it on without puting it on charger atleast for 20 minutes.
(if i didnt put it on charger.. after 2-3 hours it would magiclly get 20-40% charge lol)
sorry about my english guys

Wow they changed a lot of things here!
I see 2 options, either your battery over heated and died + damaged some components or they damaged the phone when trying to open it to change the faulty battery/usb port.
Don't worry, at least your phone is working good now, there is so much horror stories about warranty repair here, glad to see yours came back in good condition.

Thanks for the reply bro.
Now i wanna know what caused the death of the battery. was it coz i used some unoffical chargers?
(like samsung charger which is for note 10.1 tablet, and some nokia chargers)
or was it coz i flashed roms way too frequently?
I m scared to unlock it again and start flashing but i really want to

You should only use official chargers, or at least be sure they output the same voltage (5v). There are some tablets charger (i.e Asus TF101) that output 10V and that amount of voltage will probably kill the battery....
Maybe it was only a bad battery, maybe damaged by CPU overheat.... who knows
Flashing roms doesn't damage the battery

Ok, so the culprit was the tablet charger.
Well its good to know about the roms then finally can get back to CM11 until offical sense 6
Hello!
Well, I guess I'm the new (un)lucky owner of my stepfather's Xperia T since he decided Z3 suits him more (not that we are rich, he's just kinda shoppingholic or smth).
I replaced old HTC Wildfire S with it and I was fkin amazed. There was no root or tweak that could ever make that little HTC (who has supported me over the years even after falling in water and all other ****) be even a close match to my shiny new-old XPeria.
However, the phone keeps irritating me with it's charging problems.
I'm an electric engineering student and this crap sounds like connection problem (but I don't wanna admit it to myself), but I still hold your opinions to be very important since well....you guys know this phone through it's soul.
Here is the weird thing...
I got it with it's original charger while I still had a charger I used to charge my HTC. It was some old nokia cable and was charging HTC perfectly, always without a problem, but Xperia always seemed to have a bad connection with it. I tried it's original charger and almost the same. That was bearable until last few days, connection was starting to grow so weak, it took me like half an hour to make the damn phone charge. Worst thing, battery run dry, so can you imagine that feeling when you have to wait 5 seconds before the battery logo does it's animation before you can actually realize if your phone is charging or just "ate a spark".
I've searched on google and many people seem to be having similar, even though much worse problems (phone does not react to the charger at all) and I'm actually afraid that's where my dear Xperia is going.
Weird thing is when I visited my parents last week, I tried plugging it into my mother's charger (S4 charger) the phone started charging immediately, I tried rocking the charger a little left and right, and it didn't seem to distract it.
Tried friend's charger, same problems again!
Can't figure out what the problem might be...I thought it was the cable, then the port, now I don't know what to think of anymore.
Help please!
Thanks guys!
UPDATE:
OK, while I was writing the post and doing other stuff, the phone was charging, I disconnected it now to check for battery level, I succesfully turned it on (no more double red blinking) but the phone just showed PIN screen and Turning off.. note appeared. Which means after half an hour of charging, the battery is at the same level....?
Should I let it charge overnight?
I mean I don't feel comfortable doing it since I can't see the battery and my landlord has no tools in the whole apartment...Maybe the battery might be damaged...
Try your mother's USB cable with your recharger.
I guess it's your USB port that is dying.. .
PS now I know what's a stepfather.. LOL.. Thank you XDA (and thank you Google Translator)

Well, I'm glad you learnt it haha
Wohoo!
Successfully turned it on, after 20minutes of charging it's at 1% and hopefully it's gonna go up!
Oh! In the meantime the phone just turned off again showing empty battery while it was still charging! O.O
FU Sony. Telling my shoppingholic stepdad not to waste money on Z3. -.-
Try to clean the USB port with cotton and alcohol. Maybe it's only some dirt over the metallic contacts.

So the battery is okay.
The problem could be: some dirt, a USB metallic pin bent or broken, the USB port entirely broken, or just an UFO that steals your energy only when you connect it to the recharger
