My fiance has this phone, and she asked me the same thing. Most android phones seem to use power and volume down for a screenshot, which will take a screenshot and send a notification to the sender of the snap. However, on the M7, it's power and home. Using this combo while viewing a snap just turns the phone off. It appears for the M8, HTC changed to use power and volume down, but even though the M7 and M8 both run sense 6 and 4.4, they have different screenshot methods (likely because the home button on the M8 is on screen).

Loving my HTC One, but I have such small hands that I can hardly reach the Power button to wake it up after it goes to sleep!
Does anyone know of an app where I can use the Volume button instead?
Thanks in advance.
Only way to possibly assign the sleep/wake function to the volume buttons would mean having to be rooted. I don't know if anyone's made that change yet though, it might just require editing a single file. Don't have any experience with This myself so not 100%. Just know it requires root.

After a quick search online I've discovered Auto Screen On in the Play Store, which lets me double tap the proximity sensor (left of top speaker) to wake it up.
Works perfectly but an app using the Volume button would be much better.
With this app your screen has to be awake all the time and will drain your battery i think.
On TrickDroid v2.0.0 u can choose VolWake in Aroma

Moved your thread to the proper section for you. Please remember to post only in the correct sections. Thanks.
I've heard of some app for a nexus 4 that allows you to just swipe the screen and it turns on. Not sure what it was called, but you get the concept.
Good job I have big hands really because this nor generally using the phone is an issue due to its size.

I'm assuming sweep2wake or swipe2wake will eventually be implemented. It's basically swiping left to right on the capacitive buttons to wake the phone.
The One X had it, but it was a bit buggy when I used it in terms of it not working if the phone was asleep for a long time. I got rid of my One X a while ago though so idk how the feature works now and if they figured it all out., but I expect it to get implemented on the HTC One eventually.
The proximity sensor isn't a bad idea, jailbroken iPhone 5 etc...have the always on proximity where if you cover the proximity it'll turn the screen off and eventually lock the phone after a while. So you can put it in your pocket and it will turn the display off, bring it out of pocket and it comes on without needing to slide to unlock or anything. It's good if your messaging constantly.

iirc showp1984 said he's getting a htc one, and see oz did too so hopefully one of them will bring sweep to wake Zarboz did an excellent job on the incredible s and he doesn't even have the device
Sweep to wake generally doesn't work sometimes in deep sleep. I use vol wake and the. Sweep to go to sleep on my incredible s now s2w is actually the greatest thing ever
MOD EDIT: Removed
On the HTC one the home and back button does not come on all the time. When i turn the phone on should those the home and back button light up right away??? mine don't. If im in the dark they sometimes come on, not all the time. Just trying to figure out how those 2 buttons are suppose to work.
thanks
steve
They are triggered by (a lack of) ambient light via the light sensor.
Mine come on as soon as i press the power button and turn off soon as i press of

Mine light up when not needed and refuse to shine in the dark. So far I've not been worried about it; thumb finds the right place most of the time

The light sensors on the front top left determine when to turn it off or on. cover them with your finger and the home and back should light up. If not - the light sensors are not working. I've noticed that very little light will trigger these things. even the light from the lcd will be enough light to not allow the home and back keys to light up especially in the dark... Hopefully there will be a tweak forth coming.

do you have a screen protector on? try taking it off and see
I just upgraded to an HTC One, but am having issues with this one and may need to exchange it. Before I do I wanted to see if the issues were at all common or if there is a fix for any of them.
Issues:
1. The power button is sunk in a bit. Not flush, but below the hole. It is very difficult to push and has been driving me nuts.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
5. Do I have to force close the power app everytime I restart the phone?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.
Thank you for any help.

Me too. I am gonna RMA it, this is a QC issue. Two of my other ones are fine, this one is bad.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
Does your auto brightness work properly? Many people were reporting problems with the ambient light sensor.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
I have no idea what this is. Google voice probs?
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
HTC has sacrificed functionality for aesthetics. You'll get used to it, though.
5. Do I have to force close the power app everytime I restart the phone?
Why would you do this? Does the power saver notification bother you so much?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.
Double tap home.

Yes, a case makes it much easier because then there is nothing to stop your fingers from pressing the volume buttons. The bezel is the culprit here.
True, but I can't imagine not having a case for such a beautiful phone

1: How flush is it? Mine is flush but I can still press it easily without a case on. With a case on, I have to place my finger a certain way.
2: The buttons are light sensitive. So if you're in the dark, they will light up. If you're out in the sun or in a room with the light on, they won't light up. That's one thing I love about HTC.
3: Umm maybe spotty coverage? Or it could be a defect. Not sure about that one.
4: Volume rocker is fine if you don't have a case on. Just try hitting it near the very top or bottom to make it easier.
5: Are you asking about the power saver notification? If yes then yeah, every time you reboot. Or you can just leave it there. I don't mind it as I am switching the power saver on and off quite often.
6: You double tap the home button.
Hope this helps!

OP, if it is hard at all to press the power button, return it or exchange it. My other Ones are SUPER easy to press. I have to get around to mailing this one in, but I'm not sure if I should because everything else about this phone is pretty much perfect.
And to see if your button lights are working, just cover the ambient light sensor with your finger. The one at the top left. Hold it for about 3 seconds. The lights should turn on. It think it's very smart that they only turn in when there is very little light.
I would have like a nav bar better though.
Okay so I'm exchanging the phone for the power button issue. Sad that the volume rocker issue will continue, but I can handle that one. The power button on mine is an absolute nightmare. I have to jam a fingernail in there to turn it on and half the time it doesn't work. Have to hit it just right.
The capacitive buttons do not light up in the light, dark, whenever. I cannot see the buttons and have to guess. Believe me, no one would love this feature. On my HTC EVO 4G LTE the lights came on. It gets annoying having to guess every time. I want the lights to come on.
My other big problem has nothing to do with google voice. I'll have full reception and not be able to make calls and text messages have to be resent. Seems like the phone is not working with the network correctly.
Yes the power saver notification is unacceptable. It is annoying to have a useless notification in the status bar. I'm not the only one it bothers and it needs to be removed permanently. Also I need Sprint ID to stop changing my custom screens. I would like my phone to work the way I want it to. I wanted an upgrade not a downgrade. When I get one with a working power button rooting should solve this, but if that wasn't an option I'd be shopping for another phone.
Figured out the double tap on home shortly after, but thanks. I still need to figure out how to stop Sprint ID from messing up my home screens. I tried disabling the icon pack for now.

That's sure not right. Hopefully your exchange doesn't do that, because mine lights up at all times of day.

Gone in 4.2, I believe. In the meantime though, you can long-press on the notification, head over to App info, and force stop the relevant app. Kills the thing quite nicely.

Can't really help you here. First thing I did when I got the phone was disable all of the bloatware (built-in Android disable function), although I later killed it off with Titanium Backup. Never had much an issue there though. Tried another launcher, maybe?

First a double negative is the only way this phrase works. Otherwise it's "I imagine having a case." which does not convey the point. Sure could go with "can't imagine leaving the phone unprotected" which is still a double negative without another "not" but that just seems nit-picky.
Also the first thing I do with phones when I get them is put a case on them. After many beautiful phones becoming banged up, scratched, ugly phones you learn that a case keeps them beautiful. The aluminum will scratch easily so putting a case on it is a good idea. There are clear cases so you can still see through. You could just be really careful and paranoid with it though it will probably get scratched anyway. It's up to you, but in no way is it odd or a contradiction to protect the appearance of a beautiful phone with a case.

Just poking, mate. :s
Anyway, OP, I hope you can resolve these issues. The bloatware can easily be removed via root. The Power saver notification is gone in the 4.2 update. (We'll get that soon, hopefully)
The texting thing is bizzare. I really don't know what that was.
Hello everyone,
After making do with my brothers hand-me-down iPhone 4 for far too long I have been searching for a new phone worth my money.
Had high hopes for the HTC M8 but the shocking camera let me down. iPhone 6 is probably the ugliest iPhone to date imo (just looks like the current iPod touch with some ugly lines on the back - Jobs would be turning in his grave!).
So, this takes me onto the Z3C... went to see the phone in person today and noticed in ALL the models on show throughout all the stores that the camera shutter button was very loose compared to all the other buttons. It also lacked sensitivity, requiring either long, or harder presses to launch the camera app from a locked screen.
Does nobody else have this issue?
Thanks

It's a 2 stage button
Half press to focus, press further to initiate second stage to take a picture.
To launch it from standby, it has nothing to do with how hard you press. You just have to hold it down for about a second. This is done purposely to minimize accidental presses while in your pocket/bag.
Hi all. I need your assistance with my HTC one M7. It is running andriod version 4.3, htc sense 5.5, software number 3.62.531.1, htc sdk api level 5.65.
The problem i have is that the section of the screen just below the small icons at the very top ( battery status , wifi, signal, etc..) does not appear to be working when the phone is vertical. I can pull down the menu and all other parts of the screen work ok. When i turn the phone horizontal all section of the screen works perfectly...even those that do not work when the phone is vertical. The only app that seems to work full vertical is the camera...i have access to all buttons.
In vertical position when i open any of my web browsers i am unable to type in the URL...when i hit that section of the screen nothing happens. If i turn the phone horizontal it works! This is basically happening to all my apps. That little section of screen just not working. I though the phone may have been physically damaged but the camera works ok....i am able to use all buttons in vertical position. I tried resetting the touch calibration that did not help.
Please let me know if you can help me with this.

dial *#*#3424#*#* and do the touch screen test (line drawing test) If you can see that a part of the screen isn't responsive then its a bad digitizer and will need to be replaced.
Hi. Thanks much for the tip. I did the test and that part of the screen did not work. I guess its a physical issue. Do you know if it can be fixed or is the phone gone for good? If it can be fixed does it make sense to try to fix it or just replace the phone? I appreciate your advice.

Best Buy was clearing out their M7 stock for $149 .. their all over ebay now under $200 ..that should be cheaper than a screen replacement unless you still have a warranty
