Hi all,
I've had my one since April on 3UK, it's completely stock. I'm fed up with waiting for 3 to push the 4.2.2 update, and want to get the OTA pushed to my device. How can I do this? I'm very confused with the whole rooting/unlocking etc.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

If you want the OTA, you'll have to wait for the OTA.
If you want 4.2.2, you need to unlock and flash a custom ROM.

I'm sure i'd seen a post about how to get the OTA...?
If I flash a custom ROM are there stock HTC ones available that would be the equivalent of the 4.2.2 OTA? (I'm thinking the answer is yes!)
Thanks

I assume you still have Hboot 1.44.000, so you can unlock and get S-Off with RevOne http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314582 and get the OTA by changing the CID number. It is not that hard and it is reversible because you can downgrade to 4.1.2 if needed. Change CID in cmd: fastboot oem writecid.
You don`t need root for this procedure.
Best is to flash a custom 4.2.2 rom
Don't try to force the OTA. It requires making deep changes to your system files and settings. Simplest thing to do if you just want 4.2.2 is to flash a stock rooted 4.2.2 rom.

Hello Guys,
I got my New Incredible S two days ago but I am unaware of the rooting/unlocking process.
Here are my questions:
1. I am now on Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 ROM. Is there anyway that I can root my device without having to unlock it.
2. If I do root the device then will I be able to unroot it and revert back to stock (Any risks)
3. If I choose to unlock the device, can I revert back and re-lock it.
4. What is the difference between S-ON and S-OFF (I dont understand the terms in the first place)
5. Difference between the rooting and unlocking process.
Please guys, i will be greatfull if any of you can help me out with my queries. I am new to HTC. I was previously using a Galaxy S and it was too simple for me to install custom roms. Came to HTC only for the Sense UI.
Thank you.

Welcome to HTC. I suggest you search and read the sticky posts in the forum. It will provide you with knowledge and answer your questions. On the HTC S-OFF provides you with a true unlocked system which makes it very easy to mod.
The official HTC unlock method does not really provide you with a flly unlocked system, so there are some mods that aren't as easy or impossible to perform.

Yes the Revolutionary S-OFF can be undone and reverted back to S-ON. Yes if you S-OFF and keep your stock ROM, then you should get the ICS OTA notification, but you will have to revert back to stock in order to apply it.

Sorry mate, that did not clear my mind. In simple words, If I choose to S-OFF and stay on the stock rom Gingerbread 2.3.5, will I be able to apply the official ICS update even though I have S-OFF with stock rom.

No the OTA update will fail because the S-OFF process write protects the bootloader and prevents anything from overwritng it to preserve S-OFF. The OTA will have a new version of the bootloader and since it will not be able to replace and update the S-OFF bootloader, you will end up with a phone that will not boot.

Thanks man. No more questions for now. I think I will wait for the Official update to arrive on my phone and then update to Custom roms if I dont find the OTA update interesting enough.
I want to update my HTC one to 4.2.2 but mine is the US variant (HTC_001 and not locked to any carrier) so I guess it will be a while before the update goes OTA??
Anywho, I understand that there is away to change the MID to get OTA from UK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322820)
But it says that I require "s-off".
Can you be kind enough to explain what it is and how I can get it?

S-off means security off.
There are certain partitions in the phone which contain the firmware, drivers, etc which are protected with s-on (security on). The reason for this is that if incorrect data is written to these areas your phone can become a permanent brick.
Obtaining s-off is a relatively easy process but can be risky if you don't know what you are doing.
My suggestion to you if you don't know what s-off is is to research and then some more and be familiar with the benefits vs risks.
In my signature below is a guide by vomer which provides details and links to the various processes you have to go through.

I looked into it, and the whole process is a very arduous task. You have to unlock the bootloader, then root it, then s off, then use that tutorial to change the MID.
I think there is too much risks given my knowledge of android hacking.
I guess ill just have to wait for OTA for the US variant.

Why wait for an ota update when you could just unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and install something like ARHD 12.0 which is rock stable and is way more faster than the stock rom.

Hmmm well I prefer the Stock 4.2.2 with sense 5. And since mine is USA variant so the only way to get it will be to change the MID. so thats unlock the bootloader, then root it, then s off, then use that tutorial to change the MID.

USA man, its always the last one that gets the updates. But thank god mine is not given to an carrier.
I am planning on unlocking and rooting my Canadian HTC One Silver on Rogers, right now actually, but I am just curious, 4.3 is supposed to be out for me sometime this weekend, maybe even tonight or tomorrow, so is it worth rooting atm or should I wait for 4.3 then wait for a root method or whatever I have to do, I am new to android and to rooting but I have been researching it for ages while I was stuck with BB7...
So, if this is not something to worry about or you think I should just go for it, is anyone willing to help me root over skype or TV or whatever, I am still confused and could use some... live help. I have a good mic and I am a good listener so it shouldn't be an issue.
Wait the Update and unlock the phone after
Because, if you want do the OTA after the unlocking, you have to revert back to lock and install it
I think is better do all after the OTA

Was wondering the same actually...
I have unlucked my One, flashed TWRP recovery, made a backup of the stock rom and flashed a custom rom.
If I'd want to get the official stock update (if I understand correctly that's the only way to also flash firmware if you are S-ON with hboot 1.54?) the process would be:
* Restore the stock rom backup
* Flash stock recovery
Am I missing something?

Hey guys, I just bought this phone yesterday from AT&T. Just out of the box I received an OTA update, which I thought was the KK update. But no, I am stuck on android 4.1.2 and Sense 5.0, and when I try to update, all I get is a message saying that everything is up to date and there are no updates available for me.
I am on the AT&T network at the time, and my phone is completely stock, no mod whatsoever. Any ideas what is going on????
You might want to exchange for a new unit or request for them to update, for all we know applying solutions suggested by us might just void the warranty instead.

use this RUU to get to 4.3 >> http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...13_10.38j.1157.04_release_334235_signed_2.exe
you need locked / relocked bootloader

+1 .. do it now!
Lets say I don't do S-Off (i don't really know what that is, my earlier phone was a crappy samsung) and I do the update with the RUU, will I be able to do S-Off later???
The thing is that i don't want to void the warranty. Coming from a really bad phone, where I had to mod EVERYTHING to get it working acceptably, I would really like to settle down and be stock for a while. Of course, that feeling will probably last a few months and then I will be flashing roms every 2 days lol.
If I flash the RUU manually, that doesn't void the warranty right? I mean, its an official firmware i suppose. On the other hand, if I can only do the S-Off thing right now, i might consider staying a while longer with 4.1.2 ... after all it is not so bad.

Mmm I think I'll start reading more before I make any decisions. Eventually I will root and install custom rims and kernels, so I'd like to keep my options open. If it's HARD but not impossible I might upgrade and stay stock.
Would you say there's a big difference between 4.1.2 / Sense 5.0 and 4.3 / Sense 5.5 ???
It's not that hard really.. i decided to s-off when im already running a KK rom. Firewater worked like a charm.

Gain S-Off now, and forever be happy. I never cared about OTA when I had that phone, I could run any RUU I wanted to, I changed from ATT to Dev, to GPE and back so many times. Just awesome.

As a general rule, you need stock recovery and stock rom to successfully execute the OTA update. So you will loose root but you should retain S-OFF.

As far as I know, the OTA 4.4.3 hasn't been sent out yet for the Sprint HTC One (M7). My understanding is it should be released any day now.
