Xperia Sola has a "glove mode". It lets you use the touch screen with regular gloves.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is the same kind of technology which allows the Xperia Z Ultra to register touches from anything.

I'm not saying anything, but from reading about the tech, it sounds a lot like something which could provide the kind of touch support the Xperia Z Ultra has.

The SP has an option, but I have no idea if it takes up any more power by being enabled.

I don't know about glove mode but my Xperia Z gets unlocked in my pocket, well I've tried with gloves and it doesn't work but it seems to work through some types of fabric like my pants pockets or a sweat shirt and it's really annoying as it takes pictures and videos inside my pocket...

The Z doesn't have this - But I'm gonna guess, glove mode saves battery, the screen can take any touches, but having glove mode disabled blocks non hand touches, so it frees up allowing everything to touch.
Why not test one day with, one day without. see how much screen on time you'll get. (Try to keep the tasks similar though)

[Q] what are the cons of Xperia Z?

I'm going to buy Xperia z in a few days - months, my question is: what have let you down in Xperia Z?
I already know about screen.
I kindly ask people which don't own this phone to not answer.
As I've seen many of the devs are going to buy or already have Xperia z, (im coming from Xperia Play and I've had great developers, most of them have moved to newer device, so I I'm going to do the same).
So to make it quick: what you don't like in your phone?

The phone is amazing I am happy with everything apart from the camera quality in low light situations, the camera is excellent in outdoor good light photos but poor in my opinion indoors. I would definitely recommend this phone hopefully a update might sort the camera out.
- the phone gets hot when you use it to much
- Screen on time is about 3.5-4.5h
- backside is glass
- the screen doesn't work when full of water
- It is big, sometimes doesn't reach the whole screen with the tumb without moving my hand position.
- camera doesn't always make good pictures.
But how hard you want to value which con is your opinion! IMHO i dislike the glass back... and i wish i had way better battery... but this are dreams.
Get it because it's an awesome phone. Ignore the claims that the screen isn't good. I mean, how retarded do you have to be to complain about the fact that the viewing angle is crap when you hold it at like 5 degree. The colours are way better than on Samsung Galaxy Phones.

I don't know, how many smartphones you had before, but I can assure you that it doesn't get hotter than the competition. Actually, a Galaxy S 2 gets hotter than the Xperia Z. And listing the glass-back as well as the size as a cons (or saying you dislike that) isn't really fair since those features were well known before you decided to buy it. And why would you like to use the screen under water?
In respect to the phone getting hot, I would say this is the same for most smartphones of this ilk. My Desire, Arc and XS, got very hot, but this is considered to be quite normal and nothing to worry about.
The XZ is a wonderful device. It's a noticeable upgrade from my XS and a fair bit bigger, but all in all no complaints.
The only negative points I can think of is that the camera ap starts up quite slow and that you can't change toggles in the notification bar by default.
Those are 2 things that should/could be solved really easy though.
Main things:
1) Camera app is sluggish, as already mentioned
2) Speaker on side - gets blocked by hand so you have to learn a new grip in order to not muffle your music/phone call
3) Power button on middle of right side - if you take a call when the phone's in a car dock doing satnav stuff, the phone (according to how it's set) can lock and turn the display off after the call so you have to try and press the button - which might mean taking the phone out of the dock while driving (or not!). I ended up installing an app that wakes up the phone when I wave near its proximity sensor.
noticed only this when shootin video in dark places and you turn on the light. the light is bad. miss has xperia t and light on her device is much more brighter. also in call volume isnt that great but im sure devs or sony will fix this up (lower volume because water proof cover). camera app is
indeed slow when u run it but i think its because its same app as it was on xperia x1 and didnt get much love
about camera learn basics bout takin pics and set camera to manual you will get great results
about speaker on side .. no problem for me cuz im left handed
about screen dont belive those reviews screen is really great and i mean great

I've went to the shop to check it out, most of these cons can be software-fixed.
But my biggest point in cons is
- speaker is crappy when playing music (no bass, I'm comming from xperia play which had 2 stereo speakers and they were great) not fixable
Viewing angles aren't that bad actually, it may be a little bit worse than top phones from other manufacturers but it's not that bad
I'd like to have an opinion from somebody about the battery...
Thanks to everyone for giving me some more advices for checking it out myself
The battery is amazing, playing game for 10 minutes, downloading apps and games from playstore, web browsing, and xda app.it last for 6 hours screen on time.could last for a day with 4 hours screen on.

So by saying it lasts 6 hours with screen on this means that it will go from 100% to 0% after 6 hours screen on, right? Well that's not a huge step but it's not bad, thanks

keep it away from water then. Simple. I personally don't trust the water resistance thing. No matter what, I would never wash my phone in a basin. One guy did the same and his Xperia Z went dead. So better be safe than sorry.

Water protection happens below the keys' level. So no worries, I'd say.

OptiContrast Panel? Z/ZL

Good evening,
This isn't really a huge deal but I do want to get to the bottom of this.
Does both Z and ZL have OptiContrast Panel? I've checked both white papers and theres only ONE line that mentions it:
The OptiContrast™ panel makes the phone seamlessly, strikingly black when turned off.
Click to collapse
like what is that even supposed to mean? I thought OptiContrast was supposed to be better? Explanation of OptiContrast Panel
anyway so I went to dig deeper. I've used to own 2 ZLs C6506 and 1 Z C6602, currently with C6603.
Both Zs (C6602/3) back of the box clearly states "OptiContrast Panel"
whereas,
if i do recall clearly, both ZLs (C6506) has nothing mentioned on the back of the box.
SSs below, the two without it are ZLs and the one with it is Z, as you can see the water drop picture on the side stating that its water resistant.
1) Does Z and ZL even have OptiContrast Panel? or does it mean something else for Xperia line?
2) Is OptiContrast Panel limited to only Sony TVs? or is Sony throwing us off, part of marketing scam?
Going by the description you posted for the term, I'm pretty sure it just refers to the bezel around the display.
On the Xperia Z regardless of colour choice, when the display is off the entire front glass is black.
On the Xperia ZL the bezel is the colour of the rest of the phone. So you don't get one black sheet of glass when off.
Just compare the white version of each and you will see what I mean.
Sent from my C6603 using xda premium
ahhh that would make a bit more sense, but its really a shame that they cant bring the tech to the phones. Sony couldve thought of a better name for this rather than using "OptiContrast" Panel -.-
all just seems like a marketing scam sigh

Xperia ZR announced

what do i really want to say is, do Sony such desperate to release new phones ? Sp and now ZR. I'm quite disappointed because ZR have dedicated shutter button and water resistance better than the Z.
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Really? Four phones in 5 months and you're complaining already?
The Z is the ultimate flagship. ZL is a regional alternative. SP is actually much cheaper and targeted at midrange. ZR is for people who want everything the Z has but at a smaller size.
The difference in water resistance between the Z and ZR isn't very big. Most people will also prefer the Z over the ZR in looks too.
If you're scared of updates, the ZR runs on the same hardware and software as the Z and ZL so no need to worry there.
Dont be surprised it's Sony. They release phones quite frequently for high end, Middle range and budget phones every year. And they have been doing this for a while.

I like that the xperia ZR is waterproof, not water resistance.

GSMarena claims it being IP58 with a shatterproof glass & Body and released with Android 4.2.
Basically a Quad-core Tank with 2gb ram and a 720p display.
And it's going to be released with 4.2
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_zr-5421.php
Say to least this is an interesting phone.
But i'd still choose Z over it, not only for the 1080p, but for the sleek design, I have never felt so comfortable holding a phone, especially this size.
Water resistance (IP57) is enough for daily use, the ZR is more for industrial use. I can see a lot of companies ordering this out. not so much for the rest.
No LTE? Shame

not sure if i should hate sony or love them lol
basically it looks like they listened to what people disliked about the Z, and fixed it
for example, glass back, dedicated camera key etc.
but it makes me regret getting my Z T.T
How much do u think will be the price guys?
New N!geR in towN;P
It's basically an Xperia Z with a 720p OptiContrast screen with an oleophobic coating, IP58 rather than IP57, 4.6" screen and quite a bit thicker. Good for those who want to bring this out to swim with and don't have very deep pockets
According to sonymoblie.com it runs 4.1.

Fixed.
I don't expect they'll release more close to high-end phone with better features off the flagship phone. Flagship phone should be the first priority to get the updates, get the best of everything. Of course, this is my opinion. Dedicated camera button? there's a mod in the Themes and Apps section of Z which allowed us to snap photo using volume key. IP58 water proof which allows the phone snap underwater photo & videos. Thus, what for they release a well called as flagship smartphone the Z? since there are better waterproof rating phone are releasing, with a dedicated camera buttons. If you guys still remember, Sony said that 4.2.2 update should be coming shortly after launch. Well, they really have their own way in defining "shortly" . I'm pretty satisfied with the design of my Z. I dropped my Z once on the rough floor. The edges on my phone which is light violet in colour get scratched really terribly. My bad for doesn't use a phone case for my phone. I like the design very much without cover or casing.
for conclusion, Sony should not releasing more phones that have better features than the flagship.

It might be IP58 but as some of the older more miserable members will tell you this doesn’t mean you should put it anywhere near water. These are the same members whose watches might be water resistance to 20M but they still take it off to go for shower.
LOL, Sony again, make a new phone. What about other phones that need some bug fixing? Why don't they use more time to try to fix bugs etc on previous release and make people happy. For me it sounds like Sony like our complaining and we have to wait for a new firmware/rom release while they are making a new phone, give people time to buy and be happy. What ever we are writing here, they don't care. Where is JB v.4.2.X they have promise? No they just put it on hold and wait for Xperia ZR release.
Xperia Z is a damn good phone, and why can't they use more time to make it perfect??

You do know Sony isn’t just one bloke in his shed, don’t you?!
There are whole sections of the company who design phones and get them built. Then there are who sections of the company the develop the software and firmware. So I disagree I don’t think Sony have forgotten us I think the 2 guys who work in the software department are just really really lazy, probably spend most of their day on this site.
So we’ll just have to wait as will the XZR owners!
So Sony does it again!! disappointed..! :banghead:

[Q] Without - Anti Shatter Film - display

Hi guys
Currently I'm using an s3 .. But am going to buy a new phone next month and I'm confused between Xperia Z and the Htc one
The only thing which I dont like about the Z is that when using the anti shatter film , the phone doesn't have good display from some angles ..
So I've searched alot to see if there is a difference in display after removing the anti shatter film .. But I found nothing
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance

I have still got mine on and sorry can you tell me what angle is meant to be bad because I can't find it (if you understand what I am saying)

" the phone doesn't have good display from some angles "
I think the Z's display is fantastic. The fact that the viewing angle is somewhat narrow has an upside in that ambient light seems to be blocked out more effectively.

not only that, but there are 2 things i don't understand with this "viewing angle craze":
1. what person uses their phone while looking at it from a narrow angle ?
i'd say that probably 99% of the time, everyone uses their phone looking more or less straight at the display.
2. when i look at the prices for extra foils that secure the device from people looking over your shoulder... i'd say we already have that feature for FREE !!! (you know, it's not a bug, it's a FEATURE ! ).
Also, from what i could see (and read) about FW .253 the "problem" seems to be mostly gone or can at least be minimized through the new display balance settings.
More importantly: as long as you don't have another phone to compare it with you, you most likely won't have as much of a problem with the display as everyone says.
At least i know that i don't have any problems with it, i actually love the display (but i had a Xperia Arc before, so the bigger, brighter screen with its hd resolution is rather impressive in comparrison :cyclops: )

i agree with you,, 99% smartphone users tend to view it straight on..(including me)
IMO for bad viewing angles as they say, well for me its a very good thing,, of course i dont want my seatmate or anyone reading what messages im reading on,, what if you have some transactions with and will probably they will knew about it cause of the better viewing angle.. privacy issues right..
when watching movies or photo viewing, ur not watching a movie tilted..always dead on..
and on topic with ASF,,,i suggest not to remove it.. protection for unwanted scratches yes, but the best thing to do put thin screen protctor on top ASF.. if it wont bother you..
