I've always liked the look of Moto sliders, ever since the original Milestone (Droid), but the encrypted bootloader turned me away from that phone. I've been with HTC devices ever since.
I've seen all the leaked Droid 4 photos and think it looks pretty damn sweet. Hopefully it'll get released in the UK as well (as the Milestone 4, I presume).
My question is: Can someone explain in simple terms if Moto is still encrypting bootloaders? If so, are there workarounds that give full access to flash different kernels etc now? This is still a dealbreaker issue for me. I need to know if I should quit wasting my time lusting after this device, and just wait for the next qwerty HTC to get announced.
Thanks!
Bootloaders are still locked, and Moto has not made any change to unlock them. As you can see HTC has decided to put out a tool, even with carrier objections. I really wish Moto would do the same thing!
Moto hates the dev community...
If you want to buy a moto device, buy it for what it is now, not for what it could be.
Moto promises to unlock bootloader on GB devices by Q3 2011. And they broke every promise, they only care about carriers.

Guess there's no Milestone 4 in my future then
I was aware Moto had made promises about unlocking bootloaders a long time ago, but I'm not at all surprised they've not followed through on it.
With these Droid/Milestone models they are only cutting their own throat though. Look at the dev support that the original Droid got, the G1, the G2/Desire Z.
The dev community LOVES a decent qwerty phone, and Moto could clean up with the specs that Droid 4 has. But no, they'd rather lock it down, and all that business will just go to HTC instead. Along with my recommendation to friends/family etc.
Yep, is all about qwerty. We are tied to moto
Anyone looking for a non qwerty phone, dont buy moto, there are better options. Maybe this way they weill learn
It's the opposite for me - I'm locked out of buying Moto phones, even though I won't consider anything BUT qwerty phones.
My Desire Z is looking a little long in the tooth now, and I'm desperate to replace it with something dual-core. But there just isn't anything in this country (UK). And now it looks like Moto is not interested in taking my money for the 4th time in a row :-/
So I have a sprint moto x, its white and I'm already sick of the color and look. Do you guys think there will be a way (unofficial, of course) to pick up parts and swap them myself. How hard is a teardown on one of these? I'd really like to replace the white back door with a wooden one at some point. Also, where is the development on this thing. I don't see any sign of CM which is crazy!!
Cm 10.2 is on its way,I downloaded a test cm ROM which is almost ready , if you go to the development section you'll find it
Sent on my Moto X
is there somewhere i can order a different back.
on sprint we have no motomaker but the back of the phone seems rather easy to pop on/off. I want to customize it myself but cant find parts anywhere online, other then one site has replacement white and black doors im looking for the navy or something.
EDIT: the name of this phone truly stinks!!! i keep searching for "moto x" stuff and keep getting super cross stuff, like, for motorcycles haha

Haha. I was having the same issue. Look up 'Motorola Moto X' instead. Should find some better results.
I am looking to get a no contract Moto X. They say the model is XT1053. I don't want the Dev version because I like the Moto software that comes on the no Dev version. Is the Dev version just pure Android?
I am coming from the AT&T Galaxy S4 not rooted but sim unlocked.
I know the Moto X is a nice phone but almost having a hard time to commit to the purchase. I will be selling the Galaxy S4 to recoup the money but what would you do?

Dev version and regular version are identical. The only difference is you don't lose your warranty when you unlock.
The Moto X is the best phone I've ever used, bar none. If you have read reviews and think you'll like it, buy it.

So the Dev version has the Moto Active display notifications? So it would be worth going that route well it is 324 too. Just dont know if I like the black front and white back.

Yes. The Dev version and regular version are identical hardware and software.

If you aren't interested in Unlocking the bootloader, I'd say get the moto maker version. Its a fantastic phone and you'll no doubt enjoy it regardless of which one you buy.

The Dev Edition XT1053, and the GSM Unlocked (comes with T-Mobile SIM) XT1053 and GSM Unlocked (comes with Net10 Sim) XT1053 use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The GSM Unlocked (with T-Mo or Net10 sim) is basically the same, except available as 16, 32 or 64gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking its bootloader DOES void the warranty.
So if having the warranty is more important than looks, go with the Dev Edition and put a case on it. If looks or 64gig are more important than warranty, go Moto Maker.
I have a VZW developer edition. I purchased a black back cover for it. The covers are pretty easy to replace.
I wanted an unlocked bootloader so I would have the option of flashing mods or ROMs in the future. So far I'm satisfied with the stock software, but there may be a point in time I want something different.

Do you still have the white back?
Yep. Keeping it in case I decide to sell or change my mind down the road.

Well if you decide to sell, let me know. I don't have a verizon moto x, but I like the woven white back better.
TY all for the help I will get the Moto Maker no contract one as the woven black is showing available again.

Nice. Where'd you get a black back plate? I'd like to change that also. Love having dev edition. Got it the day it launched but not a fan of the white back.
There is a thread somewhere in this forum with links to purchase replacement back plates. I think mine came from china.
Well I pulled the trigger on the Developer edition. I know the new ones are just around the corner but couldn't pass up the deal they have now.
I am coming from the AT&T Galaxy S4. Has been a nice phone but to bloated and locked down.
Can't wait.

Woo hoo! Welcome to the club! Let us know if you have any questions.
I say no. The screen brightness/color accuracy is not good.

Nobody in this forum seems to have experienced what you did tho.
Doesn't mean all moto x's have that issue. Mine sure doesn't. ?

I ended up with a "best example" of any X. The screen just not up to other phones for outdoor readability!
With no contract and being able to customize the look to meet your color needs, notifications and touch less control, Motorola Assist how can you not get one.
$299.99 for 16GB
$324.99 for 32GB
These people that ***** about this and that spend endless time complaining about everything!
No phone is perfect but its a good phone had it since roll out.

I am not a fan of X's display coming from an S4, but which AMOLED panel has good colour accuracy? They all are extremely over saturated, S4 was, S5 is (a completely different story with Cinema preset though), and X is too. Yes I will agree that it's more saturated than S4's display, but still it's not that bad that I will have to complain about it. It's basically the same display which was used in Note 2 right?
Recently i am seeing a small difference on the back on my Moto x 2014.... Phone is about 7 months old.
a very minor swelling/bulge of a sort and no i don't overcharge my phone.. ever...
So i was planning on going to the service center in my city. [Pune, India] [ Anyone in India with similar experience would be a plus ]
Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing
and
if or what solutions do the Motorola people offer if it is an actual issue [hopefully not my minor OCD]
Any help would b appreciated. :good:
Just in case anyone is following this thread.
Update: I got it checked at an Authorised Service Centre here. Yes it has a bulge which was fairly noticeable if ur looking for it. Apparently the moto guy said, all X Series i.e. meaning moto x 1st gen and 2nd gen have the back cover stuck and not a latched type back panel like Moto G, E , etc...
They will pry it open which will certainly cause a bit of damage and check the battery, also replace it if necessary. Also the motherboard will be checked apparently. Free of cost as its under moto warranty, obviously.
Reasons mentioned to me by Moto: Overheating, although I never overcharge it. So I'm clueless as to how...
I'll keep the thread updated on the issue, my device will be given to them on Monday/Tuesday for diagnostics.
Hoping for the best here

A small quick update on the matter
The moto service centre has ordered "parts" and "will take time to come"
so i have not given my moto yet but will be taking it for diagnostics tomorrow to figure out whats the deal... with this bulge... :crying:
The Issue here is.... in India... the whole damn system is SLOW
sigh...
more updates to come tomorrow itself...
Well this is the final update:
I got it checked, saw with my own eyes the insides of my moto X 2014, a fine work of craftsmanship n design by moto on the inside too...
Anyway, the battery has not bulged...
The bulge present resulted only because moto X has the back panel stuck and not like a latch system like moto g or most mobiles for that matter.
So yes, to sum up, it was my paranoia
But at least now I know and if Anyone is interested or having any similar issue, u also know now
Have a good day XDA

So I joined the I cracked my phone club today. I dropped my moto x and it cracked at the top left, I'm not stupid, I was just suffering from a migraine when it happened (and anybody who's had a migraine feels my pain). Regardless of my body punishing me, I was looking to get my phone repaired. So I looked up how much it would cost and I saw a $145 price tag. I was planning on buying the moto x pure anyway, when the moto z came out, so I want to know what you guys think. Do you think I should get the phone repaired or by the moto x pure. I assume the moto x pure's price will drop when the moto z comes out, do you guys agree with me?
Thanks in advance,
Matt
P. S.
I'm sorry if my grammar was a little off, I have trouble communicating when I get migraines.
