Best 3rd party warranty or insurance? - Moto X Q&A

Since I plan to unlock the bootloader on my Sprint Moto X which would void the manufacturer's warranty, I was considering buying one from a 3rd party vendor. Any recommendations?
Has anyone heard of or had any experience with Securranty? They seem to have the best coverage along with the best price but I had never heard of them before.

Hi all,
I've been looking through previous posts on XDA regarding the same topic, but I didn't seem to find anything helpful. I'm just curious if people have had any success registering their Moto X, specifically the developer edition, with some third party warranty provider. I finally saved enough money to order one and plan on doing so today, my only concern is getting a warranty that will actually replace a developer edition with a developer edition model instead of wasting $650 for almost nothing. I know it sounds stupid, but I wouldn't put it past a warranty provider to replace a dev edition with a regular model similar to one you get pick up at a Verizon store. Any insight is welcomed and thank you in advance!

I am getting ready to order a couple of X's for my wife and me. I have a couple of questions....
We are with at&t. Is there a difference between the at&t branded ones and the GSM dev models? I have Googled this, but I am still confused as to whether there are hardware differences which would make the dev model less useful on at&t and whether there is bloat on the at&t model....
We have a SG4 and an iPhone 5 which still under contract which we will keep as spares for the family. I assume that we can buy the X at&t branded through Moto Maker without a contract? and just stay on the plan?

the developer edition are unlocked and u can unlock ur bootloader without losing ur warranty
being unlocked u can use with other carriers
if u buy at&t u can use only with at&t
if u want a phone that u can use with gsm carriers and with other carriers take or a developer edition or a unlockable one without contract
I got the T-Mobile unlockable (and unbranded!) version from Motomaker off-contract. Works great on AT&T and it beat paying the extra dough for a developer edition, since it's practically the same damn thing! (I also don't care about voiding warranty having unlocked my bootloader. I take care of my phone. If warranty is something you desire, then go dev edition or stick with your current carrier's version).

I'm pretty sure the developer edition is the same price as the moto maker version so it won't cost any "extra dough." And it doesn't matter how well you care for your phone. That's not what a warranty is for. It covers failures NOT caused by the user. You could wrap your phone in bubble wrap, never flash a third party app, and only use it under tightly controlled environmental conditions, insuring the phone is never exposed to any abuse, and a part could still fail, thus necessitating the use of the warranty. Which you voided by unlocking the boot loader on a non-developer edition.
You can pick either the AT&T branded one, the T-Mobile variant, or the unlocked. The T-mobile is actually unbranded, SIM unlocked and has no carrier apps.
I'm in the same boat still in contract with AT&T and purchased the T-Mobile one to leave my options open to switch to T-Mobile later and be able to purchase SIM cards for use abroad without having to fight the death star to get an unlock code.

If I could've bought the developer version easily I certainly would have.
But to me...I'll risk the 400 bucks to unlock..root..etc. I have on every device I've owned. LOL. I need my customization, battery life control..etc etc.

Buy the unlocked one. Works just fine with att. I'm in the middle of my contract and just had to go to a store and pick up a new sim

I have the Pure Edition running on T Mobile and I bought this phone with the plan to unlock/root. After talking with Moto support I was surprised to hear that simply requesting a code not only voids your warranty (which I expected) but they won't even service it for a fee. In addition they told me it would completely nullify your extended Moto warranty if you bought one.
Is this really true?? I want to unlock but it scares me to know that even physical warranty problems such as a peeling wood veneer would no longer be covered.
I've seen mixed reports but it's really ****ty of moto to not honor a warranty for the PE when it's effectively the DE this year. I bought myself a Nexus for this reason but my wife has the PE. I don't want to unlock her phone just in case she has an issue.

To clarify, I was referring to Moto Care when I mentioned the extended warranty. Motorola straight up told me they would void your Moto Care if you request an unlock code. Seriously, what a joke. Has anyone else been told differently?

I was told twice that the PE was being treated as a DE this year and unlocking would have no effect on warranty. I exchanged my original PE for one with a leather back, and it was unlocked. I had no issues exchanging it. Same goes for my buddy. I know a few people have been told that it doesn't void the warranty. Maybe the rep you spoke with was misinformed? I'd call back and ask again.

Okay, so I online chatted with another rep and she told me the regular warranty would be void but the extended warranty would be honored. But it if you had good luck using the standard warranty with an unlocked bootloader then that's awesome!

So, I spoke to a 4th rep and he said that standard warranty is still valid for the Pure Edition. My guess is that they made a recent change to their policy regarding unlocking the bootloader and a lot of their reps are not informed yet.
This is not a recent change. Official word came out in September that the Pure Edition is their Dev Edition this year. Unlocking other variants will void the warranty. Not the case with the PE.

That is my fault for not reviewing these forums. The sad reality is that the Motorola tech support must not have been aware of the change either. If you're interested I can paste my conversations from December with them telling me that all warranties are void after unlocking. Water over the bridge at this point, I suppose.
Just stinks that they aren't on the same page with each other (within the company). And it certainly doesn't make things easier that they changed the name of the developer edition to "pure". Hope they sort things out.
My own personal experience with support earlier this week was that they acknowledged I'd unlocked the phone, but that's it. Simply, "I see you requested the unlock code". I said I had and the rep moved on to process the exchange. Easy.

Moto X warranty

I bought a used at&t moto x 2014 from eBay. It didn't come with the original box, paperwork, and accessories. The ESN is clean and I was able to unlock it buying an unlock code. I checked the moto x website and registered the device on their website. I noticed that it has a 1 year warranty and will expire on December 2015. My question is, if anything happens to my phone (drop, hardware or software issue) in the future. Will I be able to get it repaired or get a replacement? I live on Guam, which is a US territory.

Probably not. As far as I know, Motorola's warranty is nontransferable. Apple is one of the only electronic manufacturers who's warranty follows the device and not the owner. You'll likely have to pay for any repairs.
Edit: Just checked, one of the first lines in the warranty policy states that it extends only to the first consumer purchaser of the device and is nontransferable. So you're not covered and will be responsible for all repair costs.

No one can get a warranty replacement at a Verizon store. If you go to a Verizon store, they will tell you to go home, go to this website, and file your claim there: http://www.phoneclaim.com/verizon/?pod=claim&icid=in-vzwclaim&tntref=https://www.bing.com/.
Now, the question is should you do this, and the answer depends on why you are getting a warranty replacement. If there is no physical/water damage, and the phone is less than 1 year old, you're better off getting a free replacement from Motorola here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/service/. I got a motorola replacement with a rooted phone, and there were no issues.
However, if your phone does not meet these requirements, you will need to go the Verizon route. While unlocking your bootloader technically voids your warranty, I've heard from a few people that it's not really enforced, and they'll replace your phone anyway.
