edit: Got it figured out, apparently even though my new phone had wifi, I had to have it activated to verizon before it would work

I recently bought an unlocked HTC One directly from HTC to use on the Tmobile network. I assumed I would be able to use potable wifi hotspot to tether the Internet to my ipad when needed. It does not seem to be working though. I was able to get the iPad to connect once but when trying to go to a website, it took me to a tmobile page that said I don't have a paid plan with tmobile. Now it won't even connect to it at all. Any idea why? Are there any setting changes that can fix this?
I was able to use the tethering option on my Nexus 4 with no problems at all. I was hoping since I bought the htc one unlocked and NOT from tmobile, there wouldn't be any restrictions...
so i came from my GNEX and needed to cut the SIM from micro to nano. came out damn near perfect. put the cut SIm in my moto x and it worked. 4G comes on and all is well for about a minute or i use my data in anyways. it will instantly drop down to 3G. Verizon did the whole "Restart and factory reset" BS and nothing helped. they tried a new sim and it wouldnt accept it.... what do i do
so now that you have a new SIM card. the phone wont read it at all so you have no data what so ever?

I don't know much to help, but I noticed on my new Vzw Moto X that right after activation, my 4G light was on. I continued the setup and 4G turned off almost immediately. That was odd, but I was activating at home. I need to port in a number and visit a store, so I thought I would ask at that point. I was at home with WiFi. Anyway - I noticed that when WiFi is off, 4G is on. As soon as I turn on WiFi or connect to a WiFi access point, that 4G turns off. Could this be it?

i have data and everything is working fine, but its only 3g. ive tried a new sim, hard reset, changing my data from global to 3g/4g adn all i can get its 3g.... i mean it works but jsut annoying
have you done any major changes to the phone recently?
if you haven't done any changes then sounds like there end not yours. only thing left you could try would be to use one of the restore to stock zips and try flashing it and see if that fixes it.that file contains all the modem's and so forth.
also like the other guy said are you connected to wifi and are you even sure you get 4G at your current location. i would restore my device to stock with the correct zip and see if that fixes it.
Wrong post
I'm going to just try Verizon again and if they can't fix it demand a replacement... Why have a 4g phone when it's not using It
so after 2 new SIMS and 4 factory restarts, the VZW rep fixed what was wrong. now, time to see how long my battery life is with 4G on!

I have noted the same thing, and was curious.
Per VZW customer support today, that is normal operation.
The reasoning is as I expected:
Once you have a wifi connection (not just the wifi radio turned on), that connection will be responsible for data communications. The data capability of 4G is redundant, and the phone drops back to 3G operation to support phone only operations (voice, sms, e911, etc).
As I understand it, this should reduce both your battery usage, and of course VZW's tower's data load.
I've searched here in XDA and the web, can't find anything regarding this:
My friend has the XT1053 GSM moto maker using AT&T. He hasn't unlocked or rooted, running stock 4.4.2
Seems when he has wifi on, even though he's not connected to anything, his calls get very garbled, mostly he experiences it when he's driving, as that's when he makes calls on it mostly, and because of that it's difficult for him to check his signal strength in the status bar at that moment. I hadn't heard of wifi simply being enabled causing an issue like that, but seems greatly improved when he has it off. I told him he shouldn't have to toggle off wifi to make a call, maybe he should get it replaced under warranty (or at least call Moto tech support to see if there's some trouble shooting, though I wonder if they'll be of help)
Wondering if anyone has heard of this happening on that model (or any phone, for that matter) I have the XT1058 unlocked, rooted, 4.4.2, Xposed, etc., with no issues. He hasn't tried it with data on, as his data plan is limited, so he just turns on data to check email, then turns it off.
Thanks

That's very interesting....I have garbled voice when my moto x is connected to my car on bluetooth and I almost always have wifi on. I am going to try that with wifi off to see if maybe you are on to something here.

Will be interested to know
wondering if you tried toggling off wifi to see if call quality improved?
I told my friend we should definitely call tech support, maybe there is a "fix" of some kind, it definitely is much worse with wifi on, call is very garbled, as soon as he switches it off, it's fine.
I recently purchased a Moto X Pure Edition and am trying to use my old gophone sim (previously in a feature flip-phone) in it. I have tested and confirmed that it works correctly on T-mobile, however when I put my gophone sim in it, it shows service for 30-60 seconds and then goes to "No Service" which I know is not true. It is also worth noting that I can't turn on cellular data. As soon as I do it turns itself off.
Other things that might be relevant:
My gophone plan is the 10c/min, no data plan.
This was originally a full size sim which I cut down to nano size. I have put it back in my old feature phone with an adapter and confirmed that it still works.
I have tried a dozen different APN settings, including copying the APN settings from a friend's Moto G that has the same plan, with the same result.
For the short period that I do have service, it usually works correctly. I still can't turn on mobile data, but I can make and receive calls as well as send and receive non-MMS text messages (MSS requires mobile data). Sometimes attempting to text/call seems to trigger me losing service, but that might be a coincidence.
I'm currently on rooted stock 5.0 lollipop with an unlocked bootloader.
Any ideas how can fix this?
I am going to try using my friends gophone sim and see if that works. I will update with the results of that.
Att contracts require data plan for smartphones. Maybe related. Call them and ask.
As I mentioned, my friend has a Moto G with the same plan. I did call and they suggested I get a new SIM. I'm going to do that, but I'm doubtful of the result
The other day I switched over to Straight Talk. I used stump root shortly after so I could use the hotspot fix to use wifi tethering. I never got it to work but was a to some 3g tethering with barnacle. My phone stopped getting 4g though and even when I put my Verizon Sim in it I get nothing but 3g. I've changed the network setting from global to lte/CDMA but nothing works. Do I need to factory reset? Very new to rooting.
