[Discussion] Direct Bluetooth Connection in Autoremote - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Looks like the latest update for autoremote allows direct communication over bluetooth! This should be very useful to Galaxy Gear users!
I'm still tinkering with it, and haven't successfully sent a command. Just wanted to know how it was going for you guys!

I'm not able to get this feature working at all. I even tried sending a command to my Note 3 from my GNex. Unless the GNex was connected to the internet, no command was sent. I'm kind of relieved it is not a compatability issue with gear, but I have no idea what's going wrong! Any feedback from the community would be great! Has anyone been successful?

I haven't got to tell you how much I appreciate what you have done for Gear owners.. Before Null, I was close to feeling buyers remorse. Now I love this little beast! Thank you so much!
I'm going to hit the sack.. Will see what I can do tomorrow and will definitely update everyone.

Just finished setting it up, works perfect !
Tasker integration on the gear is a go !
Some tips:
1. You need to active the bluetooth message listener using a tasker action, I personally have set up the listener to be activate if my gear is connected via bluetooth & deactivated if its not.
*NOTE* Its the only way to activate it.
2. The service must be enabled on both devices, I believe... ALTHOUGH ! someone please try only activating it on your phone tho to see if this is correct.. Im just speculating.

And to answer YOUR question, I have the listener activated on the phone only and it works from that direction: watch > phone.

Wanted to let you guys know that tasker app factory works.
This is very useful for things like starting autovoice from the stock launcher, or sending a button press event to the phone's tasker.
With this, autovoice, autoremote, and null rom, my tasker needs are complete!
I just need to find the correct size icon, because my icon doesn't look good (too small)

Proof of concept more than anything. Wanted to see if it could be done. There are times when I may not want to talk. Might want to trigger an event silently.

Is there a way to set your watch to tether to your note 3, when the note 3 flips to 4g?
Here is my problem. When home I use wifi all the time, which prevents you from ticking Bluetooth tether on your phone.
So I set up a tasker task to turn on Bluetooth tether when I leave the house, because I go to 4g.
Now what I would like to do is set up a task on my gear to automatically connect to the note?
Is there anyway to do this?

Dont, Its a bad idea.. will drain your battery.
What I have setup is a gesture on novalauncher to activate tethering and a timeout function when the screen is off for 30 seconds.
30 seconds screen off time = tethering disabled.
Setup using tasker.

That requires internet connection, which is not supported by the GEAR.
I agree that it would be better, though!
true but there has to be a way to bluetooth tether and use the phones connection...

Actually it doesnt require an internet connection. Google now supports bluetooth audio inout iirc, so the option is to send audio to device, do processing on the phone and route it back to the gear display / speakers.

Google now is good but s voice is more of an assitant
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Id agree. SVoice does just fine on the watch my issue is Google nows Voice actions dont need confirmation. Text Bob "lets eat pizza" results in Google now showing you the name and message and a little timer that lets you press enter right away...edit..if time elapses it sends. So your only input can be one sentence.
With SVoice it requires a confirmation so you have to wait for that extra load time just to say "yes".
Google does the translations offline if needed. SVoice still requires a connection.
IMO its really not hard to have SVoice function ideally for the watch. Just needs some tweaking.

Web Browsing on unrooted Gear

Hey, haven't seen this mentioned yet, but ScreenShare works for our phones and gear so we can have a full Web browser on our watches.
Here is what I did.
Installed ScreenShare on my Note 3.(No need for pro)
Used Wondershare MobileGo to install the -tablet- version of ScreenShare on the Gear.
Launch them both and change the connection type to Bluetooth.
If you are already paired between you phone and watch then they will appear under Paired devices and you just need to select the phone from the Gear.
If you are not paired, say you don't have a Note 3, there is a Setup Wizard option built in which will find your devices and set it all up for you.
After all the connections are done, just run the browser and it will open on both your phone and Gear, but from here on you don't even need the phone screen on and it won't sync screens until you press a designated button to do so.
Sometimes, it will mess up using the browser button saying you have no service, to get around this (every time in my testing) use the Help button, then go to the FAQs. The browser will open to the apps website FAQs and from there you can go to any site you want like normal.
The app also sync all your documents, music, videos, and pictures for use on the Gear as well. Fun stuff.
Hope this helps everyone who has been looking for a way to surf the Web via Gear.
nice find! works flawlessly, except that we could have a bigger working space.
the address bar should automatically hide, and the navigation buttons should be toggled by a gesture.
other than that, EAT THIS SAMSUNG! it's possible to web browse, and we want it!

Awesome, glad it worked for you too! I am planning to let the app creators know that this works for the Gear as well in hope that they might add gestures and the hide address bar as you said.
If not, maybe someone more skilled then myself can make something similar based off this.

Cool. What is this doing to your battery life. Was planning something but figured that it might drain the battery as hell.
Haven't noticed anything that drastically different. Other than the fact I am using more screen on time.
The Bluetooth connection is all shared so it's just the same as having it paired in the first place.
I got a full day use out of it, with
ATN, Tablet Talk, and ScreenShare all on.
Did quite a bit of Web Browsing trying stuff out. I also had several calls and maybe... 100ish texts if I had to guess.
I'll try tomorrow just having it on but not actually browsing to see if I notice a change.

Nope, phones screen will be off. But you can press that button in the middle, the up arrow one, and it will send the Gears screen to the phone and turn it on to view there.

You will need to sideload it through ADB or Wondershare. There is some guides on the forums but I will try to summarize.
Download wondershare on PC.
Install and connect to the Gear via USB. Then using Wondershares browser, search for and install ScreenShare tablet. It will download and install right to the Gear and then you are done.
You also will need a keyboard app. I use Hackers Keyboard, but I've heard people who had success with Google Keyboard.
Search and install either the same way as above then restart the Gear. This is important, the keyboard will not work until you fully restart the Gear.
Good luck! I will try to respond better soon as I get home.

Little unfortunate thing I just noticed, we can only have three Bluetooth connections including the Gear Manager itself. (So two third party) these include stuff like Ebay, Evernote, ATN, Tablet Talk, and ScreenShare.
So if these do not work for you, try turning one of those off. Hope a firmware update might increase this limit.
Battery life has hasn't been any worse than a normal days use for me today. I do not think it effects battery any more than Screen on and Bluetooth on does in the first place.

For anyone who doesn't want to or can't use wondeshare you can just download .apk extractor from the play store and extract it from the tablet version downloaded to your phone. I've been using this as the easiest way to get .apk files for my gear. There's an in app export that I just email myself the app's apk.

I just want to say thanks! I've been waiting on sinew type of Internet connection. I feel like my wants and needs are complete now with the watch. Between ATN, Screensaver, and my other customizations, I'm extremely happy.
One question though, has anyone had any luck with getting any video to play using this, like YouTube from the browser? Or any other Web video. As this would surly be the icing on the cake!

It's not easy to text more than a couple words since the keyboard covers the screen. You can still text on your phone.

You must have tablet talk installed on both devices so that they are able to communicate with each other via bluetooth.
How to install:
- Download/purchase the app on your phone
- Copy the .apk file from /data/app on your phone to your gear (via bluetooth or computer transfer)
- install the app on your gear
- [IMPORTANT] Set up your gear as a phone and phone as a tablet. This makes the two pair properly. Otherwise you can't pair them due to the tiny gear screen
- In settings, switch the phone to phone and the gear to tablet.
- Install a keyboard if you don't already have one.
- Note - you must be bluetooth tethered from your phone to receive internet connection for this to work
- Enjoy
After about 3 days of trial and error, this is the only way I could find to set the 2 up properly. I hope this helps others.

It seems texting directly from the Gear is something to be used sparingly. On a normal work day (w/o TT) I would come home and the Gear would be at 81%. My first day of using TT and texting from my Gear exclusively, I hit 50% in 4 hours.

that was my next question..

You should have the profile enabled.
Im on sprint and thats a native option on my phone to tether. Now on Gear, i alway had that option even from early version of Null.

you say from your gear you had the option to enable the internet even before you turn your bt on? i might have to reinstall the null or maybe find a different rooted rom for my phone?
The option has been enabled from all null as well. Unless like he said.. The profile from the phone wouldn't support this option.
Come to think of it.. Might be the way ur profile on ur phone gets set with gear.

That means your phone does not support it fully. So you have 2 options.
Option 1) use 3rd party options like PdaNet+
Option 2) find a rom for your phone that supports it correctly.
See my tutorial for in for on 3rd party option. And yes it does work for Google play. But must be using null_17 and enable Network Spoofer

On the gear, enable network spoofer WIFI. IF you need for info check out this thread. (Includes Screenshots)
I've decided to include PdaNet with the next version of null, iv also optimized it for the gear display to fit nice.
Stay tuned for build 18 release.

Smart Select has been Downgraded.

With the Note 4, you could use Smart Select and select text on the screen. It gave you the option to extract that text to use some where else. If it was an address, it gave you the option to get directions to that address. If it was a number, gave you the option to call it. Now you can only save it to the gallery, scrapbook or share it as a picture.
Ahhhh! Just got my Note 5 and this is driving me bananas. Anyone come up work a remedy? I really miss this from the note 4 as this was my primary s pen usage.
Infact you can still do it but you have to select it when you single line cursor. I havent understood how to get it all the time. Something with button and distance from screen. If you get square cursor with + then you only get as image. If you get a dot then single I shape curson then you can select as text

I'm sorry, Netuser could you explain a little further? I've communicated with Samsung and they've stated the feature has been removed. Just so you're clear on what's being described, on the Note 4 if you "smart selected" an image with an address in it, a "T" would appear in the upper right corner. Clicking on that "T" would give you the option to copy the address text, look at the address on Google Maps (or your favorite map/navigation app) and share the info with others. If we're talking about the same thing, could you explain your process again? Thanks.
Just keep pressing the button on the spen and drag along the text to select the text. .then you get your options

Thanks for the reply, but again, I don't think you understand the feature I'm referencing from the Note 4. Also, the feature I'm referencing was confirmed by Samsung to not be in the Note 5.
The feature doesn't deal with the copying of text. It deals with extracting text from an image that is captured using the "smart select" function. Depending on the text that was in the image, it could be copied, automatically converted to a calendar entry or even converted into an address in Google Maps.
I'm 100% confident the feature isn't in the Note 5. I'm more so curious as to whether a comparable 3rd party solution was available (not Samsung's OCR app mentioned in other boards) or a way to "port" that feature into the Note 5.

Why would you capture it as image and then extrat text while now you can select and copy the text. Or maybe you are talking about extracting text from any image. I never had note 4 so i dont really know what was that .

He is talking about Extracting Text from image (as mentioned here https://youtu.be/mgcDxDwwL_c?t=1m43s [Pause Video at 1:47 and you will see the "T"].)
This was a very important feature that I used often on the Note 4, I'm pretty ticked off/unhappy that it's been removed.
It comes in handy when you sent a PDF that can't be edit, nor holding the S-Button down does not allow text selection.
There are other used for it, but each may have their own "use case."
(This and the Collections in Scrapbook are not missing, 2 features I became attached to on Note 4. Collections are still there, sorta, just not as easy to access or create as it was before by simply taping the collect icon when using Smart Select.)

Any idea how to replicate? I used this app below bit obviously note of a pain.

It says item not found.
I was able to get the T to appear in copying Instagram text just now. I need the ability in the Facebook app because I run several large business groups where we cross post from one to another. It was working yesterday, as you see. But today I can't get it to work.

I just realized it was working inside the Tapatalk app. I thought I was I'm Facebook... Duh. So it must be a Facebook limitation.

UPDATE: seems to be working for me. Running Skywalker ROM
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Samsung actually brought it back in the last firmware update. It's not exactly the same as the Note 4's implementation but at least it's a start! Maybe they'll bring back full functionality in the Marshmallow update?
Maybe someone with marshmallow can chime in
