[Q] Moto X (sale) vs Nexus 5? - Moto X Q&A

I was pretty well set on the Nexus 5 for price reason, unlocked for T-Mobile. But with the sale, I grabbed one of the codes for the Moto X while I try to figure out which I'd like to upgrade to. Since I could currently get the Moto X cheaper that selling point on the Nexus is gone.
If you had to choose today, at the sale prices which do you think you'd choose and why?

Damn im in the same boat and im going to T mobile too ! Im really deciding on the nexus 5 or moto x .. and with these price drops its making me lend to the motox .
I LOVE how the motox features are they just seem really cool and the design is damn nice unlike my nexus 4 was kinda blah.
But i been looking around and there doesnt seem to very much people doing Rom development at all so im broken on that .
And im not sure how long would it take for the moto x to get updated to the newest version of android in the future and if they will just drop everything when a new motox is out and it would take us longer to get updates .
Also future based who knows what new things will come out and if the nexus would get some of the features the motox has.. hmm..
.. so im pretty at a stand still with picking which one. and if i picked the nexus i would feel like i would miss those cool features :crying:
lol decisions..

4.4.2 is soon available for the X. So expect that to come soon as Motorola seem to be shipping updates quicker than any other company out.
ROM development is low because the phone is basically vanilla Android.
Doubt anyone will get the Moto X features. Though it will be replicated, it won't be done the same as in terms of battery management and core processing.
Possibly after the Moto X stops receiving updates, we may have more than a handful of devs jumping on board.

yeah everyone seems to love the active notifications and touchless control. I'm also not sure how much the extra cores will even matter on the Nexus 5. Most pc applications still aren't properly written to take full advantage of my 4 core computer processors.

I decided on the Moto X with the Nexus 5 being a close runner up. My decision was based primary on the Active Notifications, MotoMaker, and (currently) fast updates. Motorola, being owned by Google, should be getting update for some time, but I make no promises.

If you want to be able to use your device and have your battery last throughout the day, Moto X. If you want vanilla AOSP without the Moto additions (not sure why you would), buy a developer edition.

damn and now Motorola has been bought out . Hmm Are you still going to buy the motox Quikster?

Well I was in the same boat as you. I went for the Moto X because I wanted a phone that, like the iPhone, seems to have been developed around the custom cpu. The only other phone I have ever had that I miss was the Galaxy S2 with the Exynos cpu. So from my view, building a phone around a custom cpu setup should provide better overall experience. That's what I saw when I played with the demo units. I hate seeing lag on my Galaxy S4, especially since it's it's a Snapdragon 600. Plus plain Android just seems better. Forget the fancy overlays.

I don't even own a Moto X (Galaxy S4), but I'm going to straight up tell you to buy the Moto X. Why?
- Active Notifications (actually useful; I use an app on my Galaxy S4 that is basically a clone)
- MotoMaker/Developer Edition (one or the other, not both)
- Neither have a removable battery or expandable storage, but I know from a lot of people and reviews that the Moto X FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR outlasts the Nexus 5. Yes, the Nexus 5 has the better specs on paper, but the Moto X is far more efficient and performs much better in day to day tasks than top tier devices (Galaxy S4, Note 3, etc).
- Quick updates; the Moto X got Android 4.4 right after the Nexus 5 and before the Nexus 4.

This wont' affect me one way or the other. I don't see anything really changing near term, and they've actually grown the laptop business they bought from IBM several years back, and they just bought the low end server business from IBM as well.

imma try out motox and see how it is i cant just write it off since im really curious how it works and runs. If its not for me ill just return it and just go for the nexus 5 =]

I've had both. Returned the N5 straight away. Bad feel in the had, terrible battery (with my usage pattern). Have been rocking an S4 since it came out, last few months with Google Play Edition. Recently got a Moto X and would definitely recommend it all day long over the N5. Feels so great in hand and battery is indeed excellent. It's a tradeoff in terms of screen resolution/size (doesn't make much difference, honestly) but for me I appreciate the in the hand feel.

I have the N5 & Moto X dev and for a daily driver I choose the Moto X, because of the size, shape, battery life, & the OS "tuned" to multi processors. Yes the N5 has some better specs, & for certain users it's a preference. That said, the Moto X will serve quite well for a few years, at least. So within the next 2 years the convergence of the desktop & phone will be underway & a worthy upgrade to the Moto X will be available. If your not going directly into hacking (N5 if so), then the Moto X is very good choice.

I think rooting is fun and all but most people do it to fix issues with their device. The Moto X doesn't have any (or few, negligible) issues. It's vanilla Android with useful additions. It's a clean slate.

yeah the reason i've done it in the past is to remove bloatware and add functionality like tethering.

I think choosing between the N5 and Moto X is a very tough choice. I had the N4 and I love the freedom, MultiRom is a killer feature and it's very hard to let that go.
I chose the Moto X for its advertised features, the battery life, it's size (since I don't like big phones). I love AMOLED screen for the contrast, deep black and lack of backlight leakage, this is one of the best AMOLED screen I've seen in term of colors calibration, it's not extremely saturated like others. Also my impression is the Moto X is somewhat better built, the fact that it have nano coating to provide some water resistance is nice. I'm now also pleasantly surprised it have a great sounding speaker despite in the rear, it's the best sounding rear speaker from a phone I've heard.
I will eventually root my Moto X when I'm certain there are no issues that required use of warranty, but I love the touchless control and active display so I won't be going to custom rom without those features, unless there are some work around (I do use AutoVoice with Tasker). It's just that with other phones they don't have the optimized CPU or they lack AMOLED screen, so even with those third part alternatives I imagined they use up more battery. Despite my Nexus 4 having a quad core, for most tasks they aren't used (unless you install a custom kernel and tweak them). With the Moto X all the cores are better optimized and I'm guessing the language recognition and contextual cores help ease the work load when possible, so really it is more than a dualcore though I wouldn't call it "quadcore". In the end the benchmark score simply beat my Nexus 4 score, which had to be overclocked to match.
There are two things that disappointed me about the Moto X, lacks of qi charging and the headphone jack is CTIA format (I think), which means I need to use an adapter to use some headsets, this is true with some Sony phones, it bother the heck out of me. And also the lack of MultiRom, I really hope it will come to the Moto X one day though.
I think it's a really tough call, the Nexus 5 is a better device if you don't use the Moto X features and want to use custom roms or kernels. With the introduction of KitKat I mostly used stock on my Nexus with ART enabled, custom kernels is still something I desire though.

They haven't been bought out and the deal is being finalized, the us govt could step in to prevent it. I don't think I will worry too much about it, I'm just a little skeptical if the Moto X will continue to get updates and fast. Lenovo knows what they're doing, they did okay with Thinkpad and they aren't going to waste $3 billion on a brand just to ruin it. If I had a Moto G I wouldn't be worried at all since it have tons of kernels and roms.
sent via tapatalk

The language core and contextual core are for doing operations while the phone is sleeping. For example on my Galaxy S4, an "always-listening" feature would significantly impact my battery (and a lot of apps with that option will tell you this), but not with the X's low-power cores. The Snapdragon 800 also has that low-power listening core, but not lower-end CPUs (e.g. Snapdragon 600).

Any former S4 users jump ship to the X?

I've had my Verizon GS4 since late summer, and while it's a nice device, it's not as smooth as my GS3 was. No matter what ROM I use or what update I'm running, it still feels "laggy" a lot of times. My S3 was butter all around, never had a single hangup with it. However, I do enjoy the display on the S4, it's fantastic.
But, times are changing and I'm no longer picky about things as I used to be. I'm now looking for a device that's smooth, fast, and reliable. I'd also like to have a phone that's just a tad smaller, trying to carry the S4 with a case on my duty gear sucks sometimes.
I've been eyeing the Moto X since it came out and played with it in the store from time to time, seems really nice. I've bounced between the idea of getting the X or Droid Maxx, but it seems the X performs better.
Anyone here that used to have an S4 that went to the X? Thoughts?
Came from a S4...HTC One, Moto X, then iPhone (wat), DROID MAXX, and now Moto X. Yes call it abnormal but I like trying new things. Let me tell you, I normally don't go back to the same device twice but the Moto X is the first phone to do that to me. It's a fantastic phone for everyday use.
S4 was jank central, HTC One had, in my opinion, a well optimized Sense skin but terrible functionality on top of Android. Went to Moto X to try it out as I was skeptical if it could run well with its mid range specs. Hands down the best Android experience. Useful features such as Active Display and Touch less control is a great and useful thing to have.
Being adventurous and Ocd as I was, I wanted to compare it with the iPhone 5...let's not go there. Lasted 2 days until I went to a Droid MAXX.
Droid MAXX is just as smooth coupled with the same Moto X experience but the feel and ergonomics compared to the Moto X is unmatched.
And now I'm currently typing this from a Moto Made Moto X. My god is this thing a god send. So smooth and so efficient with Motorola's software optimization.
Do yourself a favor and switch to the Moto X. It has cured my flashing and device switching OCD for now.
Edited for grammar.

I jumped ship. I bought the S4 on release day and even though, on paper, it's superior spec wise it's nowhere near as smooth as my moto x. The only things I miss from my S4 is the camera, screen and the ir blaster. The feel, active notifications, and touchless controls trump all the things the S4 offered.
I did. I had the S4 for a bit but as soon as I found out about the Moto X and kept reading about it, I had to give it a try. Glad I did. It's much snappier and overall has a better feel in the hand then the S4 ever did.
The only thing I miss from the S4 is the awesome camera and a bit more dev support, there's definitely a lot more roms for the S4. But quite honestly there isn't much needed on this phone, it's awesome out of the box and with simply having xposed framework and some of those modules, you're set!
Well, I just found out that with the S4 on 4.3 (MJ7, etc), you cannot flash another kernel with Safestrap, you're locked into the stock kernel. I was hoping I could at least flash a different kernel to help with the lag issues, but that's not possible now.
Making the jump to the X more enticing, now.
I jumped and couldn't be happier!
First phone ever with "lower specs" but a much better experience (and battery life!)
I'm in the middle of considering it . I *LOVED* my Galaxy S 3, it worked great, then I upgraded to the S4 when it was released, signal strength never seemed as strong as with the S3 and I hoped a radio update would fix that, it never did...not to mention the weird storage partitioning they have (only 9gb available to the user on a 16gb device..da hell?)
When the Moto X price was reduced I bit the bullet as I had been tempted to buy it for quite awhile and that was the final straw, I purchased the Verizon Dev Edition, so far the screen is great, the speaker is AMAZING, and the battery life seems great!
I see a few of you have missed the camera from the S4, I was doing comparison shots yesterday with the S4 running CM11 (I know AOSP camera usually doesn't get as much love as stock), but the pictures looked pretty good on both phones to me, I actually preferred the Moto X versions on 9/10 pictures.
Can you only buy the Dev Edition from Motorola directly? If I go with the X, it will be the Dev Edition.
I'll be able to compare soon - I have an S4 for my work phone and my new moto arrives tomorrow. I love android, but wtf did Samsung do to make it so laggy? I can't flash it as its a work phone, so am stuck. Even the iPhone 5 feels fresh compared to it...!

Either that, or websites like swappa
I switched last month to the MotoX from the S4... Haven't looked back. I like the software out of the box for the X. I even prefer it to CM11 that I was running on my S4. As a matter of fact I may be a dedicated Motorola (non-"droid") customer. I like what they did with the software from top to bottom.

Agreed, I fully expected the X to become my backup phone, just in case anything happened to my S4, but now I'm just selling the S4. It doesn't even matter that my subsidized X doesn't have custom recovery, of course you won't have that problem with the Dev Edition.

I to am a former user of a GS4 , and before that was the HTC one .
Like some people here, i also like to try new gadgets, and i also had gs3, nokia lumia, htx 8x, but mainly i use in my day to day 2 phones, iPhone 5s and now the moto X . I still have my GS4 and the nexus 5, but the moto x is overall better, nothing on the papper can tell you that, it just is.. the iphone i still have, but it's been since GS3 that apple phones are not my go to phone, they are the one i leave in the car or at home when i don't want to carry 2 phones, but they are light , small, and if you don't use it much it last 4 days with a single charge.
I am now going back to GS4, just because i got bored with the moto x, but i'm sure i will be back to it in no time, and there is no good reason to use my gs4 back, coz the moto x reception is much better (4g all the time in my region, with galaxy it keeps switching between 4g and H+ all the time), also the speaker is much louder and clear that i actually use the speakerphone during a call, and i can't even say its beacause the camera, coz i don't use it that much, or the SD card too, 16gb is more then enought for my usage, so no logic in going back to GS4.
This year the story will be the same i guess, i will be buying the GS5 , and be waiting for the release of the New Moto X .

s4 to moto x
I had the s4 for awhile. it was a good phone, I hated touch wiz though. it was laggish and gimmicky. I rooted it and went to cyangenmod. the phone was good, no serious problems. I just recently got the moto x. its honestly the best experienced I've had. at first I was a littlie nervous with the "mid range specs". but from personal use you would never guess it had "mid range specs". it is buttery smooth. and the screen was pretty good to. The battery life is surprisingly good, considering it only had a 2200 mAh battery. the only thing that isn't that good is the camera. but it still does take good pics. just not as good as my s4.
damn, must have been the rom I was running on my S4, because my X takes better pictures.
Photo guy with dslr's for like 20 years... yeah, I'm that guy. I'm not even fat, lol.
Moto X is solid as stock. GS4 is best used with a GPE ROM IMO, even if left at 4.2 with safestrap. Add Google Experience launcher, root and use GravityBox to either the Moto X or GS4 and you have a very similar experience that is epic. The X certainly does an outstanding delivery with the human integration. If screen size matters to you, choose accordingly. It is a very close call! Pretty amazing really because the X has the CPU of the GS3, but with the same GPU as the GS4. Moto won my trust back when they delivered the X after having lost it when they left the Atrix 4G in the dust.

N4 vs Moto G

Hello guys,
I'm on the verge of buying a new smartphone after being into Windows Phone for too long.
I have a N7 2013 tablet which I've been using to play around with different Custom Roms and Kernels but now it's time to ditch my low end Windows Phone smartphone and go for a medium range Android device to play around with.
The two options at the moment are: Moto G new or an used but mint condition Nexus 4 still under warranty (for another year atleast). The price tag is almost similar 170€ (MotoG) vs 200€ (N4).
Now I know the proc on the MotoG is newer and slightly faster but the N4 sports a bigger screen and more Ram which to be honest, is the decising factor here. However, since I haven't owned any of these two devices I'd like to know if the N4 is still a safe pick, and if there are any issues I should be aware of.
Thanks!
hey , first of all get your facts right .
N4 proc and GPU is way way faster than Moto G's proc and GPU ..
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-S4-Pro-(APQ8064)-vs-Qualcomm-Snapdragon-400
secondly they both share IPS grade screens , but moto g has an advantage of gorilla glass 3 , ...
thirdly , n4 has one of the best developer community , way better than moto g ..
if u are confused between n4 and moto g , definitely go for the n4 .. its better in every possible aspect
but i would suggest waiting for some newer devices from google they might not be very far from launch
N4 all the way. The Moto G is inferior in every technical aspect (it's still a good phone but if you have the $$$ get something better!). The only physical advantage of the Moto G over the N4 is that the back cover is removable so you can easily swap sim cards without having to use a PIN, if that matters to you.
I have an N5 waiting for me (relative ordered in the states, bringing it when she visits) but I will definitely keep my N4 as a backup rather than sell it like I did with previous phones. The N4 is a great phone and just too good to waste.
Another good thing about Moto G is that is more comfortable at the hand that N4 will be. But overall N4 all the way, for being a AOSP device its simple to custom roms, kernels and everything

I have both, the Nexus is faster, bigger screen, better camera, better build quality and has superior development support.
It's a obvious choice for me. ☺
First of all thanks for the feedback.
I will probably go for the Nexus 4 since my budget is this low and the market here is overpriced compared to most places. Infact even the new market is.
The deal also includes a couple of cases, screen protectors and a bumper so it's the best choice.
Thanks all for the feedback.
Excellent choice, bro, you won't regret it.

Probably not a bad call. One yet unmentioned difference is Nexus 4 has NFC, moto g doesn't. I used to couldn't care less about that. But since I found out about Dimple (programmable, batteryless, custom placed NFC buttons), NFC actually matters to me. A lot of folks here dig the sleek buttonlessness of N4 and stuff like it, but I mostly got the phone because it was cheap at the time. I miss buttons a lot, especially for page turning in ebooks.
You never know when that tiny bit of extra functionality will turn out to be awesome. Enjoy your new phone :good:
Yeah, NFC tags at work and home are nice too. Once you start using it its hard to stop

^^^ This especially... Deciding between the two is actually tough, my son has the Moto G 16GB GPE edition and I have the Nexus 4 16GB.
I am similar to a previous user... I am mixed and go back and forth between which I prefer. Which is better for you depends on your usage
Moto G gives you incredible battery life (5-7 hours screen time, double the N4), it's waterproof (I can't believe no one mentioned this), Gorilla Glass 3
Nexus 4 has both a faster processor and GPU, has a larger display although I don't find it superior other than size, and has NFC and wireless charging (neither of which I use).
To be honest, although the 21Mbps vs 42Mbps thing is real, in real life it makes little difference in use, same with the processor... the N4 is faster but the G is more efficient, I have noticed little difference in performance between the two.
The Nexus 4 has a tremendous development community with more options and help than you can imagine, and although the Moto G has a decent community with most major ROMs supported, it is definitely not the Nexus 4 in that regard but if it's your thing you won't be bored either.
Honestly, no mater your choice you will get a good phone that will likely last a decent amount of time.
I remember you that the Moto G has a louder Speaker than the Nexus 4.
The moto G also support USB OTG, without any special Y cable or similiar things.
By the way I'm proud to own a Nexus 4.
I own both.
Nexus 4 is a better phone, BUT the Moto G comes damn close. Considering the low price of Moto G, I'll say it's a better bargain, even the more expensive 4G version, which adds support for LTE, which is something Nexus 4 doesn't have. But off course, it depends on the prices of the phones, in the area you live.
Hey guys!
The phone is home and it's the Nexus 4 16GB in super mint condition, with a ****load of screen protectors, bumbers and good cases, you name it.
It came with tempered glass screen protector at the front and a standard screen protector at the back.
Also, LTE isn't a big thing for me. Between Univ and my place I get alot of hotspots through Fon (https://corp.fon.com/pt/microsite/nos) so not a big deal.
Everywhere I go without Internet, I bring my mobile broadband pen and a sharing dock to get wireless.
The Moto G also arrived yesterday from Amazon and it really surprised me. The stock Android with some of Motorola subtle changes really make it a good phone hardware and software wise.
The problem here in Portugal is the used market is too damn retarded. People sell phones at prices that don't make sense. You see low end mobiles being sold at the price of gold. 200€ for a N4 is like a bargain compared to the prices asked for phones like Samsung SII which goes for 150 to 200€ here. Higher end phones never go for less than 300€ and most even locked to networks. A used N5 here would go for over 350€ eventhough the Playstore in Portugal has it at 349€. Yes, people are this retarded because all they care is how much they payed for the phone when they bought it and not the current new prices and the current options. How can you sell a crap phone at 150€ if for 170€ I can get a Moto G. Xiaomi's and other decent Quad cores from Amazon? Well...
Never the less, I'm happy with my choice.
Next step = Unlock Bootloader, Root and get some action going.

Why isn't this being released worldwide?!
I would buy it over the Moto X, but I doubt it'll come to the UK, or will be into next year for sure.
It's a Verizon exclusive, likely not to be released anywhere else. Would be an awesome device if it didn't have the Samsung-esque capacitive buttons. Big deal breaker.
As verizon's been having phone GSM unlocked, anyone planning on buying it and use it on other carriers?
Biggest down side might be unable to unlock(so far none with verizon moto devices)

And no lte, or software updates. Itd be pretty pointless to do so unfortunately.
As far as hownthey compare? I mean theres really no comparison. Better processor, screen, battery, camera. There isnt much the moto x offers over it besides design (which is subjective), button layout (also subjective), and slightly smaller size. However the biggest plus the X has is availability on any network.
The 805 is not really better than the 801. In fact, at the same frequency it performs the same. The only improvement you'll see are because 805 is clocked about 6% higher than 801.
Now speaking GPU the 805 has a much better GPU than 801...but because the droid turbo is using a 4k screen in real life the droid turbo will be less powerful than the moto x ( because GPU in 805 is more powerful but has a lot more work to do ).
So because of this I see only one improvement over the X : the battery. And for this of course the device is bigger.
If it didn't have those dumb soft keys it would be a no brainer. Why is it they think we need a 4k screen. Would have been more happy with the performance and extra battery life of 1080p
The only thing that really has me jealous is that ballistic nylon back, it looks tough as hell and I would KILL for that option for the X. Other than that, it doesn't really appeal to me. I think QHD screens are an unnecessary gimmick, and the extra horsepower the Turbo has is needed to compensate for it so I don't expect it to perform that much better than the X, if at all. Even if it does, realistically how much faster can a phone get? The X is blazing, and is easily the fastest phone I've ever owned. I prefer the physical design of the X, I think it is far more mature and elegant, and would choose the X over the Turbo on that alone.
Honestly, no one can deny that the screen is going to look better. Amoled and the particular setup moto used on the X, individual pixels are still discernable to the naked eye. Theres going to be a visual difference.
Bottom line is one phone will NEVER please everyone. You have someone saying 'id take a lower resolution screen with more battery life', then the next guy is going to say 'why only 1080p on a flagship phone in late 2014? The battery can support it!', but the next guy js going to complain about the capacitive keys and someone else wants it a little thinner with a slightly smaller battery.
Like what you have because bottom line we're not drag racing phones here. Theres no competition, at the end of the day they get the job done.
I think the slimmer, sleeker Moto X looks better than the Turbo. Just wish the X had the wireless charging. My wife wants to trade her Bamboo 2014 X for a turbo for that reason - and the bigger battery. She's a busy "soccer mom", in and out of the car all day long - and loved the wireless charging on her old DNA.

That what The Verge "hands on" with the Droid Turbo commented! If you are on Verizon then go for it! Otherwise; I just go with the Moto X if you like it or another phone. But once you are on Verizon it is hard to get out of it because they tie you in pretty well so you have to pick the right time to do so!
The battery is huge on the Droid - 3900 size! Bigger then the Nexus 6 even.
It will not be a Verizon exclusive. With that name, yes, but in Brazil it will be launched as Moto Maxx (XT1225) and it has already been approved by our FCC equivalent, Anatel. There is a Motorola event scheduled for the 5th of November and it's most likely to announce this. The invitation has a picture with the Droid Turbo's back on it. It's a international version of the Droid Turbo, and while we can't be sure, it shouldn't be a surprise if it launches on Europe and other markets as well.

Glad to see Turbo will be avail beyond Verizon. I still dont have my X, I wish the X had more battery and better camera, but since I havent experienced these for myself maybe the X will suit my needs. ...who knows...I guess in the states we have 30 days to return??

only 14 days unless you live in California for Moto X(from the day they ship too so you lose couple days from it)

I am in Cali, guess I'll have a little more time to decide.
The gsm variant will be called the moto x play. Don't know on release yet but att should be getting it. I have the moto x pure and got my demo turbo today. Its not as bulky as I thought and the screen and performance is not noticeably better. The battery life and camera however are much better. And the ballistic nylon is pretty damn sweet. I still prefer my moto x though.

The capacitive buttons are instantly going to be outdated as Android L has changed them up.
I think a lot of people like myself just hate them, and more than often find they simply add to the bulk of the phone.
The spec is cool on the turbo but it's nowhere near as sleek as the Moto X.
Nexus 6 is way too big!
I think the Moto X is a good medium between the 2 although I do sometimes wish they used a smaller body and went with a 5 inch display.
I prefer the x design

Why can't I let go of my Moto?

Why can't I let go of my original Moto X? I have a 2013 XT1053 Dev Edition, which I love greatly. I finally went ahead and, after much debate, bought a 2014 XT1095 Pure Edition last year to replace the 1st gen because it felt like it was getting a little slow, it has a bit of screen burn, and a little chip in the glass. The XT1095 is a great phone, just like the 1st gen but faster, and bigger. I've had it for 11 months now, and I've gotten used to it's larger size... but...
Yesterday I pulled the XT1053 out to clean my crap off of it, format it, install a fresh rom, and set it up as a backup. I was working with the phone for a couple hours getting everything sorted in my anal-retentive sort of way, and when I picked up the XT1095 afterward, it felt huge again! 11 months of getting used it it was undone in 2 hours!
Why does the original Moto X fit so perfectly in your hand? Why does it feel just right? Why does the screen look so smooth and deep? Why is the harmony of that phone so strong that I seriously considered pulling my sim card out of the XT1095 and going back to the XT1053?
It's not just the size or proportions either. I have a Nokia which is the same height, 5mm wider, and exactly the same depth. The extra width is barely perceptible. But it doesn't feel the same. Even though it too has a slightly rounded back... the edges, the corners... it's just not right. Especially the corners, they're half square.
And about that screen... I know both the 1st and 2nd gen Motos are AMOLED, the XT1053 being 720x1280 @ 312 ppi and the XT1095 being 1080x1920 @ 424 ppi, but the XT1053 looks smoother and has deeper colors, even though it has a lower resolution with fewer pixels per inch... and has some screen burn.
And on top of that, why, oh WHY am I looking at another 1st Gen Moto X on eBay?? To have as a backup for the backup that I don't even use as it is? Nevermind the three other non-Motorola "backup" phones.
Is it just me? It must be. Otherwise there would be something on the market to fill this void of design language harmony that seemingly only I perceive. But no, we have these giant phablets that took over the market, except for the Xperia Compact series, which are shaped like thick subway tiles. (Don't you dare even mention The A Word!)
So I suppose this is my re-appreciation post for my original Moto X. May it, and its siblings, live forever.

I feel the same feelings, more or less, and I'm still using old ghost as my daily driver. Long life to this super special phone :fingers-crossed:
Same here. Love the device. Hope we gonna see a revived version of moto x 2013
About 80%+ screen to body ratio would be great. See the galaxy s 8 ...
Who actually cares about the thickness of a device?
Thick & small or big & thin?
This is a great love letter to this (in part) forgotten device nowadays, like Stefano I use aa daily driver as today.
It's fell right because for me it's a win project with many thing got rights, sure have defect at time and more compared to today too spec but for me it's a special phone (also the first Android phone for me).
Probably I will use as secondary phone when (TBA xD) I have new one, sure I don't sell this little gems
Size to screen ratio was great for 2013.
The phone is special indeed and if it had a sdcard I would still be using it.
In my opinion, a thin device is actually harder to hold and pick up. On top of that, a large number of people are going to put these super thin devices in a super thick and bulky case, totally negating the developers' efforts to slim down the device. Forget thick vs thin, ergonomics is where it's at.
I'll give a good example. Just today I had a Galaxy S7 handed to me. It's unlocked and I could likely buy it for a cheap price. But I don't want it. Sure, the screen looks snazzy and "Oooh, it's an S7". But I keep pushing the buttons when I pick it up, and I can't seem to set it down without it going "thunk." I never noticed how the Motos curved back makes it so much nicer to simply pick it up and set it down, something I do 50+ times a day. At least Samsung is starting to get the idea with its "always on display." Except you can't do anything with it. No interactions are possible like with Moto Display.
Previously Motorola might have heard our cries of love and cherish for the wonderfully designed original Moto X and actually done something about it. Now that they're owned by the Chinese, they're just like every other phone company, competing for specs and speed. I notice that the Moto Z lost its curved back in favor of overpriced gimmicks that most people won't use.
When my 2nd gen Moto is too old to continue, I have no idea what I'll do. Maybe I'll just strap a Microsoft Surface Pro to my head and call it a year.
What os version are you running? I think kitkat, although old, runs best on the device and everything works, although battery is bad on kitkat.
Moto x was made for kitkat.
I just switched from 4.4.4 to 5.1. To me, 5.1 feels smoother and more responsive. However, it could just feel that way because it's a fresh install. 5.1 removed the wave to wake feature/bug, but other than that I'm not disappointed with it. I don't use it as a daily driver anymore though. Perhaps if I did I would change my mind.
If only there was a custom ROM that implemented the Moto Display features like the stock ROMs, I'd give that a try. I've tried Cyanogen and NX ROM on it, but I miss the Moto Display too much and I always go back to factory. That includes my 2nd gen X. After doing a little research, it looks like Moto Display uses the Motorola framework, which isn't present on any custom ROM that I know of. I guess that means Moto Display is forever a factory Motorola-only feature.

Actually marshamallow ROM imitate well Moto display for me, I use Lineage 13 and ambient display is very similar to stock one.
Also with Tasker in stock 5.1 I remember using it to have wave to wake again (present in the rom)
For me 4.4.4 was the best stock, 5.1 have lot of but because lollipop is a bad Android version.
The only advantage is the stock is the most stable ROM obliviously but MM ROMs works well for daily use imho

I have the same 2013 32GB Dev Edition that has been my daily driver until now, working almost perfectly on LineageOS, and I get where you're coming from. I am trading it in for a galaxy S8, and even though I have switched to the S8, I just dont want to send in my Moto X. Just unrooted and returned to stock, and feels like end of an era.
When your 4 year old device has a better screen to body ratio than the latest iphone, you know your device was well designed.

Nooo! Don't send it in for a trade-in! They're gonna... r... r... recycle it! (GASP!) Get some old POS phone for 20 bucks on eBay to give them as a trade (currently there's a dead Sprint Moto X for $23 shipped). Keep your Moto for a backup, or pass it on to someone else who's enamored with the great little Moto. Especially since it's a Dev Edition! I'd offer to buy it from you if I didn't already have five and a half "backup" phones.
I know, it's not an easy choice. The 200$ discount for a working phone is just too hard to pass on, and I've already committed to sending it in.
It was a great phone, its time has passed.

No, I have no idea what you're talking about
When I first bought my Moto X 2013 , I had no idea how badly I would be screwing myself in the smartphone expectations department for years to come. You nailed it all on the head, so I won't go into it too much.... but...
It's the best feeling phone in the hand all of time. Period. No other phone melts into the palm of your hand like that phone (Motorola even bragged about this in their original marketing for the OG Moto X.) No jagged corners/edges that are uncomfortable to hold. Beautiful plastic material that did not feel cheap and could stand up to drops and scratches with ease. Motomaker options for Wood (Leather for 2014 later) and customizing the colors and buttons were all great touches to making the phone feel personal.
Then the thing that really ruined phones for me is the Moto software. Especially on the Moto X 2014 and 2015. The Wave to Wake on those phones is insane and makes you feel like a damn Jedi to use it. Years after their release, I'm still impressing people by talking to my phone while it's off or waving over it quickly to see what time it is (while it takes everyone else several seconds to pick up their phone and press a button.) How is that a 3+ year old phone makes other phones look archaic and dated? Active Display (like you touched on) is so much better than any other iteration (Always On or Ambient Display.)
With Active Display you can click and hold on a notification icon to interact with it without waking up the display. While holding on to the notification bubble, you can go to the notification (Swipe UP) or dismiss the notification (Swipe Left or Right) or just unlock the phone and go to the home screen (lock screen if you have security settings) by Swiping DOWN... all right from the Active Display without waking up the phone.
With Ambient Display, as soon as you touch any part of the screen when a notification wakes the Ambient Display, you wake up the whole phone to the lock screen. That means a lot of accidental wake ups in your pocket which always drove me nuts. So it's got the advantage of only the Notification Bubble being an active part of the screen and the ability to make actions on the notification right from Active Display without even waking the phone. It's simple and genius and it's really annoying that no other OEMs have picked up on this and replicated it.
And then you have your gestures with chop for flashlight and twist for camera (I actually could take Double Press Power Button shortcut over this.) All these damn amazing features are getting diluted in Motonovo's hands with the reduction of IR sensors on the front (From 2014-2015 Moto X's 4 front facing IR sensors to now a max of 2 IR sensors on the Moto Z I believe.)
I am so spoiled for every other phone coming out today. Bezels are friggin huge even on 5.2" phones now. When I owned the Pixel for a short while, I had to swallow my pride and accept that my Moto X 2014 had a 5.2" screen in a smaller body size than the 5" Pixel. Don't get me wrong, the speed/camera/battery life of the Pixel is amazing. I just wish I could have all those things in the 2013/2014 Moto X body with Moto X software.
I'm at a loss for what phone to buy next. I was hoping the new Moto X could be good but it's looking like just another boring ass Motonovo phone that has nothing to do with the original Moto Xs. I was hoping maybe the new Pixel 2 would be comfortable but it sounds like they're just keeping the same exact body size/screen size as the original Pixel and only decreasing the Bezels on the Pixel 2 XL.
There's just no phone manufacturer anymore that really cares about the user experience (except maybe Apple, but you have to live in Apple's walled garden which is something I'm not really willing to do.) But even Apple tends to favor a PREMIUM experience rather than comfortable experience I'd say. Everyone else is just making thinner phones that aren't comfortable whose battery life sucks and bezels are too big and uncomfortable to hold and they're fragile as **** made out of premium materials with absolutely NO personality.
When Rick Osterloh (head of Motorola Design at the time of the original Moto Xs) moved to oversee Google Hardware division, I had great hope that he would influence the design direction of the Pixel. But it seems that they're still just hiring HTC/LG to copy and paste their uninspired designs over and then let Google do their hardware/software magic on the inside. The Pixel is a fantastic phone but it's huge downside is the design. It's a pretty phone but it's not comfortable to hold and it's too expensive/fragile to feel comfortable using case-less. I want a phone I can use without a damn case to bulk it up and make it look ugly.
I was actually excited by this failed indiegogo project just because they gave me original Moto X feels. Their mission statement and design philosophy hit a lot of the right Moto X notes to me: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nuans-neo-reloaded-smartphone-design#/
The problem @DrvLikHell is that you and I are a complete minority. There's no market for compact phones like there used to be. There's no reason to stop and consider the user experience and ergonomics and product design like they used to. The market is telling them to make thinner/sexier/bigger/more premium looking phones and they're making a TON of money doing so. Why is there any reason to stop?
Part of me wants to try and research who really worked on the Moto X design and interview them. Where are they working now? Why can't they make another Moto X like phone that feels really special and custom tailored to the user? Where the experience of using the phone is a simple joy? The phone should feel as personal as it is to our daily lives. Instead, phones expect us to adapt to THEM.
"Oh, it's a little uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time. But it's okay."
"Such a beautiful phone but I have to buy a case to protect it so I can sell it in a year when I upgrade. If I drop it, it will shatter."
"It's kind of heavy and hurts my wrist after awhile."
"The sides kind of dig into my hands a bit but it's such a fast phone."
"The battery life isn't that great but the 2K display is amazing to look at."
"It doesn't have a headphone jack, but they make a dongle for it."
The Moto X felt like it was custom made for the user and you didn't have to accomodate for anything. Well, that is until 2-3 years down the road when the age set in and the camera didn't look so good compared to the new cameras coming out and the batteries started to die and the phone became sluggish...
My perfect dream phone is:
1. The body of the 2013 or 2014 Moto X
2. Pixel 2 hardware inside (assuming it will improve on Pixel)
3. Waterproof
4. Headphone jack
5. Moto X Software
6. Fingerprint Scanner inside Moto X dimple on the back
7. Motomaker Customization
8. Reliable software updates for 2-3 years.
It's crazy that this is asking too much. Isn't it?
Well, I could really ramble on about this phone forever. I just wanted you to know that you're not alone and crazy in this Moto X universe.
I'd like to ask you.. is there any phone on the horizon that you're hopeful for?
I'm glad to see I'm not the only Moto zealot. Everything you said could have come straight from my keyboard.

I keep looking for the elusive "next phone," especially since my 2014 Moto X is starting to have a couple issues like the beginning of a loose charge port and battery bizarreness once in a while. But every time I search, I come up empty handed. There will not, in the foreseeable future, be a phone with outstanding ergonomics like the Moto X. I've come to accept that finally. What I'd really love to have is something similar to Moto Display. (I refer to it as Moto Display because I always get Active Display and Ambient Display mixed up.) But I might have to accept 3rd party suckyness because I just don't see anything on the horizon. What I can't accept is carrying around a giant plank of marketing cheapness.
I say marketing cheapness because generally, stupid consumers (well over half of America) buy what is being sold to them. One big reason manufacturers are marketing larger phones to people because they're cheaper to engineer. Everybody knows it's harder and more expensive to fit more tech into a smaller package. So by making the phone bigger, they can save money on engineering and use the "bigger is better" philosophy as a scapegoat. In reality, half the blame falls on the manufacturers for doing this, and half falls on the consumer for accepting it. For the rest of us, we're screwed.
Let us have a look at your list:
1. The body of the 2013 or 2014 Moto X
2. Pixel 2 hardware inside (assuming it will improve on Pixel)
3. Waterproof
4. Headphone jack
5. Moto X Software
6. Fingerprint Scanner inside Moto X dimple on the back
7. Motomaker Customization
8. Reliable software updates for 2-3 years.
We can strike number one off the list because it's just never going to happen. The best we can hope for is a small form factor phone with top tier gear inside. Number two is entirely possible, perhaps not specifically Pixel 2 hardware, but a high end at least. Waterproof, possible. Headphone jack, sure. Moto X Software... <sigh> never going to happen. Moto features are run by specific Moto hardware. If I remember correctly, there's a special low power chip that runs the Moto Display and Moto Voice features and that's why you can't even port the code to another phone or get it in a custom ROM. Fingerprint scanner in the Moto X dimple... since the dimple is gone from the new Motos, not gonna happen either. They've also severely toned down the Motomaker customization for the Moto Z, and no one else offers it so that's pretty much out as well. Reliable updates, maybe, if you get the phone when it first comes out, and if comes out at the same time latest version of Android is released, and/or if it's very popular and has good aftermarket ROM development.
This is what your wish list looks like after it's been run through the reality machine:
1. Not giant, preferably small with high screen/body ratio
2. High power CPU
3. Waterproof
4. Headphone jack
5. Fingerprint scanner
6. Reliable updates for 2, maybe 3 years.
Pretty sucky. And even with this redacted list, there's only one phone that I know of which used to meet all of these requirements. The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. I almost bought one instead of my 2014 Moto X, but I decided that I couldn't live without the Moto Display, so I traded small for Moto Display awesomeness. If you're looking for brand new hardware, the Z5 is two generations behind now.
There was a rumored Galaxy S7 Mini, similar to the S5 mini of old. It would have fit the redacted list, but it never came to be.
The regular Galaxy S7 is close to the size of the 2014 Moto X. I had one for a few days, but as I said before, the ergonomics just wasn't there, and the always on display was a poor replacement, neigh, not a replacement at all for Moto Display. Samsung may get around to it though. After I updated the S7 I was able to tap the notifications to open them. I couldn't interact with them like with Moto Display, but at least Samsung made it DO something besides act like a notification light. I kinda wish I had hung on to it, but I'm sure I would have gone back to my Moto after a short while.
The verdict for people like us? Start our own company and make our dream phone ourselves, or hang onto our aging phones until they're no longer viable for everyday use, and then settle for the least bad of the lot that the manufacturers are pushing on the public.
For me, I prefer a phone that's at least a year old so it's cheaper and at least some of the bugs have been worked out. I also usually prefer a phone that's more than one generation newer than what I have. The 2014 Moto X was an exception because it was the last "real" Motorola. Currently, there is no phone on the market that fits. If my 2014 Moto X got crushed tomorrow, I'd go back to my 2013 Moto X and continue waiting for the "next phone" to turn up. I'd possibly scour Swappa for another 2014 Moto X, or maaaaybe a Moto G4 from Europe while I continue the wait. If I got a job where they demanded that I have a more modern phone (almost happened once), I'd begrudgingly get an S7 or Pixel. Sad state of affairs man, sad state.
If you, or anyone else, find a more qualified replacement, I'd love to hear about it. I'm consciously ignoring the small issues my Moto X is starting to develop, hoping they'll just go away because there's nothing acceptable to replace it with.
Edit: There seems to be a Moto X4 on the horizon, as well as a new Xperia and a new flagship Nokia 8 and/or 9 running Android. We'll see if any of them can tick enough boxes to be a contender.
Guys, maybe we don't have to wait any longer.
LG is going to present the LG 6Q on the 11 of July.
Hope this device is gonna be real mini.
LG 6 has got a 78,6% body to screen ratio.

Yeah, the latest Moto X4 leaks have me pretty bummed. Just looks like another Motonovo phone with nothing really different or OG Moto X'ish about it. Nokia 8 or 9 or whatever could be good but then I read that the bands available on it aren't going to be full-fledged US ready?

Huh, interesting. I'm going to keep my eyes on this announcement. So rare that we get a "Mini" announcement of a flagship these days. There's not really much wrong from what I hear about the LG G6. Mini version could be solid. What do you think of it @DrvLikHell?
@DrvlikeHell
Man, I haven't really seen what Moto Display looks like on the newest Motorola phones. Check this out:
https://youtu.be/5OE_C3g6LeU?t=157
2:37 into the video.
Now you can actually respond to texts from within Moto Display. Soo hot.
Ugh, why can't Motonovo figure out camera quality and smaller bezels? That's all I need to convince me to get a new Moto phone.
Looks like we're getting Moto Z and X announcements at the end of the month:
https://www.theverge.com/platform/a...6/motorola-nyc-event-july-25-moto-x-time-date
The simple joy of spinning a Moto x while it lays face up. Checking the display in a pitch black room and seeing nothing but the lit pixels.
I'm typing this on my 1st Gen Moto X Dev edition. I recently replaced the battery, the screen, and the back cover (went with the Walnut wood back and an all black body)
I've broken two Moto X phones in the last couple years. Eventually I taught myself to repair them. I wish they would unlock the bootloader across all carrier models, but in the meantime, apps like the Google Now launcher help to keep the device feeling fresh on 5.1
The only other phone I loved like I love my Moto X was the palm pre, which had a slide up physical keyboard and it's own operating system with the absolute best multitasking interface yet devised for phones (IMHO of course). It was marketed horribly. Just hideous advertising. And when palm went out of business and bought by HP, and HP replaced it's CEO twice and then gave up on the investment, I thought I wouldn't love another phone until I got handed a Moto X.
I've owned a few Samsung Phones, and my wife has an iPhone. These days I carry two phones, the Moto X and an LG V20 for it's video and audio recording capabilities. In my line of work as a manager, having a business and personal phone number makes sense for multiple reasons.
I recently sold one of my repaired Moto X to an employee who keeps buying and breaking inexpensive phones. It was hard to let go of it at any price, but I slapped a clear case and a screen protector on it and handed it over. So far he's loving it. I showed him some of the Moto specific features and his level of awe was really gratifying.
It's absolutely true that the best designed devices rarely become the most popular or widely accepted, but as sure as the Moto X replaced my Palm Pre, some company somewhere will make at least one generation of a near perfect phone. Until then, I'll be refurbing and evangelizing the 2013 Moto X. Now more affordable than ever.

I take it that you're using stock 5.1 rom? It's so hard going back to the 2013 Moto X because of the performance. Otherwise, I'd use mine more often.

/|\ This, exactly. Over and over. I must have said to myself 100 times, "if only I could upgrade the processor like on my computer."
The LG 6Q could be interesting. I'm not sure about that funky screen resolution though, and I've never been a fan of LG. I want to see it's exact specs and dimensions. If it looks good I will still keep it in mind and I'll watch to see how it does in its first year. The articles I read said that it will have a 5.4" screen in the body of a phone that would normally fit a 5 or 5.1" screen and that it may have the same processor as the LG 6. Processor speed in a small package is a large part of the formula (for us), but it has to have some kind of magic aside from that. Things like root, an unlocked bootloader, and either a near AOSP stock rom, or good custom rom support are important too.
I actually went to BestBuy specifically to compare the new Moto Z to my 2014 Moto X. I wanted to make sure that the Moto Display still worked the same and see how much bigger the Z is. The added features of the new Moto Display are neat but didn't interest me all that much. I'm just glad that they didn't make it like the Ambient Display app. Even with my Moto X in its case, the naked Moto Z was still bigger. If they sold the dual sim version here in the US, I'd be tempted to buy one. But I know I'd be annoyed having an even larger plank in my pocket.
If Lenovo would only make one of them a little smaller, I just might be on board to buy a new one. There's hope because the new Moto G5 (non plus) comes with a 5" screen. Though it still has a bigger frame than the 2014 Moto X, it's a step away from 5.5" everything. I think they realized that you don't have to have the biggest screen to be competitive. The hugely successful Galaxy S6 and S7 with their 5.1" screens proved this. (Not to mention all of the non-plus iPhones with 4.7 inch screens, or smaller.)
I hope it will be like @Colfax.miller says, that someone will eventually make a phone that we're enamored with. However, the last phone that I was this taken with was another Motorola... the V70. I really don't want to wait that long.

Should I stay or Should I go?

So. I am going on 3 years with the Turbo. I love this phone. Everything about it (Wish we had a custom N rom with VoLTE but that is it). I have a 64 and a 32gb back up (currently running 32 as 64 being stupid) and only one good screen between the two.
My wife has the Pixel XL which I do like, but the three things that keep me tied to this phone are: Hardware Home Keys, the IR sensors is a HUGE must after having this phone, and the Chop/twist which i'm sure there is an app for on other phones and she keeps telling me the phone isn't going to last forever XD
I just see the forums here dwindle down to almost nothing the past few months so makes me wonder how many people have moved on. I honestly don't care for the the new Moto phones. Too light, don't like the look or feel, its just meh. The attachments seem cool but don't need them. With the Pixel 2 out now and that will drive the Pixel 1 price down it makes me wonder if I should get one (Through google of course because i wanted my unlocked BL and Root) but I just can't seem to give this phone up! Both of these guys are having issues and i'm determined to fix them this weekened. Wouldn't mind buying another screen or even another phone if i had the 100 bucks. I'd rather buy a few backups than a new phone.
I just wanted to see what everyone's opinion is. Do you still have a Turbo. If you don't what did you move to and if you do how is working for you and do you plan on getting rid upgrading soon? Because honestly this phone is still powerful for what I do.
The Quark was cutting edge back end of 2014 and until this year, and I seriously mean until this year (2017) there wasn't anything released that really surpassed it. Sure there were phones with iteratively faster CPUs each year -- but until this year with Snapdragon 835 and phones coming with standard 4GB RAM (and some 6GB RAM), the 2014 Quark 3GB RAM still ruled even if it had the older Snapdragon 805. Plus all the hardware specs it has -- 1440p AMOLED, Qi wireless charging, 3900 mAh battery, 64GB internal memory (on my XT1225), 21MP camera (even though it has no rear camera OIS) kept it competitive with newcomers the past couple of years.
But the 2017 Snapdragon 835 is really a "next gen" CPU chipset however, not only with speed but with the 1 gigabit LTE speed modem.
In 2015, I won an AT&T LG G4 in a contest but sold it on eBay to buy a 3rd Quark for backup purposes. The 1440p LG G4 had a faster Snapdragon 808 CPU (and I added a Qi wireless back cover), but overall just didn't have all the features of the Quark. If the Quark didn't exist, that LG G4 would have been my favorite phone -- but I still would have sold that one to get a bootloader unlocked variant.
There's a thread discussing all this over in the other Quark forum -- 2017 phones that we were looking forward to as possible replacements. We were going by leaks and rumors, and anticipated FANTASTIC phones! As the year went on, the phones actually released and were mostly disappointing (Z2 Force with no headset jack, OnePlus 5 with still mid-tier specs, Nokia with locked down bootloader) and the thread updated, it's basically come down to the LG V30 for me. For @TheSt33v, he's leaning toward the Pixel XL 2 (in spite of no headset jack). Many others participated too, of course. The thread lists all our criteria and why we are deciding on these phones.
You know:
1440p AMOLED
Qi wireless charging
headset jack
easily unlocked bootloader
at least 64GB internal memory
at least 4GB RAM, preferably 6GB
etc.
NEW Phones to replace 2014 Quark (Droid Turbo/Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx)?
So, probably going to buy the LG V30 in about 3 months -- AFTER the U.S. carrier unlocked version is released (mid-November) AND it gets added to the LG bootloader unlock list (probaby end of December). I'm not going to buy a phone I can't root on Day 1. I've already sold my 3rd still-new-in box Moto XT1225 on Swappa a couple of weeks ago. It was for emergency backup purposes, but now clearing the decks. I've already bought some LG V30 cases in anticipation.
My wife will still keep her Moto XT1225 as she still loves it, and still runs good. So, I'll still be in the Quark forums besides the V30.
The only reason I wouldn't buy the LG V30 is if the rumored ZTE Axon 9 (the successor to the 2016 ZTE Axon 7) just really nails all my wants and needs. Like if it's the LG V30 + stereo speakers. Supposedly will be announced in October, and the ZTE Axon 7 has been out of stock on the ZTE USA website for a few weeks now.
same here with both of you.
my next phone needs to have the quarks best features (Qi wireless charging, sensors for wave to wake, 3900 mAh battery) plus unlockable or at least rootable from day 1, and 3.5mm headphone jack (although this will not be the dealbreaker, but everything else prior is).
I'm willing to bet that we'll see Oreo (custom) on the quark before we see a device that is at least equivalent in specs.
but as of now, I'm content with CF MM ROM + xposed + GB + Oreo Launcher.

Battery was a big deal for me too, and the Pixel XL 2's battery doesn't quite make it (3520 mAh), but it's pretty close. I'm okay with it because it quick charges. I'm also a fan of wave to wake, which is why I'm looking forward to the Pixel XL 2's always-on display. I won't even need to wave anymore!
I'm glad you brought up Oreo roms, because this is the number one reason I went Pixel. Our devs do their best with what they have, but imagine a world where you could get AOSP roms on day 1 of official release that are made by professional developers that have access to 100% of the source code, including the proprietary stuff. This feature is a Pixel exclusive. Imagine being able to get monthly security updates on a reliable basis. And even when it runs out, even when it's not officially supported anymore, Google devices have been, and likely always will be, the devices that get the most support from the community.
That Oreo rom you're waiting for? I put it on my Nexus 4 weeks ago. That's right, Nexus 4. A phone released in 2012 gets upgraded to the latest Android version in 2017. And what hoops did I have to jump through to get unofficial roms running on my phone? fastboot oem unlock. That's it. That's why I'm willing to make a few hardware compromises for a Google phone. And in my opinion, there really aren't that many compromises that I need to make.

all valid points and understood.
but at the end of the day, it just comes down to personal taste - and in the absence of a perfect scenario, we all have to make compromises.
the XL is too big for me. in fact, the quark is almost too big as it is.
plus, but I don't want to sacrifice hardware. as of now, the quark is still the best option for me. even if the battery dies, I may end up getting a new battery rather than getting a new device...

Yes, the Pixel XL 2 is a much bigger phone than the LG V30.

with Quark for size comparison:
But if you want to read through the specs differences, here you go:
SPECS: QUARK vs LG V30 vs PIXEL 2 XL
This year especially brought a lot of changes. One year to the next, not so much. But cumulatively, 3 years, it adds up.
For instance, cameras....
Aperture size (smaller is better)
Quark: F2.0
LG V30: F1.6
Pixel 2 XL: F1.8
Hardware Features
Quark: Autofocus
LG V30: Dual-camera (13-megapixel, 120-degree viewing angle, F1.9 aperture), Optical image stabilization, Autofocus (Laser, Phase detection)
Pixel 2 XL: Optical image stabilization, Autofocus (Laser, Phase detection)
Motorola should have included rear camera OIS on our Quarks like they did the Motorola Nexus 6. That remains a sore point with me. I had it on my 2013 LG Nexus 5, and it was on the 2014 Moto Nexus 6 -- so it's not like Motorola didn't know how to do it. (Motorola was owned by Google at the time of design of both the Quark and the Moto Nexus 6.) By late 2014, rear camera OIS was a standard feature of premium phones and the Quark was a premium phone.
And while dual cameras is not necessary, it's nice to be able to choose between wide angle lens or normal for certain shots.
Torn Between LG V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL? Me Too…
LG V30 or Google Pixel 2 XL? LG V30 or Google Pixel 2 XL? LG V30 or Google Pixel 2 XL? I just CANNOT decide.

just read/watch that video about the Augmented Reality - looked very cool!
but again, the XL is too large, and the regular's battery is only 2700 mAh, with still no Qi. I may be sold on the wireless headphones, as both times at the gym this weekend, the cord did bother me.... but I don't have to get a new phone to solve that....
There's finally some topics not involving bootloader and rooting.
I agree that the droid turbo is still very competitive in terms of hardware spec, although it is not very promising to see many new firmware any more. I think it is not so much that droid turbo has a high-end spec, but is due to the fact that the android ecosystem has somehow reached a peak, that products only compete on CPU speed, camera and screen pixels, like the PCs some ten years ago. Products are very similar at its core, some are better in CPU, while some are better in camera or battery, but none of them can give a clear win on all aspect or really inspire users with new usage. I therefore don't see any of the recent products that is outstanding and can catch my attention.
While I am fully satisfy with the droid turbo, its battery starts worrying me. Its drop in performance becomes significant, and since I live in Hong Kong which the droid is not officially sold or supported, I don't even have a way to replace the battery. When I bought the device, I planned to use it for three years before I consider upgrading, which should be July 2018, but I am not very optimistic now I can wait that long. Its even sadder as it was due to battery rather than the device itself.
Anyway, it's nice to see the forum still have some firm supporters that I can count on when I have problem. I am not leaving this device and forum any time soon, but it's hard to tell.
Liking my Turbo's performance as well. The newer phones are just bigger and flashier. Already replaced the battery, and when it dies, and I can't find a reasonable replacement, I'll be dragged, kicking and screaming, to get a new phone. Hopefully, sizes will have stabilized...or even shrunk slightly.
