A) answers don't always come in less than an hour. Sometimes they don't come at all. B) There is no ability to flash a ROM on an i537 as it has a locked bootloader. The only way to use a different ROM is with Safestrap. C) There is no root for the OTA 4.3. D) You need to use some periods and commas so your posts make some sense.

thanks I know the bootloader is locked and we can't get custom recovery the roots helps and fix alot of issues on android phones .. i used safestrap on MF1 with s4 Google Edition and Hyperdrive ROMs

What Can we do with a locked bootloader?

Can someone tell me what we will actually be able to download if bootloader remains looked? Can we flash certain types of Rom or mods? Or can we do nothing?

Should work the same as the S4 MF update that locked down the bootloader. You should be able to root but as for custom roms and CWM/TWRP we're out of luck.
Coming from a S4 running CM10.2 I'm not going to like using the standard rom but will get used to it I guess.
So even with the bootlegged locked we should be able to tour so we can use TB to backup and restore?

I have a locked MF3 firmware S4 and I'm running 3 different ROMs that are hot swappable thanks to Safestrap developed my Hashcode so even with a locked bootloader you can do something. Only thing is for now we are limited to internal storage for the ROM slots can't create them on external SD card but Hashcode has been working on that. Also we can only flash TW ROMs since we can't flash a custom kernel but that is also being worked on, I believe they want to be able flash a kernel with kexec. I have an AT&T S4 and currently swapping between an international Foxhound ROM, Google Play ROM, and well the stock ROM.

At this point I'd be happy with just root so I can use Titanium Backup.
Would be nice if we could get Loki.

Even tho I don't have any phone that has a bootloader. (i don't live in the USA Neither)
But if your Bootloader is locked you cannot Flash CWM or TWRP or flash custom roms (Because they need CWM or TWRP).
Sorry if I'm wrong. I don't have any phone with locked bootloader. Hope this helps.

Ditto... which is why I am returning my AT&T Note 3 less than 24 hrs after I purchased it.
My fault for not researching the bootlocker issue, but no way am I going to give up Titanium Backup. It has saved my tail more than once.
I'm also coming from an att S4. There has not been a bootloader unlock exploit but they do have some work around exploits like loki & safestrape. Loki is out bc they've already patched that so at this point I just hope we get root bc without that you don't have a fighting chance at custom roms

All I want to do is remove the AT&T bloat as well as the Samsung bloat. When I took my stock Note 2 and installed Cleanrom on it it felt like the phone got a cpu boost. Everything was smoother and faster.
With root, can we uninstall crap that is blocked from being removed while stock? I can live with a locked bootloader if I can just get as close to a stripped rom as possible. I'm pretty new to this stuff so forgive the newbie question.

Roms for att version of active

Can we flash the att 4.4 s4 roms on our phone that say their safestrap compatible? If not where would b the roms for us att users who r rooted and still on 4.2.2? I see only international version Compatible but non that say att....

You're right, I didn't fully answer your question there are a bunch of SafeStrap threads out there and a few of them have the answers you're looking for, but not the one I linked to.
Since we have a locked bootloader we cannot flash things that aren't signed by Samsung. SafeStrap gets around this by redirecting everything to a different data partition. Unfortunately it can only do this after the kernel loads, and since there's no way to flash a different kernel you're stuck with the stock kernel on your phone. This is important.
You can only flash ROMs that work with the stock kernel on your phone. So since you are on MF3, you can only use ROMs that are based on 4.2.2 TouchWiz. If you're on MI2 then you can flash 4.3 TouchWiz-based ROMs. So you are very limited as to what you can flash.
As for not being able to get ROMs to work, you need to make sure you have enough free space when creating a ROM slot, 4-5 GB should be plenty. You cannot share apps or data between different ROM slots so be careful with your space. You should be able to get the GPE ROM to work, I'm using it right now. So completely delete your ROM slot 1 and recreate it. Then follow the steps exactly as they are written in the thread I linked to and make sure you flash the proper module files for your phone.
If you have any other questions, let me know.
Ty for being more in depth in ya answer and that... I have tried the gpe room three times and it never boots it goes to Android stock recovery..

Three questions:
What stock firmware are you on?
What version of SafeStrap are you using?
What modules are you flashing afterwards?
If you could link to everything, including the ROM it would be helpful.
I'm on mf3, safe strap 3.71,gpe 4.2.2 listed in thread with roms that are working with safestrap... Mf3 master patch as listed in thread that supposed to contain all the files in one

I think SS 3.71 is for 4.3, you need SafeStrap 3.65, for 4.2.2

You need to be using SafeStrap 3.65 if you're on MF3. 3.71 is for 4.3 stock ROMs (MI2). One you do that everything should work just fine.
U were correct 3.65 safe strap worked ...currently using the Google play edition as my main os and must say it brought this phone to life ...its much snappier and responsive then it was stock rooted....

Make sure you disable the AT&T updater on your stock ROM just in case they try to push an update and lock your phone down.
Well using the gpe I don't have speaker phone...I can hear them but my mic won't work ...know I flip it back to earpiece my mic works ...what up with that ??? Anyone else with that issues ???

There are two known issues with GPE, read the thread they've been talked about in depth. Also that thread is probably where this question belongs.
As you've reported this is one of the known bugs, there is no fix. The other is that you cannot see your phone's storage from a computer when connected via usb. Again there is no fix.
Please post all ROM-related questions in their respective threads.

Maintaining root

I'm still running android 4.2.2(no otas) and I was wondering if root keep works in this device.

You mean if you upgrade?
If you have an unlocked bootloader, yes, you can root and disable write protection no matter what ROM is on your X.
If you can't unlock your bootloader, then you are safe to install 4.2.2 with camera fix update, or 4.4 update. You can continue to use SlapMyMoto to root, and MotoWPNoMo to disable write protection.
BUT DO NOT install 4.4.2. If you have rooted with SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo and take the 4.4.2 OTA, you might keep root, but will lose the important Write Protection Disabled that MotoWpNoMo gave you, with no way to get it back. When Write Protection is enabled (the phone's default state with locked bootloader, or the state you are in after you take the 4.4.2 OTA), any changes made to /system, or the like, (including, but not limited to, App installs, file modifications, deletions, renames, etc) are not permanent and are lost at power off/on.
SlapMyMoto doesn't work on 4.4.2, and at this time, no new working root exploit and process has been released. And part of the 4.4.2 update patches the exploit that MotoWpNoMo used, so it wont work.
The 4.4.2 update also updates the bootloader which will prevent safely being able to downgrade the ROM version on your phone. If you try to flash 4.4. or lower, you will either brick your phone, or get it in a state where you will brick when taking an update.
So then I could still take the camera update as long as I don't go to 4.4?

You can still root 4.4 as well. Its 4.4.2 that You can't, and you'd want to stay away from if you have a locked bootloader.

You should check the stickies on that. The rooting methods have been updated a lot since pre camera 4.2.2 which is what you're on. Please read the stickies and Jcase's root threads as those are going to give you the best info.
Oh ok thank you both!

Got an s5, did towelroot, refuse updates?

I rooted with Towelroot and all is well on 4.4.2. AT&T is trying to push an update. I want to make sure I keep root. Suggestions on whether I should keep refusing the update, or if installing Voodoo OTA rootkeeper will retain my root for newer Kitkat versions, etc., would be much appreciated. Also I am contemplating how to install TWRP safely, so pointers to instructions on how to do so without breaking my new s5 would be great. Thanks as always to the awesome people on XDA who come through every time!

Don't take the update. You should use titanium backup to freeze at&t software update and the security policy update. If you don't, the update will eventually apply itself without your consent.

DO NOT try to install any CUSTOM Recovery! Only SafeStrap will work until Bootloader is unlocked. That means only T/W based ROMS can be flashed.

In order to root the firmware version you are on (NH3), you have to use this method. Please make sure that you download the files for US (AT&T) Galaxy S4 Active (SGH-I537).

Install SuperSU from chainfire on the play store, open it once it's installed run it and follow the prompts, try to select the option to install the binaries or whatever while the phone is running and select the option that you are NOT on any sort of custom recovery. You can use SafeStrap to make nandroid backups which is what I believe you were asking, but as far as ClockWorkMod, I think it bears repeating:
You have a locked bootloader. There is no way around this, no ifs ands or buts. You simply cannot flash custom ROMs or recoveries. That's it, end of story as far as CM, CWM, AOSP and such things are concerned. That being said there is a sort of recovery called SafeStrap which you can use to make nandroid backups, flash mods and STOCK-BASED roms, but it's not a true custom recovery in the sense that we had been used to, because of this locked bootloader nightmare.
Was hesitant on several other methods I've read over the past day after Towelroot V3 didn't work initially. I followed this step by step and it worked flawless for me on my SGH-I537 KK 4.4.2 NH3. Took about 20 mins being carefull.
