We’re happy to announce that the MOTOROLA ATRIX™ HD will be available in a Developer Edition and also be a supported device in the Bootloader Unlock program. It has the same features and specs as the regular MOTOROLA ATRIX HD, but allows the infinite customization possibilities offered by an unlockable bootloader. Unlocking a bootloader isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s a must-have.

Now that's some bull****.
I don't understand why they won't do it like HTC and let anyone opt in to unlocking their bootloader. I doubt there's any real changes. Just certain IMEIs or serial numbers are able to use the unlock.
When Moto shafted the Atrix users and reneged on updating the Atrix I should've stayed away. I don't understand how they sit down in a room and come up with these ideas and think the customer will not mind.
Moto makes good phones, but they are morons

Based on this announcement, can we ever expect an unlocked bootloader for our already purchased atrixes?
If not I might have to ditch the phone, which is really a shame.
It's still there. I tried to comment similarly though and it wouldn't let me.

AT&T refuses to allow the AT&T branded ATRIX HD to be in the unlock program... Motorola is now releasing an unlockable version and going past AT&T. And somehow Motorola are the morons?

Yea but they could do a lot of things to help us out. Such as leak a jb that unlock bootloader, have "something go wrong" where the bootloader tool now works for us

Yup, we've all been screwed, now we need to find a way to unlock the bootloader without moto's help. also, the only difference between that and the bell edition is that stupid at&t logo at the bottom of it... this is complete crap and such a waste for a phone with so much potential that is now just going to fade away to oblivion.

They are respecting AT&T's wishes. They told everyone beforehand the ATRIX HD would not be unlockable.... expecting otherwise is lunacy.

I dont expect an unlocked bootloader. I just don't like having the option for an unlocked bootloader coming out a month and a half after I got the phone. Also I spoke with moto and asked about the retail version being unlocked and they said "I can not answer that question, as I do not have permission discussing that" so I have never heard motorola say that the Atrix hd will NEVER be unlocked. They may have but I have not heard it. Either way I like this phone, but they should have said MUCH earlier that they plan a dev edition so everyone that wanted the dev edition could wait. Not get stuck with the retail version.

That isn't what they said. They said it is locked, but "our goal is still to provide a way to unlock the bootloaders on our devices to those who wish to do so, more details to come."

I remember reading that several places. It's a shame the Moto can't do right by their customers and support us, rather than bowing to ATT. I understand they need ATT to carry their phones, but there needs to be an option for us. That is what is suppose to be what is great about android, the unlimited possibilities. A dev edition phone is helpful to those that don't already have the phone. I for one will not sell this phone then spend 250-350 more for the dev edition, I'll buy a sammy phone. I believe that since we are the customers that spend OUR money on their product, we should get more support. I for one will not buy another moto device if I don't see a huge improvement in the way the support their customers.

hello every body
first thanks for your great efforts , I am seeking your help again plzzzzz.....
I had droid 3 and stolen from 2 days ago I live in Egypt with GSM network , My Droid 3 unlocked was working perfect here) , now i will get a new mobile , I guess it will be Droid 4 as extend for my beloved stolen phone
When I was looking for it on eBay and Amazon I became so confused , as I found
1-Version Droid 4 locked
2-Unlocked Droid 4
3-Unlocked Droid 4 international use
Now my question is which one will work with my local GSM ? please note that a big price diffident between unlocked and locked one , the locked one is more more cheaper , if I buy the locked can I locked it and works perfect with GSM or have I buy unlocked one ?
Thanks in advance
AFAIK they are all the same. If it has ICS it is unlocked for international use. If it still has Gingerbread, I think you can still upgrade to ICS using WiFi.

The only lock on the Droid 4 is that you cannot use it on American GSM carriers, i.e. T-Mobile USA and AT&T. This lock is irrelevant to you as you are in Egypt, unless you intend to travel to the USA and use this phone.
The unlocked one is being sold by Devices Now. It is possible that they have found somewhat to unlock it for US GSM, though if they have they aren't sharing it with these forums. They are a pretty good seller as they were one of the first to offer this phone pre-flashed to ICS for people wanting to use it on GSM.
That said, if you are happy enough with flashing the phone to ICS yourself, and don't intend to use it in the USA, go ahead and get the cheaper one.
thanks a lot Lum_Uk , but is the flashing is just updating the phone to ICS ? I mean when i bought the cheaper one just i need to update it via wire wireless or i have to do something else ?

To flash ICS all u need is the phone and a wire to connect it to your computer (and possibly a sd card).

Yes just updating it to ICS, though many people have found that the OTA update doesn't always work, so have to flash it the hard way

Just a little update for everybody here. Just because a Droid 4 has Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean doesn't mean it's already unlocked for GSM or international use. Having an Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean ROM means that the phone is ABLE to be unlocked from the carrier. The phone DOES NOT come unlocked with each ROM. You have to call Verizon to get an unlock code or pay for an unlock code through one of the measly online websites. I have much experience with this as I was in the Army for a while and took my US Android phone to Iraq and Kuwait with me. You have to put an unlock code into the device for it to be unlocked. Therefore...I would purchase a Droid 4 that has been unlocked previously. You can tell when you put a different SIM card into the phone,it will ask you for the unlock code or tell you the device is unlocked. Just wanted to clarify that for everybody.

Sorry but this is complete rubbish. It may be true for other phones, but the Verizon Droid 4, once flashed to ICS or JB, will work internationally without any codes, custom ROMs or hacking.
My Droid 4 has never even seen the Verizon network, and I don't have an account with Verizon and no way to contact them to get a code. It just works.
Plenty of others in the same situation on this forum, loads of us are using it on GSM without having to get Verizon's permission.
^^ Truth! There is no SIM lock on any VZW Motorola LTE capable device.
The last Verizon Motorola global device to have a SIM lock was the Droid3, which was a CDMA/EVDO/GSM/UMTS global device.

Hahaha schooled! Not trying to be mean but its generally smart to know what your talking about before u spew bullish out of your mouth and look like an idiot. As lum stated droid 4 isn't locked to Verizon or any carrier. Through build prop tweaks it does work very nicely at that.

Should probably add, since they are in Ohio, that GSM is locked out for US carriers. This isn't locked out with an unlock code but at the firmware level. So far nobody has broken that and unlock codes don't exist. There's a big sticky at the top of the forum with the current progress in dealing with this problem.
Currently the motomaker version of the tmobile moto x doesn't allow bootloader unlocking.

Have they specifically said its not allowed or have they just not added them to the unlockable database yet? I was told it can take some time for them to add them to the database. Also, the unlocking website had problems yesterday and wouldn't unlock any phones period.

The Motorola website says its supported so I'd post on the official Motorola forum and ask for them to look into it.
I just got my motomaker T-Mobile device and I can't unlock the bootloader. That is the only reason I bought the t-mobile version. I think motorola wants us to be stuck with the stupid black and white device.
Ok I thought it was just me but after reading this thread I know it's not. I just got my motomaker tmobile moto x today and no dice on the bootloader unlock. Got on the phone with Motorola support and they are clueless when it comes to the bootloader. I don't get what the difference would be between a colored one and black/white one that would cause any sort of differentiation on the bootloaders.

They will likely be in two different categories so I'm thinking they just haven't got around to confirming that but I would like to find out before the end of my return window. Support does seem pretty clueless.
different model number?
Can anyone confirm the model number for the T-Mobile MotoMaker version and the Dev Edition version? I thought they were one and the same which is why I went with the MotoMaker version...
T-mobile before motomaker was XT1053 - same as dev edition - and had unlockable bootloader. Is it different now?
Reading the forums at the motorola website it appears the they need to enter each phone into the system manually. I hope it is only a matter of a few days and then I can unlock.

If it does happen I could see them pulling a 2nd Gen moto thing. It will be a 'pure' edition and won't be compatible for Verizon
I'm thinking it will be a Pure Edition thing too, which I would love to have since I'm on T Mobile.
I wonder why moto can't/won't release a dev edition ROM for current and provide a way to securely flash it; they could even charge for it and I would be fine with it. All a dev edition changes is the status of the bootloader, correct? There isn't anything physically different between the two devices right?

Was this from Verizon or Motorola? If it was Verizon, I'd put about a 1% confidence rating; if Motorola I'd put a 35% confidence rating.
That being said: I'd sell my Turbo in a heartbeat for a developer version.
Same here I would be surprised if it actually comes out. If so it looks like I would be passing mine out for a good price to pick up the developer edition.

This is why we need a maxx sub forum.
No we do not have a rootable edition. Droid Turbo is the name of the forum, and the Maxx is useless on Verizon, where nearly all Turbo users are with them.
I honestly dont think there will be a developer edition for the turbo on verizon. Heck I really dont believe the nexus will come to verizon just from talking to some reps. They said they nexus to work on the network never said anything about getting it to be bought through verizon. Just stating my opinion. Those of you waiting to get the nexus 6 should be better off going through google or motorola.
So still no developer / pure edition for this beast? I'd pick that up immediately.
EDIT: upon further research, I wouldn't. No reliable data/voice while driving on highways (as the phone does sometimes switch to 3g). What a shame.
Ive unlocked the developer edition of my turbo by pressing the Build number in the about phone settings five times.

Hate to be pessimistic, but don't be so sure. Took a year to find the first exploit when Sunshine devs were actively looking. Best bet is to sell it on Swappa and buy another that does not have the "49" OTA trojan horse Verizon update.

Right. Verizon could easily allow Motorola to unlock the bootloaders. Verizon is the one who demands Motorola lock it down and keep it locked down.
The identical Quark to the Droid Turbo, the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, same FCC ID, same Verizon bands, etc. runs just fine on Verizon with an activated Verizon SIM card and has an easily unlockable bootloader via the Motorola website. It's sort of the "dev" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254, but only comes in 32GB. No 64GB available.
But it's identical in every way. People have even flashed Droid Turbo stock ROM over it.
Point is, Verizon is to blame. They want to own and control your phone, no matter what.
