I am wanting to buy a moto x but I'm not sure which model. does the unlocked model pick up the same bands as the At&t one? Also, is there a difference between the developer and the unsliced models besides maybe the warranty coverage on the developer model? Thanks!

Whatever you do, don't get ATT version, bootloader can't be unlocked and as you can see its one of the last to get updates.
You want to get the unlock version (aka T-Mobile version), it will support all the bands ATT required including LTE. The developer version will also work with ATT and support all the same bands as the unlocked version, and it also let you unlock the bootloader without losing your warrenty. The only negative with the dev edition is you can't customise color and it seem to take a little longer to ship.
I think At&T version is also good
Don't get the at&t version. Can't unlock bootloader. Well, there's a way for 40 bucks or so....but it may not last.

You have 2 choices: AT&T model that may or may not have it bootloader unlocked or T-Mobile model (which is what I have on GoPhone). T-Mobile and Developer Edition are the same except warranty.
However, you need to be aware that T-Mobile version is lacking LTE Band 5 that AT&T model has. It seems that AT&T is not using it in USA now but I am not sure and don't know if this will change in the future.

Yes, you can use OTHER variants with the att network that have unlockable bootloaders. But the motox we get from att can not be unlocked. Same thing with the Verizon. Right?

Doesn't matter if unlocked version doesn't support LTE band 5. AT&T is not going to suddenly shut off the other bands and leave a few hundred millions of their users lack of LTE access because they don't have a phone that support it.
AT&T's LTE Advanced allow speed faster than 100mbps use the combination of band 4 and 17, the unlocked version supoprt both bands. I'm not sure if a specific modem or hardware is required for this "carrier aggregation" to work on AT&T though. Base on the specs, the Moto X have dual antenna (MIMO for LTE), so it probably should work with LTE Advanced, I'm not 100%. If it is missing, then as long as you don't need 100mbps+ LTE download speed, it's not too bad. But overall, it's a non-issue with lacking of LTE band 5.

Hello,
I did some research recently, and this caused a little bit of confusion, so I'll post a quick question:
I'm trying to buy this phone on ebay (since I don't have a US CC card), which one should I get, the T-Mobile or AT&T version?
Requirements:
- to unlock it for Europe GSM
- install CyanogenMod
As of now I was going for the T-Mobile, since I've read it's easier to unlock the bootloader, but now I see that the CM is only for AT&T phones? Or am I mistaking?
Thanks!
It doesn't matter any more. When you purchase from the Moto web site you ask for the GSM version. There is no more differentiation between the T-Mo and AT&T versions. You'll get the XT1053, the former T-Mo version.

Yes, me. I bought a T-Mobile Moto X in November and had to choose my carrier. I bought another Moto X last week and there was no carrier selection, I only had to choose between GSM and CDMA. Both times I received an XT1053 with a T-Mobile SIM in it.

As far as AT&T bootloader goes it is still not unlockable. When it will be? Nobody really knows if Motorola is going to add it to its Unlock program.

Yes, it does. Looks as if they changed it again. I didn't get that selection panel when I bought one a week ago. I guess you can still get the XT1058 model for AT&T. However, if I were buying one I'm not sure why I would order the AT&T model over the GSM model based on the description. I would get the XT1053 anyway.

Maybe they were temporarily sold out of the AT&T model? There is some LTE band on the AT&T model not available on the XT1053, but if I remember that band isn't used currently by AT&T in the USA anyways. People might also want all that wonderful added value bloatware software not on the XT1053 and have the inconvenience safety of a locked SIM.

I am in the market to get either the nexus 5 or moto x. Finally switching off of Verizon and thinking of going to AT&T.
I want to MotoMake my own Moto with the unlocked (T Mobile) option, if i do so, is there bloatware or carrier logo?
And if no, then my next question would be if I used it on AT&T, do I lose LTE? I was told mixed things, that I would and I may not have AT&T 4G LTE.
Because then I may just get the Nexus 5.

You don't lose LTE. You may have to call up AT&T to make sure AT&T lists it as a LTE device, as a few people here have done.

Which upgrade are you taking about? If you mean the 4.4 KitKat, then you'll probably see it soon after you turn on the phone unless it ships with it already. Any subsequent updates you should see soon after T-Mobile releases it no matter the carrier.
If you're talking the two year upgrade for a new phone, then it's two years from the date you sign the contact. Although that doesn't matter if you're buying your device outright.
For the last question, the only devices that have a safely unlockable bootloader are the dev devices, not the MotoMaker ones. You can unlock the bootloader on the T-Mobile phone, but in doing so you will void your warranty. Unlocking the bootloader on Dev device will not void the warranty

I've been doing research and making a lot of calls to both AT&T and to motorola regarding the GSM unlocked(Tmo) version of the MOTO X on the ATT network. Specifically, I have asked ATT about the 850 Mhz LTE band (which is not supported on the GCM unlocked X) and how, If at all, would my service be affected by the lack of this freq. NO one at ATT seems to know anything. I asked moto(numerous times) before I ordered and was told it's the "same phone" or that it "will work". No one seems to be able to tell me specifically if not having this band will adversely effect my ability to get service as I travel the country(US). The phone arrives wed and I'll post again with the results. After I update the APN settings(if needed) we'll see what happens. The only reason I opted for the GSM unlocked version is to be able to use PDA NET + to tether and use another carrier if I desire. (grandfathered unlimited data).
Another question:
Will I need to root the phone to use PDA net, or can u I just use native tethering on the GSM unlocked on the ATT network. ?? Thanks in advance.

No, you have to get an unlock code from Motorola and it voids your warranty.
Why not just get the GSM Dev Ed and keep your warranty after you unlock it?
I bought the Dev edition and inside there's this piece of paper that says that after requesting the unlock code, it'll void the warranty, weird

AFAIK, the 850MHz band is only used for 2G/3G, which is usable by the unlocked X. From my research, I don't see anyone with any plans to use LTE on that frequency.
Short answer: If AT&T or one of their roaming partners has service, you should be fine.

You would not be able to use native tethering unless you pay for the tethering service to the best of my knowledge.
From what I remember of PDA.net from years ago was that it did not need root to function.

There wouldn't happen to be any AOSP roms for the dev X would there? I think I'm going to get an X but I'd really like AOSP
LOL. Moto x is already as pure as it gets almost. Just get one you can unlock boot loader on. So not at&t or Verizon ones. The Dev edition you want will give you more storage and keep your warranty after unlocking boot loader. Then root and get xposed and gravity box. You can customize and get all the custom rom features with those.

I'm not sure why you keep telling people they can't get an unlockable bootloader on at&t and Verizon. Yes but your response to anyone on Verizon or at&t is that they shouldnt buy phones from Verizon or at&t because their bootloaders are locked. You don't mention the developer edition as an option at all for people who are trying to find the phone that best suits their needs. If they come posting about rooting or unlocking their bootloader, then perhaps a moto maker version isn't their number one priority, so explaining that, even on Verizon, they CAN buy a Developer Edition and unlock their bootloader would be more productive then telling them they should've bought a phone from a different carrier. Which by the way, if its not a DE, it will void their warranty to unlock it.
---------- Post added at 07:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:38 PM ----------
To the OP: With all that said; however, seriously the MX is as close as you can get to AOSP without getting a Nexus (which technically doesn't run pure AOSP either). I know dhacker was working on an AOSP build but it had some serious bugs. There's also an Eclipse AOSP ROM.
Those are your options that I know of, but you really only lose the features that makes the Moto X such a great device. There's no real bloat to speak of and the stock ROM is optimized for the X8 CPU and vice versa.
Pretty sure I've mentioned the dev edition in most of my posts. Anyway....aside from the dev edition....no, no one should buy an at&t or regular Verizon phone. Not if they have an account on xda anyway. LOL
Joe schmo....sure...get them...they're still great out of the box.
All that crap involved to root those phones is not worth the trouble..unless you have no other option. They may not even have a way to root down the road. And if someone already has one of them....sell it. And put the cash towards a DE or whatever that can be unlocked.
And...if I didn't mention the dev edition anytime I talked about this....bet you 5 bucks its cause the DE was already talked about by the OP or someone in the thread.

Personally ....I think if someone (who is on xda anyway) doesn't already know about a dev edition ...for this phone...or any other...then yeah....they really need to learn a bit more about this stuff we do on xda. And best not be attempting any phone messing until they do.
Yup....I'm a HUGE believer in reading up and learning about this stuff. Posting anything on xda should automatically mean you searched (especially with Google) and tried to answer your own question.....only if you came up empty would you post. Its a shame that doesn't seem to happen near as much as it should.

For at&t I was referring to not being able to unlock the bootloader. Verizon too. And if sprint can't be sim unlocked, or work on gsm carriers .....I'd stay away from those 3.

We need a sticky that says not to buy a Sprint Moto X for anything other then using it with Sprint. They are different then pretty much all other Moto X's, there are no unlock codes for them.

Sprint use CDMA technology. Send it back and get a refund. You need to use a GSM phone, buy the T-Mobile / unlocked model of the Moto X.

I am wondering if my Sprint LG G4 model LGLS991 will work with Verizon or any other carriers if I unlock the phone?
Wondering the same unlocked mine already.

It will never work, Verzion will never activate a sprint phone and sprint will never activate a verzion phone. Radio's, compatiblity -- none of that matters. Phones are tied to specific carriers (CDMA only) when they are sold and there's nothing we can do to change that.
I guess that answers my question. But I have seen people saying they have used a sprint phone on verizon.
I know sprint phones won't work on Verizon just curious if lte compatibility with t mobile or cricket

If you get it unlocked (by sprint), then it'll work on any GSM carrier outside of United States. Even after its unlocked, it'll not work on Domestic GSM carriers.
Because of the frequencies? There are two types of unlocks domestic and international. Mine is unlocked on both.
Sprint will not do a domestic unlock, unless you have access to their back end system that handles unlocks. (even then I don't think its possible). Have you actually tried using an AT&T or TMobile (US Only) sims in your sprint phone? Even if you have the appropriate radio, the carrier lock will prevent it from working on any domestic network.
I know this from a very reliable source inside sprint.
The most sprint will do for you is unlock it for international use granted you are current on your bill and your account is in good standing.
If you own the phone outright they will unlock for domestic use. New law went into effect in February, also wife works for sprint. It was an annoying process but I finally found someone who knew what they were doing. Yes an at&t sim works in the phone.
What about using a sprint phone on Boost or Virgin? Or possibly using a donor phone as was done before laws changed then changed again?
WOW...

Hate to bust your bubble...but it totally depends on the phone. Lol...Nexus 6 works on Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular, ATT, TMobile...u name it it works. and the sweet thing is the US Cellular version comes unlocked. I put every active sim card in it I have and worked just fine, calls texts LTE. Thanks for the info tho.

You are feeding wrong info to this thread as well. Yes, it will work. Sprint just makes it a hassle to unlock (DSU)....

So you're telling me sprint will activate a verizon phone?
---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------
For those that are still curious go here
http://www.sprint.com/legal/unlocking_policy.html?ECID=vanity:unlock
and here's what you can take away from DSU.
"For inactive devices, customers must contact Sprint Customer Care to request that their DSU-capable device be unlocked and may have to take steps to perform an over-the-air update to ensure the unlock programming has been relayed to the device. Additional validation may be required to ensure eligibility.
Sprint makes no guaranty that an unlocked device will work on another carrier's network. Whether another carrier will accept and activate a device is subject to that carrier's policies and capabilities. Additionally, Sprint devices which the owner has attempted to reprogram or activate on another carrier's network or otherwise altered from its initial programming or settings may not be able to be reactivated on the Sprint network."
So to clarify, even if sprint unlocks your tray, it is more than likely that Verzion WILL NOT activate a sprint phone on their network.

With LTE phones, you don't have to activate anything if you have an active SIM card. Of course, it needs to be unlocked to work on different carriers. My VZW G3 works on Sprint just by popping in a Sprint SIM.
Not true

AT&T Nexus 6 isnt factory unlocked. Lol
Now I remember why I stopped coming to xda.
It's simple: It will never work on another CDMA carrier. Only a select few will work on a domestic GSM carrier; if you have a carrier version that is "unlocked", it will not work on another carrier. It could possible work on Boost or Virgin, since they use Sprint, but YMMV
