I'm tired of so many reviews and people saying that the s5 is lagging. I'm not getting any lag on my s5 or any s5 I've played with. I'm starting to feel that people are just picking on the s5 because it's become cool to hate on samsung. Every little thing about the s5 has been hated on. I'm finding it absolutely pathetic. Am I the only one that feels like this?

I feel the same. Unfortunately, it's what happens to any company that's on top -- they'll always nitpick every little detail. Personally, I haven't experienced any lag either. To some people a few milliseconds of a delay is considered lag and they can't stand it and feel the need to complain about it. What I really find annoying are those who have already switched to a different device, like the M8, but continue complaining about the S5 in these forums. They're either complaining about lag or not having root...it's one or the other...or both.
I can feel the speed compared to my S4. But, it honestly just feels like a refined S4, like a S4.5 but I'm happy either way.
The device does lag... it's annoying. When first setting it up though it's fast as hell but once it's settled in it just becomes a lag fest

People see what they want to see. Lag is perception. For one guy he may see no lag, the next will play with the same device and find a ton of lag.
I have owned every Samsung Galaxy device since the S2, and I can tell you that the S5 has some lag. It is greatly improved over the S4, but it does have lag.
Lag threads happen with every phone release. Not all phones are created equal, so some of the reports are probably true. Touchwiz can create lag in some cases and sometimes there are just bad phones or bad firmware flashes. That being said, I think a lot of it comes from people that have rival phones and they want to make themselves feel better by bad-mouthing the competition.
I wish I could say I agree with you, but not in the case of my device and XP. whatever the word means to you, to me the phone has 'lag'.

Just as silly are threads of people proclaiming if they don't see it then it doesn't exist . And then convincing themselves it's because others are jealous or discriminating because it's made by a certain manufacturer

No lag yet
I personally have not experienced any lag with my S5. Lag can come from many different places like unwanted apps, ATT bloatware! I have disabled all of that stuff. Coming from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the S5 is a speed monster. Not that the Nexus was a terrible phone, but it can have fits of lag...even rooted with a custom rom. Hopefully someone will gain root to our S5 variant soon!
Almost humorous
To all those posting here complaining about "Lag" didn't you do any research before you bought it? didn't you go to the store and test it out? If you don't like the device take it back, you have 14 days to return it. I can sit here and compare this device to every device i have Dev'd for over the years and I can tell you this there is NO DEVICE MADE that doesn't have "lag" somewhere is part of the flaws of being designed and built by the human race, a very imperfect human race i might add. instead of posts like "It does Lag and it's annoying" how about a post with some logcats or detailed step by step methods to recreate the "Lag". As a developer I can tell you this there is nothing more annoying than people pissing and moaning and picking apart something and providing absolutely ZERO proof, ZERO reproducable steps, ZERO help, ZERO willingness to participate in any kind of troubleshooting.
Just my opinion, now that i have called you out on this, got some proof? a logcat? steps to reproduce? what app? did you try that app developers support site?
I have loaded about 100 apps and have multiple email accounts messenger apps and other services running and I get no lag at all. I think some people out there just got ****ty units and they're upset

Phone
Coming from a Nexus 5, while the phone is smooth in almost every other respect, there is absolutely lag when bringing up the app switcher and dialing a number through the phone app. Coincidence that both of these apps are heavily skinned by Samsung? Anyway, I love the phone in every other respect, but I want the phone app and app switcher from the Nexus line.
Yea no lag here. I like the phone better than my note 3. Better reception lte speeds. Good job samsung.

The lag is there, whether you want to admit it or not. There are delays of up to a few seconds for things as mundane as launching the camera or going from the camera to the gallery. Every single Samsung device with touchwiz had had them and people desperate to justify the purchase of their new Samsung phones always try to deny it.
Comparing it side-by-side with my Note 3 that I still have (and it still on 4.3), the Note 3 is actually snappier in some places, which is sad. Touchwiz needs some serious optimization and no amount of denial or fanboyism is going to change that.
Don't get me wrong: I like the phone. But I also don't have blinders on. I have turned off every animation or setting I can find that I think might be slowing the phone and there are still some really annoying delays. Nova fixed some of the launcher delays, but there are others.

This. Lag is there whether the fanboyz want to admit it or not. Many just don't know what lag is. The S5 experience is night and day though compared to the S4. Of course last year we had loki and custom roms which took care of the lag.
Now was the best time to re-do TW completely from bottom up. But they chose not to. This is why everyone on AT&T should just get the TMO version, so they can flash roms and not have to deal with this BS.
I've noticed lag in the gallery and sometimes when switching songs on the lock screen. Both my gallery and music are stored on the external SD card. Not sure if that is what is causing the issue. Coming from an S3 I love the screen, and camera difference and the phone is snappy otherwise. I usually had CM variants on my S3 so it takes some getting used to with the TW
Lag-free here, even in camera/gallery/dialer. While I think touchwiz needs to go...this iteration from Samsung is so much better than previous versions. Now if we could get the carrier bloat off these things they would be perfect.
I love my s5 yea some lag but it's very small the same kinda lad that's in the iPhone 5s but this is the best android phone I have had and I had every flag ship phone from sammy htc and every nexus phone, touchwiz is smooth and fast I just don't like the settings menu but everything else is great I haven't even had the urge to root or install a custom ROM even tho we don't have them yet but that's fine for me I'm truly happy with it so far

Camera and gallery are where I've had the most lag. Like multiple seconds to open the camera or go from camera to gallery. I think my gs3 camera was actually faster. I do love it when it works, and it focuses insanely fast, but that initial run takes a bit long.

All of You with lag complain do you know what is main priority of phone ...hmmmmm make call maybe. I don't see any lag. I think all of what you experiencing is just more in you heads then anything else. This is normal functionality of phone. Every program before opening have to be process first and this take time sometimes. Good you people not working in NASA and not communication with some robots on Mars, you will complain about lag then...

Hey guys, just looking for you opinion on what I should expect when switching from Galaxy Nexus to a Galaxy Note (N700) in terms of performance.
I mostly use the browser so I am most concerned with the browser performance. I have played a bit with one and could clearly see differences in performance compared to the buttery-smooth Galaxy Nexus. I think I could live with these minor shortcomings though, when I've got that HUGE screen. I also think I'd be better off with a bigger screen when I'm typing, because I type a lot, either in the browser or IM'ing with people. This is the main reason I want the Note.
Basically I want to know what you guys miss from your old phone, before the Note.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a Nexus just for the ability to switch between Tmobile and Att. What's stopping me is that I tried a S3 for a month but I kept coming back to the Note. The BIG SCREEN is really nice.
So far I have not found a JB rom for the Note that I like. They all seem so laggy compared to a CM9 rom with Apex and some minor UI tweeaks. Even stock TW roms that people swear a butter smooth seem laggy to me, ok not going between desktop screens but it is slow. If I were in your shoes, I would buy a used Note and give it a go but not be so quick to sell the Nexus.
The really big difference I can think of, switching from Gnex to Gnote is the very fast update that Google makes on the Gnex itself... When Google say that Gnex is their brand of phone to get the latest JB updates.. they really mean it to a tee. You get the best of both worlds that Google can deliver to your phone no question about that.
The only thing that's holding me from selling my Gnote and switching back to Gnex was and is still the fact on the WOW Factor that our phone makes to a lot of people. Whenever I stroll down Portsmouth to bars or drinking with my buddies.. it never fails to amaze me a stranger would right off comment and say.. " hey you got a nice phone there bud!".. I just smirked and smiled back at them.

anyway goin back, yeah the Note still a spectacle to have with.. I mean, it got a nice big screen, faster GPS and I can truly say, I had scribbled my signature once on an online cheque copy and sent it via email... how cool is that..,
Yeah, I'm definitely convinced now that I want it. And I'm ready to say (temporarily) good bye to Jelly Bean We are pretty sure that the Note 1 will be updated to Jelly Bean, right?
Given the scenario...yeah... But my constant rule is.. Never expect anything...if JB comes before this year ends then great! If doesn't, then that's good. At least there's something we can look forward to for early next year perhaps.

Honestly, even if Jelly Bean does not trickle down to Note 1, I'm not bothered. Currently on Rocket ROM, previously used JellyCore v2 and I don't see any features that can sway me over. Even the "huge" upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS was a minor boost to me - only because of the feature to use voice-typing keyboard. I don't really see per-app notification settings or widgets that arrange automatically or Google Now or anything else particularly necessary. OK, "but what about project butter?!" some will say. I will say that on my 4.0.4 Note I don't feel sluggishness to make me want any speed improvements. And no, it's not a Note with the default apps that come with it - it's crammed with apps and I am a very heavy user.
Only gap-less audio playback and offline dictation might sway me over but definitely not a necessity.
I plan to use it with the stock ROM so Project Butter would probably make a lot of difference.
I'm wondering if I'm the only person to be, well, disappointed with the Nexus 4. I have had Google-centric devices before, starting with the Nexus One and I enjoyed using them. I was looking forward to getting my N4 immensely but since it arrived it's just been nothing but ball-ache.
It never really feels as fast as its specs suggest it could be.
If I snap a picture (which is disappointing 99% of the time) I can't send it by clicking the share button and choosing Gmail - it just sits in my outbox, and has with every ROM I've used, including stock.
The device's battery is inconsistent.
It's slicker than an eel that's been soaked in KY, so unless it's in a case or bumper it slips and slides off surfaces and, as we all know, it isn't the most robust smartphone in the world.
I'm holding out hope that KLP will bring things together and get it all moving right, but so far I'm a misery guts...a misery guts who keeps eyeing up the HTC One.
Am I alone?
It is an upgrade for me because I had an htc one v. I honestly think all of the functions are usable (besides recording audio). I was very excited to know the nexus 4 came out, after using the nexus 7 for a couple of months. Although if you have owned a phone with features that worked more efficiently, then yes this device could totally be let down. The battery life could be better(even with custom kernels/roms) I figure i'm gonna sit with my nexus 4 through another generation of nexus before I upgrade.
Yes. And this thread is pointless.

For me its the complete opposite. Ive had every nexus phone an the n4 is by far the best. My phone is blazin fast woth no lag whatsoever no matter what rom im on, camera takes great pics an the battery is pretty good. It is pretty slick cause its mainly glass but a case fixes that. Maybe u got a bad phone or something

I thought it might have been a bad one at first, but the wife's got one and she's had some (minor) issues too. There are aspects of the device that I love, but having had a Nexus 7 and gotten to really like Jelly Bean I was hoping for a lot more from the N4. There just seems to be a lack of veneer in certain areas, like jobs were just sort of finished rather than being polished.
The N4 is the best Nexus device in terms of hardware, sure, but I don't feel that Google has made as much of that hardware as it could have, though that could probably be attributed in some part to it being an enthusiasts device.
As for you, mgymnop and biggiephat (and anyone else who wants to be a plum) , it's a discussion forum for the Nexus 4. I was trying to initiate a sensibl discussion with other users to share my experiences and listen to others. If you don't like it, **** off. There's always dullards like you who have to mince around trying to be superior to other users. No one wants to hear your bull****. Take part or keep it shut.

For me it's quite the opposite. It's easily the fastest phone Ive used yet (that includes most 2012 flagships but nothing like the Xperia Z or HTC One) and I don't see any reason I'd want it to be faster. I don't see any task in the near future that the S4 Pro won't be able to handle, and project butter just makes the experience unbeatable IMO.

Just my opinions on this. At the end of the day it's entirely down to personal preference, which nobody can really change. To the people who said that he is alone, you do realise that that's akin to saying 'green is the best colour and if you don't like it then you're an idiot' right?

Just to clarify, the device is quick, yeah, but it feels that the OS brings it down at times, if that makes any sense? Even though Android is hugely capable and mainstream now it feels at times like it's still a work in progress. Little things like a widget will randomly go tits up, or my keyboard will just stop working, its minor, but frustrating as hell at times.

p.s. with the galaxy nexus i can get 3h 30min of screen on,what about note?
@BurningKoala I had GNexus for some time (app developing) and it's a great phone, but I'm glad I chose the Note over it.
Disadvantages are SO & Hardware optimization (Note's fast and reliable but nothing rivals Nexus) and, maybe, size. If you are considering the Note, size might not be a problem to you. The huge screen is also it's main advantage; for navigation or reading it's just a BIG jump. I really enjoy it. There's a reason why new phones are getting near the Note's screen size...
About battery, it's not as good as the Note II but comparable to that of the GNexus. You'll get trough the day with a lot of use without problems.

You will feel the difference in smoothness if you intend to keep it stock. But coming from a nexus i don't think you will have any problems with CM or AOSP roms, wich are much faster than Samsung Touchwiz.
Go for it and do the trade
You won't regret it
Stay with the Nexus - the support from Samsung on the Note is terrible. The recent Jelly Bean update to the Note is a disaster, it is VERY slow. Laggy everywhere, ugly, unintuitive compared to AOSP.
Want to use the S-pen? Use the S-Note app which lags like hell. When you draw with it then it jumps, also the s-pen is not calibrated properly (you can get a payed app to calibrate it properly)
Want to phone someone? Press the phone icon on your launcher, wait 5s, then get a laggy animation and then wait another 5s for the phone to load.
Want to perform a factory reset on ICS? Do so and after that you will brick your phone. If you flash a kernel then there is a possibility you will loose your guarantee.
Want to get TW 4.2.2? Forget about it, it won't happen.
Want AOSP on it? Sure we have it. Some very good ROM's... it's a shame that Samsung hasn't released the exynos source code EVEN THOUGH they said they would by the end of of 2012. This means many developers are leaving the exynos based devices and we won't get as much support on new android versions. Also we have a broken hwcomposer meaning it has not got projet butter. And you can certainly see this.
Want to watch a movie on your phone? Great! watch how all yopur greys are replaced with pitch black, imagine what a horror movie looks like on our screen now. That is what the balck clipping/black crush issue is with it.
Anything good about the phone? Well... It has a nice screen size, that's it in my eyes.

Wow... seems like we have two completely different phones.
I can't agree with 80% of what you say. Sadly the emmc brick bug is there, and there will never be enough soft&hw support from Samsung to get us all pleased, but hey...
- JB runs GREAT on this phone, the failure is the update process which ruins everything. Do a clean one and is as fast and estable as it should.
- No lag in phone app. 1 or 2 secs, maybe? Surely NOT 5 seconds. Again: JB clean installation?
- Not liking S-Note? Well, S-pen utility sure doesn't end there. Have 5 drawing apps which I just can't imagine myself using them without the S-Pen (calibrated, by the way, with simple rooting and easy tweaking).
- Black clipping problem, just for your information, is also present in the GNexus as it is in every pentile HD amoled screen. Maybe not as hard, but it is there. Check it for yourself.
- Assuming you want to live flashing new roms, you might get affected by the unreleasing of exynos source code. I never got affected by it, most surely will never be.
- And then, there comes the big screen: Gaming, browsing, typing, reading, showing pictures, watching videos... it is like half a tablet in your everyday life, which in terms of use to me changes EVERYTHING.
Don't get me wrong, you have all the right to be unhappy with any device in the world, but those words seemed like facts when they are not really that objective. As you can see, I didn't say Note was better than GNexus: I just offered my perspective, which is a really pleasant one.

Trust me, I wouldn't be too surprised if I has flashed over 300 times on my phone. Maybe even 500. I know how to perform a full wipe and proper install, also I NEVER have a bloated device. i try to keep as little apps as possible (usually about 15 user apps, nearly all from google). What did I realise after about 3 days of use? The phone got very slow and laggy. Not even restarts helped.

Clear the phone out of the memory, then you will see how slow it is. With me it is usually not in memory because I don't use it that much.
Certainly 5s after a clean install, add another 5s after you have installed a couple of apps.

Although rooting is very easy on this phone, we should have had an already calibrated S-pen. As for alternative apps then yes, they do work. My favourite is Papyrus. However the samsung apps are real memory and CPU hoggers. When I was making my own ROM (Bare Bean) then the S-apps probably took up at least 150Mb... and I ask, on what? Yes, the screen is nice. I must admit that... however that is one of the few things Samsung couldn't break after time with software updates.
I don't know, so many flashing overwhelms me. But I'm in Philz rooted stock spanish 4.1.2 LSZ, without removing any bloatware or anything touched (only rooted to calibrate s-pen and opened multiwindow to any app) and I can assure you my Note goes fluid, with no battery drains and there's no 5 second lag ANYWHERE. No restarting needed.
Sometimes, I get the feeling that removing too many - apparently harmless - stock rom apps and system files, causes unknown side effects. I really encourage rom developers, though - and I will not be praising Samsung work - BUT there's a lot of testing involved in stock roms that always make me more confident about them. In every phone I had, maximum estability and less problems have always been stock roms. Only talking about my own experience.
Good thing about Nexuses: Stock roms are always clean android, directly from OS developer.

Alternative apps from google play take up 10x less space offering better functionality and speed.

You should change YOUR Galaxy Note with his Nexus then

I haven't seen much threads like this so I think people seem quite okay with samsungs Lollipop, but for me it seems to be even worse than Kitkat. Let me mention some things.
Wifi;
Nothing seems to work even worse than Wifi for me. I've changed some settings on the router, changed the auto change from 2.4 gHz to 5 to manual, yet I get this problem that the internet is terribly slow at some moments, and it stays there for like 30 minutes(Downloading a simple app from the play store like apex goes with 20 kb/s).
Functionality;
Everything pops in place as I was used to touchwiz, yet I miss the ambient display alot! Its the function that was very usefull on the stock Lollipop update, but yet Samsung decided to not add it to their software.
Performance;
Even while Antutu tells me my phone improved with the update, I can't see it back. some things just seem to be sluggish at some moments. Like the well known recent button problem which I don't really want to discuss as it is known. But also just opening the menu just seems to go with around 15-20 fps for me(Which just looks sluggish).
Now that might just be Eye candy, but I've installed "Sky Force" from the play store, and even that lags when too much happends in the game.
Batterylife;
From 7:00 AM to 19:00 PM I loose around 60-65% battery, I use my phone as a media player, got it connected with a Moto 360 and sometimes I play a game on it, check Facebook. Just the normal stuff I guess, yet I think this is way too much for my daily use, Battery stats pulls it on the Android system, and BBS doesn't seem to give clear answers to me, as there are crucial wakelocks happening which cannot be frozen.
The looks;
Now this is just something personal, as Touchwiz always had the look of a toy in a store with a big red button on it saying "Try me", I still do not prefer its new looks. Everything looks flat and all those colours just make me have a rainbow phone or something. Simply do not like it, but again; its personal.
Now where am I comparing this with?
As I've always used the note series, I remember my Note 2 being a beast of a phone, then after that the note 3 was impressive too.
When I had the Note 3, all I heared from people was the device being slow cause of bloatware, which never were a problem to me honostly. In these days Samsungs seems to try to improve that but I can simply not see it.
Also I've installed CM12 on the device, and when I see how butter smooth everything runs, switching from task to task, opening the menu. The expirience just enchances my idea of android. Yet it causes me to be limited with functions I cannot use.
Conclusion;
I always have thought that Samsungs software was ment to work better with their devices, but now I expirience the opposite. CM12 seems to work better for me, but yet I want to make use of the pen, pop up window and some s-health features.
So how do you think about the difference, I am curious how others think about my statements, and how you expirience CM12 <---> Touchwiz.
That's just the love hate relationship that most of us have with touchwiz. Love the extra features it offers over stock but hate the bloated memory hog with inconsistent performance it can be with even the most powerful hardware running it.
My Moto X 2014 lollipop is far smoother, faster, vastly more memory efficient allowing more apps to be open without refreshing content - and this is despite having slower processor, less ram and earlier version of Lollipop (5.0 v 5.0.1)
So yeah touchwiz annoys me, but as you say it offers some great additions over stock android that make you often overlook much of its uglier moments.
My Personal Opinion On This Thread That I'm Not Intrested In Buggy Lollipop Firmware I'm Happy With KK

It's indeed strange this "update" release. I updated my n910f through Odin to Lollipop and also think to go back to KK again but for now I'm gonna keep Lollipop a little more and hope Samsung briefly release a "definitve" Lollipop update.
Help

I think there is no release of it for the N910C, just for the N910F(international)

Exynos variants very early builds are being developed by RaymanFX, but we're still far from daily-driver level.
KK is stable for me. I will wait for few more months until bugs have been sorted out.
Note 4
So I got myself a shiny S6 at launch. I was upgrading from a Nexus5, which, if it weren't for positively atrocious battery life, I'd likely still be using. I have to say, performance-wise, using the S6 was underwhelming. I expected that 'wow this phone is FAST' feeling that I've gotten with every other phone upgrade I've gone through. Then I got used to it and went about my merry way...
Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I decided to repurpose my Nexus5 as my Home Theater remote using a Harmony Hub. I charged it, turned it on and was once again reminded at just how snappy the thing is. Made my S6 feel like a Prius. What I then realized was the the entire reason for this is TouchWiz. In comparing side-by-side, screen transitions, animations, etc. in vanilla Lollipop are either much faster, or simple not there. Samsung tries to add 'flair' and 'gee whiz' stuff which gives the user a false sense of sluggishness. So I fixed it...
TL;DR
In developer options - To get there, settings/about device, and tap build number 7 times. You'll then be a 'developer'. You'll then be able to access dev settings. From there, you'll find 3 options for 'animation scale'. Reduce this setting to either 0.5x or off. Sit back and marvel at how fast your phone ACTUALLY is. I also use Nova Prime launcher which has animation speed settings as well. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.
I think I'll leave my transitions as is, phone is plenty fast, coming from rooted LG G3.

I have to agree, coming from many "fast" phones like the Nexus series and HTC One series, I don't see any "slow down" from Samsung on my S6. Blazing fast.
To each their own. Don't get me wrong, the phone is blazing fast at tasks, but the task switching animations, etc., are very noticeable to me. With the setting at .5x, it's still clean, but quicker to move around the OS.
My animations are all set to 0 and its blazing fast.
Unfortunately turning them down to 0.5 or 0 makes everything feel very abrupt and not fluid. The 1x makes the animations and transitions flow very nicely!
I came from a N6 to this device & honestly they are neck to neck. The one better thing is the damn camera. If on google would step up there game & would have put in one heck of a camera I would have sticked to my shamu.
I opened and read this thread expecting to see something regarding data speeds and Samsung modems. I thought the Android animation scale options were widely known...guess not. And yes I say Android because it is not Samsung. The HTC phones and LG phones (the only others I have checked) are also set to the default of 1X.
The S6 has been the fastest phone I have used, hands down.
Nexus phones maybe stock android but I find them pretty hideous and hate that they don't have capacitive buttons.
Calling a Nexus phone a Ferrari and and S6 a Prius is an exaggeration. Btw the camera on the Nexus doesn't compare with the S6 (which might arguable be the best camera on any smart phone right now), so the point of this thread is pretty useless.
Go with what you like and enjoy your Nexus 5.
I would say it is more like Nexus=Lotus and GS6=BMW i8. The lotus has no extra features, not even A/C or a radio so they can save on wieght. On the other hand the i8 has the power of a Ferrari but saves in energy with all the bells and whistles. I like all the bells and whistles on the GS6. Finally they got a cpu that can handle all the extras. It is for me the best I've used yet.
Here's a tip, sell your S6 and use your nexus 5.

First thing I do after flashing or getting a new device is turn on dev options and kill all animations. Anything that appears to make things slower is bad. When I close something I want it GONE instantly. Ditto for PC and Mac. Leave the silly animations for cartoons and kids.
Stock Android is just better than Touchwiz in general. I love my S6. My battery life is phenominal. But damn I miss Cyanogenmod. I fired up my S4 and it does transition faster and smoother than my s6 does so OP has a point. Mind you this doesn't translate to processing power because in that regard my s6 completely demolishes my s4 but when an app is already open and loaded on memory my s4 is faster.
Please lawd please I'm begging you dev gods bring us CM12. I've been reading things about Cyanogenmod not liking exynos. If that's the case and they decide not to make CM for the s6 I'm giving this phone up when jump comes back around in six months.
i have apex launcher running with animation set to .05 everything smooth

Yep, that's the same trick that Apple uses too. Short duration animations or better yet, none at all, equal a faster (Appearing) Os. But that's just visual appeal. Luckily like anything on android, we can change that!
X2 on the need for Cm (or other aosp, I loved paranoid android myself) on this phone.
