So I've got two SCH-I800s
One's working fine (battery's a little low)but has some cracks in the screen.
The other is in perfect condition but dead (internal storage problem, won't boot, SD booting not working either).
Question is: can I somehow bring the good parts of the two together? Can I take the internals from one and put them in the other? I'd rather avoid replacing the screen because of the methods I've seen for doing so being pretty complicated. I am good with taking devices apart and have been doing so for some time, I just wonder if there's an easy way to do this?
Thanks!!
Just google how to replace the screen and digitizer. U think fixya has a youtube video ob how. This will show you how to take them apart. Then just switch the motherboards and put it back together. Just go in through the back cover.

I've seen that video. But what he does is what I was avoiding. I was hoping it wouldn't involve removing the screen from the tablet because then I have to get new adhesive, the tool to take the screen off, etc etc. I was hoping somebody might now if it's possible to just get the insides out and put them in the non broken screen tab I have. Does that make sense?
Is it possible that if I remove the logic board and leave the screen and it's board intact I can just take the actual tabley logic board to the other tablet and it wil run fine? They are both identical SCH-I800s.

Thats what I was talking about. Go in thu the back. Just stop when you get the motherboard out. No need to remove the digitizer and screen. Then put in the other board. Hook up all the connectors, screws etc. The only thing is the meid numbers wont match.

I know that with my Android phones, I always read that if you swapped parts the software can have trouble communicating with the components and it can cause problems. I will never be selling or sending back these tablets for warranty or anything. Do you think I have anything to worry about? Any possible complications that can arise?
I dont think you should have a problem. I swapped the digitizer with no problem. The other stuff- on/off, volume, etc are just controls. Should have no effect. For the meid, just take the one off the back of the tab. Make sure you copy it and keep it safe. Just to be sure l later.

You can replace a motherboard but can't handle root?
replacing the motherbord shouldnt affect the actual software so yes im pretty sure you will still be rooted.
to be honest though i would just get a new phone because i know motheboards arnt cheap.
well, I did get a new phone a while ago. got the evo 4g. but this hero just keeps bugging me, so kind of more for fun, I want to give this a go. I already ordered the motherboard on ebay. 30 bucks plus shipping. I saw a video on youtube and replacing it looks fairly simple. It is going to take a couple of weeks for it to get here, but will post back and let you know how it turns out.

No, you will need to root again. The android software is stored of the motherboard. So putting in a new one will be like getting a new phone, minus new parts on the outside.
If the motherboard you bought is used, then whatever the previous user had on it, then that's what you would find. Hope this helps.

ha proved me wrong lol. either way rooting shouldnt be a problem just z4 that bad boy and itll be up and running in no time
ah, that makes sense now. well it is a new motherboard. found two sellers on ebay both of which have a small supply for 30 bucks each. okay so I start over once I have it. many thanks
I know it has been a while, but just to finalize, got this hero working like a charm. changing the mother board was the easy part. the trick was finding the right sprint store that would get msl code and make everything match up between the new mother board and the phone. they have to actually change codes in their data base or you will not get service.
Damn, you should have asked -- I have a couple extra heroes from friends who move on.
wow, thanks. You know it was one of those things that you brake and get some redemption when you fix it.

So basicly, I dropped my galaxy s 9000 in a drainwater hole next to my house and had to get it out with my shovel. I did so and obviously because it was raining, it got water damaged and also has dirt inside of it.
Since it was in there for around and hour with the battery still in while I tried to get it, Its pretty hopeless to try to fix it or send it to repair, particularly because I'm upgrading to SGS3 in a month or two.
I want to sell it on ebay for spare parts use but I want to first whipe all data off the phone, because it includes many documents like my paypal account history and emails on gmail. The problem is, if I try turning it on, the usual white text "Galaxy S GT-I9000" text shows up and in several seconds turns off. Even if I try booting into recovery mode, I just dont have enough time to hit erase all data.
So is there any way to whipe all the data off of it other than microwaving/purging it?
Thanks
Bump please help guys
I suggest you to put it in straight sunlight with battery taken out
hit thanks if I helped

I opened it and its completely corroded already and it would cost far greater than the phones currently worth to fix.
Anyway, as I asked, is there any way to erase all data off of it if it doesn't turn on for more than 5 seconds?
Identify and desolder Flash IC (or IC-s if there are multiple).
No problem if these are TSSOP-s (they usually are) - this can be done with soldering station and soldering braid.
If these are BGA-s then use heat gun and something to pick up the (very hot) IC.
Update: just thought that if you don't have time/tools to make it then there are 2 options:
1) just disassemble the phone, purge motherboard, sell what is left.
2) Find some mobile phone / computer / electronics repair shop where they can remove and destroy these Flash IC-s with you seeing it.

Before I do that though, is there actually any way I can possibly delete all data without destroying the hardware (If it isn't yet destroyed by the waterdamage ofcourse)
I know no way to destroy data in Flash memory without damaging other phone components or without disassembling if device itself is not operational.
Suggestion at the moment is:
* Wait for more feedback from forum members. Clearly there's a lot more experienced members than i here
* Meanwhile try to get phone as dry as possible - it may happen that it boots for longer time e.g. tomorrow
Indeed. Stick it in a bag of rice until you get a better idea

I will try doing this. I took the phone to my friend who used to repair mobile phones, and he kindly wiped the components with WD-40 on a toothbrush for free. He says that theres hardly any chance it'll work but it may eventually allow me to boot up for longer than 10 seconds which will be enough time to flash the memory.
Hey guys, my old and trusty galaxy S amoled screen shattered somehow, and I do not want to repair the phone as who knows the internal parts might die anytime?
Does anyone know of other uses for such a phone? Or is replacing the screen the only way out to make full use out of it?
It's interesting to see a phone model 2 years old still has so much development going on

If you're handy with things like this, a replacement screen is about $80, which isn't too bad. Pretty big pain to do it though. On the other end of things, if you're half decent with a linux terminal (or willing to learn a bit), ADB will be your best friend here.
EDIT: Also unless you mess something up internally or do something really wrong flashing it, it won't just die on you.

Hi, I had the same issue few months ago. At that time, I found that you can buy a replacement display on e-bay, but most users claimed it was not an AMOLED display.
Also, in my case, I was not able to connect to the phone by ADB.
For those reasons I then decided to send the phone to the Samsung repair center. The only problem was that they wiped the phone (they did a factory reset). However, I didn't loose any picture I have saved on the phone. The phone is happily working and running CM10 nightlies

marco
I have a broken touchscreen (still works but is badly scatert)
So can i only replace touchscreen?
So not can i just put a new lcd with touchscreen on it. (I have amoled one is it posible to put lcd on it?) Because i know amoled is a pain to.findd parts.
hey guys, so i have the LG Optimus 2X, P990-HN, i'm with Fido (doubt it matters) anyway, there was a large crack in my screen, and i just dealt with it for a long time, but eventually the glass FELL OUT, the rest of it worked, but i couldn't leave it, so i ordered a new Digitizer from DealExtreme.com and it was about $50 CAD, reviews tell me it worked, googled it nobody else had complaints, so i doubt it's a fake or anything, all the way from singapore, i put it in and i can see everything clearly through it, beautiful, but zero response from the touch screen. none at all in any area, what could it be? also, if i take the screen out to re-seat it do i need to apply heat and completely remove it, and if so will that make it garbage and need a new one? will the heat kill it? i'm quite upset because it costed 50 bucks and took a long time to get here, and i finally put it in and it doesn't work, all help appreciated!
Have you tried the service center ? One probable way to check if the new one really works is to connect the old one back and see if touch works.. You might have accidentally pulled out some other connection .. just my guess

yes i ordered a digitizer though, replace it and it didnt work, what the hell could it be i just dont understand, and i can do it myself but i don't know the problem
I have done this twice with OK success. It is important to connect all electronics correctly - check YouTube for guides. But even if you did all correct be digitiser might be defect. Either you being it to service centre or redo digitiser install. Maybe, you can check before closing the phone, and if not working correctly check with your old digitiser. Heating and reheating should be no problem (although nothing is without risk). Good luck.

hey, thanks for helping me out. i think the digitizer MUST be defective, i took it apart and put the old SHATTERED one in, and it works FINE, aside from you know... being shattered. then i plugged the other NEW one in, and no response from the touchscreen. the ribbon wire looks to be fine, the connection to the logic board was fine, everything was hooked up right (or the other one wouldn't have worked right?) so if i cant SEE anything wrong with a digitizer, what could even be wrong with it, it MUST be defective, but what can really be defective about a digitizer? what can go wrong on something with so little to break...?
Don't know what is wrong, but it must have been defect before you got it. Try to return it to the seller/shop as soon as possible and get your money back.

Hi, thanks for looking into this thread.
I've used my HTC M7 during wintersports, where it got a little bit wet sometimes. The phone would only charge when turned off, so I put some WD40 on the mini-USB port and it worked fine again. Same problem week later, tried the same solution, but this second time I'd blown WD-40 under the screen..
So I decided to pull out the screen, ended up with the digitizer, and several screen parts in my hands. So I decided to order a whole new front, and a logic board(for USB port) from China, and put the existing parts over in the new front.
I did this yesterday, and tested the phone without putting the back cover back on yet. The phone worked like it had never worked before: awesome speed. I noticed however, that the speaker didn't work. I díd get sound out of my earbuds using my headphone jack, so it had to be the speaker.
I was so glad that the phone worked, as I do not have any knowledge whatsoever about hardware and I just repaired a phone with a 1.0/10 repairability score (iFixit). In my joy I thought that perhaps refixing a connection cable might do the trick. Now the horror: I touched the connection between the battery and the mainboard with a screwdriver, while it was still turned on.. I saw a sparkle, and since then the phone won't start. (And later I found out that the speaker didn't work because there was no pressure on it. When pressing on the phone, like the back cover would do, it would produce sound).
I've tried completely disassembling and reassembling the phone but that didn't work.
All it does is this loop when I hold the power button for 5 seconds:
- Flickering home/return button
Then when I release the power button:
- The phone vibrates once
- Then it keeps making a startup/boot sound (with about 6 seconds intervals) but the screen stays black, untill it has drained all energy from the battery
When I press the power button for a couple of seconds during this loop, it starts at the beginning of the loop again.
What parts in this phone are probably broken? The main board, or the battery? Both? Or possibly more?
I was just an idiot to touch a live circuit with a screwdriver..
Thanks!

Never put oil on electronics! Clean the port using a Electro contact cleaner and once cleaned you can wash it using a contact enhancer" The only time you want to use WD40 on electronics is to remove surface corrosion. Part must then be cleaned of that oil.

Another reason to use electro contact cleaner. This solution evaporates so fast, like 10 times fast than rubbing alcohol. Even if you had blown contact cleaner under the screen, it would have done nothing.

Probably the main board. Doesn't worth it imo. You can get a new M7 for like 150-250$ on ebay.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed, I think I will just buy another product.
But just for the sake of fixing it (not for net present value of the project), I think I will try to buy one with a broken screen or something from the Dutch Craigslist alternative. However, the M7 stores data internally. Where does it store that data? Can I remove a data chip from my (now broken) M7 motherboard, and replace it on a working motherboard?
Thanks! :good:

Data is stored on the emmc chip and is not removable. You can not access your data with the phone not booting.
If buying a used phone for parts, make sure it have a clean imei first. Imei # is tied to the motherboard so if you take a motherboard from a blacklisted imei phone and put it in your phone, you won't be able to connect to any carrier network.

The IMEI number is a unique identifier. If a phone is declared lost or stolen or is linked to unpaid bills. its imei will be blacklisted. The blacklist is international and every carriers have access to it. If the phone is blacklisted, all carriers will refuse to active the phone on their network. The IMEI # is stored on the emmc chip so its tied to the motherboard. If you change motherboard of your phone, your IMEI number will change to the new one linked to that motherboard. So before buying a phone to swap motherboard, make sure the IMEI is not blacklisted. Ask the seller first and then you can check if the IMEI is valid. If the seller can't provide the IMEI, don't buy the phone.
