Rooting an nTelos Moto X

I just got my Moto X. Much better than my really old Droid 3, gonna miss the slide-out keyboard though.
Like a dummy, I updated my phone to KitKat. (4.4.something) Thanks to nTelos being a pretty small carrier, nobody has a 4.2.2 file for me to flash back, therefore, I am stuck with an unrooted Moto X with no way to downgrade.
I'm pretty sure I'm a lost cause, but is there any way to root? I was considering flashing another carrier's sbf onto it, but then I risk bricking it.
Thanks for the help,
Giggybyte
edit: Read around the Moto X forums a bit. It's apparently not possible, and there's even a large bounty for whoever can figure it out. My bad, should've searched first.
If your Moto X was built in 2014 this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177) can give you information on who to contact to unlock the bootloader and thus open up the possibility for root. It'll run you $45, but if you are really committed to root, that's the only option with 4.4.2 (as well as any future version).

What is the model number of your nTelos Moto X?
I just SIM-CRACKED the Sprint Moto X for use on any GSM carrier.
Its not bootloader-unlock, but it might help you use a different carrier, if that is your goal.
My method might should work for you. Myself and others are also very interested in knowing if it works for the nTelos X, and additionally what the model number is. Please advise. I believe it should be XT1049: is that correct?

[Q] VZW Moto X Unlocked Bootloader?

I'm stuck on Verizon but I absolutely need a phone with an unlocked bootloader for what I'm trying to accomplish.
From what I can tell the Moto X seems like a good option. Unfortunately, what I've read seems to imply that the Verizon version's bootloader cannot be unlocked. Is that correct?
So other than getting the developer edition of the phone (which is obviously much more expensive), do the Verizon Moto Xs from the online motorola store have an unlocked bootloader or are they the same as one purchased from Verizon?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find a clear answer. Would really appreciate if someone could please clarify.
Thanks

Get the Developer Eidtion for Verizon. I think it's on sale ending today. There's a coupon code floating around I saw that will take off $100 dollars or so.

WHen it comes to the Moto X for Verizon there are 3 ways to get it... Developer Edition (on Moto's Dev Edition web site), Moto Maker edition (Moto's web site), or Verizon store (aka Retail edition).
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon have their bootloaders LOCKED. Motorola does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code. The only way to unlock it, would be if the Chinese Middleman (see thread in general section) is still available and selling codes, but he hasn't been as reliable lately (some users have received wrong code, some have received message back saying no code available).
They use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The Moto Maker and Retail are basically the same, except available as 16 or 32 gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking is not possible via Motorola. The only possibility is IF the Chinese Middleman will sell the code.

[Q] Thinking of buying the 2013 Moto X

Hi,
I currently own a Nexus S, customized with AOSP Kitkat ROM. While this is a wonderful device, I think the time has come to change it. 512MB of RAM is just way too low for KitKat and newer apps that are RAM hungry. However, I don't like big phones. I like my Nexus S because it is small and fits everywhere. My brother has a Nexus 5 and it just doesn't fit in my hand. The screen is beautiful, but it is too big for my hand.
I was passing by a carrier store last week and came accross the Moto X and Moto G, both last generation. Both are the same physical size, even though the screen on the Moto G is 4.5inches and the X is 4.7. They fit pretty well in my hands and I love their design. It is also a great thing that it is running nearly stock Android with Motorola applications.
I know the Moto X isn't the most powerful phone on the market, and this isn't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a nice upgrade with features that I like and a device that feels good in my hands.
Is the device worth it ? Are the Motorola extra features (Moto Assist, Active Display, Touchless controls) working fine ? I can easily imagine my Moto X docked in my car and me asking it for directions or change songs. I can't do that with the Nexus S; it is way too weak in power.
Do you know if I have to keep the stock launcher to get those features ? I really enjoy Apex.
How's the battery life ? I am usually not power hungry as I don't play games on my phone or even watch videos. I listen to music, check rss feeds and social networks.
Lastely, what would you change to the (old) Moto X ? From the reviews that I have read, I understand that the screen isn't incredible, but would you say that it is an issue ?
Thanks for any input
Neo.
Honestly, you would be better served reading through general and Q&A sections and reading the threads that have topic titles you're curious about.
You will get much more info than you will from this thread
Just my opinion. ?
The screen is pretty good as far as I can tell. Better in direct sunlight compared to LCD screens which I had cup my hand to be able to read clearly. That said, the moto features work but I don't make use of them. And you can use any alternative launcher if you like; I use action launcher btw. Is it worth the money? That's up to you. I paid $324 for the 32GB version and it is worth what I paid for it.
What carrier? If vzw?
Get a Maxx if you can cheap enough. Much brighter display
Was in the same situation as u 2 months ago, coming from a droid 3. Was looking at moto x and maxx, but battery was a huge plus for me, and went with the maxx, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Although, it is a 5 inch screen.

I am in Canada, so the device costs more. In fact, I can't really buy the device anymore in Canada and would have to import it from the US. More of a hassle, but may be worth it. I could get the 16GB XT1058 for about 300$USD shipped.

I am currently with Koodo (Telus) in Canada, but I would buy an unlocked device or unlock it myself. Rogers and Fido had the Moto X as an exclusive here in Canada. You couldn't buy the Moto X anywhere else than these carriers store. So if I wanna get a Moto X on Koodo, I must unlock it anyway. As for the Droid Maxx, I've read many times that the radio isn't working properly in Canada. I would have to dig a bit.
On another note, I was looking at how to root the Moto X and it is much more complicated than my Nexus S. If I can get a Dev edition it would be easier but they are hard to find (and not cheap). Gotta love Nexus devices for that reason !
You can buy an X from carriers still. Mine was 18 bucks to sim unlock. (Rogers phone and I'm on Telus)
And there's many used on kijiji.

You can also unlock the Rogers version and root easily.

Really ? I've done some stores and no fido or rogers had stock on Moto X, although they had it in display.
So you have the XT1058 ? According to the Moto X guides thread, how complex rootinng is, depends on what version of Android is installed. Do you run KitKat or JellyBean ?
The best buy in the last couple of years. I definitly recommend it. I always was the type of person, who felt like having to fiddle a lot with the phone, to fulfill my needs. (I came from LG devices). I always rooted and installed custom ROMs. But believe it or not, I still dont feel the need to root or install a different Software, since the stock ROM runs amazingly great on my phone. I also had the G in my hands, but the X display is way better. Camera... Well it is not the best, but also not as bad as many said. Battery is amazin. And although I already had phones with more capacity, this one lasts longer by far. I also listen to a LOT of music and the phone still gets me through the day quite easily. But there is one thing I would consider. The new 2014 X. For me personally, the screen is too big, but maybe it will be just right for you? And yeah it does not have killer specs, but the phone is definitly smoother than other flagship phones, which often laag due to the extra ("great"/"special") custom UI.
Those are my 2 cents. Hope it helps a bit

Yup, xt1058. Unlocked on moto site, then just used fastboot for custom recovery and rooted. Done. No different than rooting a Nexus. Simple.
I did all that in jelly bean, but it's no different on KitKat.
I don't remember the site I used to unlock Sim, but they're a dime a dozen. I think it was cellularunlocker. Or something like that.
I did have to try the moto site the night I got it, and the next day after work before it worked. The unlock site is glitchy.

OK thanks, I'll check the Moto website. If a get a XT1058 from the US or from Rogers/Fido, I guess I can root it using Moto website and it will work on Koodo. Rooting shouldn't affect the bands and carrier. From what I know, AT&T and Telus/Koodo uses the same bands.
The Complete Moto X Guides/Information Thread got all me confused with downgrading from KitKat to Jelly Bean and flashing the 4.2.2 camera app. Is the downgrade procedure only for Locked Bootloaders (which the XT1058 isn't) ?
Thanks everyone for your feedback yet. I think it will be a device as good as my Nexus S, if not better
$324 seems really high to be the current value.
If the 2014 Moto G is selling for $179 Brand New, what do you think a used 2013 Sprint Moto X is worth now ????

Downloading was going from 4.4 to 4.2.2. That's gone as of 4.4 2. No more downgrading. Not without great risk.
There's no Telus moto x... I don't think. Was only Rogers and fido . Maybe I'm wrong. I got a Rogers one new, but off a guy. I just unlocked it to use on Telus. Maybe there's a telus model... But I didn't think so.
But remember, whatever model number it may be, an AT&T phone can't be unlocked. Avoid getting that if you can.

I am looking at new phones, so this is why it is a bit more expensive. I don't know if you are in the US or CA, but the Moto G will sell for about 225$CDN here and the new Moto X will for around 450-500$ if not more. Cellphones in Canada are more expensive than in the US. Pretty much like anything else on the market...

No there was never any Moto X on Telus or Koodo. It was a Rogers/Fido exclusive. Sorry, I think my post was misleading.
An AT&T phone cannot be unlocked ? I think since a month or 2, this isn't true anymore.

I thought you were talking bootloader unlocked, which AT&T can't. Yes, Sim unlock sure.
But you risk not having root. Depending what version it comes with and whether you're willing to pay 45 to bootloader unlocked, if you're on the list for the China Middleman.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice that AT&T has a locked bootloader. I thought either locked or unlocked bootloader was model dependant (XT1058,60,etc) and not carrier dependant. Let the search continue. My best bet would be to find a Rogers one

Any downside to Moto Maxx vs Droid Turbo?

Is there any downside to the Moto Maxx (intnl) version of the Droid Turbo? (I use t-mobile)
No. With Moto Maxx, you can unlock boot loader and root. Droid Turbo, you cannot. No downside.
I didn't root, so I like the absence of Verizon bloatware on the Maxx.
I was waffling and wondering about a One M9, but just got a Maxx this week, using on T-Mobile (thanks to ChazzMatt and others advice). Fantastic phone...the ONLY thing I miss is the IR Blaster (on my G2 and M7).

If you can find the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, sold by other (smaller) CDMA/LTE carriers, yes it will work on Verizon. The XT1250 has CDMA and Verizon's LTE bands. It's identical to the Droid Turbo, even the same FCC ID, but branded as "Moto Maxx".
The international Moto Maxx XT1225 will not work on Verizon. It's it's GSM/HSPA/LTE only without Verizon's LTE bands. I own two XT1225 and am running one AT&T GoPhone.
Both Moto Maxx models have unlockable boot loader and ability to root.
Thx. I guess I should have done more research before committing to the Turbo. Other than the lack of root, I really do love my Turbo.

Sorry, it does mean it's better because it gives you more options if you want to root and install custom software. You're on XDA.
Not sure why you are mentioning the test version of Lollipop. I didn't. I'm not running it and has no relevance to this discussion at hand. I'm talking about unlocking bootloader and rooting -- so you can have Root Browser, Adaway, Titanium Backup, etc. All the great apps that need ROOT. Like your user name, so you should know how important that is.
Also for someone SPECIFICALLY asking about T-mobile, with the XT1225 Moto Maxx you don't have to even uninstall all the useless Verizon bloatware.

and the Moto Maxx XT1225 has LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17 -- so re-sale value is greater. For AT&T and T-mobile. Has ALL the AT&T bands, even LTE band 5 is not mentioned in the "official" specs.
And that answer doesn't even address TWRP recovery and titanium backup.

Dude I am not going to get in a pissing contest with you. To you the maxx may be the best but to someone else the turbo is better. It all depends on the user. To say one phone is better because it has a unlocked bootloader and root is quite ignorant to say the least. Have u tried the turbo? if not you cant compare it even though they may be similar. Have a good day
I brought the test up because the majority of maxx users on here have flashed that. I for one love root, and flashing. But again there are some that could care less.

I'm not getting into a contest either, but I just can't believe you are saying a phone with IDENTICAL hardware specs that can be unlocked, rooted, with TWRP recovery (as well as Titanium backup) is not even a shade better than the other phone that does not have those ADVANTAGES. And saying this in XDA, a developer's forum.
For a person with T-mobile, both have the LTE bands 2, 4. So no difference there, but all the other stuff is different.
But I"ll leave it there. To each his own.

Lets back up a bit from what i said in my last post. I have a nexus 6 and a droid turbo. I chose the nexus 6 for my daily driver because it has root and the works. I love rooting and custom roms. I am bringing this up because there are people on here that could care less about root. So to them an unlocked bootloader/root means nothing to them. The want a phone that works excellent out of the box. So to them the droid turbo is the better of the two or vice versa.

Any chance for BL unlock for Droid turbo ? Ur thoughts ?

really I'm waiting someone to unlock BL of Droid turbo ..
sill see some one will unlock .. ur thoughts ?? some devs or some Chinese middle man whatever the situation is in ready..
i think it will eventually be unlocked. I say you can , sell your droid turbo and buy a moto maxx. You can unlock bootloader, flash recovery and flash official cm12.1 with it in a second, problem solved.
I don't think the bootloader will ever be unlocked. There seems to be very little interest in development for this phone, relatively speaking. Getting your hands on an XT1250 (electrically identical to the XT1254) would be ideal if that's what you want.
Won't be unlocked, in my opinion. Not worth anyone's time to work on it.
so the owners of Droid turbo really unlucky .. no one can save us
