Well, I'm an x8 user, I'm gonna change the phone in some months and wanna ask if i really should buy this device
I know too much about roms cuz well I'm developing one
I wanna ask you guys, should i use it in stock and then wait for official ics or stock roms suck?
Does this phone really need all the stuff to work smooth? I mean custom kernel, rom etc because well its dualcore phone and looks that in some post i read, my phone works better
Thanks

It's an awesome phone with cm7
well the stock rom it's not the best out there obviously... blatware apps, poor kernel make it a bad choice if you have alternatives.
for me, the best one is CM7, even better with a custom kernel like the Etana one. lots of tweaks and optimizations if you know what i mean

Hi leroy.
I will give you my personal unbiased opinion about it.
I bought the phone and it came with stock froyo (android 2.2). And I thought it was fine. I could play games with no problems at all. Didn't experience any of the problems that lots of people were complaining about (SoD, bad battery life, etc). I "test-drove" it for three weeks more or less, just to make sure everything was working fine, and it was.
And then I flashed temasek's latest kang and vadonka's latest kernel. And I do not regret it one bit. The phone is smoother, more responsive, and battery life is better by at least 25%. Unfortunately I did not do a quadrant benchmark before flashing, so I don't have a before and after comparison, but the phone "feels" much better, no doubts about it.

I tend to believe that what differs from phone to phone is the "bloatware" that carrier dependent phones have installed. I bought an unbranded phone, so I am guessing that is the main reason why I was such a happy customer to begin with, even with stock ROM. A stock unbranded ROM, I might add.

Sorry But i dont know what bloatware mean
sent from my x8 using TecnoBread
My definition of "bloatware" is basically crap software that your carrier (for example vodafone or movistar or whatever) preloads in your branded phone (phone sim locked to your carrier). This software is usually very bad software poorly developed that has memory leakage and drains your battery.
This might be a very biased opinion from me, but usually I like my operating systems to be as clean as possible, only with the software/applications I really need and use. This usually makes for a very fast, responsive and efficient system.

Well, so installing custom rom will replace craping software or just similar unlocking phone?
Also i have hear this is a great phone for developing, but why there's not too much moves as in our threads? Couldn't it be because the phone doesn't need too much developing?
Another question, will official ics fix that or i should upgrade to cm9?

Trust me, the devs for the O2X are awesome. They seriously do great jobs and even create miracles for this device. Just about a month ago, CM9 wasn't available. Many things didn't work, but now thanks to awesome guys like RC and Owain, they made it available to us.
If I were you I wouldn't wait do the official LG release. The GB release was way overdue. LG promised release dates they didn't met and I think this will also happen with ICS. LG said that they would release ICS during the 2nd quarter of this year. I bet that LG won't release it then but probably in 2013 .

I don't know if there is HDMI out or not in CM, because I've never used it while using CM, but it does work fine in MIUI.
And what do you mean by "8 MP is 6 MP"? I thought the resolution just stays the same. Either way, the stock camera app has been ported over to CM7 based roms, and it works just as good as in stock ROM.
Honestly, using MIUI (Wiui to be exact), the experience is alot better, and there is almost no feature sacrificed compared to stock

There are batteries you can buy with more capacity than the stock battery that comes with the phone.
However, I can easily get two day battery life with the stock battery, so personally I don't understand why so many people complain about their battery life. As far as I know it's about the same as other smart phones.
Google is expected by some to announce Android 4.1 Jellybean next week along with their Nexus 7 tablet. Besides chrome integration and a new search widget, what do you guys think will be included with this update?
Since its coded 4.1 and not 5, i expect Android ICS devices will be updated to 4.1 as it is pretty soon to updgrade hardware requirements as 1gb is pretty muh still the standard adn most ICS devices have this amount of RAM. This said, do you guys think any developers will begin porting 4.1 to our devices, even with the hardware codecs and other issues still being prevelant? Would you guys really want it like this, half built?
If this update is good, would this persuade you to upgrade to the droid4, as it will have a higher probability of having a completely working port? since it has ICS now leaked and working, and still a high end phone, when not compared to the SIII atleast.
I think our device runs fine on Gingerbread still...
It would be nice for a port but the little development we have now is already stable with gingerbread.
It was leaked that the GNex will be getting 4.1. As for us running it... I would bet large sums of money against it working right.
From RootzWiki: Galaxy Nexus to get Jellybean 4.1
Screenshot proof:
http://rootzwiki.com/uploads/monthly_06_2012/ccs-808-0-41169000-1340388367_thumb.jpg
Although this is the GSM versions pictured, it won't be tough to build it from source for the CDMA GNex before it's pushed.
4.0.3 to 4.0.4 was pushed to most if not all custom ICS roms. I don't see why 4.1 would not follow, unless there are MAJOR changes which from what I've read there really aren't. I would expect Gummy and AOKP to bring it to their roms in the near future.
However I highly doubt it will change how we stand with our current issues and most likely may cause some new ones.
Ehhh gingerbread runs ok on our phones in my opinion, ics was ALOT faster for me. Im using elcipse right now and its fast but my benchmakrs with ics were much higher, os ran smoother too.
That is a good point by the poster above, so that is high hopes of seeing a port even though I know it wont bring any more features than we already have, except the minor changes to the OS. It will be fun to test though. In around 12 hours we will have better knowledgge of what Jwlly Bean has to offer
I'm sorry but what's the point in upgrading if we won't have a proper ICS on D3 anyway?

Oh really
So if you were able to get custom kernels working does that mean you could use something like a modded Bionic ICS kernel (since its very similar hardware) or would a kernel have to be made from scratch.
The Nexus S is getting an official Jellybean update, and it only has 512MB of memory, just like the Droid3.
I read that memory limitations are what prevented devices like the NexS and the Droid3 from getting properly updated to ICS. I also read that Jellybean probably has looser system requirements than ICS, due to optimizations.
I do hope we can get JellyBean, either officially or otherwise. I'd love to have Google Now and I'm only halfway through my two-year contract.

Correct. Also he has said that we will be able to get Jellybean. I would imagine with all he has learned this year, he can probably get it fully running now. Hwcodecs may be the showstopper though...again. In theory a workaround may be available since we have a custom kernel.

512 is enough but I think the issue has something to do with RAM being shared with the GPU so there is less avaliable, I get something around 330MB as total RAM when adding the 2 numbers under running services. My Droid 3 running stock 2.3.4 with bloat frozen is using around 250 MB. My Touchpad with CM9 and a full 1GB of RAM idles at around 300MB of RAM used, and its going to be less conservative on RAM usage since its got a GB.
The point is I don't think a CM9/10 ROM will be much worse than a bloated GB ROM as far as RAM usage goes. I really wish we had some more RAM, but I could see CM9/10 being a daily driver sometime in the future. The rest of the hardware in this phone is still pretty decent and CM should be no problem for it as long as the team can get some drivers working.
More like a rage, than a question, but... why is there no one trying to port 4.2.2 for ours x8?
Many lower spec phones have a port, wich to be fair, do have bugs, but at least have it. What happened to the x8 dev scene? Many thanks to nAa for keeping x8 alive, but is there no one else that can scratch the surface of 4.2.2? Plus with the .32 kernel aren't things supposed to be fair easily in porting?
I see nAa wrote 4.1.0 is coming, but... i sure would want 4.2.2 for my baby

I must admit that I am working on that but I'd prefer you to be patient in this area
For experience of 4.2.2 we need many requirements, ex:
unlocked BL
A new kernel (for bugless roms)
Enough knowledge for cooking kernel(we need to partition internal memory{for heavy 4.2.2} which was not necessary on gb)
Jtag tools (cooking kernel is a sensitive progress & hard bricks is so regular)
& just some developers have the knowledge & tools for cooking
#& I'm pretty sure if a recognized developer cook that kernel there will be a lot of roms for working on it

Judging from changelog, development seems a tad easier over the fence. Kernel version is up to 2.6.35.
Hello, I'm waiting for my phone to be delivered again (as it had a hardware malfunction, but the warranty covered it) and i'm planning to stick with GB... i'm tired of fighting with kernels, scripts and everything to make the phone work like it should. I want something that just works (sounding like an iOS fan, I know lol)
That's why i'm on a quest to bring some of the improvements of JB to GB. One of those improvements which i really liked was the camera. In JB you can zoom digitally, and also, very important to me, you can pause a video recording and then resume it. These features don't exist in GB Camera app.
Is there any way to make the JB camera work in GB????
Thank you very much in advance

Since Lg updated the o4x to 4.1.2, wouldn't it be great to have this modded Into cm and make a final release with everything working, I've been trying so many roms but non exceed stock reliability, I think that a port from stock to cm based with everything working would be great for all users, truth I don't care about android version, but cm experience is great. Maybe instead of working on forever bugged ROMs with no official android release, try using the base of what lg has released and make a rock solid ROM featuring cm experience.

In My opinion roms are not "forever bugged"; what one dev, or a team of devs do with a custom rom is... customising.
What you are asking for is steadyness, immobility, what devs do is pushing the limit of knowledge a step further and develop something new that did not exist before under the form in which it is now.
In addition, custom roms are made also to compensate the lacking of development from the original manufacturer. LG supoorted the development of their firmware up to ver 1.2, custom roms are 4.2.2, o 4.3 already and take advantage of many powerful feature in our device that could be better used if the device would not be abandoned by the manufacturer.
Mind that i am not against the fact that phones are forgotten by their manufacturer one o two years after they have been presented, it is a market law... still, with custom roms we can enjoy our highly priced toys for many, many years and, yes, have a lot of fun with them. Sometimes roms are buggy, it is true, but i believe that if one is here, in this forum, it should be to contribute to make things better, and not for complaining about (free) buggy roms.
In addition, CM needs very few contribution from LG base, as it is AOSP based, that is, pure Android, with no fancy UI and bloatware, and current official stable version 10.1.3 (corresponding to Android 4.2.2) is rock solid, or at least, not more buggy than LG 4.1.2.
I dont question development, im a cm and custom kernels fan myself, but what I mean is that there are no significant differences between the jellybean versions, 4.1.2 is quite good in my opinion, and I'm not complaining either, but I have not seen a cm implementation based on 4.1.2. Thing is that for this phone there is a critical bug that many people can't stand independent from performance or how beautiful, etc. Which is present in both 4.2.2 and 4.3 And that is baseband being very unstable. I keep rebooting my phone 2-3 times a day to get back signal and data.Tested with all kernels. Which I believe this is not a kernel related problem. So I think that if we use cm 4.1.2 this issue could be solved.
By no means I discard the efforts that Devs. Have put into this phone, I'm just giving an idea that could be worth taking in consideration.

You are right, if we built CM9 (ICS) or CM10 (JB4.1.2) these would probably be better on the battery, and with official drivers etc, it would be stable. (in theory)

Try SlimBean latest demetris build.Or zaiben rom.I get great battery life with both of them and almoust none baseband wakelock.Even if it is there it doesnt reflect on battery life that much anymore.

He is asking about CM10, in all honesty, CM10.1 is just an improved CM10, there are not many differences in all honesty.. It is obsolete now anyways, so 4.4 is going to be prioritized, CM10.1 and above have more to offer, i don't think CM10 will ever be developed for our device, it is too old now.

Well, CM10.1 is rock stable. Never had a random reboot, and trust me, I was tetsing my kernel on it pretty heavily

You can't just take official drivers on CM. You might be able to do so on AOSP, but I'm pretty sure it won't have an effect. Actually I think it would make it even unstable

Well, If i happen to have some spare time (pretty unlikely though ATM), I might try to compile CM10, but you better do not expect it TBH
Not sure what TBH means but It would be great to give it a shot, hoping it will work better than the newer versions.

I had all those signal bugs, but in the latest nightly of 4.3.1 that bug is near to be solved, it still happens but less often than before, in the past since CM10 RC5 I suffered that annoying bug, and i stoped using CM based ROMS, the problem is not the kernel, the problem is the RIL programmed by CM developer team, and for lucky for us they have been worked on our problem, I passed of reboot my phone every 20 or 30 min to reboot once or none per day when the phone can't get signal again
