[Q] Microphone not usable - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm unable to use my microphone on my Phone. When I call someone they can't hear my voice. When I launch the Google Search Mic, it doesn't detect any sound unless I scream or hit the phone, but the gray circle isn't big (meaning its not picking up too much sound). However, when I run the diagnostics tool within settings, I can hear even whispering.
This issue started since a few days ago. I was at a pool party and had the phone in my pocket. All ports were sealed, phone ON. I was recording audio at the time. I went in through the shallow end and I realized I had my phone in my pocket, 5 mins later. My phone was OFF when I pulled it out. When I powered it back ON after getting a towel to dry it, it did some weird sequence ( SONY logo, then picture of a triangle with a wrench and screwdriver inside). I had to hold the Power + Volume up to get out of it. I powered it back on and it booted into the OS, surprisingly. I found there were no problems...except for the mic. I dried my phone and all, no water internally.
Just yesterday I restarted my phone to clear out some RAM. I notice it was doing this weird sequence again, except that time instead of the triangle with a wrench it was a picture of android, progress bar on the bottom. It rebooted again to the OS, nothing's different.
Here's my configuration:
-STOCK 14.1.G.0.534
-C6903
-No Warranty
-Locked bootloader
-No Root, recoveries, and busybox
I flashed everything to defaults using SUS to see if it's a software problem, but that didn't fix it. I factory reset and it didn't work. What can I do to fix this? Is there an app I can download to amplify the mic (or file)?
Using Earbuds fixes the issue. But I don't prefer it attached to my phone all the time.

Flash and Update to the latest Firmware and check is the problem persist, wipe everything. If you do not want the latest FW then Update to JB 4.3 FW .136. It doing crazy so I will recommend to upgrade and wipe all. if then the problem still there and it still go out of software then I will start think about something worse than just a Software problem.

I forgot to mention on my post: When I use Speaker phone the mic works. I turned off the Mic suppression and tried with speaker phone off, but nothing.
I'm upgrading the phone to latest atm, will report back.

Upgrade did not help me.
Isn't there 2 mics on this phone? Maybe 1 of them broke...not sure.
Is this a hardware issue?

I looked at the service manual and saw there are two mics: one on the top at the back of the phone, and one on the bottom inside the speaker. I used Audacity to generate a mid-high range frequency of sound. I connected earbuds to my laptop and put the ends to the mics. The mic on the top back of the phone picks up sound. The mic inside of the speaker doesn't.
EDIT: Started the service menu. Secondary mic is ok, primary mic broken.
I'm convinced this is a Hardware issue. If I send my phone to Sony to service the primary microphone, how much will it cost, minus the inspection fee? Estimates are ok.

No sound in earpiece, sensors not working

Today my phone randomly stopped sending sound through the normal speaker on the front, and the sensors there dont work either anymore. Everything was jolly around 3, when i made a call. Then later at 8 pm i got in the car and turned on pandora plugged into the audio jack.
When i got home, no sound in the earpiece when i made or recieved calls, I also noticed that the screen wasn't turning off when it was up against my ear like it normally did.
I noticed it was being very laggy with response to the sensor last week some time.
I've pulled the battery, did a clean install of my ROM again, (firefly) flicked the back of it, rebooted many times, charge it up, shook it violently, nothing seems to work.
Sound comes out of everywhere else on the phone with no troubles. The sensor no longer works at all, it's set to auto bright and now it will never change.
I've also tried doing a factory data wipe, and a data wipe in CWM recovery.
Craptivate is fail again.
Anyone have any experience with both the speaker AND the sensor being out at the same time
Sounds like faulty hardware...flash to stock. If it's still broke get a replacement...
Man, if motoblur wasn't such garbage i'd get an atrix. Maybe i'll switch to tmobile and get the G2x
What's best way to flash back to stock, odin?
Yup. thor's father.

won't change the terrible way it stores contact information or all the junk in it.
Are there any ROMs for it yet? It's still pretty new but I thought I heard something about one
Had this same problem. I was about to reflash but stumbled on the solution. For some reason the phone got stuck in headphone mode. Anyway, when in call simply mute then un-mute. Hope this works for you.

Microphone problems

Hi there.
I have the s5mini now three days.
The problem is that my friends understand me very very quietly. In the German thread are many Users who have the same problem.
How is that with you?
Is it not possible to adjust something in the service menu ??
Sorry for my bad English...

Hi,
also from Germany, I have the SM-G800F. I can't confirm your problems, no one complains about quiet voice problems.
Cheers!

you need to clean mic hole by needle or toothpick and problem will be solved
I also had the same problem as in the original post so I came here for complaining.
But after trying the needle suggestion above (cheers to the usasha!!) the problem got fixed!!!!
I was about to return it to be serviced, but now I'm so happy with my S5 mini
I used a thin needle and inserted it carefully for 3-4 millimeters, some lint came out.
We have exactly the same problem!
Bought phone and it went to service 3 times in a row. They've replaced everything from microphone to motherboard, even "cleared the mic hole". So, as you can see, we've replaced everything and it didn't get better.
Service even replied that the phone is working as it should. We bought it at the end of august, used it 4 days,.. other days, it was on service.
@greglord: is your last post some kind of a game with finding differences?
Usually this is with two pictures, so I find it very unique using posts instead.
Back to thread topic - I also used needle and now people hear me more clearly than before so thank you @usasha !!
I've installed sound meter from PLAY on 2 android phones my old Desire S and my new g800f. ive noticed that there is a 30dB difference the old one receiving better sound then the 1 day old g800f. sad!

Those who took this advice can say good bye to the water resistant certificate.
All water resistant phones have bad microphone performance!
That's not entirely true, my friends immediately reported that I sounded loud and clear without asking, when I switched back from my G800F to my Xperia ZR, even without them knowing I switched phones. Maybe the sound isn't as good as a non-water resistant phone but it sure can be a lot better than my G800F.
I just got my phone back from the Samsung repair shop, after almost 2 weeks (!). But I doubt they have done anything to fix it because the screen was as smudged as when I brought it there. IIRC well the screen has to be taken out to replace anything inside the phone, or am I wrong?
How to solve this problem without loosing warranty?
I have SM-G800F with stock Android 4.4.2 updated from Samsung to the latest update I can get. Not rooted.
I have mic problem since I've bought this phone two weeks ago. People talking to me say that my voice is muffled as if I hold the phone too far from my mouth. This happens only using phone mic - if I switch to speakerphone or earphone during the call, everyone can hear me great. So, the problem is with the phone mic as if the mic level is too low .
I've searched all over the web and have realized that this is very common problem with S5 or S5 mini. As a solution, people suggest "cleaning" the mic hole which puncture the waterproof membrane of the phone and you loose warranty.
Another approach that could make progress is by editing default_gain.conf file at root /system/etc/ (more at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2777535) but for that to work you need to have root which also void warranty - correct?
Suggestions like taking out the battery or wiping the cache partition didn't make any improvement for me.
The only hope for me is hint the I've found the post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55192014&postcount=2) on this forums suggesting raising mic level gain setting in phone service menu could solve the problem but there is no explanation how to do it. I've tried to enter the service menu using *#*#0011#*#* and then Menu -> Back -> Menu -> Input Key -> Q -> Menu -> Input Key -> 0000 but service menu doesn't appear like it should.
Any suggestions either on how to enter the service menu or some other way of solving the issue?
I had this phone like 2 days. I unsealed it. It's a nice phone but I recommend don't waste your time with it. Get rid of it you still can
Samsung S5 mini G800 microphone problem solved
Today I had a problem with the G800, the microphone doesn't work when talking about a call, but it works when recording a dictaphone.
I replaced the charging flex, but I didn't solve the problem, the microphone in the call didn't work.
Then I replaced the top microphone on the motherboard, which is used for speakerphone conversations,
and I heated audio IC WM1811GE it with hot air at 320 degrees Celsius for 20 seconds and that's it. Problem solved.
Now my S mini works perfectly, now the microphone works in a call or conversation. :good::good:

[Q] T-Mobile D9592 No sound or mic.

So, fist time post.
Anyway, a friend of mine gave me his Flex the other day. He was upset because he couldn't get the sound/audio to work and no one could hear him on his end, showing his mic wasn't working (first time this has happened). After tinkering around for a bit (cleaning over and over), trying everything I could, even downgrading it from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 to see if it was a software problem. Still nothing. Yet, when a headset or just normal headphones are plugged in everything works fine.
So, after all of that we took it in and they said it wasn't a hardware problem, but they couldn't find a solution and they couldn't replace the handset with his warranty already expired. So, I was hoping there was someone here who could help me. I was thinking maybe if there was a software problem I didn't catch if installing a custom rom on it would help. I was hoping to hopefully get some insight before going to that.
Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section, still new here.
There are no "custom" per say ROMs besides the cm11 one Playfulgod and I have posted in the dev section. If you're on 4.2.2 download Playfulgod's cm11. But it doesn't stay booted and there is no data. Download mine ,which is only Playfulgod's cm that I've modified to boot with 4.4, and the is no sound but it has data and stable boot. I don't suggest either one as your fix though. If you flash the stock 4.2.2 or the stock 4.4.2 software to it and there still is no sound except through the headphone jack then I can't imagine it not being a hardware issue. I mean it pretty much has to be a hardware issue.
And besides the kats at these stores selling you the phones or answering your questions, stereotypically no smarter about the devices than any other 20 year old that has googled and memorized the specs of the phones. They know specs and sales pitches. Other wise they have to revert to the computer and go through a series of elimination questions to diagnose your issue. Ive even had to show one rep how to use lg PC suite to flash his g2 back to stock. And that's the standard issue software that we all have.
My best guess on your issue is the device could have been dropped or damaged in some way that has loosened or broken a connection or part inside rendering the speaker useless. But that's my opinion.
Well I don't think it's been dropped. At least he said he didn't drop it. After pulling it apart I made sure everything was in the right place and nothing was shorted out or disconnected. So I'll probably send it into a repair shop to see if they can do anything with it. Though a headset would probably just be the better way to go, it's just an inconvenience.

Absolutely. I would hate to have to through in my ear buds every time I had to answer a call
Well after installing Master Volume Control, I have been able to test that the speaker does in fact work. But no sounds of any kind aside from voice call, work, the normal beep you get when using the volume rockers. This is starting to drive me crazy.
might have solution
Just received my refurbished flex phone, realized no sound from speaker. Popped the back off a couple times, suddenly I hear sound! The cable over the battery when lifted and remove the crease caused by shape of battery removed, speaker now works! I hope this helps you. Best of luck.

[SOLVED] Speakers suddenly dead!

Hello,
Both the earpiece and the other speaker suddenly stopped working on my nexus 6. I am suspecting it is a hardware issue since I performed a hard reset but the issue still persists. The odd thing is that both the earpiece and the speaker are affected at the same time. Are they connected to each other?
Is there any way I can make sure that this is indeed a hardware issue before cracking open the phone?
Thanks

Hello had the same bug super user app libs was away no root from here to now did nothing.reflashed super su, without super user app like supersu or magisk it dont work for me. hope i can help.
Another question, some times i turn on my display an for 3 sec i had more than max brightness, like a sun, no auto adjust always 20%, may the old nexus now die hard, hope not
Before I opened the phone, I'd boot to safe mode and see if things work. If they do, reboot and see if the problem comes back. Booting into safe mode disables all unnecessary apps, clears caches and resets settings to default. Sometimes that resolves your problem and on reboot things are working again.

So I guess it sounds like hardware. You might take s close look and see if there is damage/dirt in the jack making the device think the headphones are connected. The pin is easily bent and wears so it's probably just that. ifixit has a repair guide.
Alternatively, you might consider Bluetooth headphones [emoji4]

Thanks. I don't think it's the jack issue because I installed an app that shows a headphone icon in the status bar when a headphone is plugged in and it doesn't show it when nothing is connected.
Do you know why both speakers ceased functioning at the same time AND if there is a way for me to direct audio to only one of them, either the earpiece or the speaker, to see if one or both
are dead?
wow. I reverted back to an earlier build from Feb and now it's working. Very interesting.

First, sorry to hear about your problem. But, I am actually happy to see this up at xda. Tell you why. I purchased a uesd nexus 6 from a seller on ebay. Description was everythings works. Pics showed it was in excellent condition.
Problem was when it arrived. I discovered the top speaker was trash. Total robot like voice. Of course seller denied any knowledge of it. My option was to return it to him. But judging from the way he spoke to me. I could tell it was going to be a fight. There is no way he did not know about this. I wound up eating the phone and am currently awaiting a new top speaker. So, please dont forget to ask about speakers if buying used. My concern was body and screen. I never thought to ask about speakers and I never thought there would be crooks like him. Wrong...

It is interesting. Is it possible you had a mismatch between kernel and security updates? "Newer" kernel on "older" ROM? Or vice versa. The difference doesn't have to be more than one has a security update that the other didn't.

More like mismatched or corrupted libs or drivers
Know this is an older thread, but just figured I'd post what I found regarding a similar issue I had. My phone basically took a 3 second dunk in the sink. Everything seemed fine the first hour or two, then the speakers stopped working. However, it seems like the speakers failing is some kind of water damage failsafe or something. The solution is just to turn your phone off and on around 5 times (I can't remember the exact number, but once or twice won't cut it), and you will have the speakers return to normal. Not sure if the OP had the same issue, but just an idea in case something similar happens to others.
Bumping an old thread but I had this same issue and had to flash back to previous builds. I stopped updating my phone around Jan/Feb. Tried to update to the Aug 7.1.1 build and the same thing happened again. I didn't try the turn on and off 5+ times, I'm just once again restoring my Jan/Feb build.
Can anyone else confirm this "fix" or has this same problem?
I'd boot to safe mode first. If it works then, it has something to do with an app, your app restore process or something like that.

Moto service center f-kd up my phone? What happened here?

Bought my phone in November and until May it was working perfectly, I thoroughly enjoyed the phone.
During the installation of the April security patch my phone got stuck and I had to reboot it.
As a result, Android didnt work anymore. Even after hard resetting the phone was super slow and full of errors.
I sent it back to an official Moto service center; so they could reset the firmware.
When I finally received my phone back, I notice there were marks on the back-glass that werent there before.
the "repair paper" said that "broken parts have been replaced".
The phone works quick again, except that the loudspeaker cracks really bad on 80% volume... and when calling I can hear a very soft but subtle abnormality in the speaker as well.
I also notice a small delay with the fingerprint scanner, which wasn't there before.
When I look into the android recovery menu I can see that this phone has a different serial number than the one I sent to them.
- Do you also think they gave me someone elses phone? Because my loudspeaker didnt crack at all at high volume.
- Is this legal ?
Simply repairing android doesn't require opening up the phone to "replace the motherboard", right?
Seems like they had to replace mainboard. Which is logical, because Android errors might have been a result of damaged memory.
At least this would explain serial number change.
And the speaker problem might be a result of incorrect assembly after the repair. (this happened once to me, when I received my Lumia 930 after the repair, headphones jack was not working correctly. It did not react when headphones were connected - fortunately, when I started to move the plug in the socket, the socket "jumped in" into its place and it started to work again)
I'd return the phone and request them to fix the problems you described. I don't think much more can be done on the discussion forum
